Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III x Fem!Reader Synopsis: four of the many times hiccup was oblivious to the fact he was in love with you and the time he finally realised. Word Count: 1.5K Tags: 4+1 fic, Fluff, Hiccups pov Note: started this ages ago and only just got inspired enough to finish it.
1. Searching for you in a crowd
Hiccup would never admit it, even now that he is respected as the heir to the hairy hooligan tribe and his father is proud of him. That he still feels like an outsider.
Maybe it’s because they see him as this dragon master and while he might be if he’s to listen to anything Fishlegs says- he feels like they don’t see anything else- he is still just the chief’s son, the future of the tribe or their saviour if any of his work on the edge was talked about. He was never just Hiccup to them, even to his friends they see him as this omnipotent being rather than just a teen like them- capable of making mistakes.
He suggests that this is why he prefers to have time alone- just him, toothless the ocean beneath them and the wind carrying them elsewhere, where he can be anything.
Annoyingly, this is not something he can do now: walking into the great hall at dinner time. He can already feel the beginnings of a headache wracking his brain as he imagines the awkward conversations he is going to have with villagers about his work on the edge as of late or the nagging of his father and Gobber to come back to Berk so he can learn the ways of chiefdom- something he is unsure that he even wants.
Entering the great hall after a large exhale, Hiccup looks around, searching for something lips pursing when he can’t find it immediately. It is only when he walks closer to where his father is sat, calling out pleasantries to those who greet him on the way that his eyes lock onto your figure, listening intently to what Ruffnut and Tuffnut are saying. Following the movements of their arms with your eyes as they spoke animatedly about who knows what. Hiccup finds a small smile appear on his face at the sight of you, only looking away when his father claps a hand behind his back making him aware of his surroundings, turning towards his father struggling to listen to whatever issue his father needs resolving around Berk this time, his thoughts still surrounding his best friend, knowing that as long as you are here he can be himself, just Hiccup. As that was always more than enough for you and that idea alone makes him feel less like an outsider.
2. Missing you when apart
He was starting to regret saying you couldn’t come with him. Not that he doesn’t enjoy Astrid and (sometimes) Snotlout’s company, but it clearly isn’t the same. While he usually enjoys scouting missions as they are a peaceful opposition to the dangerous missions they have had as of late, you typically come with him.
But he knows that you cannot leave the edge defenceless and Astrid was complaining about not getting out with Stormfly enough- so it all made sense logically for Astrid to come instead and for you to stay on land, protecting the dragon eye lenses the group had hidden.
He couldn’t trust anyone more which is why he was confused as to why he felt so anxious. Even Toothless could notice the angst radiating off his rider, making a noise of questioning at Hiccup when he was quieter than normal, not even going over the route the group were scouting- something he usually did a hundred times until the group got annoyed at him. Not even playfully joking with Snotlout about who was the better cousin until Astrid would make a comment that would set Snotlout off arguing with her.
Instead, the three riders sat in somewhat awkward silence with Astrid and Snotlout starting at each other trying to gauge if the other knew what was wrong with the boy and who was going to ask him as seemingly neither wanted to as usually you would look after Hiccup when he got like this but you were back on the edge and honestly Astrid was wishing she didn’t kick up such a fuss about her and Stormfly’s lack of action as even being bored back on the edge was better than being sat in this haunting silence.
It was only upon returning to the edge that the two saw his mood pick up, he nearly crashed Toothless into the ground at the speed he dismounted causing the other two to look around in panic until they saw him running towards you and then it all made sense. The two snickering slightly as they realised that he was only in a foul mood because you weren't around.
3. You looking after him when he gets sick
“It was only a matter of time” you muttered to him as you bundled him up in his blankets and he knew that you were right, you had been telling him for weeks to wear some warmer clothes during his flights with Toothless and his lack of listening has left him bedridden with a horrible cold, head pounding, nose blocked and red cheeks. He could only imagine the state of him somehow shaking and sweating all at the same time. He would’ve replied with something teasing if his throat didn’t feel so scratchy so he simply settled for a huff which made you laugh quietly in return.
“Okay, I will stop being mean, but only if you get some sleep” you reasoned with the boy as he whined at the idea thinking of everything he had to today
“I will get Astrid and Fishlegs to take your jobs for the day- can't have you getting any sicker what would your Father say?” you continued and at these words, the boy stopped fussing, the exhaustion finally catching up to him.
“Have a good sleep Hiccup, I will be here when you wake up,” you muttered as he dozed off.
For some reason, Hiccup couldn’t understand those words made him feel so much better.
4. When his dad mentions you
Small talk with his father even after all this time was still somewhat awkward, like the feeling of your skin being too big for your bones. But, it was much better than it used to be or at least Hiccup usually believed it was. Still, today he would give anything to be anywhere but sit with his dad in their family home as he couldn’t stop going on about you and possibly betrothals something Hiccup knew would annoy you.
“I heard a lot of the boys around here want to ask for her hand, so maybe you should get a move on” Stoick spoke trying to hint at the boy's clear feelings for you
“I- what?” Hiccup asked confused, when had he ever shown interest in that?
“Oh it's nothing” Stoick tried to cover his tracks feeling Hiccups in annoyance at his words ‘you two just remind me of myself and a special someone when I was younger”
“What are you and Gobber? I’m sure she will be very flattered by those words Dad” Hiccup laughed before quickly taking his leave before his father could sprout out any more nonsense.
“Me and your mother” Stoick muttered but Hiccup was already gone, probably halfway back to the edge due to how fast he bolted out the door.
5. The realisation
Watching you interact with Toothless was one of Hiccup's favourite things to do. Seeing his dragon take a shine to you just as much as he does makes a warmth spread all over his body in a comforting way.
“Hiccup, my brother! What’s happening?” Tuffnut called out as he made his way towards the boy Hiccup quickly looked away from you for some reason embarrassed to be nearly caught by the boy, his cheeks red and hot
“Not- not a lot” Hiccup tried to smile but it came off uneasy much like his words. To his luck, Tuffnut didn't seem to notice instead looking at where Hiccup had his eyes trained just moments before before looking back at the boy
“Don’t worry I see” Tuffnut nodded in understanding causing Hiccup to become confused
“See what?” he questioned the peculiar boy
“You were finally building up the courage to ask her out!” Tuffnut declared “I mean it’s about time everyone knows you have the biggest crush on her! Don’t let me stop you, in fact, I wasn't even here!” the boy quickly ran off as Hiccup's thoughts whirled around his brain about what on earth was Tuffnut on about he didn’t have a crush on you. No way. I mean sure you are the first person he looks for in a crowd of people, he gets irritable when you aren't with him on missions, you are the only one he would want looking after him and his father loves you but that doesn't mean he likes you right- your his best friend he couldn't possibly- could he?
Then it hit Hiccup, he did have the biggest crush on his best friend, more than a crush really. He was irrevocably in love with you and to make matters worse Tuffnut knew before he did.

Since I dissociate i like to think All of the gang dissociate so hard, especially during rtte like they will be planning and hiccup will be like
Hiccup: “ok you all got that”
Snotlout raises his hand
Snotlout: “I have not present for couple days what the fuck is happening”
Hiccup: okay so-
Tuffnut also raises his hand
Tuffnut: “I don’t know what day it is”
Hiccup: oka-
Ruffnut also also rasies her hand
Ruffnut: I-
Hiccup: okay who all just got back
Que Astrid and fishlegs also raising there hands
Hiccup: okay.
They also will like ask each other how long time as passed inbetween events cause they weren’t present
Some just don’t remember events
Or like situations where they go back to berk
Stoick: Hiccup! It’s been so long since you came to visit your old man
Hiccup: what? I visited like a week ago?
Stoick: son. The last time you visited was like a month ago.
Hiccup: ….really?
Hunter: I don’t want to watch that one anymore.
Hunter: tf you talking about
Hunter: that one hasn’t blinked or moved in 3 hours
This could be any of them
Or all of them
It’s funnier when it’s all of them
Hunter: “I think the riders died”
Hunter: HWAT
Hunter: none of them have moved an inch in 6 hours
They also have moments where they just stop moving and the dragon will like just grab them by the scruff of there shirt and just bring them to there huts or one of the other riders to get them out of it
Having a hangout night
Tuffnut: oh guys! Guys! Guess what? I’ve figured out how to control that thing we do
Hiccup: wait what you did?!
Tuffnut: yeah watch this.
His eyes fuckin glaze over He’s gone he fucking somewhere else
Ruffnut: he knows how to start it just not how to get out
I know these are stereotypical but like…mine are like stereotypical somtimes leave alone

✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
All the fics I’ve read and really enjoyed in the past week-ish. Reminder: This list features any and all ratings and themes. Please look at tags and warnings on ao3 before reading.
DC
The Bachelor: Robin Edition by Vamillepudding
Gotham loses its Robin and Bruce Wayne loses a son. Tim finds one of these too tragic to bear. In his quest to make sure Bruce Wayne lives to see the next year, he strikes upon the perfect solution: another son.
-
His best bet is, naturally, Crime Alley.
By 8 pm that day, Drake Manor is filled with ten black-haired, blue-eyed boys sitting around the large dining table, looking around the room suspiciously.
Well. Eleven. But Tim doesn’t think he counts.
ATLA
Dish Duty by Princeliest
All Zuko had been trying to do was wash some dishes. Or: The one where Zuko and Katara both mean well, but still can't find their footing around each other in time to prevent explosive shouting, broken dishes, an impromptu arrest, and Team Avatar's third- nay, fourth jailbreak. Fifth? They've lost count at this point, but at least they're not willing to lose Zuko... now, if only he realized that.
Merlin
all oak and iron bound by numinousnumbat
Some of those born with magic are repelled by iron. Merlin wished he knew how much iron there was in Camelot before he started his new life there.
HTTYD
Abandon Hope Who Enters Here (everyone who enters here) by JaggedEmeraldsOfGold
Eret had spoken about the mindless cruelty of Drago’s base and soldiers, but there’s nothing like seeing it in front of her to make it really, really sink in. She’d wanted to empathize, but she doesn’t think she really understood.
She does now.
Astrid leans her head back until it hits the wall behind her, and blinks up at the ceiling.
It’s going to be a long three days.
Or: Instead of facing the Monstrous Nightmare in the Kill Ring, Hiccup packs up and leaves Berk on Toothless, defeating the Red Death on his own as he goes. Six years later, Hiccup has royally fucked up– Hiccup has severely underestimated Drago, and now Hiccup is cramped, tired, hungry, without his prosthetic, and he really, really, really misses Toothless.
