"Astarion doesn't do big romantic gestures."
My Durge still trying to get graveyard dirt out of her ass crack after being lovingly pounded into it by Astarion who wanted to share with her this deeply joyful and meaningful reclamation of himself after sharing a vulnerable declaration of his love, at this place he hasn't shown anyone else but her: "Then what the actual fuck was that???"
#people get too hung up on the flowers thing and don't actually appreciate how deeply romantic that bastard mosquito is#he's a very private person and unlearning to perform so he isn't waxing poetic about you all the time#But like the whole “you'll flit back into my heart” bit if durge loses is some of the most romantic dialogue in the entire game#even lae'zel is complaining about your constant pda#And this isn't stealing a trait from Wyll#Astarion and Wyll are both romantic they just are in different ways#they are going to do things that fit their own personalities#wyll is going to take you to a grand ball and treat you like royalty the entire time while dancing the night away#astarion is going to take you to that same ball so you can both scam/pickpocket the nobles and have a risky public quickie in the gardens#bg3#astarion#durge#bg3 astarion#bg3 spoilers#astarion x durge#astarion romance

Fantasy Guide to Royal and Noble Jewellery
Royal and Noble jewellery is a staple of their life, a statement of the who is person is, their rank and their wealth. Jewellery simply isn't a accessory, it's an exercise in showmanship and a way to link to a past.
(Disclaimer: Many stones in pieces often have a bloody past, usually stolen or worked from the earth under the reign of Colonialism. It is best to always take this into account when admiring real world pieces)
Providence
Jewellery like this is usually inherited buy can also be bought or even given as a gift. There is three kinds of jewellery in this instance: private, owned by the crown or owned by the state.
Private jewellery is owned by a single person and worn or lent at their own descretion. Private jewellery can be no less grand than state owned jewellery. This jewellery can be inherited by anybody the owner chooses.
State jewellery is not privately owned, it belongs to the country itself. It is not inherited but used by royal family. If a royal family is deposed, the jewellery remains with the state. Such as the French Crown Jewels.
Owned by the Crown means that it can only pass monarch to monarch, worn only by consorts or the monarch and lent to anybody they choose.
Noble jewellery is not quite the same. Much of it is owned privately but there may be one or two pieces designated as official jewellery for the title such as a specific tiara.
The Rules
Jewellery like this are not just trinkets to be borrowed by anybody. Usually the monarch (or titled noble) or sometimes the spouse, is in charge of designating who can be lent which pieces and for what occasion. Even if you are a super close member of the family, you still have to take what's on offer. Sometimes certain jewellery is worn exclusively by a certain rank say the Queen or the noble themselves and would not be offered to anybody else. For example, you will note that into today's royalty you will see certain royals repeating the same tiaras such as Kate Middleton who has only worn the Cambridge Lover's Knot, the Strathmore Rose Tiara, the Lotus Tiara and once, the Cartier Halo Tiara. These would be the tiaras available to them, which usually number only a handful. Certain pieces are designated by for the monarch/Consort as well, the Vladimir Tiara & the Girls of Britain and Ireland Tiara only graced the head of the Queen in her reign. Other pieces such as earrings or bracelets would also be distributed accordingly, more elaborate and expensive pieces would be worn by the higher ranking members. Certain collections are meant to be passed on, such as the Consort's jewels but many Dowager refused to pass on their jewels such as Empress Dowager Maria Feodorovna after the death of Tsar Alexander III.
Treasure Trove
Now, just because a family has a throne or a grand title doesn't mean they have caches of jewels. Many noble families sold off their pieces to pay death duties, most only have a few pieces left today. As for tiaras most noble families would not have access to large quantities, usually only affording one or two. The Spencers for example own two, the Spencer Tiara and the Spencer Honeysuckle Tiara. This is an inaccurate protrayal in Downton Abbey, as the family have at least 6 but then again Cora is a Dollar Princess so it could be possible to own as many but it never made sense considering just how many times they almost loose the estate and never sell any off. Royal families are not exempt from this either, some families have vast stores of jewels such as the British Royal Family (I wonder where those all came from...) while the Greek Monarchy (discontinued) has only a few pieces. The Romanov collection is of course legendary and we may never know it's full extent.

José Casado del Alisal (Spanish, 1832-1886) The Legend of the Monk King, 1880 Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid
Traditionally known as The Bell of Huesca, this painting depicts one of the most terrifying events in the history of Medieval Spain. Ramiro II of Aragon decapitated all the noblemen who had dared to challenge his royal power, one by one. As he had promised to make a bell that would ring to reaffirm his power, he did so with the heads of the rebel noblemen. For the clapper, he used the head of the Archbishop responsible for the failed conspiracy. This painting shows the exact moment when the monarch shows his work to the rest of the court.

