Hi, you posted about owning a wooden Beach Bear sign, and noted being unsure of its origins. I think that your sign has a slightly higher chance of being authentic because look at what I spotted at Smitty's Super Service!

This is the only picture I have, but the style matches the Beach Bear one you posted. I would consider asking Damon Breland about it to see if he gets around to answering.

HECK YEAH ROLFE TIME!!

For a while after first joining the Rock-afire, Rolfe was actively embarrassed to be working as a children's entertainer. His solo comedy acts had been complete busts, and working at Showbiz was, at the very least, supposed to be a temporary gig to make rent until something bigger and better came along.

As time wore on, he lied to his family and friends, saying that great things were on the way for him, that he was working on something huge but oh, man, NDAs are such an inconvenience, darn, they'd just have to wait and see.

It took him longer than he'd like to admit to take pride in his work at Showbiz, and Billy Bob was a huge part of that.

Hiii just curious how do you make you rock-a-fire sculptures?? They look amazing

Thanks, I'm glad you like them!

They're mostly made of Sculpey oven-bake clay, although to keep the heads light I used tinfoil balls as a base. I use a toothpick to connect the head to the neck, and I use wooden dowels to make the limbs. This all makes them sturdier and more lightweight so they can stand on their own more easily. Additionally, for Looney Bird, I painted an empty container of slime for his barrel. All the paint is acrylic and the blush was added with a red Prismacolor. To seal it all in I used matte varnish, except for the eyes and inner mouth/teeth, which I painted a coat of gloss over.

For Rolfe's and Mitzi's fur, I picked up some cheap faux-fur at a craft store and trimmed it to be the right length. Unfortunately, it was a lot darker than I expected it to be. And I'm sure you can imagine what a mess it made haha

For Rolfe's bowtie and Mitzi's hairbows and pom poms, I used thin ribbon. Mitzi's skirt was made with felt that I painted the pleats on manually, and her hair is just the scalp of a Barbie doll I cut off with an X-Acto knife. Earl's hair and eyebrows are made of cotton balls I dabbed color onto with alcohol markers. Please don't do that it's messy and looks really bad LOL

Looney Bird's feathers were all sourced from a rainbow feather boa I found on clearance at Michael's. It is the worst material I've ever had the displeasure of working with and I will probably have red feathers stuck in my mouth for the rest of my life. His branch is a small plastic plant I cut off from a wreath I just happened to have in my room.

i bought this poster on holiday in amsterdam earlier this year, it’s a promotional poster for the zandvoort gp of 1978, i was undecided between this one and one of the zandvoort gp of 1982 but i picked ‘78, despite preferring ‘82 as a season, because i liked the composition more (and because niki lauda won in ‘77 so he raced with the number 1 in ‘78 which for some reason was compelling enough to me despite him not being on the poster? i spent a good 15 minutes at the market stand selling the posters and my two friends, both non f1 fans, hated me), but i didn’t give much thought to who the pilots on it could be

just now i got curious and i did some googling, and what do i find?? that’s the mclaren, number 7, driven in ‘78 by *james hunt*, who’s one of my favorite pilots of the 70s and classic era so i couldn’t have picked a better poster to hang in my bedroom!!

behind him is john watson’s number 2 brabham but sadly i can’t pick up the number for the third car behind, just that the first number is a 3

it could be a 38, which would make it alberto colombo’s team merzario but the team merzario car was red (it would be cool though because if you’re very big into the ‘76 championship as i am, you’d maybe recognize arturo merzario (whose team this is and whose car is the 37) as the first driver to approach niki lauda’s car after his crash and the one to drag him out of the fire!) but the color looks more like that of the arrows (though not exactly?) making it either riccardo patrese’s 35 or rolf stommelen’s 36

it’s also probable that the artist took a creative liberty and drew a car wrong or with a different number

if you’re big into the ‘78 championship and have a theory on who it is i’d love to hear it!!!

in case anyone else’s curious about what the other rolfe and earl oneshot is about it’s about rolfe becoming a substitute for a class of obnoxious high schoolers and he gets absolutely cooked by every kid because he’s older than all of them and doesn’t understand what “hawk tuah” “skibidi” or “gyatt” means (he only has frank sinatra disco and tax fraud in his brain) even if he proclaims that he’s studied the new cool and hip kids slang and stuff

When Edd and Eddy get together, how do you figure each one around them reacting to this?

