I love Red vs Blue, and I loved the Chorus arc, but they fucked up the character foils and it bothers me.

something about trust
Writing below the cut!
“How… does it feel?” Locus asked haltingly. Lopez shrugged. “<Weird. But I expected that.>” Locus hummed, his brow furrowed like he was lost in thought as he scanned Lopez’s face. Lopez grabbed Locus’ wrists, bringing his hands to his throat.  “What are you--?” “<One way to test it. Take my head off.>” Locus’ eyes widened, his expression turning panicked. He tried to pull his hands away, but Lopez held him steady. “<You are the only person strong enough,>” Lopez said firmly, giving the other no room to balk any further. “<If this synthskin doesn’t fix the problem, I want to know now, not later.>” Lopez could feel the way Locus’s hands shifted, his fingers flexing as he fought some internal debate. Lopez couldn’t read his mind, but the flicker of those marble grey eyes was telling as Locus looked at his hands around Lopez’s throat, then to his face and then back again and again. “<It doesn’t hurt, if that’s what all this fuss is about.>” Not strictly true, having his head removed wasn’t exactly a pleasant feeling. But better to do it now, with some degree of control, than in the middle of a fight or an accident. The sensation of feeling everywhere his skin touched was strange though, the normally very localized sensors spread out across the surface of the synthskin. Was this how humans felt things all the time? No wonder they were so easily distracted. Neither of them moved. “You’re certain?” Locus asked finally, his voice little more than a whisper. Lopez raised an eyebrow and let himself grin just a little at being able to convey the sentiment properly. Maybe there were some advantages to the synthskin after all. “<I wouldn’t have said it if I wasn’t.>” A nod, then the pressure. Lopez knew Locus was strong, for a human, but the feeling of his hands tightening around his neck and pulling at his jaw, the base of his metal skull…  His head didn’t budge, and the pressure eased. Lopez clicked his tongue, releasing Locus’ wrists. “<Good. That is one problem fixed, at least.>”

I… actually disagree with this… (no hate to the tagger at all)
The way the show tries to justify the killing of the Charon soldiers following the anti-war message of vol. 12 is by having Felix and Locust hire prisoners. HOWEVER, it is important to remember that they killed those who didn’t join them. This fact reinforces the idea of armed forces gaslighting less fortunate people into joining.
The war in vol. 13 is a fight between the people of Chorus and Charon, which started the initial war with the plan of completely wiping out the inhabitants to mine Chorus of its resources and artifacts. It is literally a fight against the ruling class that is starting these war for their own profit, and the foot soldiers are now explicitly forced into service.
Back to the part where they blow up all those kidnapped soldiers who were forced into service, though. From a meta-perspective, I definitely see how sacrifices had to be made in terms of evolving the theme of “war bad” into “war is a tool the rich use to gain more wealth and power” and also to keep the show consistent (the Reds and Blues wouldn’t go out of their way to spare these enemy soldiers).
On a character-level, it’s important to note that the Reds and Blues are still entrenched in this system, whether they know it or not. They are solving issues through the violence of war. After the events of the Freelancer Saga, when they crash on Chorus, they remain split into different squads. Washington becomes the commanding officer of the Blues. THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY HOME! Even if they were headed back to Blood Gulch or Valhalla, those are still army bases. They are unable to escape the armed forces brainwashing.
The war is not meant to be “righteous”. The idea is that war is an awful thing, but once it starts, it runs its course until the end. The show does its best to convince us that the Reds & Blues are on the morally right side of the war to distract us from the fact that they are still complicit in the horrors of the war. War is part of who they are.
It is my opinion that the overarching theme of Red vs Blue is not as simple as “war is bad”. The overarching theme of Red vs Blue is this:
Wars are started solely in the interest of the ruling class. They are facilitated by the brainwashing of lower classes into believing that they are fighting for themselves rather than the true benefactors. This brainwashing goes so deep that “war” becomes its victim’s lifestyle, and continues to reproduce tragedy in the lives of everyone it touches, like a virus. The best we can do is take down the *real* enemy—the ruling class who start these wars—with us and be aware of why we are even here in the first place to prevent the spread of the cancer. If we only have a red base here because they have a blue base there, and they only have a blue base there because we have a red base here, then this fight is a manufactured one, and I’ll give you one guess as to who manufactured it. And sure, even if all we can do is fight, we may lose. But, we have to have faith that someday we can live in a world.
We just have to have faith.
Tumblr media
Once again thinking about how Red vs Blue goes from “haha funny Halo machinima show” to “war is a truly deplorable thing that has horrific effects and only serves the self-interests of the elite who carelessly throw away the lives of the working class and civilians for their own wealth and power, and that the soldiers who fight in these wars are effectively groomed into the army through patriotism, poverty, social pressures, and the promise of a better life they will never see. Soldiers are tricked with us vs them mentality, and are told not to think critically about the people they kill because they are simply on the other side”

Say about red vs blue whatever you want but it is fucking comedy gold. The dialog is hilarious, dumb and clever at once and the flow is amazing and the interactions so organic (also the voice acting is A+). And season 6? Reconstructions?
Like, the shift of it. Its still silly and dumb and they are so far from competent but putting agent Washington into the mix is soo good. Like before it was a bunch of bumbling fools trying to deal with whatever dumb shit but really not wanting to and generally making things worse. Now you have wash who is driven and goal oriented and driving the narrative compared to the blood gulch crew who was mostly unwillingly draffed along by the narrative (and now Wash lol).
And the back and forth of the chairmans and the directors letter? The way it gives us crombs and little implication but not really any explanation but as time goes on you can slowly puzzle it all together. The ever growing hostility and intensity of the exchange.  The way it all falls into place at the revelation of the ai. The impact of washs line of “You are the alpha” (and frankly how fucking hilarious churchs reaction was).
The joke about the reds deleting the blues from the database as just something dumb they did that just happened to stop wash from proving church was an ai but actually shaped the story so much. Causing wash to end up in prison because he had nothing to prove his story and argue his case. The fact the unsc couldn’t take epsilon because they didn’t know about caboose. How wash could use that as leverage lately.
And yeah, it does not yet have the same amazing action scenes we get from this one goes to eleven on or anything but damn, the confrontation between wash, the director, the consoler and the meta was still so intense, like goddamit.
The line “And while the law has many penalties for the atrocities we inflict on others, there are no punishments for the terrors that we inflict on ourselves.”? Uff…
And by then, you know, right? But still the absolute gut punch of the seasons final words
Sincerely yours, the former director of Project Freelancer, Doctor Leonard Church.

red vs. blue started out as a weird, confusing, meaningless, nonsensical show about some guys playing video games and fucking around; lost its way somewhere in the middle and accidentally became a really well written character-driven epic sci-fi action dramedy about the nature of war and the path to redemption; but finally found its way back to its roots in the end with a weird, confusing, meaningless, and nonsensical season 19 finale after 21 long long years. and i'm not lying or joking even a little bit when i say this: i think that's beautiful.