Imagine his surprise (read: complete and utter dread) when he wakes up one day to see absolutely none other than Astrid Hofferson, Snotlout Jorgenson, Fishlegs Ingerman, and Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston sitting in the cell across from him.
against the wind by underpassgraffiti
When Hiccup and Snotlout get stranded, they have to work together to stay alive.
Easier said than done.
To End a War by GhostStone
Stoick may not listen to Hiccup, but there is one person he does listen to on occasion. And that one person just happens to be someone who will listen to Hiccup.
An AU where the night before he is meant to kill the dragon, Hiccup realized how awful his plan is and goes to Gobber for help.
the soul of a dragon by castelia
Soulmarks amongst humans are easily identifiable: they are words tattooed on skin, words to be spoken during the first moment where two people truly connect. No one believes dragons have soulmarks, let alone that a dragon and a human can share a soul bond.
Until Hiccup.

The Jealous One pt 8
Pairing: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III x Fem!Reader
Words: 1,862
In sickness and in health.
Tags: fem!reader, silly, ambiguous timeline, Snotlout Jorgenson, Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston, Jealous!Hiccup, Post RoB/DoB, Pre-RTTE
<Previous - Next>
You resisted the urge to cough violently, a tickling in your chest and that one mysterious, feather light spot in your throat
Your voice was nearly as nasal as Hiccup's and three times as raspy as anything you’d ever heard.
Basket held steady, you walked waveringly across the bridge from the forest to Berk.
It had taken a while to find what you needed, the plants hidden and the energy you’d spent searching had done little to calm your raw nerves.
The walk back had been long and now could taste mucus on your tongue and feel it thicken your throat, your sleeve coming up to rub at it and your nose once every few moments. It was nearly soaked, now, and the thought filled you with disgust.
You refused to believe it was sickness, even as you sensed hints of it along your breath and felt the bite of it marring the roof of your mouth.
You scowled grumpily just before you lost the battle, stumbling to a stop, your chest wrought with a brutal hacking.
Hiccup, a few steps ahead of you, looked back with concern, standing at the place where the bridge ended and wood met stone, “Are you sure you’re alright?”
“Urgh,” You groaned, realizing with dull irritation that you couldn’t breathe through your nose any longer.
You made it a few more feet, brushing in front of Hiccup, your aching walk-tired ankles and worn soles protesting the movement before you sniffed roughly and leaned -nearly collapsed- against the the one of one of the huts built into the side of the village’s spire.
While you were still standing, Hiccup walked easily up to you and lightly pulled your basket out of your hands, ignoring your sour, wordless grumbling, “How about I just… Take this, and you go lay down?”
You slumped against the floor, too weak to protest and figuring then that it would be as good a time as any to take a break, even if it was just a short one- You were realizing slowly that you would be needing it if you were going to make the walk back to your cabin.
You vaguely registered as Hiccup spoke again, a semi-sarcastic, “...That’s fine too.” easily leaving his mouth.
You heard a steady beating which you hoped meant that he was finally going to just leave you be, a sentiment made stronger by just the pure force of your miserable sickness.
You laid your head against the side of the wall hut, your knees up to your chest, blinking slowly and feeling fully feverish. It shouldn’t be terrible if you took a short nap, should it?
You woke up groaning nearly imperceptible, your breaths heavy and the pounding of your heart strong, with the feel of something heavy and hot on your forehead.
You felt slick with what was sweat, as you’d realized, after a nearly unbearable moment, shifting, unable to tell which direction was up or down by feeling even as your eyes fluttered slightly open to start at high wood roofing.
Everything was stuffy and heavy and you couldn’t make sense of anything, even as you turned your head to the side slightly, something you regretted as it sent an ache down your neck.
You felt something adjust the towel on your forehead, each fiber brushing against your heated skin, mournfully cold where it was absent even as you looked to the side with pained eyes, meeting the worn, tired face of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.
He was sitting on something wherever you were, obscured to you by your own weary, blurring vision, leaning on his knee with one arm and forwards towards you with his other.
As your vision faded further, you made a small noise in the back of your throat.
You were woken the second time by the feel of cold wood to your lips and something cooler peeking over its edge, wetting your lips and dry tongue.
Unnatural chills ran up and down your spine, the feeling of the air around seeming much too muggy for the wracking, sharp jabs running down your spine, feeling more raw than cold.
“Hey-” You heard a low voice, “Can you manage?”
It was stiff under you, what was maybe bedding or something else unliving and yet kind enough to hold you.
You knew not of what was dream and what was reality.
You closed your eyes again, unable to discern the difference between mumbled words and blurred sounds without thought and lacking the energy to try, everything around and under you feeling stuffed.
However, you did feel the distance- the absence of presence and the air circulating in unwelcome empty space.
You grabbed on to the corner of a sleeve, your arm thrown out limply. It nearly caused you to fall off the end of the bed, your opposite shoulder resting precariously against its edge with your arm folded under.
It was warmer up in the Chief’s hut- more so than any other spot on Berk besides maybe Gothi’s on the hottest sumarr's day and though colder than most, your friend always had been of unusually strong health despite being what he was- a Hiccup.
“Please…” You mumbled waveringly, unwilling to be left without that presence, nothing else existing in your mind at that moment, “Please stay.”
You didn’t know if it was real and you wouldn’t be sure later if you remembered though you were sure you wouldn’t.
You fell asleep to the feel of you being pushed further back onto the bed and to the feel of something heavy and covered in fabric scooting in behind you.
“-Ouch.” Hiccup sat guiltily upon his father’s chair, one hand on his knee, legs spread wide as he bent down to pick up a fallen plate from the floor.
“You’ve heard worse,” You snuffled thickly, shoving aside thoughts of not-reals and a lot of wishful thinking, “You’re lucky I’m not Astrid.”
You couldn’t come up with any other conclusion than the one that described a collusion between all three; you carried some of the chill from your night out drinking in the woods with you, then the unwilling ride in Toothless’ claws and the walk up into the hills and cliffs you’d spent had all come together and worsened everything until you’d ended up with the same sickness that described your current state.
Somehow, though, you felt in good humor, or perhaps it was regular humor. It didn’t matter, though. You didn’t feel particularly pleased or disheartened.
“I guess so,” You could feel his wince more than you saw it, looking at him from across the fire pit in his hut.
You were surprised that you’d been able to strike up conversation as easily as you had, about life and other things though not so in depth as to paint any real picture at all. You hadn’t brought up Snotlout or the Twins -not yet- though you felt that it was coming soon and it would cause at least some mild upset when and if it did.
There was a question that had been lingering on your mind for very obvious reasons, ones you still wished not to think in such plain terms, even if you knew them well.
You hadn’t been on good enough terms for a while to ask, annoyed as you had been as of late, nor calm enough in manner when you were younger to ask without feeding into the irritating pressure behind your eyes. However, sick though you were, with your stuffy head, nose and everything and your barely honey-soothed throat, you were sure enough to ask.
“So… What’s up with you and Astrid?” You asked Hiccup bluntly, burying your chin further into your wrap of cocoons, feeling your top lids droop heavily over your eyes with your contentment.
Hiccup cringed. You felt a measure of glee at his poor expression- it was the same look he worn, albeit less mournful, when you’d woken up earlier in that afternoon and asked him what had become of you, memoryless and unaware of how you’d found yourself in his bed on his loft and in his nearly empty home.
“She is not my girlfriend.” He spoke firmly, as if he already knew what you were going to ask next -as if he’d had to fend the jab off more than once- and he had, from you, something which you only used to prod at him when you were feeling exceptionally bitter but hadn’t the means or want to show it.
“Your ex, then?” You deadpanned nearly teasingly, “Or your battle buddy? In the simple platonic Viking sense.”
“Not even that.” Hiccup shrugged, looking at you unimpressively, “I-we just… didn’t click.”
You were thrown off guard slightly, though not thrown enough to deter you from anything. It was the first time he’d answered you and answered you truly- the reaction he’d posed and the one you’d usually been fishing for involved deflection if not mild indignation.
“Yeah?” You asked, shaking your head. It took you a moment to cough out the vowel, your voice cracking in an ungainly way.
You watched the odd contrast of shadow and light flicker across his face, both pronouncing and denouncing the lay of his cheekbones, the round of his cheeks.
You allowed yourself to enjoy the sight before you grew mad with him again, letting out a breath and leaning back slightly against pillows and plush, feeling terribly insightful and artisting as you took him in.
“I guess… She was worried you liked me. In the complicated non-platonic sense.”
You laughed lowly, as if you couldn’t escape the hilarity of it all, “Really?”
Oh, you probably owed her an apology. A terrible one.
You suppressed a shiver, letting out a shaky breath. The part of the blanket covering your neck fell slightly, stale, cold air hitting your back and rushing down your spine.
“… Did you?”
You shrugged, looking down and pursing your lips, watching the firelight flicker gently, swaying with the wind, crackling hypnotically in the space between the two of you.
You risked a glance towards Hiccup in an attempt to glean what he was thinking.
He seemed unsure. That’s all you could tell, all his brows, his jaw, the standard set of his shoulders gave away. The rest, you couldn’t tell.
For all the time he’d left you hanging and wanting and nearly yearning, you were sure that the answer you owed him was surely unkind, and the one you owed yourself was the one that spared you as much embarrassment as possible, having spent as much time stuck in such a terrible one-sided love as you had.
“Why would I?” You asked eventually, and you really meant it.
“You’re well, then.” Hiccup said, standing at his open door.
“I am well,” You looked down onto the floor, nearly rolling up and down on your toes, feeling quite empty with your affects wrapped up into a small bundle. It was one you held in your two hands by a leather strap. “Goodbye, then.”
As you left, you could almost imagine the soft whisper of another ‘goodbye’ following behind you on the wind.

So, I listened to Mufasa's 'I Always Wanted A Brother'(still yet to see the film lol) and seeing as I'm stuck in a HTTYD phase, I came up with an AU that circles around Eret and Hiccup becoming 'brothers'. It starts before the first film, Hiccup being 7 and Eret 11.
Young Eret is used by Drago as a punishment for his father, Eret I, the young Eretson cruely branded before being thrown into the sea to drown. He is later found Pirates of the Caribbean style by Stoick on one of his voyages. He and other vikings recognizing the brand on Eret, but Stoick brings him back to Berk reguardless of the other vikings suggesting to leave him at a trading place.