(especially Kevin, I'm always had been curious if Kevin secretly shipped them, or if he was just outright homophobic and genuinely mocking of them)

Kevin definitely makes fun of them in the show cause "haha ur gay" is normal homophobic behavior for a 12-year-old like him, considering the time when the show was made, although he'll grow out of that in his teens as he mellows out. Especially cause homophobia towards EddEddy when they come out would put him at odds with pretty much everyone else (and his own burgeoning sexuality if KevRolf is a thing...), especially Nazz and her very supportive reaction. He might limit himself to light-hearted "I knew it" type comments which Eddy would respond to in good fun.

Jimmy would be flamboyantly supportive and that's all we need to say 💅

Sarah I can imagine being slightly annoyed, mostly by any PDA that might ensue (she's right 🤣 ) Especially if we assume at that point Sarah still has her little unresolved crush on Edd to deal with.

Rolf would act neutral I think. If we see him as aroace cause of the Valentines special, he'd have no interest in whatever Edd and Eddy are up to, and perhaps even be annoyed by them (and be a hypocrite if KevRolf eventually happens and he's perfectly fine being lovey-dovey with Kev lol)

If Lee and Marie haven't yet gotten over their Eds, EddEddy happening would kill their interest in short order lmao. If they've gotten over them already, I think they'd would tease them (perhaps May would join in, or just give  Edd and Eddy a big thumbs up 👍😁)

Jonny's a mystery to me... He'd be neutral about it I think? Feel free to add (sorry we neglect you Jonny 😅)

Aces and their pets

Most people know of Moritz, Manfred von Richthofens beloved Great Dane (he was most likely a mutt but MvR swore up and down he was a purebred). After MvRs death Moritz got taken care of by Manfreds old friend Alfred Gerstenberg.

But there are several other pets (primarily dogs) that deserve a mention as well as many of them accompanied their owners to the front.

One of them is Max Immelmanns Great Dane Tyras. Immelmann found him in an animal shelter and his name is technically a pun, as Max named him after the place he got him from (Tierasyl = Tieras = Tyras, which was also the name of Otto von Bismarcks dog). Tyras was very loved, he was regularly sketched by Immelmann and was allowed to sleep on the bed. Tyras most likely stayed with Immelmanns family after his death.

The great Oswald Boelcke also had dogs. Besides horses they were his favourite animals. Shortly before the war broke out he got Ibi, an Airedale Terrier. He left Ibi at home during the war. Missing his loyal companion he got himself a German Shepherd named Wolf.

Rudolf Berthold got gifted a small white terrier by comrades, name unfortunately unknown. But important enough to be included in the Sanke card.

Ernst von Althaus' beloved dog Mousse was with him during the whole war. He seems to be a type of hunting breed. With him in the picture is Otto Bernert with a Jack Russel.

Josef Jacobs also brought his dog Rolf to the front with him.

Heinrich Gontermanns dog also had the honour of being included in the Sanke card.

Richthofens former flight companion Graf Erich von Holck also had a small dog, who he took with them in the airplane during their patrols over Russia. That tough doggy survived the incident where they flew over a burning town and had to do an emergency landing but then got lost on the way back. Holck apparently was also a cat lover. There are several pictures of pilots (from all countries) with lion cubs, so there seemed to be a trend.

Speaking of rather curious choices of animal companions, Ernst Udet and his comrades entertained a monkey named Betty. Unfortunately, I can't find the picture right now (does anyone have it?).

Ernst Udet tells the story of his comrade Wilhelm Klinkermann whose dog always waited right at the flight strip until his owner returned. On the day of his death the dog was very nervous and when Klinkermann didn't return, they had to force the dog into the car to take him to his family. He did not want to leave without his owner.

Cal Lucia plays Fire Emblem Path of Radiance: Chapter 13

Not much of a lead-in for this chapter, huh? I'm just plopped right into my pre-chapter preparations. But then again, since in previous cases that was always accompanied by a change in location, and we're still very much on a boat, I suppose that makes sense. Let's start with Jill!

"Why are you still here?" - Blunt, Ike. Blunt. And calling soldiers stupid, too! Reminds me of that one post that's like "everyone who died for their country is a clown". It does make me wonder why exactly Jill really is still with us, though. The basic interesting is obvious, but where does it come from, and why is it enough?

