Last year, I wrote an essay discussing how the Law of Cycles could be considered an Uwasa (Rumor) by Magia Record lore logic, but it wasn't until my rewatch of the MR anime that I realized the same could also be said of Walpurgisnacht. We literally have a Rumor introducing her into the narrative at the end of S2x05, "I Won't Forgive Anyone"!

"Did you see it? Did you see her? The greatest, most terrible, the most powerful Witch of them all? If summoned by the power of the Uwasa, she would turn the land to ash and the skies to empty void, and civilization would cease to exist. That's what everyone in the Wings of Magius says! All hope will die on this day, and on this day a new hope will be born. Despair itself was created for this witch. For magical girls to change their fate!"

This "Rumor of Walpurgisnacht" not only succinctly introduces Walpurgisnacht to the narrative, it also provides an additional reason why Walpurgisnacht is coming to Kamihama in this iteration beyond the witch-luring macguffin the Wings of Magius are using to draw them in. In this sense, this Rumor is an MR-only addition that doesn't exist in the context of the original series.

For those not familiar with Magia Record, Rumors/Uwasa are witch-like entities created by Nemu Hiiragi's unique magic which obey certain rules in order to function. In that sense, Walpurgisnacht is definitely not an Uwasa sensu stricto, as her existence predates Nemu's.

However, just like the Law of Cycles--a promised savior which magical girls know about via rumors--Walpurgisnacht is also known through rumors well before she arrives in the narrative. In the original anime, Mami already knows this witch coming in the first timeline, and Touka and Nemu already know about her in this particular MR timeline as well. Stories about a massively destructive witch have been passed down from magical girl to magical girl over time... just like knowledge of the Uwasa are "transmitted" in Magia Record and just like the Law of Cycles at the end of the original anime.

In addition to setting up yet another parallel between Walpurgisnacht and the Law of Cycles, this would also explain why Walpurgisnacht does not appear to drop a grief seed when defeated by Madoka in earlier timelines (which leads directly to Homura being forced to kill her in a particularly traumatic iteration). (There is a grief seed in the PSP game, which is pre-Rebellion/Magia Record, but we'll see if that particular detail ends up being retconned out in Walpurgis no Kaiten.) Walpurgisnacht as an Uwasa-like being would explain why she acts and appears differently from other witches, despite ostensibly being a witch herself.

One other interesting thing about Uwasa is that they have the ability to "possess" magical girls--as seen with Tsuruno and Mami in Magia Record, and arguably Madoka in Rebellion. It is possible to forcibly separate the two after fusing, but only if the person attempting it truly understands the heart of the one who is possessed. It's easy to see how this could potentially be a key plot point in Walpurgis no Kaiten, with a tidy bit of symmetry--just as Homura wrested Madoka from the Law of Cycles, perhaps Madoka will return the favor in the future.

Rebellion also has other instances of proto-MR mechanics, such as Mami's use of Connect magic in her joint "Tiro Duet" attack with Madoka. It's not impossible there will be other carryovers from MR in Walpurgis no Kaiten, especially since Inu Curry was heavily involved in all three productions and has been extremely consistent with their symbolism thus far. This is just a tentative theory at the moment, but file this one under the "I am watching closely" tab.

The Golden Deer:

You could technically submit any of the three houses and have them fit but I feel like none of them quite embody the spirit of found family like the Golden Deer. Other than being from the same place, there's nothing that inherently connects them to each other. There are a lot of barriers between them, class, upbringing, trauma. But despite all that they manage to come together in their own messy way. Their route is all about the importance of unity and coming together despite any differences that might exist and they show the strength that comes from embracing diversity.

Mikazuki Villa:

Mikazuki Villa is a boarding house owned by Yachiyo, and previously Yachiyo's grandmother. Yachiyo is a magical girl veteran of 7 years. Over those years, there had always been a group of magical girls staying at the house, whether it be just hanging out or living there. The first person was Mifuyu Azusa, another magical girl veteran who's been a magical girl the same amount of time as Yachiyo. Then Kanae joined them, although she died to a witch sometime after. The next to join were Momoko and Meru. Tsuruno joined after them. The group went out to hunt a witch one day, but Tsuruno couldn't make it. Meru ended up dying that day, but this time she had turned into a witch. Yachiyo started suspecting whether her friend's deaths were her fault becuase of her wish. Since her wish was "to survive" (in refrence to her career as a model) she wondered if her friends has died so that she could survive. Since both Meru and Kanae died protecting her. And then Mifuyu disappeared (she joined a magical girl cult, but Yachiyo doesn't know that), which was the final straw for Yachiyo. She ended up pushing Momoko and Tsuruno away. It stayed that way until Iroha arrived at the city, searching for her little sister, Ui, who she had forgotten about, as all evidence of Ui's existence had inexplicably disappeared. Yachiyo ended up helping her, along with Tsuruno. Yachiyo kept both of them at arm's length though. During the search for Ui they picked up Felicia and then Sana. Felicia was an orphan who's family was "killed by a witch" (she actually killed them by accident and wished to forget it happened, thats a whole other story tho) and would kill any witch in her path out of rage, hoping that she'll eventually find and kill the witch that took her family away from her. She lived as a magical girl mercenary before she was basically adopted by the others so that she wouldn't starve. She loves Dragon Ball (or the pmmm equivalent of it) and cows. That doesn't relate to anything, but I think it's cute.

And then there's Sana, who wished to become invisible. She was always a disappointment in her family, and eventually they disowned her because of it. Her family went on with life as if she never existed, ignoring her. She felt that it would be better off if she just disappeared, so that's why she wished what she did. Iroha and the group found her in the rumor of the Endless Solitude, where she lived with an AI called, uhm, Ai. Ai actually contacted Iroha to save Sana because she knew that she wouldn't be able to stay with her forever. Iroha was the first person to ever say she needed Sana, and after they destroyed Ai, Sana went with them. It seems a itty bit cruel to destroy Ai but it was necessary since her barrier was literally being used as a storage site for witches (thnx Alina. I love her though, Alina is my favorite Magireco character apart from Karin). Sana starts to warm up to the rest of them, and realizes this is what family is supposed to feel like. And then ummmm... Felicia, Tsuruno, and Sana get brainwashed and recruited into the cult by Mifuyu!! Yachiyo, who had started to let her guard down, decides to break up the team. She tries to push Iroha away just like she did the other group. But Iroha pushes back, and promises Yachiyo that she won't die. The two work together to find the others after that. They find Sana and Felicia, whose brainwashing had worn off (Mifuyu has actually helped them escape, as the brainwashing hadn't been her idea), but not Tsuruno. Tsuruno had actually been fused with a Rumor (thnx Alina) and was going to be forced to commit mass murder! Average Tuesday. They eventually find Tsuruno but realize somethings wrong with her. They were told by Mifuyu that, to free Tsuruno from the Rumor, they had to "connect hearts" with her (I forget the exact wording, but basically they had to fully understand her and then connect with her using their magic. "Connect" is actually a game mechanic that lets magical girls combine their magic). But, when Yachiyo tried to do that, it didn't work. https://youtu.be/Hc4ED9TBX18 (watch this) You see, Tsuruno on the surface is very energetic and happy and sunny all the time. She titles herself "The Mightiest Magical Girl" and has the power to back that claim. She's basically a straight A student at school with perfect attendance (until the brainwashing). And shes just a very kind person in general. Except she has a habit of bottling up her feeling and masking her worries. Meru's death actually affected her quite a lot. She blames herself for it, since she wasn't there. She feels pressured to keep up her appearance as "The Mightiest". Yachiyo even fed into it, though it was accidentally (she was going through some shit after Meru died as well). Yachiyo realized this after she recognized Tsuruno's expression as the one she wore after visiting an amusement park with Yachiyo and Momoko sometime after Meru's death. She was able to truly connect with Tsuruno after that realisation. And after that incident, the whole group made sure to support her so she didn't have to deal with everything on her own anymore. Ui was the last addition to the group after Iroha saved her from her state as a "half-witch". I'm not going to try to explain that here as it's unrelated.

