Bruce stared at them quietly, not saying a word as Clark continued to fuss next to him to not make it a big deal and that a deep clean would surely fix everything.

"Oh yeah. I forgot it I guess." you said sheepishly. You yawned deeply before continuing, "So why are you here?".

"I wanna help you to get ready for your date." she grinned.

"My date?" you repeated.

"Yes! With Roy." she replied, nodding her head rapidly. You sat there shocked silent at Kory's revelation.

You and Roy? Date? No, it can't be possible. There was no way. You didn't feel anything for him. You were just friends and nothing else. Well... not even friends.

"I thought we agreed on going to my graduation as friends only?" you questioned narrowing your eyes at Kory.

"We did. But now you need a boyfriend!" Kory exclaimed enthusiastically. You shook your head slightly, unsure of what to think.

"I don't know Kory. I really think-" you started, but were interrupted when your phone rang. You looked at the name displayed on the screen and frowned when you realized it was Jason calling. You couldn't let Kory see his name on your screen. So before she could see it, you picked up the phone.

"Hello?" you answered, keeping an eye on Kory as you talked.

"Hey Y/n, sorry for bothering you. Can we meet up? We should talk." Jason replied, his voice sounding a bit nervous.

"Uh, sure." you answered slowly. What was happening? Was Jason okay? Is this something bad? You could hear rustling on the other end before a response came.

"Great! Uh... See ya!" he said before hanging up the phone. You stared at the phone for a moment before you hung up your own, letting out a long sigh of relief once your phone went dark.

"Y/n? What happened? Is everything okay?" Kory asked worry written all over her face.

"Yeah, I'm fine." you lied, smiling a bit at Kory. She narrowed her eyes suspiciously at you, but decided not to press.

"Okay then. What will you wear?"

"Uh... I don't really know. I mean.... I guess you can pick something out for me?" you answered hesitantly.

"Really?" she squealed.

"I guess." you muttered.

"Okay. Let's start with something simple." she smiled widely. "You're a fashion disaster anyways!" she exclaimed.

"Hey!"

"Cmon! It's gonna be fun!" she insisted grabbing your arm and dragging you over to your closet.

You spent the better part of ten minutes rummaging through your closet looking for something.

"Come on, come on! Pick something already!" Kory urged impatiently. You rolled your eyes.

You finally managed to find something that you liked. After putting the outfit on you stood proudly in front of the mirror, admiring the way it fit around your body perfectly.

"Wow, y/n. You look gorgeous!" Kory squealed again. You blushed slightly.

"Thanks. It looks good on me." you murmured shyly. She smiled brightly before giving you another quick hug.

"Let's go to breakfast first." she suggested.

"I actually have somewhere to be today..." you stated nervously. Kory narrowed her eyes suspiciously at you. You sighed before elaborating. "Um... I promised I would go to breakfast with someone from class." you lied again.

She raised her eyebrows at your answer.

"And who is this person?"

"It's a girl named Karen." you responded quickly, hoping that it would be enough.

"Oh." she mumbled. Her facial expression was unreadable.

"Karen sounds nice." she mumbled.

"Yeah." you agreed hesitantly. "Well, I should probably go to... breakfast. When was I supposed to be on date with Roy exactly?" you asked Kory, desperate to change the subject.

"Right after lunch." she answered.

"Right. I guess I should go then." you mumbled.

You both said your goodbyes and parted ways. You took a shower before text Jason for location. After a few moments he texted you back says he's outside. As soon as you opened the door, you saw him waiting anxiously near the parking lot.

"Hi Y/n." he greeted nervously.

"Hi." you greeted shortly.

"First of all" he started taking a deep breath. "I'm sorry for-"

"Don't worry about it. It doesn't matter." you interrupted. His eyebrows rose.

"It does. It does matter." he argued. "I shouldn't have kissed you."

"It really doesn't matter to me. Don't worry about it." you continued.

He seemed like he wanted to say something more but then stopped himself.

"What's happening?" you asked curiously. He glanced at the ground while rubbing the back of his neck.