you say machete has to be closeted then why's he always wearing them little heels
Maybe he thinks he's a tiny bit nicer looking in them.
#no in fact he's just a little ahead of the curve let me try to explain#again I'm not a historian I'm just sharing what I've read I might be misremembering stuff so don't quote me on this#high heels became extremely fashionable in the early 1600's probably just a few decades after Machete's time#and they were originally worn by men#because they were inspired by Persian riding boots#if your shoes had heels you'd have easier time keeping your feet in the stirrups (think of cowboy boots)#Europeans saw them thought they looked snazzy and they became wildly popular in noble circles fairly quickly#for some hundred years or so high heels were the epitome of class wealth power and status and they were essentially genderless#remember that concepts of masculinity and femininity are fluid and change over time#things that were seen as manly a few centuries ago may seem downright effeminate to a modern viewer#it's all matter of perspective neither is objectively more correct than the other#they started to separate into men's heels and women's heels around mid 1700's iirc but the changes weren't massive even then#and only truly went out of vogue when the French Revolution hit in 1789#and people all across the continent were suddenly put off by everything that reminded them#of the frivolousness and extravagance of royalty and aristicracy#so in his canon timeline I don't think people are looking at him and going “hmmm that's pretty gay”#because heels hadn't become gendered yet#maybe he likes how they accentuate his already tiny paws and make his legs look even longer than they are#he's interested in fashion or at least likes to dress nicely in high quality garments#he tries very hard to look his best despite never really feeling comfortable in his skin#he was a real shrimp as a kid and even though he eventually grew up to be a beanpole he might still find the extra height appealing#no one's going to look down on him ever again#I admit the way I draw them is a lot more modern than the true historical style at the time but not outrageously so#artistic freedom and all that in the end I'm not aiming for 100% accuracy#modern au Machete has no excuses though he's just a little bit fruity#if the guy feels empowered by wearing little clip cloppers let him#answered#anonymous#Machete

Semantics
“It’s quite simple really,” the usurper says, his face impassive but his eyes burning with a malicious promise of pain as he twirls his dagger between his fingers. “Bend the knee, or die.”
The nobles were corralled like beasts, and now cowered before Usurper on his blood stained throne. One of the oldest nobles, Sir Mourden something or other steps forward, well, more like hobbles forward, his beak nose high in the air.
“We do not bend to bas—” in one swift motion Sir Mourden’s head is severed from his body. His body gasps and stutters forward still, as if it didn’t know its head was missing yet, and crumbles to the ground on the steps of the throne. Screams ring out through the hall as Usurper grins, and catches the head of Sir Mourden that Black Knight threw at him.
“Old fart,” Usurper muttered fondly. He fists a clump of the old man’s hair and lifts his head so the other nobles can see. He either didn’t care or didn’t notice the blood and guts spilling onto his armour, but in any case he smiles and reaches to grab the old man’s chin like a puppet. “Bend the knee or die,” he says again, in a pompous, dry voice like Sir Mourden’s.
Gasps of disgust and rude, albeit true, insults fly his way, but one by one the nobles bend their knee, the ones in front first and working in lines all the way back. Regular as clockwork.
Usurper tosses the head away, ready to stand and say his piece when he notices the one noble that remains standing. His clever, cruel eyes narrow, but a small wicked smile graces his lips as he realises it’s a girl.
“You wish to die?” He asks her, his voice booming through the room. A wave of startled gasps ripple through the crowd, all turning to see the fool that refused to bend their knee.
A man beside the girl yanks at her dress, and tries to get her to submit with the rest of them, but the girl rips her sleeve out of his grip, head held high. She never drops eye contact with Usurper.
Usurper beckons her forward. “Bring her to me.”
“No, wait,” the man beside her begs as soldiers descend through the crowd. “Please! She’s just a girl, your highness, please!”
“Silence, subjects, you will all witness what happens to those who disobey your king.”
The soldiers hand the girl to Black Knight who tosses her in front of the steps to Usurper’s throne. She almost falls, but catches herself and remains standing. Her glare defiant.
“My, my,” Usurper purrs, descending the steps towards the girl. He takes slow deliberate steps, as if he were born a pompous nobleman’s son and walked with the same swagger they did. He kicks Sir Mourden’s body away from the steps, the tiles slick with blood as the body slides. “That look in your eyes could kill if you’re not more careful with it, love.”