Long story short, her best friends from the hospital (she had a heart disease, and Iroha's wish cured her from it) stopped her from turning fully into a witch, but to do that one of them had to erase all memories of her with a rumor. Yeah, her best friend was creating the rumors. The rumor implanted false memories of Touka and Nemu (her friends) trying to save all magical girls along with Alina, an artistic prodigy who was staying at the hospital after to a failed suicide attempt. Their key to saving magical girls was Ui's half formed witch. Which they formed the cult around. Ui got saved though! :D Buttttt her half witch broke into some peices scattered around, which the collection of is basically the main plot of arc 2. They made a home for each other and stuck together through the trials and tribulations of arc 1, even putting their life on the line for eachtoher. And all of this, is why Mikazuki Villa is THE BEST found family. I hope you've watched Madoka Magica before, because if not, this would make zero sense. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BOTH MADOKA MAGICA AND MAGIA RECORD!! Magireco is a lil harder to find, but you find it on youtube at Magia Union Translations. Don't watch the Magireco anime, it sucks.

Who was the uhhhh the girl who absorbed all the kimochi stones? I thought she had a distinct upgraded form for that? it may have only appeared in CGs, but I'm *pretty* sure it had sprites...also Holy Alina who definitely did. Rereading the rules I may just not understand the selection process (if I guess they didn't also have pajamas/a swimsuit/etc they'd be fully excluded?) but I did like those too.

Honestly, Madoka and Homura should be number 1 in a two-packMadokami is iconic, I couldn't put it anywhere but 1st place!It's a shame that Sayaka has what looks like a swimsuit here.

I don't think Ui's alternate form is especially good, especially compared to my other choices, but I don't particularly like any of the other, so she gets one point for being a cutie.

what are some of the best magical girls and memoria for the current Kimochi? I’m not familiar with the meta at ALL and I’d like to know which girls - both limited and unlimited - are the best for this Kimochi. Are there any non flame attribute units that are good for this battle?

This kimochi is a magia-oriented one, so any attribute-strengthened magia-type flame girls are going to be best for damage. The best memoria are going to probably be mp gain up.

For magia-focused kimochi, you typically have a few roles:

damage dealer

buffer/debuffer/whatever

mp regen/mp regain

Some characters will fill multiple roles. Some characters will only fit one role. An example would be that for the recent dark kimochi, a common team you saw was:

Damage Dealer: Devil Homura, Kushu Irina, Kuroe

Buffs: Ebony, Kushu Irina

MP Regen: Kuroe, Madoka & Iroha

Kushu is a good damage dealer but her magia/doppel also buffs the team. Kuroe could deal good damage but she also gives everyone mp on her doppel, and so forth.

So this current kimochi is no different. You want to make a team that gives yourself a damage dealer, someone who will buff everyone, and someone who will assist in mp regen.

Going along with buffs, you also want someone who will remove granted effects from the enemy, as it will give itself damage cut. This makes units like Shizuka Tokime or the new Scene Zero Kyoko very good.

So I'll just break down the possibly useful flame girls here in the Damage Dealer/Buff-Debuff/MP Regen role.

The few past days of seeing discourse regarding Neil Gaiman and fanfiction reminds me of that time back in 2020 when a few MagiReco RPers and I did a thread where Sana got fused with the Anonymous AI Rumor and became an Uwasa like Uwasa Tsuruno.

And then a few months later Rumor Sana was revealed in the game.

The difference is that none of us were presumptuous enough to assume the people working on the game somehow knew about our RPs. If anything, it was an obvious plot that would be used at some point (fusing people to Rumors was a thing in canon, and Sana had a platonic relationship with an Uwasa).

At most we all just laughed about it and moved on. We were basically doing fanfic, after all.

They showed a preview of this year's Christmas character and its going to be Mikoto. This alt is another of those rumor fusions like Holy Mami and Rumor Tsuruno. The peculiar thing about this new Mikoto is that her hair is now red and blue, it reminds of Alear's hair.

Please tell me more about Tsuruno and tsukasa

Ofc ofc!!! Ok so like. Guess I'll go section by section-

THE BEGINNING:

In the beginning, it's sort of a magical girl rivalry - despite her power, Tsukasa is very impressed by Tsuruno! And vice reversa ofc - tsuruno has to wonder if the magic helps them play, or if it was just years of practixe - which, either way, it's super impressive and Tsuruno respects the practice! On opposing sides, there is a healthy rivalry and even tsukuyo notices her sister get in more scraps whenever they have to have to fight - otherwise they exchange witty remarks with each other and counterpoints to ideals about magius and magical girlness and doppels. On Tsuruno's side, as fun as it is to teach apprentices and have more experienced girls like yachio help her out, having a rival-rival is actually pretty fun! As much as their ideals are at opposite ends, they are having a good time despite the stakes at hand.