Needless to say, once Eret was on the island of Berk, he caught the attention of young Hiccup, who is again, seven, even before Eret woke.
It doesn't take long for the two to form a bond, Hiccup being a lonely child whose father is gone more often than not with the other children keeping their distance, and Eret being an abandoned child spending his first month or so on Berk healing from his burns and a illness he'd gotten from being in the cold ocean for hour before being found. It's not long after Eret's released from bedrest the two are causing havic around the village only two brothers could cause.
The first movie is about the same(Hiccup is 15, Eret 19), except Eret actually helps Hiccup down Toothless, but does stay behind when Hiccup sneaks off to go kill his dragon. Eret also smacks his little brother upside the head when Hiccup tells him he let the dragon go.
When Stoick leaves, Eret is given the 'keep your little brother out of trouble talk'.
His relationship with the other teens is about the same; he and Fishlegs are mutual, Snotlout hates him, he trains with Astrid, he finds Tuffnut weird and avoids Ruffnut at all costs. He also grows to see Gobber as mentor/crazy uncle figure.
Eret does meet Toothless before Astrid does. He meets the Night Fury the first time Hiccup puts the first tail prototype.
Yes, he laughs when Hiccup is thrown into the water during the failed flight.
Eret does accompany Hiccup to the hidden cove a few times, but ultimately stays behind to cover for his brother when he disappears, especially when he becomes the pride of the village as the dragon wrangler and moreso when Stoick returns while Hiccup is out with Toothless.
He is there when Astrid finds out about Toothless, having tried to convince Hiccup he doesn't have to flee Berk when Stoick told him he's to kill a dragon. But, he doesn't go with Hiccup when he 'kidnaps' Astrid. He instead stays behind to keep the village from noticing the two missing. Hiccup does tell him about the nest and Queen when he returns.
When is does come to the botched fight with the Monstrous Nightmare, it's Eret who runs in to try and save him while Astrid stays back to ensure the gate stays open but protected from the Nightmare. He's not there when Stoick and Hiccup fight, but he does try to stop Stoick from taking Toothless at the docks and tries to reiterate what Hiccup told him about the nest and Queen, but is brushed off and scolded by his adopted father.
Yeah, he's given the 'you're meant to be the responsible one and protect your brother' speech.
When it comes time for the teens to saddle up to save Toothless, Eret ends up sharing Stormfly with Astrid. Lucky bastard also stays on when Astrid is knocked off.
After Hiccup wakes after loosing his leg, Eret once again smacks the back of his head for being stupid before Astrid kisses Hiccup.
By the end of the first film, Eret decides not to take on a dragon of his own.
When the second film starts(Hiccup 20, Eret 24), Eret still has no dragon and stands with Stoick, Gobber and Spitelout while watching the gang play fly and throw sheep into nets.
Edit: was in the middle of digitalizing the image of Eret and Hiccup as kids when I realized I never brought up the whole 'Stoick retiring' plot.
Hiccup and Eret do get the chance to talk about Hiccup being the next chief and Hiccup suggests Eret be the next chief instead since he's technically the older brother. While Eret is flattered by the confidence and admission, seeing as he and Hiccup used to fight over who was the older brother, Hiccup's side being he'd been apart of Berk longer while Eret would state he was older and taller, he ultimately tells Hiccup that the throne is his honor to inherit.
Not sure if the encounter above would happen in movie as a scene or something Hiccup tells Astrid before he points out the smoke in the distance.
In the scene were Hiccup and Astrid meet Eret son of Eret, they instead meet his father, who looks just like Eret, but older and more tired looking with a beard. Hiccup and Astrid do share a look once they are introduced to Eret I, but say nothing. Hiccup does pull Eret to the side after telling the others about Drago and Stoick tells his backstory, as well as admitting Eret's scar is once of Drago's brands, and tells his brother about the older Eret.
Yeah, man has a whole mental breakdown over the reemergence of Drago and hearing his bio-father is still alive and working for him after he watched his son get branded and thrown to the sea.
Eret doesn't meet his dad until Hiccup goes to 'surrender'. Astrid already left after her boyfriend, so he hitches a ride with Gobber. Eretson and Eret I don't actually talk in this scene, but just kinda stare at each other in disbelief, Eret shocked his dad is actually there while his dad can't believe his long-lost son is still alive.
Eret I doesn't speak up until the group is leaving, in which he stops Eret from returning to Grump and asks how he could have sided with dragons all this time. Stoick for sure tells this man to stay away from both his sons. This leaves Eret feeling betrayed by his bio-dad twice.
Sidenote for giggels: Ruffnut thinks Eret senior is a DILF
Eret ends up going off with Gobber and Stoick to track down Hiccup, so he's there when Stoick and Valka are reunited. Hiccup does introduce Eret to Valka as his older brother and Valka immediately calls this man 'son'.
Que another internal breakdown as Eret hasn't had a maternal figure sence he was a kid!
With the group, Eret I goes through everything Eretson did in the second film; kidnapped and forced to take the group to Drago while becoming Stormfly's personal toy.
He does make a point to leave out the existence of his son when offering the group up to Drago. Astrid does as well when she taunts him about the dragons fo Berk and Hiccup with his Night Fury. Eret I still ends up being put to death with the others and gets saved by Stormfly, which leads to his change of heart and guilt for what he'd said to his son.
When it comes time for Drago's attack on Valk's island, both Eret's end up fighting side-by-side on the ground while the others fight on dragons. Eret I does apologizing during this scene, though Eretson can't quiet respond to the words.
And not just because of the clashing of blades and fist blows.
When Stoick dies, Eret does mourn with Astrid, Hiccup and Valka. He can't bring himself to stop Hiccup from chasing Toothless away and feels guilty for it once Drago takes him.
The rest of the film goes about the same and Eret forgives his father when he's given Skullcrusher, but he does call Eret I 'sir' instead of 'dad' or 'father'. To him, those tiltes go to the man who took him in thirteen years ago.
Eret I is fine with this, he's just glad to have his kid back.
Third film Eret son of Eret is basically the same. He's Hiccup's righthand and continues to help Gobber with blacksmithing. The biggest change is Eret is more involved with dragon rescues and it's Eret I that tells them about Grimmle.
And, that's the long gist of this AU. I do plan on doing art for it(so far all I have is Eret and Hiccup as boys lol), but nothing will be posted until my Wi-Fi is working right and not going in and out(hopefully that happens Monday). Hope you all like this AU dump!

-XOXOX-
Week three has passed and since he had a proper reunion with the dragons, Hiccup does get out of his hut for more than just food or when he’s asked to. He leaves it willingly, daring to step out to go see them. Although it doesn’t happen before he’s taken a good look around to make sure he doesn’t get caught. Not that he won’t still go see them if he is, he just feels so much more awkward about it. Guilty, even.
Like he’s doing something he’s not allowed to.
But today when the Dragon Riders see him out and about, it’s not good and they can recognize what’s going on. The paleness to him, the tired and almost annoyed look, and especially the light dragging of his prosthesis? He’s having a bout of phantom limb pain. Not that his stump ever really stops hurting, but when he has these bouts, it can radiate all the way up to his hip.
He’s helping Toothless scrub his hide in the stables, where all the supplies for dragon hygiene are. It’s the most Dragon Rider thing he’s done in the time he’s been back, probably the most he’s done since his capture now 13 weeks ago. Knowing this, it’s something that does them good to see. This, although he’s doing it at their suggestion.
They told him to come clean his dragon with them, something Astrid did for him in his absence, and his response had been a quiet “of course” with an even quieter “that makes sense” before he followed them to the stables.
But that stump of his? That’s a problem.
Heather quietly places a bucket of water down near him and Hiccup thanks her, there’s some kind of unspoken agreement between them that isn’t there with the other Dragon Riders. Between all three of them, counting along Dagur.
Astrid watches as she scrubs Stormfly’s hide. The Nadder holds her wing up as her Rider absentmindedly goes over the same spot again and again, clearly not paying attention. At some point, it was enjoyable, but that was some time ago. Stormfly cocks her head to the side, getting a look at her with bird-like movements.
It must have something to do with that moment they shared together in front of his hut that one evening after the bonfire days ago. When they hugged and they would not separate until Dagur had to come get her for patrol. And even that took a couple of moments, the eldest brother putting a hand on Hiccup’s shoulder as they shared a couple of words the rest wasn’t privy to either. She’s just helping him, just like that. And all Hiccup does is give her a look.
They were curious to what was said, Ruffnut and Tuffnut tried to fish an answer out of the Berserkers, knowing well enough not to bother Hiccup as he’s still acting very much unlike himself. But neither brother nor sister said a word. All the two got out of the other two is that “he just needed some encouragement” and that was it.
Astrid is not the only one distracted by Hiccup as Fishlegs and Snotlout, the other Riders present while Dagur and the twins are out on patrol, pay more attention to their friend than to their dragons. Meatlug gurbles in worry, wondering why her and the other humans are watching Hiccup so closely. Hookfang appears annoyed as well, blowing smoke at Snotlout when he kicks his bucket for the fifth time in a row. The Nightmare believes that they should pay attention to the task at hand, rather than get distracted by Hiccup and keep him from his.
Limping closer to the bucket, Hiccup drops his sponge down into the bucket to let it soak up water for a moment before bending down and grabbing it again, wringing it damp. He puts absolutely no weight on his pegleg as he does, putting his right palm on his right knee for support.
Heather, having finished with Windshear long ago as she was not distracted, comes over to put a stool nearby and then she makes another trip, returning with a hard brush and a claw-cleaner, which is a round brush on a wooden handle. It’s meant to clean out all the gunk that can gather between a dragon’s claws, which can cause inflammation and other problems if left to fester. Dragons who aren’t bonded with humans who can take care of these kinds of issues for them, have lost claws this way before.
“No, I’m done with those,” Hiccup mutters quietly to her, as if afraid to be heard.
“Are you?” She eyes Toothless with raised eyebrows, who takes a look at himself because of her.
And to that, his human soulmate, already on edge because of his flare up, takes offense.
“Yes, Heather! I go from dry dirt to wet clean, always dry dirt to wet clean! You know this!” He raises his voice, throwing the sponge back into the bucket. Snotlout kicks over his in shock and spills water everywhere while Fishlegs drops his brush. The two of them and Astrid stare at Hiccup.
