Higurashi When They Cry Hou for PS4, Switch – DLC ‘Higurashi When They Cry Origin’ announced

Entergram has announced “Higurashi When They Cry Origin“—new downloadable content for the PlayStation 4 and Switch versions of Higurashi When They Cry Hou. It will launch on June 22 in Japan for 3,410 yen.

Here is an overview of the content, via the official website:

Origin Mode – A new mode that changes the the scenario to the same single-episode structure as the original games, with re-recorded dialogue to bring the presentation closer to the original games.

Implemented a Feature to Switch Between Character Portrait Artwork – Switch beween character portrait artwork in Origin Mode. You can switch between PC Mode (featuring character portraits illustrated by Ryukishi07) and CS Mode (featuring character portraits from the console release) in the game’s settings.

New Opening Movie for Higurashi When They Cry Origin – Includes a new opening movie for Higurashi When They Cry Origin. The movie will also use either the PC Mode or CS Mode character portraits according to your settings.

Bonus Scenario “Mehagashi” Included with Full Voice-Overs – The bonus scenario “Mehagashi,” which was included with Higurashi When They Cry Hou+ for PC, appears on consoles for the first time with full voice-overs. (Only CS Mode can be used for this scenario.)

Entergram also announced that Higurashi When They Cry Hou for PlayStation 4 and Switch have shipped over 300,000 units.

Hello everyone! \o/ Since it's April 1st in most parts of the world, I thought I'd share these cute fake screenshots of my yandere yuri VN, It gets so lonely here, which were created to mimic the art/presentation style of Umineko by Gud91_ on Twitter! Umineko was the first VN I ever read, and it's still my favourite. It has a very special place in my heart, and it's the reason why I became a VN dev myself. I never would've heard about VNs at all if it wasn't for Umineko, and I owe it a lot! As such, I thought it'd be fun to see two of the characters from one of my own VNs drawn in Ryukishi07's iconic style, so I can share them with people! I think the princess and the gravedigger look very cute! Aren't they adorable? ❤️

While I won't be making an official update to Lonely to add these Ryu07-core sprites, I hope you enjoy looking at these secreenshots! And if you're interested in where these characters are from, they come from my free(!!!) yandere yuri horror VN, It gets so lonely here, which takes a little inspiration from Umineko in places. I had to succumb to the peer pressure and make an umineko oc!

Their name is Panacea. She is one of the 72 Great Demons. As furniture, she is contracted by different masters and specializes in getting vengeance. She can cause illnesses and can only heal ailments she herself has caused. Their favorite clients to help are murderous housewives <3

They are greatly inspired by Vephar from the Lesser Key Solomon, hence the mermaid and illness design influences. Below is the stuffed animal she was inspired by and some alt versions.

I definitely want to draw them more and draw them in my own style. I forgot how difficult style matching was 😅 starting off with a sprite in Ryukishi07's style definitely humbled me and drained all my energy.

Idk dude I’m too tired and not smart enough to articulate everything I like about this scene. But it feels like every other romance ever either treats sex as completely off the table/last resort, or uses it as a complete punch line. Nothing ever seems to speak so frankly about it, or treat it in such a real way.

Like in other rom com manga this same scenario would happen, except she’d be upset bc she found out he had a crush on someone else, not because she thought they had sex

That’s not to mention all the miko-specific reasons I like this scene. As the goody-two-shoes character, she’s the one you LEAST expect to say the word sex, so that already kind of throws you off balance. And instead of the tear filled emotional thing you might get elsewhere, her discontent is. Cold, matter of fact. There’s a distance between them in the framing of this panel, they face opposite ways. Iino looks down, so you can tell she’s disappointed, but her comment is pointed. There’s a real tension here, something that feels more lifelike than the melodrama of other romcoms, even other really good romcoms

And something about just. The cleanliness of akasaka’s art. This goes for just about the whole back 2/3rds of kaguya, once he figures out the style he sticks with. There’s a huge ryukishi07 original sprites charm to the early chapters, but I think this really distinct, uncluttered style without a fraction of a line out of place serves all of his intentions well. If I wasn’t a dummy idiot I could probably parse exactly why this works, but oh well

Sitting back from the enjoyment of reading more Higurashi again in Higurashi Hou+, it is really tiring that Ryukishi07 and 07thExpansion keep pandering to pedophiles nowadays and keep sexualizing the characters including one of them who was literally sexually abused and had csa statistics plastered on the screen at one point with her sprite behind them in one of the tips in Ep 3. Like, you read interviews and read his works that handle the subject so well and him having so much more sense than his horny dumb otaku fans who were reading and complaining about Higurashi and how it wasn't horny enough as it was coming out at the time. Now 20 years later you have those same characters he refused to sexualized being put in "sexy" swimsuits and new characters that look the same age as them if not younger in lingerie and shit. What's really notable is that in the earlier versions of Higurashi, Satoko didn't have a blue blanket to cover her when she was rescued out of a deadly hot bath and while it wasn't sexual or anything, Ryukishi07 himself decided that it was tasteless or disrespetful the character or what they would want and chose to add a blue towel that's been present in every version since. Now, 20 years later, that same blue towel sprite to make her more covered is used as an excuse to make the sexually abused character look sexy in some goofy, horny side story. It's disappointing because you fucking know they can do better and did better roughly 20 years prior but are actively choosing not to to make funny haha moments that pander to the pedo part of the higurashi fanbase. It sucks. It fucking sucks.