“That is the intention.”
Usurper laughs. His hand snaps out and grabs her chin between his gloved fingers, tilting her head up to meet his gaze. Nothing. Not a flinch, or a flicker of doubt. This girl had nerves of steel.
“You dare threaten your King? You realise that is treason, right?”
Her lips curl back. “Tell that to the last one.”
Usurper smirks. There was something off about her, something inherently wrong with her. He just couldn’t quite put his finger on what. Usually, Usurper was a master at reading people, it was why this coup was so simple, but he didn’t know how to read this one, simple girl?
“You wish to die?”
“That was the ultimatum, right?” She hisses, grabbing his wrist and pulling his hand from her chin. “Bend the knee or die. I’d rather die than live amongst traitors, and bend a knee to a foreign Usurper.”
A hush falls over the crowd. Usurper’s eyes flash to Black Knight who has one hand on their great sword just waiting for Usurper to give the word.
“Alright,” he says and steps away. He motions Black Knight forward, and just before they swing their sword, Usurper hooks his foot around the girl’s ankle and she falls just in time for the sword to glide over where her throat should be.
Wide terrified eyes meet Usurper’s grinning ones as the girl tries to push herself up on the blood soaked floor. Her hand slips in the old man’s blood and she falls back with a gasp, adrenaline coursing through her body and leaving her trembling before him.
Usurper dropped to a crouch beside her, tilting his head as he spoke. “You are hereby sentenced to death. Not yet, though. I want to have some fun with you before.”
The girl’s eyes widened impossibly wider. “But— but you said—”
“Kneel or die. I didn’t specify when you’d die.” Before the girl can reply, Usurper stands. “Guards. Take her to the dungeons.”
“No! Wait,” the girl cries as arms encircle hers and yank her to her feet. Black Knight shackles iron cuffs around her wrists and gives the chain to her escorts as they lead her out of the throne room screaming. “KILL ME!” She screams. “KILL ME! Let me go!”
The heavy doors shut and muffle her cries for help. Usurper grins at his new subjects. “A bit of fun is always necessary when governing a kingdom,” he says as he stands, spreading his blood stained hands. “Now where was I before we were rudely interrupted?”

Do you have a fave hesokuri au or skit au and have you kuroba’d them 👀
HI EVAN, THANK YOU SM FOR THE ASK!!! 😊✨
and yes, i do!! a few actually, heh. i've talked a little bit about the youkai & denki mystery aus i have for kuroba before and i really love those, but i think my favorite might actually be their royalty / prince au. which i haven't really talked about before so uh. i hope you don't mind, but i'm gonna use this as a excuse to ramble about it.
i'll put my infodumping under a cut bc it might get long, but here's their designs for the au. 🤭
SO. kuroba comes from a commoner household, but because their grandfather was the royal gardener to the matsuno family and they acted as his apprentice, they've basically lived their entire life on the castle grounds in spite of their status. they've gotten to meet and come to befriend quite a few people of a higher social status than them, the most notable being the 2nd prince of the matsuno royal family, karamatsu.
they first met as children, when karamatsu ran away from his caretakers to hide in the gardens and cry by himself. kuroba had been helping with cleaning up the rose beds that day and stumbled upon him. they've always been the meddling type and can't leave others alone when they're upset so they sat with him and tried to comfort him to the best of their ability, ( even if it was just providing him company and a hand to squeeze while he cried. ) after that, karamatsu became very curious about kuroba and would often visit the gardens in the hopes of spending time with them. the two became very close over time, with him following them around the gardens as they worked and running to them whenever he needed a shoulder to cry on ( which they were always happy to provide. )
they're still very close as adults despite some things changing, like karamatsu adopting a more flashy personality to stand out more amongst his brothers and kuroba taking over their grandfather's role as royal gardener. a lot of the things stayed the same, though.
however, their close friendship starts posing some issues within the royal counsel. one of the princes having such an intimate relationship ( and obvious infatuation ) with a commoner is unsightly in the eyes of the nobility and could make them question the integrity & stability of the crown. so iyami, ( who's a sketchy noble adviser to king matsuzou, ) proposes that karamatsu be engaged to duchess dobusu to help quell the rumors going around about kuroba and him. matsuzou agrees and even though he tries to protest it, kara eventually agrees to go along with it for the sake of his family and kuroba.
