𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥

A/N: For @hp-12monthsofmagic’s August prompt (“School’s out for the summer”). Set in June 1991.

The setting sun painted the sky with reds, purples, oranges, and yellows as it sank beneath the horizon and the edge of the Black Lake, marking the close of yet another year at Hogwarts. And for the cast of seventh years, it marked the final sunset that they would enjoy while students. Sara O’Donnell had never quite believed that she and her siblings would make it to that day. Their older brother hadn’t and the quadruplets had been sucked into the same mystery that their older brother had been. 

“We made it,” her brother, Ryan, announced.

“I wasn’t sure that we would m-make it,” her other brother, Conor, mused.

Ryan let out a snort of laughter, throwing one arm around Conor’s shoulders and the other around their sister, Cara’s shoulders.

“But we made it, and all in one piece,” Cara responded.

“Not all of our friends made it, though,” Sara muttered, not trying to bring the mood down but it was in moments like this that Ash Khanna’s absence could be felt so acutely. It was obvious with the way that all of their friends were gathered around the bonfire at the opposite end of the lakeshore. 

“Yeah,” Ryan echoed. “But, we can’t change the past.”

“No, we can’t.”

“We’re getting melancholy here, guys. For as much sadness as there was, there were some great times. I mean, at least one of us found a spouse,” Cara responded, elbowing Sara in the stomach. In turn, Sara’s face turned bright red as she found the shadowy form of Barnaby Lee. They’d been together for two years now, since the end of OWLs.

“Maybe so, but I’m not ready to think about marriage yet.”

“God, we’re n-n-not even eighteen y-y-yet,” Conor responded. 

“Yeah. I don’t want to get engaged until I’m at least 21. And anyways, I’m not the one off to university in the fall,” Sara said, turning to face her younger brother.

Conor grinned sheepishly, but didn’t say anything as he ducked his head bashfully. It had taken a lot of convincing to get Conor to even consider applying for university to study architecture. He had taken multiple correspondence courses over the summers, in math and physics and whatever else was needed to even be eligible for an architecture university program. But, the O’Donnells supported one another. It was what they did. It was how they convinced Conor to follow his dream and how they convinced Cara to pursue her interests in art. 

“Hey! O’Donnells! Are you going to join us or just be sadly sentimental over there?” Charlie Weasley called, as he jogged down from the beach.

“Like you wouldn’t be the exact same way,” Ryan retorted.

“Yeah, yeah. Come join us anyways.”

“We’re coming.”

Sara shook her head, but followed Charlie and her siblings to join the rest of their friends. She dropped down onto one of the logs next to Barnaby, who draped an arm across her shoulders. The yellows and reds of the fire flickered across everyone’s faces.

“We’ll stay in touch, right?” Penny Haywood asked, looking across at everyone.

“Yeah. We’ll try,” Sara responded.

“Well, Winger and I will both be entering auror training and I expect to see Sara at the hospital,” Nymphadora Tonks announced, grinning at Talbott Winger, who sat alone.

“Barnaby and I are going to be undergoing magiozoology training together,” Liz Tuttle added. 

“And Barnaby will be living with Conor and myself in Dublin,” Sara responded, grinning at her boyfriend.

“Yep,” Barnaby agreed. 

“We’ll do our best, but life acts in funny ways. We’ll drift apart and come back together,” Cara mused, sounding like Hufflepuff’s former quidditch captain, Orion Amari.

“To coming together again,” Penny echoed, holding up her glass.

“Slainte!” Ryan cheered back.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Day One, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Calif., Oct. 4, 2024

Lucinda Williams was not at Day One of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. But Chuck Prophet, Ismay, Steve Earle and Kelly Willis - joined by Willis’ Wonder Women of Country bandmates Melissa Carper and Brennen Leigh - brought Williams’ spirit to the Banjo stage as the Songs from a Gravel Road Band.

They opened the festival guitar-pull style, trading such numbers as “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad” (Wonder Women), “2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten” (Earle) and “Crescent City” (Prophet) before ending with an all-hands-on-deck rendering of “All the Way to Jackson” a little shy of their scheduled 45 minutes of stage time.

Lindsay Lou followed on the Arrow stage sporting white shades and yellow flowers on her mic stand, into which she sang hilarious band introductions and turned them into a magnificent song of their own.

Lou and the all-woman, voices-of-goddesses Queen of Time Band - featuring Isa Burke on electric guitar and violin plus a rhythm section - used their 45 minutes to play a mix of Huffamoose-styled jazz, folk, rock and weepy country music as they offered up songs from the LP for which the band is named (“Nothing Else Matters”) and from across Lou’s discography (“Roll with Me”). And then they were off to catch a flight to the next festival.