UMINEKO EXTRA MATERIALS CHRONOLOGICAL READING ORDER

this is a repost from jenn's old blog, which got nuked for reasons that are too stupid to get into. it has been re-patched with new info regarding symphony. please enjoy!

ok hi again. along with the eight main arcs of umineko, theres been a bunch of side content released in the form of booklets and short stories. though (most) of these extant materials have been rounded up in the form of the compilation discs umineko tsubaba, hane, and saku, almost all of them were released during the ongoing release of the main series! this is a list of all known, translated extra materials, in as chronological a release order as i could put together. know that none of this is required reading. you can just read straight through the main arcs and get everything you need to enjoy the story. but if you’re a nitpicky completionist, like me, this stuff can enhance your enjoyment of the series, and maybe give a few extra hints to those that might want them.

a few notes up front: 1) as much as umineko is for a niche otaku audience, this extra stuff is even more so. stories marked with a * have a cw for jokes (big or small) about incest and/or pedophilia. i was pretty liberal with what i thought counts, but better safe than sorry imo. 2) i recommend the vn adaptations of the short stories, when available. those found in tsubasa will be blue, those in hane will be yellow, those in saku will be red, those in symphony will be purple. those without vn adaptations will be uncolored.

*PATCH NOTE: since the original publication of this list, the final console adaptation of umineko, symphony of catbox and dreams, has been released. this new release includes vn version of four previously non-vn stories, as well as including ALL STORIES WITH VN VERSIONS EVER. this comes at the cost of only using the ps3 sprites. maybe this is better for you, maybe its worse. the choice is yours, reader, and yours alone.

ok i said i'd make this post. so here's my comparison of ryukishi07's art with the newer art found in the visual novels. i dont want this post to be super long so i'll just focus on the biggest offenders imo. (this post is spoiler free btw!!)

rena's sprite has such a good energy to it, yknow?

her cute pose here is integral to her design, imo. she's silly!!!

but the other sprites really take that away...

her hair isnt as poofy, she looks kind of generic here. and she doesnt even do the fun raptor arms!!! :{

and then satoko...

here's her expression when having a breakdown due to trauma.

honestly, i think the lack of her normal shine in her eyes as well as the intense expression in ryukishi's style just really delivers it much better. the other 2 like, yeah, she's crying and upset but her normal crying sprite is distinct from the breakdown one imo

she's getting picked on by her friends and throwing a fit, and is whining about it. but in the one above, there's a clear difference that shows something is genuinely wrong. also, here's her crying sprites for the others

the one to the left just looks like a yawn. the right is... better, but without the tears the expression still isnt all that... expressive, you know?

in general, i just think that ryukishi's sprites have so much more energy and emotion to them.

my final complaint:

takano. we know her and she's normal :} she's very pretty.

the matsuri sprite just sucks. she lacks any whimsy. she looks like a normal woman at a pta meeting. they took everything from her and i'll never forgive them

After much badgering from my friend and now ask-screener @nauseating-nostalgia, who lately has been obsessed with @pochapal's comprehensive liveblog of Umineko (still at chapter 1), I've decided to read this work myself and then maybe branch off to other visual novels afterwards.

First off, I am not an expert in the mystery genre. I've read my fair bit of Sherlock Holmes and even a few Poirot novels when I was a child, but it was never my instinct to solve the cases myself - which I am told is the entire point of said novels. This read through will be a personal challenge to not simply consume this work as entertainment but also to figure out the who-dunnit before the final reveal. Since there are 8 Episodes and just the first 4 are over 600k words long, I'm quite curious how the murder mystery aspect will handle itself.

What I do consider my area of expertise though, is witches. Or at least the anime kind. I've poured over a decade of my life to Revolutionary Girl Utena, and dipped my feet into the stormy waters of Madoka and soaked myself in the lake of Princess Tutu. Witches belong in fairytales, and little girls live there in their dreams until they're forced to wake up. I wonder where exactly the Golden Witch will take me.

DISCLAIMERS

These are the things I've absorbed about Umineko after making the mistake of befriending a fan:

+ Battler (the MC) is actually a trans girl if you think about it really hard

+ Battler is incompetent

+ There is an old man sorcerer in this story which I consider to be absurd in the magical girl/witch genre. What the hell is he doing here? Get out old man, no one likes you.

+ Magic may or may not be real. Who knows? Maybe the Golden Witch is simply special effects produced by a state of the art planetarium in order to fool people into killing each other. We'll see

I'll start the liveblog soon. I'm using the ryukishi07 sprites and no voice acting because I want an experience as close to the original as possible