It was such an outburst of emotion, fueled by his bout of pain, but it’s startling to hear after three weeks of this subdued Hiccup that they just do not know and who keeps them on their toes by simply existing. He seems to have surprised himself as he stands there, frozen in place with his eyes wide.
Like he did something really, really bad just now.
“I’m… I’m going to…” And there the subdued version is, he points towards the entrance. He won’t leave his dragon wet and hanging, but he’ll quietly finish what he came here to do and then disappear into his hut again. Probably to curl up in bed and try to make the pain in his residual limb go away.
His friends and sister watch him and then watch him disappear just as quickly as he arrived.
It’s both relieving as well as devastating to see, a blessing and a curse. Because he’s in there. Their Hiccup Haddock- energetic, brave, outspoken, and snarky- is in there and getting offended in his dragon’s stead is proof of that. But then he retreats quickly, like he did something wrong, and they’re left to wonder about that and the next time they might see him.

I think we can all agree that HTTYD 3 is the most divisive movie in the franchise.
So I'm curious to know your personal opinions on it!
I personally have a love hate relationship with it. There's a lot of things I love while there's a LOT of things I hate.
I love a lot of it. But I'll go ahead and state the problems I had because they are easier to describe compared to the things I loved about it.
-Some aspects involving The Light Fury. She was a plot device more than she was a character and the "behind the scenes" creaton of her was problematic imo. Although it's slightly grown on me, her design is weird and I really want to redesign her lol.
-Some things involving Toothless. I LOVE Toothless, but I have a lot of problems with how he was handled in this movie. For one, he's TOO OVERPOWERED! like really? Not only can he control all dragons, but you gave the ONE ability that made the Light Fury unique and gave it to Toothless 🤦♀️. Although it's a result of the ending of movie 2, I don't like the idea of Toothless being able to control dragons, but this is a personal gripe that I explained in detail before and isn't a fault of the writing in movie 3. This is a nitpick but I don't like how they got rid of Toothless' subtle patterns that have appeared in all instalments (including series) except this movie. This is also a nitpick but I also found it weird that they made Toothless act so much like a dog in this movie when he almost always acted more like a cat in every instalment. Also, his want to leave Hiccup was way to sudden and is not in his character... I could explain a lot more but idc exactly how to put it to words and this post would go on forever lol.
-Kinda a nitpick but I don't like how Astrid was reduced to just moral support. I wish we had more moments of her being badass. Because one thing I always LOVED about Astrid was that she's independent and strong but also allowed to act feminine. As a woman myself, all women are different- Women can act feminine, women can act masculine, and seeing a strong independent woman character that can act masculine but also act feminine is something you rarely really see in mainstream media imo.
-The side characters where done SO DANG DIRTY in this movie... ESPECIALLY if you watched Riders/Defenders of Berk + Race to the Edge. The characters I feel got ruined the most though, where Snotlout and Ruffnut. WHAT HAPPENED TO SNOTLOUT BEING COCKY BUT ALSO HAVING A HEART OF GOLD!? WHAT HAPPENED TO RUFFNUT BEING PURPOSELY STUPID TO CONFUSE HER ENEMIES? WHAT DID THEY DO HHH???
-Grimmel was just a half baked Viggo from Race to the Edge. Nobody can change my mind.
-BIGGEST COMPLAINT. Like EVERY installment, both movie, short film, comic, and series, where built on exploration and discovery. In every part of the franchise, we saw new species and worlds. So when the marketing for HTTYD 3 came out... Naturally I assumed we where going to spend a lot of time IN THE HIDDEN WORLD (in my mind as just Toothless and the Light Fury as they bonded). But no. IT HAS SO LITTLE SCREENTIME spent ACTUALLY IN there! Even VANAHEIM was eventually explored in-depth... HHH Just kinda felt like a let-down to me, you know?
Things I personally loved.
-Toothless has his own motivations and goals completely separate from Hiccup in this movie. I really love this as it separates them as individuals more than it has been done before. Only problem is that I feel they didn't handle it as good as I wish they did.
-The very end of this movie was so beautifully bitter sweet with Hiccup and Astrid and their kids!
-Goes without saying that the animation was phenomenal! And although the soundtrack is not as memorable as the first 2, it's still EXTREMELY good!
-Adored the fact we got to see Fireworm Dragons for a few shots! Always love when a movie sneaks in series content.
-Hiccup and Astrid's relationship is still so wholesome to watch and amazing to see!
-The Stoick flashbacks where great!
-I will not lie, I am blinded by my love of HTTYD to completely disown this movie LOL.

Okay so the httyd thing. I've been so excited to share this idea w/ you you have no idea.
So what I've been thinking, is Hiccup seemed to recover wayyyyyyyyy too fast for someone who's been neglected and ostracized from his entire community most of if not all his life. Like when Stoick comes home from looking for the nest in the first movie, and the villagers are saying things like "congratulations" or "out with the old in with the new" and "good riddance if you ask me" and they're "throwing a party to celebrate" Stoick assumes Hiccup is dead and that Berk is celebrating. Berk hated him that much. So what I'm thinking is, Hiccup has made inventions and stuff, he's been trying to do something that will prove he's one of them, a real Viking, trying to make them like him, and none of it worked. The only thing that made them realize he was worth anything was when he started being himself, but what if Hiccup doesn't see it quite that way. What if he thinks that if they can change their minds that quick to like him, then they might change their minds again if he doesn't stay useful. What if no one apologized to him for how they treated him? Because I don't think anyone did. What if his self esteem is still 6 feet lower than the ground and he's walking around waiting for the other shoe to drop. In Gift of the Night Fury we see he feels guilty for Toothless needing him to fly, and so he makes him a new tail that doesn't need a rider. Toothless doesn't want it, but that's not the point. What if Hiccup gives people the option to leave him, because he still thinks its possible that they will. It probably wouldn't be super obvious if he did, but what if he makes them all (Astrid, Tuff and Ruffnut, Fishlegs, Snotlout, maybe even Gobber and Stoick) inventions and things that make it so they don't have to rely on him so much? Leaning a little into Race to the Edge, what if he gives Fishlegs some books he's always borrowing, just as an example. What if they all think he's just being nice, and he's actually trying to make sure they don't need to have him around? This is probably a bit of a stretch, but it's all to say that Hiccup deserved better, and I want the gang to see that and help this boy dig his very very low self esteem out of the hole they buried it in. (Also I like to think that hiccup did this with Gobber when he was younger, because Gobber being the only one who didn't hate him is my emotional support headcannon)
TLDR: What if the gang realized that Hiccup has no self worth and thinks that if everyone could suddenly like him then they could still suddenly hate him?
This might be out of character, but I think all of Berk hating his guts and calling him a screw-up probably did some nasty damage to Hiccup's self esteem, and I want to see that realized and dealt with, because being hated and then suddenly loved might have been a dream come true, but it also probably made him scared it was a dream, and that he will eventually have to wake up.
(Finally getting around to responding to this - sorry it took awhile, I've had my mind on other things and I really didn't want to give a half-brained response when you put so much work into this.)
Ahhhhh, "social outcast genius equating his self-worth to his usefulness in the eyes of others" trope, my beloved.
I will say, my perception of his relationship with the people of Berk was always a bit more on the "he's a nuisance, but he's still family" side of things than out-right hatred. Like the equivalent of a small-town's troubled youth, they don't like him, but he grew up there and he's the village leader's son, so they still have some sense of ownership of him prior to his making them change their minds. If that makes any sense? ...they're Vikings, though, so it's hard to tell the difference sometimes, lol. But, in fairness - it's been awhile since I've watched the first movie, so I'll concede to the freshest memory here. Anyway, that's beside the point-
I wholeheartedly agree with you on this! Hiccup was definitely owed a town apology, at the very least. I understand why they didn't go into that in the movie - limited time, plus the the Stoic-Hiccup relationship was really the core of the conflict, so they opted to focus on that instead - but I agree it would have been nice to see some closure regarding the people of Berk's attitude and treatment towards him. Or some recognition for how it might have affected him after the first movie's conclusion. Because you're absolutely right, that kind of emotional whiplash can be damaging - especially on a teenager who already has considerably low self-esteem.
This does feel pretty in-character for Hiccup, in my opinion, considering the doubts he has in himself as a leader. He neither wanted nor felt right for that job, even when everybody else was sure of his qualifications. So it'd be easy to see him projecting his own doubts in himself on others and assuming they might see things the same way as him. That's the kind of thing that eventually fades as it's repeatedly proven untrue, but it takes time for that reassurance to grow, and the doubts would definitely be pretty prominent at the start. And him wanting to do what's best for everyone else, having the sense of love and responsibility for his community that he has, it makes sense he wouldn't try to hold on too tightly and would instead provide ample opportunity for people to leave if/when they wanted to. (Just like he did with Toothless.)
I think if anybody was gonna pull him out of that, or help him pull himself out of that, it would be Astrid. She'd immediately know something's up - she's always the one to ground him when he's too inside his own head to see things clearly. And unlike his confidence in himself, her confidence in him has never once wavered, she knows he's more capable than he thinks. Astrid also has a much healthier relationship with the rest of Berk, so if anybody can provide some reassurance on the public opinion front, it would be her.
...
All that to say - I like this idea! Very well thought-out and well-considered, imo. I'm not quite as well-versed on the HTTYD world as some people - while I adore the movies, I never quite reached fixation levels of interest in the franchise, for whatever reason - so I can't add too much to this. But I like it and I appreciate you sharing your concept with me! Thanks! :>
#Slightly unrelated but this is making me realize I have a very specific character preference...and ship preference asdfgjkl#asked and answered#nevergiveyournametothefae#Also - again I seriously apologize for taking so long to respond to this. I hope the delay didn't cause you too much worry#Tumblr messaging can be hecka stressful sometimes lol

The Hidden World Themes
(Rediscovered this on my computer and decided to dust it off and post it here on Tumblr XD)
The intended themes of HTTYD: THW, as far as I can tell, are about maturing, letting go, accepting change and standing on your own. These are all good themes and I agree with them in theory. The problem is the way they were handled. I’m sorry, but if the themes have gotten mixed up with implications about segregation and ‘otherness’, romantic vs platonic relationships being portrayed as a binary or one better than the other, and looking for a quick fix solution to avoid problems rather than face and solve them…then something has gone very wrong. I’m sure many of you may insist that Dean didn’t intend for these implications to be in the movie, but they are there regardless. If anything, the fact that Dean apparently didn’t notice or dismissed these issues with his script makes him more culpable, not less. Furthermore, does a franchise based on the premise ‘Vikings who ride dragons’ really need to be realistic? I’m not expecting a play by play of how history would change, but when you put dragons, or any supernatural element, in the ‘real world’, that changes things by definition. ‘Realism’ means addressing typically ignored consequences, not ‘copying’ reality (I recommend Overly Sarcastic Productions ‘Trope Talk: Realism’ for a more comprehensive exploration). That’s what reality TV is for. As I was saying…
Theme One – Coming of Age Dean wanted HTTYD to be Hiccup’s coming of age story, but he also projects onto Hiccup, and therein lies the biggest problem with the movie (and really the franchise as a whole). It revolves entirely around Hiccup, to the point that the other characters feel like NPCs, and Dean is simply ‘playing’ as Hiccup. Snotlout, the twins and even Fishlegs are all portrayed as being way more immature, irresponsible and ignorant than Hiccup ever was, but their complete lack of development is used for ‘comic relief’ (and I use the phrase very loosely). They don’t actually matter, because this is The Hiccup Show, aka The Dean Show.