"That white haired woman won't bother you anymore." he told you softly. You widened your eyes and stared at him wide eyed.

"What? How do you know?" you inquired worriedly.

"Just trust me. Everything'll be fine now." he assured you.

"But how can you know that? Was she really working with Red-"

"I know because I know. Trust me." he reassured you.

You still couldn't believe what you were hearing. "Why don't you tell me all? Why no one tells me anything and just asks me to trust them?"

"Sorry." he said lowering his gaze. "But it's just complicated."

"Complicated? Explain it to me then." you demanded. His shoulders dropped. He ran his fingers through his hair. This was so frustrating. You could tell he wanted to explain but he also couldn't.

"Fine. But please just hear me out. Everything will make sense soon." he pleaded. You hesitated but then after seeing the hurt look on his face you nodded reluctantly.

"Okay. I'll wait. But I'll hear all after... whenever you start talking." you said crossing your arms across your chest.

"Thank you. And... I won't be here for... a bit." he said.

"Where will you be?"

He averted his gaze. "I've things to do in... China." he said, not meeting your gaze.

"China?" you repeated surprised. "For how long?"

"I don't know." he shrugged. You looked into his eyes, feeling confused. The last thing you expected was that he'd just suddenly disappear.

"But... what about catching Red Hood?" you questioned, not liking the idea of him being away from you for so long. No... not like that. No way. Nope. Not going there.

"We'll catch him. I promise Y/n." he said reassuring you. You pursed your lips together.

"Are you really sure? You don't even know when you'll come back." you said. His expression turned sad for a second until he quickly recovered, plastering a fake smile on his face.

"Y/n, I promise I'll come back. Everything will be okay. Live your life as normal as before." he insisted. You knew he wasn't lying. He truly meant what he was saying. He genuinely cared about you. But somehow you were convinced that he was hiding something from you. You wouldn't forgive him if he was lying. So you decided to drop it for now.

"Okay. You better hurry though." you warned him. "Or Kory'll kill me." you added.

"Why?" he asked puzzled.

"I promised her that I'd go on a date with someone." you revealed. His expression changed completely. A frown formed on his face. You could see him trying hard to hide his feelings, but they were obvious nonetheless.

"Really? With who" he asked, his tone becoming colder than ever. You didn't understand why he had become like that.

"Uhm... it's Roy."

Oh, I didn’t expect anyone to read the tags.

I’m not a stan. I’m a casual fan. This is my only post about Jayroy. That said, I have read a lot of Roy in the past few months—yes, including pre RHATO. So I don’t think a disclaimer is necessary. My point was that Roy is probably happy to have someone like Jason in his life, as they can empathize with one another without fear of judgment. No doubt I worded that poorly, as these were just tags on a shitpost. I didn’t put much thought into what I was saying. It was personal interpretation. But I’ll elaborate a little with canon in mind.

That conversation has to mean something. It was more or less foreshadowed earlier in Titans (2008) #23. This may read as out of character, but in The New Titans (‘80s), Dick once again uses Roy’s addiction—and the times he helped him detox—against him in an argument. And again, in Outsiders (2003). (Not trying to victimize Roy; he hits below the belt too.) These are things that can affect a friendship in the long-term. TLDR: My opinion wasn’t informed by a single conversation.

That is all to say, I think there is always going to be a gap to bridge between someone who has struggled with these traumas first-hand and someone who hasn’t. (“But you’re not out here at the sharp end, not even daring to ask for help, because you’re not even sure what ‘help’ you’d get, even if you did ask.” – Titans #21. It’s not a direct correlation because of timeline nonsense, but Roy has had difficult experiences with rehabilitation in the past, including the Virgil House in Rise of Arsenal (2010.)) Yes, Roy and the Titans are a family who lean on one another and I should have acknowledged that. E.g., at the end of the Titans arc I was referencing, they do resolve that argument to a degree. But it’s complicated. Families are complicated, particularly when it comes to something as intense as drug addiction.