when karamatsu tells them the news, kuroba takes it pretty well and congratulates him with a smile... or at least, that's the reaction he gets out of them. in reality, they're fucking devastated because they've been harboring feelings for him for years at that point. they already accepted the fact that they could never be together, but that doesn't make the reality of the situation hurt any less. still, they want to support karamatsu and be happy for them so they're taking the truth about their feelings for him to the grave. ( that's what they planned on doing, at least. )
they slowly drift apart after that ; karamatsu's visits to the gardens become less frequent, kuroba stops personally delivering fresh arrangments to karamatsu's quarters, they barely even greet each other when crossing paths. it doesn't help that iyami got into kuroba's ear, warning them that they should keep their distance from kara to preserve his reputation and not lose their job — which they really can't afford as the main breadwinner for their family. neither of them are happy with how things have changed, but there's not much they can do about it.
as karamatsu and dobusu's engagement party draws closer and kuroba has to help with the decorations, their discontent really bubbles to the surface. one of their noble friends, ( i haven't decided who yet lol, ) finds them crying and tries to comfort them, eventually convincing them to sneak into the party and dance with kara so they at least have one unforgettable memory of him to hold onto. with their help, they manage to do it with their identity hidden behind a mask.
things seem to go off without a hitch ; they'll be able to have to moment with karamatsu all for themself and basically no one will be the wiser. that is until they slip up and speak while dancing with him. they start to leave when he almost says their name, but he stops them and gives them the pine-shaped brooch he was wearing before letting them slip away. to make matters worse, iyami sees this all go down.
the events after that are a lot less plotted out, but i imagine some standard historical fantasy romance webtoon bullshit going down. like karamatsu trying to confront kuroba about that night, but them telling him to stop and leave them be. it's be some wild melodrama, which i do kinda live for.
the climax would probably be iyami staging some villainess-esque condemnation event to expose kuroba for sneaking into the party and get them kicked out of the castle. but queen matsuyo and some of the nobles kuroba had befriended come to their rescue. basically, they argue that if there's someone who's willing to be with karamatsu's annoying ass, then why would you force him onto someone else? none of the other nobles want him, please let kuroba have him so they don't have to deal with him. this includes dobusu, who agrees to give the royal family her duchy's support if they break off her engagement with karamatsu and let kuroba take him off her hands. so after getting matsuzou's approval, they live happily ever after theeeeeee end. there's probably other factors that could play into them getting together at the end, but yeah.
anyways thank you for coming to my rambling, i am so sorry it got this long. this is one of the aus i've thought about A LOT so i ended up having a lot to say. 😭
#TY AGAIN FOR THE ASK!!! sorry i would've replied faster but i wanted to add drawings...#this au also had me thinking about kuroba interacting w/ erina in her villainess au.....#i can imagine kuroba telling erina that talking to her is so easy it's like chatting with another commoner rather than a noble#and she just goes *uncanny mr. incredible face*#there's a few other hesokuri aus i've thought a lot about#like a yakuza wolf au & magic school / magic au#there's also some non-canon aus like a high school sweethearts one that's been rattling around in my head...#all i've been thinking about for the past month has been kuroba & kurokara so uh. i've gotten a lot of ideas.#it's super late when i posting this so i need to head to bed but yEAH#osmt#osomatsu-san oc#yumematsu#karamatsu#mj ocs#oc : kuroba#ship : kurokara#au : royalty#mj draws#asks#mj rambles

Fantasy Guide to Royal and Noble Marriages
Marriage is an important part of the life of both royal and nobles in any setting, either historical fiction or fantasy. Marriages are not only life long commitments but they are business and protection deals by families. These are strategies, not relationships. So how can we write them?
Why make a Marriage?
Marriage is at its heart, the seal on an agreement. Two families may come to an agreement to share resources, connections and support one another. For a noble family, it could be about elevation. For example, if the daughter of an Earl marries a Duke, her siblings can now make higher marriages and her family would be more important thanks to this link. It could even be about money. In the late Victorian - Early Edwardian period, many impoverished English peers married wealthy American women for their fortunes. In exchange, the women became titled aristocrats. Royal marriages are made for more universal perks. A royal marriage can change the political layout of the world, it could isolate a kingdom or be the starting gun or a war or end a years long conflict. For example, Kingdom A might be being threatened by Kingdom B. Kingdom C has a powerful military. Kingdom A might offer up a marriage deal to Kingdom C, with the caveat that C protect A from B. C would obligated to act if A gets attacked by B, since A is now an ally. A marriage cements the deal as it creates family ties, which is seen as a sort of permanent stamp on negotiations. After all, would you screw over family?
Marriages of Choice vs Arranged Marriages
Marriages can either be made on behalf of a royal/noble or made by themselves. An heir might be more restricted in this case whilst a younger children have a little more leeway especially if they are part of a large family.