What gets me is the fact that the movie seems to equate ‘coming of age’ with “get married”. Right from the start Hiccup is told he should marry Astrid, and then at the end when he sends the dragons away he’s rewarded for this ‘mature’ decision by… marrying Astrid. Something that was going to happen anyway, because of course it was. There was no way the franchise wouldn’t end with a Hiccstrid wedding scene. Let’s give the ‘coming of age’ arc to Snotlout instead, shall we? After all, he’s had development before regarding his dad Spitelout, so we can run with that. Instead of flirting with Valka (eww), we can have him be overly competitive towards Eret, to the point it’s affecting missions. Snotlout blames Eret for leaving Ruffnut behind, and Eret asks what Snotlouts’ problem with him is. To which Snotlout responds that he’s jealous, because Eret is tall, strong, handsome (wait what?), talented… even Spitelout likes him more! So Eret tells Spitelout that if he really said he prefers a complete stranger over his own son, he’s a shit dad, and then he punches Spitelout in the face. Because who among us hasn’t wanted to see Spitelout get punched in the face? Seeing this would give Snotlout the courage to stand up to his dad later in the movie. / Theme Two – With Love Comes Loss Oh boy. I get it; Dean was going for a classic ‘if you love them, let them go’ message and used this flashback scene to foreshadow/parallel it. But Stoick and Hiccup’s situations are completely different! 1) Stoick thought Valka was dead. It’s not like she decided to go and live with dragons, and he respected her decision to do so. They were separated by something outside of his control and he had to come to terms with that. 2) Stoick didn’t expect the other men on Berk to give up their wives because he’d lost his. Now then, who shall we give the ‘with love comes loss’ arc to? How about Valka and Gobber, who are also mourning Stoick. Perhaps they both unintentionally put pressure on Hiccup to be like his dad, trying to vicariously have Stoick with them through his son, if that makes sense. We could replace the flashback with a scene of them worried about Hiccup. One thing leads to another and they realise that they’ve been so focused on wanting Stoick back in some way that they haven’t just mourned and reminisced together. / Theme Three – Embracing Change “Look at you, embracing change. I’m proud of you” – says Astrid, to… I’m sorry, who? Hiccup? As in Hiccup ‘changed the whole of Berk’ Haddock? Hiccup ‘first Viking to ride a dragon’ Haddock? What the fuck? This line is stupid and makes no sense. Actually a lot of Astrid’s lines are stupid and make no sense, but I won’t get into that. The point is, Hiccup is the last person who needs to learn to ‘embrace change’. In fact, let’s just cut this theme entirely. There’s such a thing as having too many themes crammed into one story. / Theme Four – Stand/Fly on Your Own
Now for the theme that even the marketing played up. Hiccup thinks he’s nothing without Toothless, so he needs to let Toothless go. That’s the only way for him to stand on his own… or is it? Yes, in real life circumstances change, friends and even families drift apart, and people should be able to ‘stand on their own’ as independent individuals, absolutely – but we do this all the time without having to cut off ties to those we care about. There are hundreds of people in healthy, balanced relationships who still have friends beyond their significant other. ‘If you love them, let them go’ is a nice sentiment, but to me it applies better to unhealthy, imbalanced relationships i.e.: a parent who can’t deal with their child growing up, or an ex-lover struggling to accept that their partner has moved on.
As a real world example, if someone is dependent on another (often a romantic partner) for self-worth, the solution would not be to have them cut ties with their source of affirmation. It would be better to help them find self-worth within themselves, so they can ‘stand on their own’, without having to rely on another person’s approval or support…but that other person can still be there. So let’s address the Buffalord in the room; Hiccup’s apparent dependency on Toothless. For the sake of argument, we’ll assume he is too reliant on his best friend as a source of self-worth. The issue that needs addressing isn’t his reliance on Toothless, it’s his lack of self-worth without the dragons. Sending the dragons away didn’t need to be the ‘solution’ to this problem. He and Toothless had an equal, healthy partnership, shown through their matched missing limbs, similar personalities, and the way they treat each other.
HTTYD1 gives us a perfectly valid reason for why Hiccup would associate his self-worth with Toothless and the dragons. After all, if it weren’t for training Toothless, he would have stayed an outcast in his own tribe. People tell him “You’re nothing without your dragon”, but these people are usually the villains. As in the ones he has no good reason to listen to. If he believes them on some level, then that means neither he, Stoick, Gobber or Astrid ever addressed the issues that led to his lack of self-esteem and his need for an emotional crutch (which ends up being Astrid). That is the real problem, not his friendship with Toothless. If we want to give Hiccup an arc about ‘standing on his own’, let’s pick up where the second movie left off and have him still be torn between his duties as chief and what he actually wants to do with his life. At the end he understands that he doesn’t need Toothless or the dragons to define himself with, but he wants to keep studying and rescuing the dragons regardless. He chooses his own path rather than trying to follow in his father’s footsteps, thus culminating the arc of individualism/self worth that started in the first movie. I’ve also come up with a parallel negative arc for Grimmel that can tie into this ‘rewrite’, but that can be it’s own post, since this one is long enough as it is. So, how would you guys improve on the themes in THW?

Okay, the last of the character sheets I drew over the last few days, presenting Trader Johann and Gruffnut!
Gruffnut Alvarsson is the older cousin of Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston, about six or so years older than them. He’s related to the twins on their dad’s side of the family, their uncle being his father. Despite the Alvarsson and Thorston clans being considerably sized on Berk, especially once they joined through the twins parents, Gruffnut spends most of his time away from Berk. He left on the first ship he could snag for himself after he graduated Dragon Training, off to seek out ‘new opportunities’ as he liked to call it. Every once in a while he returns to Berk, bringing stories to his younger cousins of all the amazing things he’s seen and all the incredible adventures he’s been on, before leaving again. Tuffnut adores his older cousin, thinking he’s one of the coolest people ever. Ruffnut isn’t nearly as thrilled about Gruffnut, but that’s because she’s overheard the conversations the adults have in the background about their older cousin.
Gruffnut barely passed Dragon Training, failing his first year, and far outshone by Ingrid during his second, but brawn’s had never been something he was particularly good at. Especially when his opponent was a large, angry dragon. Gruffnut relied more on brains, though he was no Einstein in that department either. Gruffnut inherited his own father’s and the twins father’s gambling habits, and also inherited the poor awareness that doesn’t come with knowing a gamble or bet is too big a risk to take. Gruffnut has spent the last handful of years sailing off outside the Archipelago, looking for big money and a high-quality lifestyle, only to gamble away all his savings or lose them paying off a debt he didn’t anticipate going poorly. He then slinks back off to his family, begging for a bed and more money, before sailing away and repeating the process all over again. Gruffnut has learned how to handle himself in a fight with smaller opponents, but learning to handle himself in a fight doesn’t help when the money is all he can see and he gambles away more than he can afford with the wrong people. Gruffnut’s family don’t know how quickly he loses money, returning to Berk something he does sparingly. When he can’t afford to make the trip back to the Archipelago, or doesn’t feel like dealing with his family, Gruffnut turns to bounties or shady work with various dragon trappers or other unsavory company to pay off his debts. This sometimes puts him in more trouble, but Gruffnut only cares about his own personal comfort, and is willing to do almost anything to get it.
Trader Johann is a Trader from the Northern Markets. Most of his business is done there, though he can be found almost anywhere, a sort of nomad even amongst the traveling traders. He is also one of the few traders who dared risk sailing into the Archipelago, amongst its rumors of dragon raids and barbaric tribes. Trader Johann has a reputation amongst every tribe he visits as being reliable and friendly, if only a little air-headed and whimsical. It’s a reputation Johann has spent years crafting amongst the Archipelago and every other tribe anywhere else that he visits, though it’s not all for the generous reasons that Johann lets people think. Johann is from further east, where he works for a big name Dragon Trapper looking to expand territory. Johann oversees his bosses outer operations, disguised as a merchant which allows him to go just about anywhere unquestioned. There is genuine joy in his cover, though Johann hates the facade he puts up and the supplies he carries with him. Johann’s passion project over the last year or so indulges the cargo he would rather carry. Dragons.
Johann has been assigned with helping set up an underground dragon trading route, meant to be separate from the larger and more public auctions that take place on many isolated islands. The end goal is for the routes and their multiple, eventual erected, floating markets to serve as private auctions, leaving the islands as a sort of public and more common auctioning ground for the customers with less grandeur. The hidden markets that will be placed along the underground routes paths will be reserved for only the elite and personally invited, but first they need to be set up. Johann has been helping arrange things, bringing reserved supplies and knowledge on the best sailing routes to hide away their operation, and acting as a messenger for all the various Dragon Trapper organizations that would like to attend or provide cargo for selling. Even the Grimborn brothers have sent cargo to help set up the beginning of the stock to be sold, which is a big deal. Of course, Johann has been tasked with helping as nothing more than a means to an end. The underground dragon trading route will serve a bigger purpose than it was initially meant for, though no one but Johann and his employer needs to know what that is. Unfortunately, and irritatingly, Johann has run into a few unforeseen snags along the way. Shipments have been caught in storms and lost before they made it to their end destination, and some of the dragons that the Grimborns have sent are from the older brothers fighting rings, and are consequentially more aggressive than most dragons. And a handful of pests from the Isle of Berk have taken to riding dragons, and managed to reveal to the tribes of the Archipelago that Johann is a Dragon Trapper.
