"When skill and manners mattered". The great Hauptmann (Captain) Oswald Boelcke, Jastaführer (Squadron leader) of Jasta 2, the finest pilot of WW1, shakes hands with his 20th victim, Captain R E Wilson, 32 Squadron RFC, 2 September 1916. Boelcke was flying his Fokker D.III, (352/16). Boelcke was killed in a friendly collision two months later with a score of 40, the highest scoring ace in Germany at the time

Aces and their pets
Most people know of Moritz, Manfred von Richthofens beloved Great Dane (he was most likely a mutt but MvR swore up and down he was a purebred). After MvRs death Moritz got taken care of by Manfreds old friend Alfred Gerstenberg.
But there are several other pets (primarily dogs) that deserve a mention as well as many of them accompanied their owners to the front.
One of them is Max Immelmanns Great Dane Tyras. Immelmann found him in an animal shelter and his name is technically a pun, as Max named him after the place he got him from (Tierasyl = Tieras = Tyras, which was also the name of Otto von Bismarcks dog). Tyras was very loved, he was regularly sketched by Immelmann and was allowed to sleep on the bed. Tyras most likely stayed with Immelmanns family after his death.
The great Oswald Boelcke also had dogs. Besides horses they were his favourite animals. Shortly before the war broke out he got Ibi, an Airedale Terrier. He left Ibi at home during the war. Missing his loyal companion he got himself a German Shepherd named Wolf.
Rudolf Berthold got gifted a small white terrier by comrades, name unfortunately unknown. But important enough to be included in the Sanke card.
Ernst von Althaus' beloved dog Mousse was with him during the whole war. He seems to be a type of hunting breed. With him in the picture is Otto Bernert with a Jack Russel.
Josef Jacobs also brought his dog Rolf to the front with him.
Heinrich Gontermanns dog also had the honour of being included in the Sanke card.
Richthofens former flight companion Graf Erich von Holck also had a small dog, who he took with them in the airplane during their patrols over Russia. That tough doggy survived the incident where they flew over a burning town and had to do an emergency landing but then got lost on the way back. Holck apparently was also a cat lover. There are several pictures of pilots (from all countries) with lion cubs, so there seemed to be a trend.
Speaking of rather curious choices of animal companions, Ernst Udet and his comrades entertained a monkey named Betty. Unfortunately, I can't find the picture right now (does anyone have it?).
Ernst Udet tells the story of his comrade Wilhelm Klinkermann whose dog always waited right at the flight strip until his owner returned. On the day of his death the dog was very nervous and when Klinkermann didn't return, they had to force the dog into the car to take him to his family. He did not want to leave without his owner.
Walter von Bülow-Bothkamp with his dog Tönnes.
And here some more (I'm not sure if these dogs belong to whom they are pictured with):

1916 10 28 Icarus - Russell Smith
beware: this is a photochopped version of the original, besides correcting red glare, I photochopped the barely visible broken wing tip on Boelcke's Albatros, I don't know if it was a flaw of the photo or it was supposed to be a strip of camouflaged fabric fluttering, but it looked like green snot and it was an eye sore just in the middle of the painting and it ruined it for me. Color filters failed so I airbrushed it over in my clumsy attempts to improve on it. You can view the originals and order prints at the artist site.
Oswald Boelcke is considered the father of the German fighter air force, as well as the "Father of Air Fighting Tactics”. He was the first to formalize rules of air fighting, which he presented as the Dicta Boelcke. His theories on air combat are still relevant and are still used by modern military pilots. Credited with 40 victories, he was respected and revered on both side of the lines and served as a mentor to many early German WWI pilots, including Manfred von Richthofen, who continued to idolize Boelke until his own death in 1918.Boelcke was killed on Oct. 28, 1916 while flying an afternoon sortie - his sixth of the day - with Erwin Böhme and Manfred von Richthofen. While diving to attack a patrol of British DH2s, Boelcke and Böhme momentarily lost sight of each other. Böhme's landing gear brushed Boelcke's upper wing causing pieces of the wing to slowly break away. Boelcke managed to bring the aircraft down in what amounted to a controlled crash, but as his wheels touched the ground the Albatros flipped on its back and Boelcke’s skull was crushed. Oswald Boelcke was only 25 years old

Fun facts about Aces
Manfred von Richthofen did not enjoy riding on Schiffsschaukeln (big ship-shaped swings).
Oswald Boelcke was very eager to improve his French so he can talk to the local maids (had a crush on a 15 year old while he was 24 😶. I'm gonna file this under "times were different".).
Max Immelmann was raised vegetarian and kept to it whenever possible even at the front and also abstained from alkohol but he LOVED cake. Ate a huge pile every day.
Kurt Wolff often wore his lucky sleeping cap while flying.
Erwin Böhme wasn't a fan of Moritz (but was wise enough to keep that from MvR). He also used the formal "Sie" instead of the familiar "Du" with his girlfriend until their official engagement (again times were different").

HAI !!! *waves frantically*
Anygays if ya don't mine, maybe bit more Manfred? More specifically with mystical being reader (harpy or whatever ya wanna write), and of course a few headcanons between them where the reader just despises him.
Both given that historically he was somewhat of an aristocrat (mostly since he got to have fun and hunt game and ride horses in his free time due to his father being a high ranking general) and the reader just sees it as bullshit that depise the fact he crashed the first time he ever flew, Oswald Boelcke still chose to take him in among the handful of personally selected pilots.
And slowly over time they grow to respect each other and manage to tolerate one another, and as even more time passes they grow infatuated with each other (and maybe kiss and makeout on the side as they continuously deny their feelings for each other).
And of course if it's late get plenty of sleep, take ur time writing and don't stress yourself out <3. So if it does end up being rather late, hope you have nice dreams, hope your F/O's lovingly invade your dreams and hope both sides of your pillows are cold 💖
First of all, again thank so much for loving my Manfred Writings💗 Second thank you so for making sure I to take my time and get plenty of rest, I appreciate it so much💗💗💗 I hope you have a wonderful day and hope your pillows are cool tonight!💖👍
Now, on to your request!😁
I can certainly do a headcanon with those elements, it will be fun and I like the dynamic you describe. "Enemies to lovers" genre have always interested me so it will interesting and fun to write!💗
And I'm thankful for the history information you have given me, this will help in writing the headcanon for you so thank you so much!❤️
So rest assured, I write this headcanon for you and when it's ready, I'll tag you!
Thank you @bucketinyourwalls ❤️❤️
