Sitting back from the enjoyment of reading more Higurashi again in Higurashi Hou+, it is really tiring that Ryukishi07 and 07thExpansion keep pandering to pedophiles nowadays and keep sexualizing the characters including one of them who was literally sexually abused and had csa statistics plastered on the screen at one point with her sprite behind them in one of the tips in Ep 3. Like, you read interviews and read his works that handle the subject so well and him having so much more sense than his horny dumb otaku fans who were reading and complaining about Higurashi and how it wasn't horny enough as it was coming out at the time. Now 20 years later you have those same characters he refused to sexualized being put in "sexy" swimsuits and new characters that look the same age as them if not younger in lingerie and shit. What's really notable is that in the earlier versions of Higurashi, Satoko didn't have a blue blanket to cover her when she was rescued out of a deadly hot bath and while it wasn't sexual or anything, Ryukishi07 himself decided that it was tasteless or disrespetful the character or what they would want and chose to add a blue towel that's been present in every version since. Now, 20 years later, that same blue towel sprite to make her more covered is used as an excuse to make the sexually abused character look sexy in some goofy, horny side story. It's disappointing because you fucking know they can do better and did better roughly 20 years prior but are actively choosing not to to make funny haha moments that pander to the pedo part of the higurashi fanbase. It sucks. It fucking sucks.

i do not subscribe to the notion that because when they cry exists in some shared multiverse that means higurashi has umineko's meta narrative. it exists as it does. there are reasons to be skeptical of how POV characters engage with the world around, (odds are if someone is a first person narrator, they are unreliable during that whole stint), but i don't think this extends as far as 'nothing is at face value x y and z are lies.'

i think the way higurashi is constructed should be the clearest indicator of how it's to be engaged with. it works is by setting up everything as suspiciously as possible for like 5 arcs (although its breaking down by meakashi which is something ryukishi07 does on purpose), and then in tsumihoroboshi they break the doors down to reveal that all this suspicion of of people you love is at the heart of the problem. the last four arcs are called 'answer arcs', a response to the aptly named question arcs. here is a series of mysteries (the questions at hand); here are the answers. It is a story about faith, of all kinds. you have to believe that 07thexpansion is not lying to you when they flip the script on its head, because if you don't, if you can't, the moral about believing in others, trusting that the people around you and by extension the world are good and worthwhile, isn't going to stick, is it? Especially not with the target audience.

i feel like its important to remember that the target audience of higurashi is like....tweens and early teens? like. the ages the main cast are is the target demo, and umineko's target demo is decidedly older. 11-15 year olds aren't idiotic, but they're not exactly at a 'question everything to divine true meaning' stage of life. The world needs to make sense with clearcut answers. those are the reasons to believe.

I don't think taking the outrageous or fantastical explanations as legitimate answers devalues the meaning at all. I don't think it makes it less deep or compelling. In higurashi, like in many works of fiction, the literal is the metaphorical. The answers are true, the construction of leaping through worlds is true, the whole is true, but they get at larger ideas. Higurashi's meaning, it's message, is one divined through faith, through trust. Are you not just spitting in its face by questioning everything again?

for context-

faust: 07thexpansion's works. i've been listening to a lot of the soundtrack from both the vns and anime (well, the DEEN higurashi anime) as i write it. does not help that one of my friends told me that the faust-gretchen-mephistopheles interactions remind her very much of the kinzo-(SPOILER CHARACTER)-genji interactions. mephistopheles honestly feels like a more menacing hanyuu, or perhaps even eua/featherine.

dr. jekyll & mr. hyde: the shining. not the book or miniseries, but the 1980 film adaptation. i've realized that i'm modeling a lot my hyde's character off of that movie's jack torrance, whereas i guess jekyll would be sort of like wendy? also i have been listening to the music/sound design from the shining as i work on it and it makes me want to crawl under the bed and hide forever.

so are these reinterpretations of classic lit that i'm working on writing just gonna be blatant aesthetic and thematic nods to newer, more contemporary art in the horror genre or

It's pretty unfortunate that Ciconia no naku koro ni isn't going to be finished for the forseeable future due to several very understandable reasons because it had what was pretty much at the time that it came out to when people were still expecting episodes soon after, the only visual novel where people could sort of speculate live what might come next as it was happening as a mystery visual novel.

Like, most mystery visual novels are one offs from what I'm aware, with maybe a sequel like Kara no Shoujo, and they've also mostly been around for years if not a decade or two or more even. Ciconia was a mystery visual novel that came out more recently with the first episode in 2019 and was expected by many to be 8 or 4 episodes, so you could in a sense live speculate with others without needing to avoid spoilers and the community for the entire thing until you were done just to be safe. Ciconia has some of the coolest and most interesting theories out there and a cool community too as does When They Cry in general, and it's pretty unfortunate that it had to be put on indefinite hiatus. A lot of people felt burned I think due to that investment and it's not even the creator's fault really cause they needed to make money in order to make more cause the first episode didn't make enough money, and then covid hit, and then it had an israeli character and you know what's been happening recently. I really can't blame Ryukishi07 and 07thExpansion for holding off on the whole thing for who knows how long.