They’re annoying problems, but none that Johann hasn’t been able to swiftly handle. He’s lost rights to trade with Berk and the Berserkers, who want nothing to do with him, and the Outcasts refuse him as well, though he never traded with them before. It’s frustrating, but the other tribes still accept him, under his swiftly though guise of simply providing supplies to any who were willing to buy, regardless of his personal opinions of them. And the infamous Dragon Riders disappeared from the Archipelago within the year of their appearance, so Johann is certain that he doesn’t have to deal with them any longer and can get back to carrying out his employers plan.
Okay I know what you’re thinking. Actually I don’t, but I’m gonna say it anyway cause I’m weird like that. Why is Gruffnut getting on a character sheet when he shows up like, three times in the show? Surely that means he shows up even more times in my crossover, right?…yeah about that, I literally only have him in one episode right now. Maybe he’ll show up a few other times but right now he’s operating as a one and done character. HOWEVER. I have tweaked his character a lot and he adds some insight into the twins family and its structure. For starters, Gruffnut is not a Thorston. He’s an Alvarsson, which is the twins dad’s former surname. I’m making it so that Thorston is actually their mother’s maiden name, which she kept when she married the twins dad. Gruffnut is their paternal cousin, and not only is he a lot older, he’s also not a copy paste of Tuffnut. I’m pretty sure they did that as a sort of comical bit and also to save money on making another model, but because of how the events of this story work, Gruffnut being identical to Tuffnut doesn’t work, and I also wanted to make him seperate. I decided to play into him being a much older cousin as well because that plays into Tuffnut’s idolization of him; Gruffnut is old enough to go out and explore elsewhere beyond Berk, which means Tuffnut doesn’t see him as often, and being much older plays into the effect of Tuffnut looking up to Gruffnut, since they’re not the same age. Ruffnut still sees through a lot of his crap though, but doesn’t know how to break it to Tuffnut who refuses to listen. Gruffnut being a paternal relative also adds on to what I have planned for their dad, in that the twins don’t have the best relationship with him. They talk about their mom a lot but their dad has never come up so I’m assuming that they don’t have the best relationship with him, and Gruffnut is going to help illustrate those issues.
As for Johann, I’m playing into the twist reveal of him being a dragon trapper, but he gets revealed much earlier. Of course it doesn’t have too much of an effect, for better or for worse later on in the story, but the riders are aware of him from pretty early on. I don’t remember if it’s ever mentioned if Johann was working for someone else or not, but in this story he has an employer, and they’re both playing the waiting game for their plans. I’m doing my best to hint to or set up stuff that happens later in the fic early on, so it doesn’t feel like it came out of left field, and I’m trying to connect a bunch of stuff together, which Johann is going to be really helpful in doing on both accounts. He’s not super a problem in the beginning, because he’s busy with his own stuff, but I’m aiming to have him involved at certain points so he doesn’t just fade into obscurity, and also to hint toward the stuff that he’s working on that I cannot reveal yet as it is meant to be a surprise.
#i think i made johanns head a little thin#but it’s also my second time ever drawing him so :/#id like to add Gruffnut more since I’ve put so much WORK into making a different character out of him while still being Gruffnut#but for now he’s just in the one episode#but he also serves to introduce the plot of the next episode so he’s useful there I guess!#but with characters like the Dark Orca pirates and Devil Daniels#im sure he’ll find an opportunity to pop back in again#Johann is gonna be fun#again. i know i say that about everything. but im SO excited about all the work im putting into this project#httyd/the deep crossover#httyd johann#httyd gruffnut

Your modern AU with Ruffnut being pre-med really reminds me of the Free Scauldy episode!! Also, where do you think Gustauv would fit into this?
AAAH YES!! that's where i got the idea from for her to be pre-med!! also her general love of science & with how hands on it is. plus it's a great way to shock ppl with how much she knows bc they always underestimate her!!!
gustav's mom (mrs. larson) is valka & snotlout's mom's sister!! gustav is hiccup & snotlout's cousin!! he's 12 when they're abt 15 years old so they tend to find him annoying. snotlout enjoys making him do stuff for him & bc gustav craves attention, he looks up to snotlout a lot (like riders of berk)
he rlly wants to help at the sanctuary but the gang feel like 12 is a little young to be around dragons all the time. but gustav does help in his own way!! his class was one of the first ever to have a field trip & get a show abt each of the dragons the gang works with!! it's SO amazing. changes gustav fr fr.
when he's 16 the gang are 18-19, out of high school & off at college once summer is out. snotlout is there full time, so with permission he lets gustav help as a paid intern. gustav has already bonded with fanghook by this point & kinda wants to be the stoker class expert (not on snotlout's watch tho 😤)
gustav is their annoying little brother but i think they'd overall be kinder to him, esp with the added thing of me making him hiccup & snotlout's first cousins. at family events they'll sometimes let him join them in hiccup's basement & try to play video games with them. once he's older it's that, and a lot more deep talks. advice talks.
when hiccup & snotlout go through their lowest points (snotlout after everyone leaves for uni, hiccup after his father's death) u better believe gustav is one of the first ppl there. he finds them annoying too, tbh. but it breaks him seeing them in such states bc he puts them on pedestals when he rlly shouldn't.
gustav is also rlly close with snotlout's little sister, adelaide, who's originally from the books!! i like to bring her into the dreamworks franchise bc i think snotlout deserves a little sister. gustav & adelaide are besties tho. they're sibling like in their behavior & it even extends to snotlout when it comes to gustav.
he'll eventually work at the sanctuary full time, but for what's currently in my head, he's an intern & their annoying little brother they love :)
#httyd#gustav larson#httyd headcanons#httyd modern au#rose answers#lil-dragon-draws#!!!! thank u for sending this!!!! <33 lovely hearing from u!!!!#ur art is so fucking swga#swag#loz tag#dragons off the coast au

Daggers & Daffodils Chap.19
Dagur x Reader
Yay! longer chapter and a faster update! I'm finally getting into a better headspace and am enjoying writing again.
Thanks for reading. Also, for anyone interested in AOT, check out my mafia Erwin Fic.
"Tuffnut! * ACHOOO! *" you scream at the blond as the poor Gronkle you were trying treat's rash was interrupted by Ruff and Tuff's prank, replacing your herbs with weeds that triggered your allergies. It's been three years since the war with the Berserkers and a lot has changed. Snotlout is working at the armory, the twins much to everyone's chagrin have pledged themselves to Loki, Fishlegs is a history teacher now, Astrid has told you she plans to join the Berk guard. The atter being something she has yet to tell Hiccup, which left slightly anxious to see how he would react. You had continued your training under Gothi and finished your studying of human medicine. Beyond that, you were learning and inventing medicine and cures for dragons, as well as documenting dragon behavior with Fishlegs. You had even managed to train Scabbard to be a sort of emotional help assistant, helping to calm both human and dragon patients (and even yourself on rough days).
It seemed like everyone in the group had found their place in the world, all that is, except for Hiccup. You loved your brother, but at the end of the day you had new responsibilities. You could see that he was struggling to keep the group together. In the beginning, once the war had finished, you and the others had explored every corner of the archipelago and found every known dragon to ever exist. Hiccup still believed there were more dragons out there but with no signs for years, everyone just sort of moved on, all but Hiccup that is. You were worried how the only group member that still went looking with him (Astrid) leaving would affect him.
Wiping your nose and eyes you walked home, calling it quits after the twins' stunt left you puffy eyed and pink nosed. Placing your satchel on the table you stretched out the tension built throughout the day. When the sound of the door opening caught your attention, you didn't need to look to know it was your brother. "Hey Hiccup, how was your day?".
"Yeah yeah fine" he said quiet and defeated making you stop your stretching to watch his slightly hunched over form march to his room with Toothless in tow. Silver Tongue let out an almost questioning coo laced with his regular sour attitude. "I'm not sure bud".
"Hiccup, is everything alright?" you ask knocking on his door. "Yeah, just a long day" the tone of his voice made it obvious that it was a lie, but you didn't want to push it. "Ok... Is it ok if Scabbard sleeps with you. She's a bit upset with Silver Tongue right now, I think she could use some space" the room remained quiet until the door cracked open just wide enough for a small dragon to crawl through. On cue, Scabbard scrambled through, ready to put her newfound skills to the test. "Atta girl. Come on Silver Tongue, let's go to bed" you turned only to see that he had left for your room a while ago. "You suck" you sigh.
The next day was made up of finding and sorting all the herbs the twins had replaced and hidden around Berk. "Y/N!" you heard Astrid call for you as you were half inside a barrel trying to reach the bundle of cloves Ruffnut had no doubt hidden there "Yeah?".
"We have an emergency". You pull yourself out and dust your hands on your apron. "What is it. Did the dragons eat something?".
"I need you to promise you're not going to freak out" Astrids request made you uneasy. "Ok?" Astrid took a deep breath and looked you in the eye, "Dagur escaped outcast Island". Your stomach sank as you were hit by a wave of dread. Dagur was free? As in, roaming the archipelago to do whatever he wants?
"Y/N, breathe" you hadn't noticed you were holding your breath until Astrid put her hand on your shoulder. You thought everything was over, that you wouldn't need to think about that man and his stupid face ever again. Scabbard was quick to jump into action, crawling up onto your shoulder and purring while filling your ears with the sounds of strong steady breaths for you to copy. "Are you ok?" Astrid asks hand on your back, to which you nod.
It's been three years since you last saw him, and the last thing you said to him was a panicked "hi". Seriously you couldn't have even bothered to say "Hey Dagur, you're cool and all, and I really like you. But you tried to steal my brother's dragon so I'm going to have to throw you in prison now" granted that wasn't much better, but you could have said literally anything, and it would have been infinitely better. He was probably on his way to get revenge on you and Hiccup along with the rest of Berk.
Wait a minute... NO nonononono! You. do. not. like. Dagur. Astrid pulled you out of your rambling thoughts when she dragged you along to the old academy so Hiccup could brief everyone on the plan. You could feel everyone's eyes on you when you arrived, but you were too in thought to acknowledge it.
"All we got out of Johann before he passed out was this: Dagur escaped from Outcast Island by commandeering his ship. He threw Johan overboard about here" Hiccup said gesturing to a large map.
"So, what you're saying is Dagur could be anywhere by now" Snotlout crossed his arms. "Well, technically, yes".
"Oh" Snotlout smiles "Great great great. SO that just leaves -- I don't know, let me think about this-- THE ENTIRE OCEAN TO SEARCH!" he screams "No thank you".