Honestly their rivalry is pretty friendly, and tsukuyo is happy to hear tsukasa ramble about how she'll best the powerful Yui Tsuruno next rather than her complaints of their father's nuttiness. Ofc tsukasa rarely wins tho.

Yachio and gang also get to hear plenty about tsukasa's strats from tsuruno, and some questions about the specific pieces she plays, if they are original and oooh maybe babanzai should have a music night that would be neat-

Phase 2: Tsuruno getting brainwashed by the wings of magius

One would have to assume, during this phase, Tsuruno spent plenty of time wandering about the main base of operations fendt hope. During this time, due to the influence of that brainwashing she's... having a tough time battling her guilt. And we all know what that does to soul gems and having yu hong situation would be bad to say the least. So as one that has to help monitor her... tsukasa helps!

It's in this time that they have ample time to sort of learn about each other. Ofc, Tsukasa is getting help from her sister to dodge alina and the girls unknowingly, and mifuyu is also encouraging the relationship bond a bit because god. Tsuruno needs some help.

Knowing of the traumatic, shocking way tsuruno learned of soul gems and witches, Tsukasa really starts feeling for her. If there's one thing they both have, it's a lot on their shoulders, and tsukasa was slightly wrong in assuming tsuruno had anything easier than she did. So while tsuruno is getting pretty warped by the higher ups, and tsukasa is starting to regret her choice of side, tsukasa does her best to bring Tsuruno relief. And she's so stressed, it doesn't take much gentleness to lull her.

(Tsukuyo and mifuyu are a bit worried for both parties.)

Phase 3: Oh god She's Been Rumored

So yeah, the chelation land rumor comes to fruition, and in the coming days, Tsukasa did witness a scary moment of Tsuruno almost breaking out of her brainwashed state, because of her knowing that the magius are going to make her kill a lot of people. Tsukasa was practicing in her own little quiet spot, and Tsuruno finds her and asks her to keep playing while she talks. So she gets to know Tsuruno's true feelings on the matter (her music is helping hold tsuruno's last moments of a clear head), and the thing is Tsuruno is horrified that they're going to use her to kill potentially thousands of people. This can include family - it will include classmates, friends.... it's horrifying. Ofc as tsuruno starts to panic and plead for help, that tsukasa is one of her only safe people to be around she has to just please help her, tsukasa ends up faltering and tries to do something, to say she'd try- but the wings have found them. And tsuruno goes quiet as nemu talks her through where she's to go. Alina smiles tsukasa's way and cruelly thanks her for the show.

So once days pass, and chelation land gets finished, soon to open, and dammit, tsukasa wants to check in on tsuruno once again. She's been sulking about not being able to help calm tsuruno non stop (in fact tsukuyo has only heard worries of tsuruno from tsukasa in the past days apart so she is helping her get there), and so before iroha and squad get to tsuruno, maybe a day before, tsukasa checks in on her. tsurumor is. Unsettling in her calmness, but nonetheless elated to see tsukasa.

And... it's hard for Tsukasa to ignore her influence on tsuruno still leaking through.

And um. Yeah Tsukasa almost became the first victim as she's caught in Tsurumor's work, ending up being swept into a sweet, slow dance with her. Under chelation land effects, tsukasa's little uh crush sort of eluhhh gets spoken of, too relaxed and giddy to think about secret keeping anything, and tsurumor says a response that. Tsukasa isn't sure what she means. and she. kinda needed the help of a doppeled Tsukuyo to escape. Yeah. At this point she's now trying to think of the best way to maneuver her feathers so that iroha and gang can get in without getting too much energy sapped.

Despite the brainwash, the trauma and the rumor fusion, Tsuruno does eventually recall what went on in those weeks in her recovery. Tsukasa hasn't seen her (up close) and kind of avoids out of fear and shame for a bit, but frequently asks for updates from Mifuyu.

