[ad_1] The Atlanta Falcons activated Eddie Goldman from the reserve/retirement list Tuesday, nearly eight months after the veteran defensive tackle signed with the team and then retired weeks later.Goldman could join a remade defensive lineman rotation featuring Grady Jarrett, Ta'Quon Graham, free agent signing David Onyemata and Timmy Horne, an undrafted free agent from 2022 who started five games as a rookie.Goldman signed a one-year contract with Atlanta last July as part of a litany of former Bears players to join the Falcons, who had hired former Bears general manager Ryan Pace as a senior personnel executive in 2022. He then retired on July 19, just 13 days after signing with Atlanta and before he participated in a single practice with the club.Goldman was thought to be a potential starter for the Falcons last season before he walked away. It is unclear why Goldman decided to retire abruptly last offseason.Goldman, 29, was a second-round pick by the Bears in 2015 and played 81 games for Chicago, including 73 starts. He recorded 175 tackles and 13 sacks. [ad_2] Source link

Saints excited for game-changing DT David Onyemata to return vs. Rams: 'He's playing to dominate'
The New Orleans Saints defensive line looked vastly different during Monday's win against the Houston Texans.
The Saints were without veterans Sheldon Rankins, Mario Edwards Jr. and David Onyemata, but Onyemata will return to the interior defensive line against the Los Angeles Rams.
And Onyemata's teammates are excited to get him back.
"He's a literal quiet storm," Rankins said. "He doesn't really say much until he hits the white lines. And then he talks the most trash of probably anybody on the team."
Onyemata missed the game because of the one-game suspension he received for violating the league's substances of abuse policy.
It was the first game Onyemata missed in his four-year NFL career. The Saints elevated him back to the active roster Tuesday, waiving Mitchell Loewen as the corresponding move.
"Hell of a player. No doubt," defensive lineman Cameron Jordan said of Onyemata on Wednesday. "I'm expecting a three-piece game like the Dallas game last year."
That "three-piece" Jordan refers to is how Onyemata sacked Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott three times in the Thursday night clash, one sack shy from tying the franchise record for most in a game.
He'd never had a multiple sack or multiple tackle-for-loss game before then.
"He definitely changes the game," defensive lineman Marcus Davenport said. "He garners a lot of attention and he deserves it."
Onyemata finished last season with 4½ sacks, 35 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, a pass defensed and a forced fumble.
"He brings a can of — I'll just let you finish that," Davenport said. "It's consistently every play. He's playing to dominate. It's definitely great to have that inside."
Onyemata, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle, first started playing football while in college at Manitoba.
His suspension stemmed from a misdemeanor marijuana citation he received in February. Deputies seized three ounces of marijuana, cannabis oil, edibles and hemp powder during a search of his apartment.
Onyemata was cited by the sheriff's office after the agency began investigating a package that U.S. Customs & Border Protection personnel seized in Buffalo, New York, on Jan. 28.
The NFL issued his suspension in June.
The Rams are fully aware of what Onyemata brings to the game, and Rams coach Sean McVay said Wednesday his team has to account for Onyemata's vacancy when looking at the film.
"I think when you just look at their front across the board, you see why they were one of the top rush defenses in the league," McVay said of the Saints as a whole. "And really when you look at the latter half of the year starting when we played them and then going on until the end of the season, they were one of the best defenses in the NFL.
"I thought they played at a really high level. They’re physical. Coach Allen does a great job mixing it up and then when you got great players to match it, it's a great challenge and getting David back will definitely give them a boost on the interior for sure.”
Without Onyemata, the Saints sacked Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson six times Monday, picking up where they left off last season. Those six sacks — two by Trey Hendrickson, one by Alex Anzalone, one by Jordan, one by P.J. Williams, half of a sack each by Malcom Brown and rookie Shy Tuttle — tied the team's game-high from last season.
The Saints defense tallied 49 sacks last season, tying for the fifth-most in the league.
But with Onyemata re-instated, New Orleans' defense has yet another weapon in its arsenal.
"Once he hits those white lines he's a warrior," Rankins said. "He goes to battle and he leaves nobody to live, so to speak, when he's out there. So get getting the guy back obviously with his talent but with his mentality that he plays with is big for the defense."

Jets bolster D-line with DT Rankins, source says
Tumblr media
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets added another key piece on their defense, agreeing Sunday to a two-year contract with former New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, a league source confirmed.
Rankins, a former first-round pick who turns 27 on April 2, can earn as much as $17 million over the last years, the source said.
This gives the Jets another starting-caliber player for the interior of their new 4-3 front. Rankins will join Quinnen Williams and Folorunso Fatukasi as their top defensive tackles.