"Master Hiccup" Johann greets. "Johann, you're awake". "And feeling much better, thank you for asking. More importantly, I have more than a strong suspicion where our nefarious foe may be heading" he says waving his hand over the edge of the map. "Outside the archipelago?" Hiccup asks.
"No! Just inside the fog bank on our outer group of islands". "We've never been out that far".
"When Dagur commandeered my precious ship, he also came into possession of a very important map-- one that leads to a graveyard of ships hidden in that fog bank" Johann says distressed only for Snotlout to interrupt. "Wow! That's the first place I'd go" Snotlout says laced with sarcasm.
"Can I hit him?" you look to Hiccup who put his head in his hand at your anticks.
"If I may be allowed to finish?-", "Johann, last time we allowed you to finish, we ended up on Breakneck Bog. So, no-- no finishing. OW!" Snotlout stopped as your hand swung down hitting him on the back of the head.
"Enough!" Hiccup called, "What's so special about the graveyard and why would he go there?". "Well, you see--" Hiccup put his hand up to cut him off, "The short version please".
Johann's face fell as he did what even Odin would not think possible; Summarize, "It's where I store all my treasures and wars". The groups jaws dropped, and eyes widened at his words. So short, so precise, and to the point. "Wow, concise, to the point. Who knew he had it in him?" Tuffnut gasped.
"Johann, is there anything else?" Hiccup asked. "As a matter of fact, there is one ship you must avoid at all costs. It's called... the Reaper. Riddled with booby traps from stem to stern. Barely made it out with my life the only time I dared venture aboard".
"Ok, Toothless, let's go. Unless of course, any of you can make time out of your busy schedules to capture a dangerous maniac?" It was obvious that the rest of the group was already in, and despite your concerns, you knew you couldn't let them do this alone. "Right then. Saddle up, and we'll head out".
You would be lying if you didn't say the flight over was somewhat fun. Hiccup had you do your old formations and like before Snotlout didn't listen. It was familiar, comfortable even. "So, Y/N" Snotlout began to ask, and you prepared for something stupid. "Are you sure, you're gonna be ok locking up your boyfriend again?" your eyes widened and grip on your saddle tightened. "Woah!" snotlout screamed as you flew Silver Tonge into his side, nearly knocking him off. "Alright alright! I get it, touchy subject" he scoffed.
Astrid and Hiccup shared a concerned look before Hiccup spoke, "Y/N, if this is too much, you don't have to do this. We can handle Dagur". "No. I'm fine".
It was night by the time you reached the fog banks, the water littered with wrecked ships. "I knew it. I knew there was more" Hiccup said. "Some of these ships, I've never seen anything like them before" Astrid chimes in. "Ok, everybody fan out. If you see any trace of Dagur, send a signal".
With a deep breath you wing left, separating from the others. Silver Tongue growled lowly as you swept through the fog, "Easy boy, I know, I don't like this either", maybe you should have brought Scabbard, she would do a much better job at calming him down. At the very least you know Dagur isn't here.
Landing top of a ship you meet the others. "No sign of Dagur" you say as you slide off of your saddle. "Looks like we got here first. What's the plan?".
"We wait". "Wait a minute. For how long? This Fog really gives Meatlug the willies" Fishlegs asks. "He's right, the low visibility is putting Silver Tongue on edge" he hasn't stopped looking around since you got here. And you can only imagine it will get worse when Dagur shows up, seeing as the two didn't leave on the best terms. "They have a point" Astrid says, "We can't wait around here forever". "Well, we can't just leave Johann's treasures here either. Dagur will steal them".
"And use the profits to build a new armada" That wouldn't be good. One Berserker armada was enough for your lifetime. "Not if we steal them first" says Ruff followed by her brother. "That is the dumbest idea I've ever heard. I hereby disown you!".
"Actually, you know what? I sort of like it" Hiccup says. "Welcome back to the family" You could swear you feel a headache coming on from their idiocy.
"Here's the plan: we search the ships, gather up Johann's treasure, and take it back to Berk. But keep your eyes open for Dagur, he could show up at any time" The sounds of loud hissing interrupted Hiccup as giant eels launch themselves onto the Reaper. "Silver Tongue!" but it was too late. The dragons had been spooked off, taking off, all except for Toothless.
As if things could be worse, several eels began to wrap themselves around one side of the ship, causing it to tip vertically. "The eels are pulling the ship down!" Fishlegs yells as you all begin to slide down the deck. "Fishlegs, grab my foot!" Snotlout yells in a rare moment of courage after he gets a grip on the ship. And like a chain each of you grab onto the other's feet, much to Snotlouts pain.
"We're gonna live!" Tuff cheers enthusiastically. Astrid, who is at the end of the chain, however, and gripping onto your feet begins to slip. "Astrid!" you look down to see as she loses hold of you. "Most of us are gonna live!". Hiccup and Toothless dive into the water after her, blasting the eels under water and pulling her out, scaring the eels away and causing the ship to rock back onto its hull.
As you each pulled yourselves up from the ground you clutched your ears at Snotlouts shouting. "Pardon me, does anyone else think that Johann could have warned us about I don't know, THE GIANT SCREAMING EELS?!".
"Snotlout would you relax" Hiccup scolds, "The dragons will be back. In the meantime, we stick with the plan. We find Johann's treasure, quietly". Snotlout frowns and stomps away, each of you splitting up to search a ship.
Once you had found an unoccupied ship you made quick to check the captain's quarters, which yielded no treasure. The hull, however, was a different story. Creeping down the stairs a gently as possible did nothing to silence the loud creak of the boards. "Odin's beard" you said, your jaw practically on the floor. The hull was filled with chests overflowing with weird green ores.
"What are you?" you inspect the ore; it was definitely not from the archipelago. The sound of a creak sounded behind you, someone is here. Quickly you draw your sword and crouch behind one of the larger chests.
"Check down there!" with a grumble, another voice trudged down the stairs. "Nuth'n but more of the green stuff" the oafish voice called to the other. Peaking over the chest you looked the man up and down. Until a small sigil caught your eye, Berserker. The other voice called down, "Well, start loading it up".
"Damn it" no way to sneak out of this one. The Berserker took three steps towards the chest to your immediate left, and you used this to your opportunity. Quickly you pounced on him, covering his mouth so he couldn't scream as locked your legs around his throat. He flailed around for around a minute and a half when he stopped moving. "What's taking so long? Hurry up!", "...".
"Did you hear me? I said, Hurry U-" The Berserker was interrupted by a large brick of green ore hitting him square in the face as you rushed up the stairs. You ran as quickly as you could, trying to use his disoriented state to your advantage but unfortunately, he wasn't the only Berserker on the deck. "Damn it" you were met face to face with five Berserkers two of which had crossbows now pointed at you. Begrudgingly you dropped your sword and kicked it over. leaving your hidden dagger in your boot.
"Sir" one of the Berserkers greeted, looking behind you. Turning your head, above you next to the ships steering stood the source of all of your problems.
Sarcasm spilled from your every pore "Oh well isn't that just perfect".

During whatever breaks they have in their year, Snotlout and Hiccup tend to return home to Berk. Not just to see their friends again, but also because if Hiccup didn’t go home, someone would probably come get him, telling him that his father was making everybody’s lives miserable in the woes of missing his son.
It has happened before.
But Stoick isn’t the person Hiccup is currently seeing. At the moment, he and Snotlout have joined Astrid, Ruffnut, Tuffnut and Fishlegs on one of their many beaches, Berk is an island after all. And as the weather isn’t usually this warm and sunny, they’ve found the perfect excuse for a day at the beach. They’re here and in swimwear.
Astrid is in a bathing suit, Ruffnut in a bikini, Tuffnut and Fishlegs are in shorts and Snotlout is in a speedo. Meanwhile ever the victim of cold and insecurities, Hiccup is in swim shorts and a t-shirt.
Ruffnut is currently trying to bury her brother and Astrid decided to help out. Snotlout was requested as a third pair of hands, but he declined. His attention lies elsewhere.
He’s staring at Hiccup as he sits nearer to the cliffside with Fishlegs, geeking out together about something he can’t quite hear. And he knows Hiccup is geeking out because he’s grinning, his hands are all animated and he can’t stop talking.
Snotlout huffs in agitation. His cousin doesn’t look nearly that happy when it’s just the two of them in their apartment, does he?
There’s laughter and Hiccup lights up like a sunny day. Toothless, resting right behind him, perks up at the sound. He hasn’t left him alone since their reunion, not even to let him use the bathroom. And because he knows it’s temporary until his human has to leave him again, he doesn’t plan on straying even a foot away from his side.
Snotlout must be doing a bad job at hiding his feelings, because Tuffnut notices the way his fingers turn white as he crosses his arms and the angry furrow in his brow deepens.
“Damn, jealous?” He asks, buried up to his neck in sand. Ruffnut and Astrid are a distance away now, washing their hands in the calm waves rolling onto shore.
Snotlout remembers to check himself, forcing his shoulders and face to relax.
He has to remember, nobody knows that their two friends, quite literally related by blood, are in a relationship.
“Pff, who? Me? Of the geeksquad?! No way!” His tone is extra mocking, he makes sure to be loud, then he physically turns his back to Hiccup and Fishlegs.
But he can only bear it for a moment.
The next secondhis boyfriend laughs, he looks over his shoulder and glares once more at the two. Why can’t he make him laugh like that?
Tuffnut wears a strange pout as he watches his friend.
-XOXOX-
As long as they’re on Berk, they’re not together. Or they’re certainly not supposed to be. This rule was made after their first time back at their apartment after a break nearly got them in hot waters. Pretending like they’re both single was meant to make it easier on them to hide the fact that they’re couple.
Even so, they still spend at least the evening together when no other engagements draws them away. When asked why, Hiccup made the excuse that they’ve just gotten used to hanging out together.
Tonight, Snotlout followed Hiccup home and together they sit in his room, watching an action movie the latter pirated. Action movies aren’t necessarily his cup of tea, but they are Snotlout’s and he watches them with him for him.
But it would appear that Snotlout isn’t paying attention. Otherwise, he’d be reacting to those explosions and those stunts with glee, but now there’s just a scowl and silence. It’s disconcerting.
“Snotlout is everything okay?” He asks. “You’ve been quiet all day.”
“What’s with you and Fishlegs?”
His question catches him off guard.
Hiccup takes a moment to place his laptop on his boyfriends lap before rising from his bed and closing the bedroom door. He left it open because his parents aren’t home and he wanted to hear them return.