Conversation with Daniel, about the best means to defend on a ship map. Very subtle, game. And they're playing an in-universe war game? Fire Emblem-ception?

Aimee continues to simp for Ike. The game really does make a running gag out of him not caring for women romantically or sexually, huh?

Sibling interactions between Oscar, Boyd and Rolf!! Those are always fun. Judging by the fact that it was a three star one, I thought that it would actually lead to something, but I haven't noticed anything yet. Do they get their own triangle attack now, or. . .?

Right, time to start the actual chapter. And we get more worldbuilding! Begnion's got an empress, Crimea and Daein used to be part of it, and we seriously gotta wonder why they want to see Elincia in the first place

Hmm, we got a high priestess? The only context in which I've heard of priestesses in the context of PoR/RD is with Micaiah's classes, but I really don't think that she's going to make an actual appearance here yet

Have to wonder about that other character, though. . . her name in the German version is Stella, but I don't think that's gonna be the same in English. And after looking that up, her English name is Astrid. . . okay? Seems to be another instance of the German version carrying over the Japanese name.

Ohoho, defend map! And one with a lot of chests, too. Gimme gimme gimme!

Ah, there's Nasaela. Based on these early vibes, I can already somewhat understand my friend's obsession. I am curious though why the king of an entire nation is out here making deals with rather lowly soldiers for money like this. Is his country not doing well financially speaking?

Ergh, as I'm playing through this map, I'm beginning to realize that I really don't have the turns to actually get all the items with just Sothe. I think I'll need to restart and hand everyone chest keys. . . lovely.

Well, that second attempt went a lot better in general. I got all the enemies on the upper ship, including the boss, by just turn five! Let's see what else is gonna happen on this map.

Ah, so that other character flying near Nasaela is. . . well, a character. Kinda funny to see an old winged man like that. And pfft, he Nasaela doesn't like being called. . . what would it be in English? Hatchling?

Tibarn and Janaff. I would say these two have the look of playable characters to them.

Hold on, Tibarn's a king as well? Do the bird Laguz have multiple kingdoms? So far, I was under the impression that they only got the one. . .

This lot really was just there to show that they're there, huh?

. . .And I left the defend point unguarded on accident. I thought the enemy ravens would make a beeline for the treasure, NOT that point. Guess that's my first game over!

Jesus fucking christ, my luck on this second attempt was terrible. Astrid missed a ~90% to hit twice, Rolf also missed one, I took longer to beat the boss. . . but at least I managed to still turn things around in the end. Still just absolutely stucks about Astrid though, because she did get a lot more kills, and by proxy, exp, the first time around.

Sigrun! I heard the name before, but I don't have any associations. With Sanaki however, there are some half-remembered tidbits there. I think she's related to Micaiah somehow?

Ah. So the high priestess is the empress as well. Then why even make a distinction in introducing her?

"New" makes it seem as if there are more of them, I know about the flashlight collection but I don't think I was aware of a medieval weaponry collection.

hi!! I was rereading your works, and I wanted to ask something. In the third part of the Armistice Series you say: “They chat a while about mutual friends, Neville filling them in on Luna’s latest trip and how Seamus and Dean are doing. A lot of his stories are peppered with mentions of Hannah, as he seems to eat most of his meals at the Leaky these days.”

Was this a foreshadowing for HannahxNeville? I thought Hannah might have been ace but maybe she is not aro? I was just curious and Neville is an excellent character in Changeling-verse. Thank you in advance!!

Ahhhhh, you had to ask me about this. My great regret. So, like. I may have mentioned there having been a plan at one point. Of a fourth armistice. and then a Dudley fic. And then maybe another armistice fic. Well AFTER THAT, there was supposed to be a NEVILLE fic. My darling. This fic. the one I have all of 1000 nonsensical words scribbled about and am pretty sure will never get written.

In general, it's supposed to be a 'Augusta Longbottom dies and Neville inherits the house and tries to deal by spending all his time in the gardens and greenhouses of the old manor while various of his friends move in and out as needed' fic. Neville deciding if being an auror was really for himself or for his Gran. For his parents. And, yes, Hannah, his best friend of nearly a decade, being there to help every step of the way. It's how they both find a roundabout way to the paths and dreams they both thought closed forever to them, and fall in love along the way, even if it doesn't look quite the way they've been told it's supposed to.