After 15 years as a 3-4 base defense, the Jets are making the conversion to a 4-3 under new coach Robert Saleh, who likes to rotate his linemen. Previously, the Jets signed former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carl Lawson to a three-year, $45 million contract. Jarrad Davis, formerly of the Detroit Lions, is projected to start at linebacker after signing a one-year, $5.5 million deal.
Rankins was the 12th-overall pick in the 2016 draft out of Louisville. He battled a series of injuries throughout his five-year career in New Orleans.
The 6-foot-2, 305-pounder projects mainly as a three-technique defensive tackle, though he has lined up at multiple positions. He has 17.5 sacks in the regular season, plus two more in the playoffs. He had his best season in 2018 with eight sacks and 40 tackles while starting all 16 games. But he tore his Achilles in the Saints’ playoff opener that year and has come off the bench to rotate with starters David Onyemata and Malcom Brown since the injury.
Rankins also missed seven games as a rookie with a fractured fibula, three games in 2019 because of season-ending foot surgery and four games in 2020 with a sprained MCL in his knee. However, he insisted recently that he is as healthy as he has been since 2018 and feels ready to return to peak form.
Despite the injuries, the Saints were still high enough on Rankins to pick up his fifth-year option for 2020 at the rate of $7.69 million.
ESPN’s Mike Triplett contributed to this report.

NEW YORK | Saints' Onyemata fined $40.1K for 2 roughing passer calls
New Post has been published on https://www.stl.news/new-york-saints-onyemata-fined-40-1k-for-2-roughing-passer-calls/170365/
NEW YORK | Saints' Onyemata fined $40.1K for 2 roughing passer calls
NEW YORK  — Two illegal hits cost David Onyemata more than he made for playing in New Orleans’ season opener.
The Saints defensive tackle was fined $40,108 by the NFL on Friday for two roughing-the-passer calls — $20,054 for each of the penalties — in a 48-40 loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday.
The first came in the third quarter on an incomplete pass by Ryan Fitzpatrick, when Onyemata violated the new rule requiring defensive players to avoid putting their full weight on quarterbacks.
The second occurred during a 36-yard touchdown catch by DeSean Jackson in the fourth quarter when Onyemata made contact with Fitzpatrick’s helmet.
Onyemata, in his third NFL season, makes a base salary of $630,000 this season — or $39,375 per game.
Onyemata was one of several players fined $20,054 for roughing the passer in the league’s opening weekend, joining the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald, Minnesota’s Sheldon Richardson, Atlanta’s Grady Jarrett and Dallas’ DeMarcus Lawrence.
New England safety Duron Harmon was fined $26,739 for his hit on Houston wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, which drew a flag for unnecessary roughness.
Los Angeles Rams cornerback Marcus Peters has to pay $13,369 for his excessive celebration after returning an interception during which he jumped backward into the end zone and grabbed his crotch against Oakland.
Pittsburgh cornerback Artie Burns was fined $13,369 for removing his helmet and slamming it to the turf after a scuffle with Cleveland wide receiver Jarvis Landry.
Miami defensive end Andre Branch was docked $10,026 by the league for taunting after a blindside block of Tennessee left tackle Taylor Lewan, who suffered a concussion on the play. After an interception of Marcus Mariota, Reshad Jones was returning down the sideline in the third quarter when Lewan was pursuing him. But Branch hit Lewan from the left side and knocked him to the ground, causing a shoving match between the teams.
Branch was later caught by television cameras shouting, “Body bag!” at Lewan as the offensive lineman left the field and headed to the locker room. Branch was not flagged for the hit, but was penalized for taunting — as was teammate Jordan Phillips, who was also fined $10,026.
Cincinnati safety Shawn Williams was fined the same amount for his late hit on Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck. He was ejected from the game for the penalty.
Also fined $10,026 by the NFL on Friday were Jets rookie Parry Nickerson (taunting), Baltimore’s Matt Judon (unnecessary roughness), Buffalo’s Dion Dawkins (unnecessary roughness) and Jacksonville’s Yannick Ngakoue (facemask) and Cam Robinson (unnecessary roughness).

Report: Saints' David Onyemata gets one-game suspension for violating NFL substance policy
New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata received a one-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Onyemata was cited by the the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in January after he allegedly had marijuana delivered to his home. The 26-year-old was drafted by the Saints in 2016 and has started 10 games during his career, including four last season.
Friday's news answers one of the biggest questions of the offseason. How many games Onyemata would miss, if any, was a big concern. Especially since the Saints will also be without defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins to start the season. Rankins is recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in the playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Onyemata, entering the final season of his rookie contract, is coming off his best season. He recorded 4.5 sacks and 35 tackles in 2018.
Sean Payton addressed Onyemata's situation in May and was optimistic.
“We are working under the impression that he is with us and no we have not (heard otherwise),” Payton said.
Deputies seized nearly three ounces of marijuana, cannabis oil, marijuana edibles and hemp powder during a search of the defensive tackle's Elmwood apartment, according to a police report and a Sheriff's Office spokesman, Capt. Jason Rivarde.
Investigators believe the marijuana and other items were for Onyemata's personal use, and Rivarde said Onyemata was cooperative during the search.
NFL discipline for marijuana possession varies, though a positive drug test typically results in a four-game suspension.