In their case, it’s more than a mother and father worrying about whether or not their just recently legally adult son is practicing safe sex.
Hiccup turns to face the other and crosses his arms. “You want to tell me what’s going on?”
Snotlout, scowl deepening, looks away from him, his arms once more crossed. His stubbornness lasts for only a moment before he shoots up to his feet.
“I’ll tell you what’s going on! You and Fishlegs were all buddy-buddy today and forgetting all about the rest of us! What was up with that, Mr. Two-timing Bastard!” He shouts and Hiccup is so glad his parents aren’t home at the moment.
“Two-timing… What?! Fishlegs is a friend! With whom I was catching up with! I’m allowed to catch up with our friends, Snotlout. Even in private!” Hiccup raises his voice back at him. He can hardly believe that he would turn on him like this. They’ve all grown up together, Snotlout should know better!
“You were all over him!”
“I was not, I was all over Toothless and you’re not jealous of him, are you?!”
“You were laughing!”
“Yeah, that tends to happen when someone tells me something funny!”
Horrible scratching on the window leading to the balcony outside this room causes both young men to take a look. Through years upon years of claw-related abuse, they see Toothless there and he looks less than pleased to be hearing all this yelling.
Mated pairs in dragonkind have their fights, too. But as someone who was right there as his human and Meatlug’s human caught up on the past couple of months, he knows Snotlout has nothing to worry about. Fishlegs was telling Hiccup about this micr-sized dragon that found her way into his house and how he had to turn everything upside down just to find and release her.
Hiccup moves to slide the glass door open and the Night Fury waltzes in. Hiccup’s house is arguably the biggest on Berk, so his room is the biggest of the six of them. A dragon Toothless’ size fits.
Staring disapprovingly at Snotlout, he makes it very clear that he’s outnumbered in this argument. Hiccup was not courting the other male. And as Fishlegs isn’t just “another male” Snotlout should know better than to assume he’s a rival.
“Psh,” Still, he scoffs and turns away from the two.
Picking his laptop up from his bed, Hiccup allows Toothless the room to climb up and settle before he sits down with his back against the dragon’s side. “Now are you going to come enjoy the movie with me or not?”
After a moment of thinking it over, Snotlout does take his seat again, even if Toothless’ presence forces him to sit right on the edge.
Hiccup hits play again and the loud sound mixing of the fight scene returns. Snotlout has no idea what’s going on in this film.
“Besides… I’m not sucking his dick, am I?” The former mutters, causing the other to tense up. There are probably moreeloquent ways to express “I’m sleeping with you and not him and don’t you dare forget it,” but if he wasn’t so angry, he probably would’ve found it.
Snotlout makes himself relax. It’s a big deal that Hiccup is comfortable enough with him to pursue a sexual relationship and sometimes he forgets that.
He sighs deeply. Being in a secret relationship that’s far different from the familial one they’re supposed to have is difficult enough, the last thing he should probably do is draw attention to them by inventing all sorts of other issues where there are none.
To show that he understands, Snotlout scoots closer and throws an arm around his boyfriend’s shoulder. As Hiccup doesn’t pull away, it would seem his silent apology has been accepted.

“I don’t think Snotlout realizes he can like Ruffnut yet, but Fishlegs definitely likes Ruffnut,” You said confidently, pulling up pond weeds with your hands.
Your trousers were rolled up to your ankles, one side of your skirt tucked into your waistband as your toes dug into the silt close to the shore.
Hiccup was beside you, wading in a similar fashion, although it was a bit difficult to hike up both his pantslegs when one was otherwise occupied with his prosthetic.
The trees were incredibly tall around you, enough to block out all light around the pond. Just a few beams filtered through the topmost leaves, filling the forest floor with a heady yellow glow, mites and other things filtering through them, dancing like fairies to a tune only they knew, lighting up the dark waters.
Behind you was an old, abandoned dock, small and molded and falling apart, and besides that, a bucket which you used to toss aside weeds.
Indeed, you were deep, deep in the forests around Berk, where only mystical and mysterious things ever seemed to happen.
“Really-?” Hiccup asked, voice high as his spirits seemed to be, “There’s a large one to your left.”
He indicated with a nod as you glanced over towards him, once again dipping your arms with your rolled-up sleeves into the water, sifting around until you found what he was motioning towards.
A long, dark-green frond of something which pulled easily from the mix below.
“...Is this what you and Fishlegs were talking about before?” You asked, also noticeably, to yourself, a lot less gloomy. You too had been feeling high of spirits, enough to make you feel as if you had broken your old moping patterns, “The weeds.”
It was a pleasant surprise, when Hiccup had come to you asking for help picking weeds from the water.
You wondered which plant was the subject of his interest or his ire now? What plant had the dragons been interacting with this time, to pull his attention? Was it the Rush, or the Pendula? Maybe another plant, one that ended up being from the forest floor instead?
You felt bad still, for not meeting him by the Great Hall.
You knew he wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them, the same way he thought most skulls looked the same.
“Not really?” Hiccup tried, rubbing his hand down his shirt before ruffling the hair at the back of his own head as he tossed a long bunch of wet weeds back, the water sloshing around his ankles, artificial and otherwise, “Not specifically.”
“Specifically?” You took a moment to stare at him with your eyebrow raised.
“Barf and Belch.”
You hummed casually, though you had your ears perked.
You didn’t care at all to keep track of the Twins’ dragons so this was news to you.
“Belch hasn’t been able to fly straight with his other head in a while. Not always, but they’ve been sneaking off to who-knows-where. In short, we think he’s hallucinating. He had… Something, in his teeth. He was hanging around the water the last time- he was dripping wet. Not salt water. Tuffnut… tested that.”
You winced at the mention, “-So you think whatever it was that caused him to act stupid’s been floating around in one of these ponds.”
“Right,” Hiccup nodded.
“Sounds easy enough,” You nodded in return.
“Yeah, so…” Hiccup tried, half-joking in a way that made the invisible hairs on your back prickle, alert, “I’ve been… Meaning to ask. What’s been going on with you and Snotlout? And the others? I’m pretty sure the Jorgensons are getting ready for the two of you to get married.”
“I’d hope not,” You rolled your eyes at him wearily, beginning the slow slog back to the docks behind you, legs pushing through murky water. You were half afraid it would end up making you sick, “I wouldn’t marry him.”
Really, though, why did he care?
“So… You’re not interested in him?”
“Never,” You scoffed, “Not in a million years.”
You were glad that he wasn’t angry- he didn’t seem it, anyways, not at you for accidentally ditching him… if he remembered anything about your plans at all. You didn’t want to bring it up in case he did and that reminded him of anything, pulling up memories like a sharp tripwire. Some things were better off just left unspoken.
You still felt bad, though.
He finally sat down to pull up his own prosthetic, tugging aside the soggy pants leg just above, stitched to cover his stump like a sock.
“Well, that’s not what everyone else thinks,” He said as he turned away, moving continuously with a certain lilt to his voice that made it sound sort of final.
Tuffnut and Snotlout and Ruffnut usually said the same in a voice that seemed more sing-song, though you were certain Hiccup couldn’t ever hold that sort of tone without it sounding weird, or out of place.
“What are you getting at?” You sniped, stomach dropping, “Are you feeling fine? You’re not mad, are you? About before?”
Hiccup’s shoulder’s seemed to jump, nose wrinkling as he grimaced.
“Yup, great… You left me behind, remember,” Hiccup said sarcastically, drily, “So, you know, I’m feeling so warm and fuzzy and loved. So, how are you, by the way? I never really got an explanation for that.”
You grimaced, resisting the urge to bristle at that, knowing in half that he was just baiting you.
You finished pulling up your boot, stuffing your pants leg into the fur lining, feeling incredulous.
You finally understood what it meant for the others, when they said they were annoyed by Hiccup. His sarcasm didn’t seem so funny when you were on the other end of it.
Now you just felt bitter and annoyed.
Pot-kettle.
Well, if he wanted something to scoff at then he’d get something to scoff at.
“Oh, thank you,” You nodded sarcastically, hand braced against your knee, in an action that was more Astrid-like than you would have preferred it to be, “I’m great.”
Hiccup scoffed again, and you felt another spike of irritation in your chest that you weren’t inclined to smother.
Instead, you yanked on the handle of the bucket, tugging it upwards and nearly wrenching your arm with the force of it, and the weight of the bucket, made heavier by the plants and water inside, and dumped it over his head.
“I-uh, ah-ha!” His voice started normal but hitting a higher nasal as it peaked, the contents of the bucket dumping over his face and pasting his hair to his cheeks, water-darkened and tangled with pond plants.
Hiccup stopped for a second, choking on his spit, looking at you incredulously, astonished and definitely upset.
How things could have gone so sour so fast was lost on you.
You glared at him, “Having fun picking that up all on your own.”
Then you marched off, kicking back through the undergrowth as you made it your mission to get as far away as possible.
“You messed up, dude,” Tuffnut spoke with faux wisdom, with words supposed to trigger something in you like you cared at all what he thought, or agreed that somehow in some way he might have known better.
Twins had a certain air about them. They took themselves more seriously than anything else, a level of self-involvement that made it seem like their words had merit whenever they said things of the soul-searching. Most people put their advice above all others, some even vyed it, not that the Twins would ever help anyone on purpose.
You thought they were just stupid.
You’d long since ceased to be fond of it.
It was obvious he had no idea what he was talking about, and it just made you mad.
You missed when you were miserable, because it made everything else feel duller.
“Yeah, well, how do you think I felt?” You asked, incensed, “After he spent all that time blowing me off to hang out with you guys?”
You shouted frustratedly, a nonsensical thing, as you grabbed at the air.
“It was well something well deserved and if he can’t pull his head out of his- if he can’t pull your helmet horns out of his ass long enough to see it then I don’t need it-! You-! Him. The whole lot of you!” You snarked, feeling incredibly hostile as you marched off for the second time that day.
Hiccup stood, rubbing his chin with his hand, leaning against the wooden side of a hut feeling slightly stressed.
He’d… Overheard your shouting.
You’d seemed fine, but then again, your fine was kind of… not. He thought you’d have found someone else to hang out with.
It hadn’t seemed like that big of a deal at the time. He’d always talked about wanting to be friends with the others, and you’d never said anything against it. You hadn’t. But he got it now. The shoe was on the other… prosthetic.
It was all karma.
He really did mess up, didn’t he?
