finished gideon the ninth. cytherea can have a little murder as a treat. she was literally dying of cancer for ten thousand years. I know he was right but I found it so fucking funny when palamedes was like "you killed innocent people" like okayyyy who gives a fuck. she was on a mission to kill god with her own two hands and you meddling kids had to go and ruin it all. the reveal that neither ianthe nor corona really gave a single shit about naberius is so fucking funny to me. like usually stories try to redeem obnoxiously smug male characters but tamsyn muir was like I am going to kill this man in the most pitiful way possible. so not only is ianthe an insincere bitch (surprise surprise) but coronabeth is also fake as fuck (we love bimbos!!!) they were like: me and the bestie! then ianthe literally kills and eats him while coronabeth is crying and throwing up because she wants to be inside her sister (which is truly fucking hilarious but also pathetically tragic). this is not a criticism by the way. these women are the best part of the book for me. I was honestly disappointed when cytherea died. her fight with ianthe was so hot especially the part where she was like "if I'm old news then you're fresh meat" (kinda gagged ianthe's cringe ass) and when she pinned ianthe down and chopped her arm off with her bone cleaver. anyways would love to smoke weed with cytherea.

So. How about this season so far

forever thinking about royal’s bad ending. my thing with it is that maruki doesn’t necessarily give anyone what they want most, he gives them what’s most appropriate for them to want within a maruki-approved framework. iirc there’s a really interesting text sequence in the game where he just straight up changes someone’s career because they���re not “good” at it, regardless of whether that’s what they actually want. why struggle at all? ever? right?

and so ultimately i don’t think goro akechi’s greatest wish is necessarily ren. i think it’s a wish for sure, but his greatest wish is his own agency. despite any regrets he has and the fact that shido and yaldabaoth treated him like a pawn, he's generally pretty adamant about owning his choices and their consequences. he doesn't want that erased. and instead, you end up with pleasant boy™ if you take maruki’s deal. maybe maruki (incorrectly) thinks sanding off all of akechi’s rough edges will make him easier for ren to love. but the crux of it is really that maruki has to essentially lobotomize him to preserve the illusion of his perfect reality, because their ideologies are so diametrically opposed that akechi would spend every waking moment fighting back.

this isn’t to undermine ren’s importance to akechi btw — he explicitly acknowledges that he wishes they had met earlier, and there are countless moments throughout their confidant that underscore how much it means to him that they mirror each other so well. he absolutely does want more time with ren, just not under these circumstances.

and that’s also what makes ren’s choice on 2/2 doubly devastating. he knows that either way he loses akechi. and if he takes maruki’s deal, he loses him knowing that his last moments with the real akechi involved the two of them being unforgivably out of sync.

I really hope in season 2 we get some focus on their dynamic because it could be so interesting (and it already is tbh!!)

Machete and Vasco are so pomegranate-and-the-hand-that-slices coded. To me.

Pomegranates are seen as messy, bloody, inconvenient fruits. You slice or tear or bite and in return for your effort you come away underwhelmed, disgusted, and stained too deep to wash. The consumption of a pomegranate is a violent act of defilement, for both the fruit and the eater.

But that is because most do not understand how to open a pomegranate. They have little patience for the precise carving. They see no point in coreing the fruit gently, no reason to be reverent as they pull the quarters apart. When done correctly, opening a pomegranate leaves little mess. Your fingers will still stain, your knife will still slick, but there will be no pool of crimson drowning both you and the fruit.

The seeds are only sweet to those who understand the merit of a light hand and intricate slicing. Why put in so much effort for a food so bitter and clearly armored against consumption? Surely it must not yearn to be eaten.

rereading some of volume two for the analysis post ( i’m not as familiar with it as i’d like to be! ) and just noticed how similar their poses are here. both touching one arm with a singular paw, brows furrowing while their tails curl around them … it’s an active distancing, a defensive physical change. the hurt feelings are very palpable here!!

THE UNPARALLELED HERO OF US ALL

AHHHH THEY DID IT! THEY DID THE THING

THEY’VE COMPLETED THE CYCLE OF SAKURA AND SYAORAN TRYING TO HOLD HANDS. 

I especially like how, for Lava Lamp, it was a big climactic battle with reality falling apart around him and him diving through it all to try grab her (his Sakura. Who is Not!Sakura) just in time. 

But here, Sakura and Syaoran are just quietly existing out of time and have to make the internal choice to keep going. It’s an emotional climax that they otherwise haven’t had the chance to address together until now - them both seeing everything that has happened (both to them and by them), weighing it all and then still choosing each other. And for Syaoran, LETTING himself be chosen by the other. ALLOWING himself to have grace given to him by another, by Sakura, even if he doesn’t think he deserves it. 

Which is also completing the emotional circle they set up in Chapter 1, where Syaoran was reluctant to accept Sakura's feelings because he didn’t think he was worthy of her as royalty. How fun that they brought that back with infinitely higher stakes and he ACCEPTED it this time.