So the Sound Biteses flew off to the Swan stage as the harmony-rich strains of the aforementioned Wonder Women wafted from the Banjo …

“… We’re going to slow it down a little bit,” the self-deprecating Milk Carton Kids said from the Swan, where they played their not-quite-ready-for-a-free-festival folk music for a large audience mixed with listeners and talkers. Those who shut their mouths and opened their ears were treated to the sonic heirs of Simon & Garfunkel - except funnier.

“It’s very hard to write a song on banjo without killing a person in the song,” Kenneth Pattengale said as he played a set heavy on selections from I Only See the Moon - and going all the back to “Michigan” - with fellow Kid Joey Ryan.

Surrounded by Golden Highway on the Banjo stage, Molly Tuttle recalled seeing her heroes as a child from the Hardly Strictly grass with her dad. And getting offered a pot brownie while at the festival with her mom.

“Your mom brought you all the way here just to offer you a pot brownie?,” banjoist Kyle Tuttle (no relation) asked incredulously and jokingly.

Playing high-energy, traditional-yet-modern bluegrass, the quintet offered a highly-apropos “White Rabbit” for the San Francisco audience; “San Francisco Blues,” meanwhile, was Tuttle’s waltzing paean to the hometown she left for Tennessee. “Down Home Dispensary” and “Dooley’s Farm” were Tuttle’s amped-up homages to ganja.

She doffed her wig for “Crooked Tree,” a song about what makes Tuttle, who has alopecia, and San Francisco, different - and so very special. Golden Highway received a rousing standing ovation at the end of their 55-minute set.

Sleater-Kinney provided the pre-show soundtrack to Cat Power Sings Dylan ’66 as their kinetic Swan-stage set flooded the field in front of Towers of Gold.

Immediately following their set, Power was barely audible as she sung “She Belongs to Me.” Power was like a whispering specter, guitar and harmonica nearly inaudible, causing Mr. and Mrs. Sound Bites to give up after a few songs only to find excellent sound at the Swan, where “It’s All over Now, Baby Blue” and “Mr. Tambourine Man” were as clear as bells behind where the music was being played.

A half-hour later, the strains of the full-band “Ballad of a Thin Man” could be heard a mile away on the JFK Promenade as Power wrapped her set.

Today's Bat: Fringe-Lipped Bat

Your best friend sets you up on a blind date. She says, "He's a real foodie, has great facial hair, and he makes his own cologne!" You're a little apprehensive when you're packed into a Jeep, and become even more so as you're taken out to the Peruvian Amazon. You find yourself alighted to a beautiful stream... the romance in the air crests... and you look up into the face of your date:

Environmental Impact: These guys are fairly omnivorous, though they're best known for eating frogs (more on this in the Power rating). They've got a wide range across northern South America, and are of no conservational concern. Their usefulness knows no bounds: they're a foundational food source for predators, they control pest species like katydids and mosquitos, they provide fertilizer in the form of guano, and they're choice research specimens thanks to their sociable natures and unique behaviors.

Beauty: Look at that mug. Those namesake lip protrusions are a real showstopper. Additionally, Fringe-Lipped Bats are famous perfumeries: they're well-studied for their "forearm crusts", which are orange patches along their wings where they cake a musk-and-fruit scented mixture of glandular secretions and saliva. These crusts are lady magnets (read: sexually selected traits). Researchers have reported locating roosts based on the group's collective odor. If human beings can appreciate the smells of whale vomit and beaver ass, I think we can make room in our hearts for Fringe-Lipped Bat crusts.

Power: As promised, it's time to discuss this bat's superpower. The whiskers aren't just for show: they can sense the presence of poison. This, combined with their ability to differentiate between vocalizations, allows the bat to select only the most delicious frogs. They have the ability to eat nearly anything (including other bats!!), yet they continue to refine their palates. Respect.

Overall: The Fringe-Lipped Romeo is infinitely loveable. I'd highly recommend looking into Merlin Tuttle's research and photography of this species... and honestly, everything else Merlin Tuttle does. No further notes.

About a year ago, I drove through an ice storm from Washington DC back to Dallas in order to make Authentically You. It was an extremely difficult time for me—but because this project was so close to my heart, it got me through. Like Grandes Momentos, this piece is a personal testament to the places and people that made me who I am. Using a docu-style commercial approach, Authentically You conveys a sense of personal style and story, merging both my background in the Dallas & Denton Music scene with my craft in filmmaking. It was a challenging and cathartic revelation both on set and its final form as to who I was, who I am and who I yearn to be.

Thank you to everyone involved in this–Every single cast member and location in this piece has a strong attachment both to a very unique scene of artists and to myself. Thank you to the dedicated crew who understood the intricacies of my vision and supported me throughout it all.

Finally, I want to give a huge shout out to every single musician in Denton and Dallas and beyond. For giving me a home when I needed it the most, for being my friends when no one else would, and for inviting me in without hesitation. To the relentlessness of those living in the margins by their own means, to every artists that says “fuck you” to the status quo and dreams bigger than most people dare.