To my mind, Roy still feels like an outsider and a liability at times. Whether it’s out of personal insecurity—feeling like the screw-up of the Teen Titans, something he mentioned a lot in New Earth—or because of resentment over past conflicts. That’s where the trust wavers. Roy was one of the first kid sidekicks to struggle with something as devastating and grounded in reality as a heroin addiction, and he was surrounded by people who didn’t (or couldn’t) understand what he was going through. This is such a close parallel with Jason’s death & resurrection that it’s hard to ignore.

Jason has been the misfit kid sidekick who ‘failed’. He has been afraid to ask for help for fear of what help he will receive. He has struggled with seeing his mother die to a drug addiction. He has felt that his mentor was absent at his time of need. He has felt like an outsider or a liability, even in his own family. They have solidarity, and that can be life-changing for people.

That’s not to say Roy or Jason don’t at all trust the rest of their respective families/friends. They obviously do. It’s not like I’m throwing out every other relationship dating back to the sixties just because I think Jason & Roy have a strong and almost instant sense of empathy for one another, lol. I love the Fab Five, I love the Titans in general. But I think Roy’s relationship with Jason is significant to him too, even if it’s newer, because their traumas are so similar. Relationships can be strong in some ways and weaker in others.

Again, if I worded it poorly, mb. I’m new to the Titans and I assumed I was just throwing thoughts into the void. ^ But this is what I meant. Agree to disagree, etc.

And a heads-up: I’m not gonna respond to this post any further because debates really aren’t my speed. I just wanted to show you where I was coming from, because I think you got the wrong impression about me.

The abridged version of what happened (specifically going over stuff from Red Hood and the Outlaws Vol. 2 #23-36 if anyone wants to read it themselves for the full version) is:

When Willis had been in jail, he'd sent letters to Jason that were never given to him because Faye Gunn (also known as Ma Gunn) withheld them when Jason was living at her school.

One of these letters (the last one) mentioned that he was going to allow himself to undergo experimentation in order to reduce his sentence.

After finally reading these letters now all these years later, Jason went to Willis' grave and dug it up and found that it was empty. Queue many complicated feelings for Jason.

This whole ordeal is why Jason shot Penguin and then got kicked out of Gotham by Bruce in RHATO #25, because it was established it'd been Penguin's fault Willis was arrested in the first place

Also in RHATO #25, two more related things are told to us:

This dude with multiple faces who's been showing up sporadically for the last several issues is apparently Willis after he'd undergone the experimentation

That Faye Gunn is Willis' mother and Jason's grandmother

Fast forward a little bit and Jason's off on his own following a drug-related lead that he and Roy had started investigating during RHATO Annual #2 (just before Roy died during Heroes in Crisis) and he ends up following a trail all the way to the same prison that Willis had been experimented on in! And there he meets this new Wingman, and also brings up his own connection to the identity:

While at the prison, he finds Bunker from the Teen Titans who's been imprisoned there, and also comes face to face with the multiple face guy, known as 'Solitary' and he is right off the bat trying to tell Jason that he is his dad.

We get a bit more of Solitary's story told to Jason via Solitary's powers- how he'd been merged with other inmates during the experimentation- but Jason is not sold on the whole 'I am your father' thing, and proves that this guy isn't by the lack of bat-shaped brand mark on his arm, something he knew his father had.

So this dude? Not actually Willis!

Jason then beats this guy and when he leaves to head back to Gotham, both Miguel and Wingman decide to go with him. We then enter the whole Iceberg Lounge era- Jason takes over Penguin's club and runs it for a hot sec- and now Miguel and Wingman are actually working for him there. But there's still clearly mystery around who Wingman actually is.

More stuff happens that's unrelated to this particular plot thread so I'm not gonna go into it here, but basically all sorts of crap happens with the Iceberg Lounge and Jason decides to pass it off to someone else (Suzie Su) and go on his own way. Wingman and Jason have one last little chat on a boat about Gotham before Jason just uh. Jumps off the boat. And as he swims away, We get the big reveal:

Do we get any further elaboration on him? No. No, we do not. This had been the last time he'd shown up until now suddenly being a part of Batman Inc during Shadow War. So again, at this moment I'm unsure if the Wingman in Shadow War is even supposed to be Willis or if they're just using the alias with the intent of someone else under the mask, who knows. But he is seemingly alive.