Marriages are not always arranged. But that doesn't mean there aren't restrictions. Any royal or noble will have a list of certain attributes their spouse must have or certain attributes they cannot have. Marriages of choice have to be approved by parents (and the crown if you are a high ranking noble) and if you are royal, sometimes by the government itself.
Arranged marriages are agreements between two families. They might want each other's protection, support or they might simply want to do business together such as opening trade corridors or lifting embargoes on certain items. Arranged marriages are usually made on behalf of both spouses and they are expected to agree to the match for the sake of their family or country.
Screwing over the Deal
Making a marriage doesn't mean that the deal will last forever. Alliances change and circumstances shift. Whilst everyone may be all friendly during negotiations and for some time after, politics is the aim of the game. Treaties can be broken, war can break out and marriages can become unpopular choices. If a country has welcomed a bride/groom one day and then their country becomes the enemy, the bride/groom could become an enemy as well and face isolation and disrespect from the public - even their new family. However they are expected to be loyal to their new family and country, even over their own family and kingdom. These marriages have no promise of happiness. They are a job, a duty to ensure the family is taken care of and securing their futures.
Timeline of a Royal Marriage between Two Royal Families
Offer: The suggestion is made.
Negotiations: The discussion through ambassadors of what a marriage might entails, what each side is willing to provide or what they demand of the marriage. This can take weeks, months even years before a marriage is agreed.
Betrothal: Marriage is approved, treaty signed and the couple is engaged. Betrothals can last from anything from a few weeks to years
Wedding: If one spouse has to travel to their new home, they will travel to their new home and meet their new court, new family and their spouse. Once they arrive, the wedding will take place in a matter of days.
Married Life
These marriages are public, so it is expected for the couple to at least act civil. If they do not like one another or can't stand the sight of another or they just don't love each other, is irrelevant to society and their expectations. They are expected to attend certain events together, sire children and do their duty. There's no rules saying they must live together, so many lived separate lives. The higher ranking spouse is expected to provide their spouse with an allowance and a staff. For international marriages, spouses are not permitted to hire a large party of their own attendants even if they accompany them to their new country. They may keep one or two for company but a newly minted royal should not be waited on by foreign servants, they are a royal of their new kingdom now.
What makes a "good" marriage?
As mentioned above, marriages and relationships are expected to fall into certain perameters. Any spouse - chosen or assigned - should meet certain standards such as be of appropriate rank, follow societal norms and even sometimes be of the same religion. Marriages to anybody who falls out of these standards can be seen as a devasting move - the marriage of Edward IV is still remarked on as a contributing factor to the end of the Plantagenet dynasty. Making the wrong choice of spouse in society's eyes can lead to gossip, being shunned, being disrespected and even barred from succeeding to your birthright. Unequal marriages or morganatic marriages, can even bar children from succession, disallow the couple from attending events together and deny the spouse the style they ought to be entitled to - the marriage of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is a good example to study. A good marriage is seen as one that adheres to all the expectations of society - even if it is an unhappy one.

La Fantaisie: 01 Juin 1850, 10:30
Madame Tanagra: I suppose I should feel flattered.
Comte de Montavin: ...
Madame Tanagra: Welcoming you to my bed so soon after your vows...seems your time on Petticoat Lane with your new bride proved...lacking.
Comte de Montavin: I could easily find someone else.
Madame Tanagra: You are not the only man waiting to warm my bed, Gaston. Go ahead.
Comte de Montavin: ...
Madame Tanagra: That's what I thought. Now, tell me. What is your new excuse for not bringing your petit monseigneur to my estate?
Comte de Montavin: [Dark Laugh] Not happening, Tanagra.
Madame Tanagra: Is that so?
Comte de Montavin: Oliver has eyes for only one mademoiselle. It is pointless to bring him here..
Madame Tanagra: So he's made his decision.
Comte de Montavin: I'm not at liberty to say.
Madame Tanagra: Even to moi?
Comte de Montavin: [Huffs] Especially to you.
Madame Tanagra: I'm sure with a little persausion...I could make you tell me.
Comte de Montavin: You truly believe so?
Madame Tanagra: Hmm...
Comte de Montavin: I'd like to see you try.

god I really love the noble ones. there is no better dynamic than the knights swearing to themselves never to speak of the wounds they're slowly gathering beneath the armor; the royals forced to choose between two of their closest friends; the head of the King's child pressed against the guillotine; the softness of a peasant's hands brushing the hair of the princess out of her face while she cries. there is such a facade to the ones in the public eye and every crack in that mask is delectable.