When they do eventually encounter each other again, tsukasa kinda. Runs. She has convinced herself tsuruno is mad at her. Tsuruno gives chase because "oh god did i do something while i wasnt myself HEY COME BACK I HAVE TO GIVE APOLOGIES". Silly little misunderstanding arc later and. They come to the understanding that they were just. Silly and worried and. Tsuruno asks the tough question of if what she said was true. About. Liking her like that. Tsukasa. Feels like her heart is swallowing itself and she is. Imploding. Meanwhile in reality she is frozen for a bit, getting redder and redder and tsuruno is worried. And all tsukasa can do is just go. "S.Sure is~ I'm sosoryybye" and off she runs.

Granted it does take time for them to come to a stable spot where they can talk their feelings out, especially as the amane twins pull away from the plots of the wings of magius, but they do end up together!

And as nervous as they both were, Tsuruno's dad is hella accepting and hella in the know and cool about it. He's just happy his daughter is safe and having a good time! And from what the girls have talked about over their meals in babanzai, if the man is given the opening he will absolutely verbally tear tsukasa's dad a new one for using his daughter like a work horse! At least he's a work horse alongside his daughter and doesn't berate her!

Anyhow- thank you for coming to my essay :)

Tl:dr tsukasa is the first to develop feelings and it's a shaky road of rivals to friends to dating but it does happen and its kinda sweet!

Ofc i could talk more about the fleshings out but i tried to make this a short essay and not a whole 1000k word fic or something but i have thought extensively abr rhe phases i just need to brush up on magireco since i haven't thought on it in a while!

Mami's introduction in chapter 3 has stuck with me since I originally read it all the way back on NA.

The setting is that one shrine in Mizuna Ward. A rumor describes this shrine as a place where you can be reunited with someone you've lost; Iroha and Yachiyo investigate both for Uwasa-hunting purposes and also because they both have someone they want to be reunited with (Iroha's sister Ui and Yachiyo's ex Mifuyu). The Uwasa turns out to just make shitty copies -- if memory serves, Mifuyu later explains that she wanted to fuck with Yachiyo's head -- and so the duo (plus Tsuruno who is also there) get thrown headfirst into the labyrinth of the Uwasa of the Commoner's Horse, and proceed to get their collective asses kicked.

Uwasa are, at this point in the story, still an unfamiliar type of enemy (they've only faced one so far) with rules they don't understand, and so the proto-gen3-Mikazuki Villa are barely managing to scratch it. Iroha's soul gem is gradually getting more and more corrupted, and the scene is written to lean into that, doing a neat little fake-out where it reads like she's legitimately about to turn into a witch. The narrative cuts back and forth between Iroha's internal monologue as she's being consumed by her corruption, and Yachiyo desperately trying to hold the Uwasa back.

Then, without warning or explanation, she summons her doppel Giovanna for the first time.

Its aesthetics are obviously witch-like, but it's distinctly not one (in particular being directly fused to the magical girl's body), and it obeys its owner's will; once it's finished off the enemy, the master of this emotion finds her soul gem completely clean. (From an out-of-universe standpoint, doppels pull off the mixed-media aesthetic way better than standalone witches do; standalone witches usually look like shitty papercraft, with a few exceptions like Cool!Homulilly, but doppels get to be cool-ass monster designs that you could actually visualize as existing.) The idea of "oh, so that's what that girl in the prologue meant by in Kamihama magical girls can be saved, but regardless, what the fuck just happened" then persists as an overarching mystery for the next few chapters until the Magius reveal themselves and give a proper lecture on the matter.

It is only at this moment, with Iroha already having exhausted herself from beating the tar out of the Commoner's Horse, that Mami Fucking Tomoe shows up right the fuck out of nowhere to hold her at gunpoint, as an unfittingly heroic fanfare starts blaring -- the theme music of a hero so literally perfect that it warps the meta around her. Mami immediately makes it clear that, due to the witch-like nature of the doppel, she will refuse to recognize Iroha as human, and she only backs down when Momoko (arriving late with a full soul gem) calls her on blatantly trying to pick off a weak magical girl.

(Returning viewers from the TV anime will recognize "the fact that magical girls can become witches" as the thing that originally set Mami on her quest to murder all magical girls and then herself, so when her ex-girlfriend swings by Kamihama the next chapter to investigate her disappearance it's a very "oh shit" moment. And sure enough, she returns in chapter 6 as the Wings of Magius' pet nuclear laser wizard.)

i don't actually like mami tomoe all that much, but my friend does. to be clear, i mean i don't really like her as a person; as a character i think she makes a fairly compelling villain.