I love LOVE the idea of Duke being the one to notice

And yeah I feel like it makes sense that feeling of "i just saw a horrible flash of information but I'm probably missing something that will make it make sense", and Duke isn't shy about mentioning Jason's past trauma but when he asks about that one strangely Jason just locks down and it's impossible to get a straight answer out of him. Duke has a very very bad feeling about it and goes to Cass, Cass asks Jason and he skirts around the answer but she can read in his body language all his shame and yes, yes batman killed him, but Jason won't elaborate. And I can see Cass desperately looking for an answer that will change her evaluation of the situation because she can't believe it but she has no other choice, she and Duke are in this situation where they don't have the luxury of not seeing what they see. And I can see Duke being on a bit of all the ends of the spectrum like "I like Jason he shouldn't have to feel unsafe/Batman is very insistent on his rule of no killing he definitely shouldn't kill/ you shouldn't kill your children wth is up with that" so it would be a kinda spread horror amongst the different axes of that spiderweb diagram, like not the reality shattering thing it is for Cass on one axis but more of a general "all of this is so wrong" way. And of course, Duke and Cass friendship ftw.

As for Roy, I'm gonna be honest, I'm a big Jayroy fan who really hates Lobdell. So I would be very down for an alternative to RHATO where Jason and Roy grow and become close during the evil horrible team-up of doom. So Roy could be a great candidate for "you shouldn't kill your children wth is up with that" esp if (idk how we can tweak the timeline because timelines are hard) this happens before he manages to get Lian back. This is a man who would give everything for one more minute with his little girl and, stumbling upon the investigation, he finds out Batman might have gotten that incredible blessing and wasted it?!!! This Roy barely even remembers Jason but by god this investigation better end up with a good explanation because there's no way he's letting a man who did that lead the JL (and he also has many concerns regarding Dick.)

As for the final member, the one who is used to fathers hurting their children, who doesn't bat an eye at killing, but who really won't let someone killing Jason slide, and who would be really fun to see interact with Cass again, I suggest Rose Wilson.

Which would lead us to the ultimate fucked up mission team where nobody wants to find the answer but they need an impossible answer that would make everything alright, and nobody is listening to the one person who knows for sure how doomed the mission is. And eventually the characters truth comes out and everyone is miserable.

Also with a sentiment of hey maybe it happened but it wasn't Bruce and Jason didn't notice, latching onto that: "please please please be a shapeshifter" - "it's not a shapeshifter" - "wdym it's not, it has to be a shapeshifter"

And I love, i a tragic way, that Jason isn't the main character. This is a Cass story. And because he is a side character in someone else's story, his agency is ignored, he has no choice, the truth will come out whether he wants it to or not because what is his shame in the name of ideals of heroism and truth and justice, everything he attempts to stop it is doomed. In a way he really is the antagonist of the story, the villain stopping the heroes from attaining their goals and it's doomed because the heroes always win.

And Jay is like "you don't understand, I gave him an impossible choice, I made him do it he didn't do it on purpose he didn't have a choice" (easier if it's his fault, if he was in control, if Bruce didn't choose) and on the next panel you see an image of little Cass with the pigtails and blood-soaked hands and she's not even looking at Jason she's telling the little girl "no, there was a choice, and he (you) chose wrong." A very bitter form of self-hatred and desperation where like she truly believed she could be more than the murderer she became and now she doesn't believe in the man who believes in her.

(idk how to include her relationship with Barbara in this, probably something positive, a bittersweet ending.)

If Bruce killed Jason at the ending of UtH, as it is implied, and if Jason knows that he died, he' the one who keeps Bruce's biggest secret, the breaking of the no-kill rule.

And something something secrets make people grow closer, at the same time that an unwanted secret is also like an unwanted invasion of your space. So Jason is caught in this limbo where he's as closest as possible to Bruce for keeping that secret, but no actual closeness is actually there.