Neville speaks to her one last time the evening before, sitting by her enormous bed in a stiff, uncomfortable chair. He isn’t close enough to touch her, but close enough to hear her words, quiet but still laced with steel.

“You’ve made me proud, Neville. Walking in your father’s footsteps, completing his fight. Taking up the work that needs to be done.”

It’s an ending, certainly.

The thing she doesn’t tell him is what’s supposed to come next.

At the wake, Ginny is there, pregnant and impatient while trying not to look like she is, Harry a bit wide-eyed and terrified when he isn’t looking at her with the soppiest grin Neville’s ever seen.

It’s been eight years since Ron and Hermione got married, but Harry and Ginny still haven’t shown any inclination, even as her belly swells. Their friends are smart enough not to say anything about it, even if the press is as stupid as ever.

Ginny reaches out and holds his hand.

“I need to go tell my mum and dad,” Neville says as the guests start to depart. He isn’t sure why he hasn’t gone yet.

“We’ll go with you,” Ginny says, voice fierce in that way that says she will not be argued with.

He doesn’t bother trying.

When Luna returns from her latest expedition a few months later, she moves into one of the spare bedrooms. Rolf—not her boyfriend or husband or anything else, he’s told—visits at times, but rarely for long. Luna seems pleased with the arrangement, like Rolf is someone who understands all of her, takes her just as she is and demanding nothing more.

Neville’s glad.

A few months after that, Ginny’s back to work after giving birth and recovering, and Harry is home with the baby. He comes by a few times a week. Harry claims it’s for his own sanity, but Neville still can’t help but feel like maybe he’s checking in on Neville, whose leave from the Aurors has stretched into its ninth month without any sign of ending. Rosier, at this point, has stopped asking.

It’s kind of weird to see Harry like this, baby bouncing on his lap, just as sure and capable as in a fight.

There’s been things in the papers, of course, Henpecked Potter Stuck Home on Nappy Duty, all about how Ginny has unmanned him. Or how disappointingly unambitious Harry has turned out to be, after showing so much early promise. Wiling his days away at home. As if they hadn’t spent the last decade terrified of him, of what he might try to do.

Morons, the lot of them.

Then again, most people have no idea how much Harry quietly continued to do for all of them behind the scenes, [redacted for spoilers!]

To most people Harry is aimless and dominated by his quite possibly evil wife.

Harry doesn’t seem to care less what people think.

It occurs to Neville that to most people Neville is the one who looks properly focused, but he’s really completely adrift, whereas Harry looks like he is exactly where he wants to be. It’s the same stupid feeling that’s always been there, that the two of them are somehow two sides of the same coin. Warped reflections of the other.

You know it could have been you, Harry once confessed to him during a late night together spent pouring over reports trying to run down a particularly nasty artifact. Just as easily as me.

But that is as inconceivable as ever, that Neville could in any way be anything like Harry.

Neville is in awe as always, that Harry could walk away from the ministry. Just like that. Just decide there is something else he wants, damn prophecies and expectations and gossip all the same.

When he mentions it, Harry just lifts his daughter up to his face, blowing a raspberry on her pudgy cheek. “There’s always more work to be done. And it will still be there when I get back. This little one won’t.” 

Neville can't argue with that, even if he were inclined to.

Spending so much time at the manor, Neville inevitably finds himself in the garden. It’s not neglected, exactly. There are people paid to care for the perfectly manicured rows of shrubs and lawn and flowering perennials. To sweep the paths. Like the one he bounced down the first time he showed any inkling for magic, Great Uncle Archie’s cackle echoing behind him.

He’s never liked the garden, is the thing. Not that he’d ever been brave enough to even think it.

Gran gave him a corner in the large conservatory for his plants, and so long as he kept it contained there, she never said anything about his silly habit. It was enough. Or so he always told himself.   

He’s thought about it, is the thing. Just selling the manor. Moving into a flat somewhere. Just leaving it all behind--the memories, the expectations. But it also feels like he’s been leaving too much behind as it is.

So on the one-year anniversary of Gran’s passing, a year since he tanked his career through cowardly attrition, he speaks out loud to the rigid rows and lifeless paths the truth festering in his heart: “I’ve never liked this garden.”

The next week, he asks the gardeners into the parlor and starts making a new plan.
