The Saint: To Kill a Saint (5.19, ITC, 1967)
"You're trembling, Le Duc."
"Never!"
"You're as upset as a mother kangaroo who's just had her pouch raided."
"I am not even mildly surprised. There must be over a hundred people in Paris who would like to kill the famous Simon Templar."
#the saint#to kill a saint#1967#leslie charteris#michael winder#robert asher#roger moore#annette andre#peter dyneley#derek bond#francis matthews#robert cawdron#john serret#pamela ann davy#michael bilton#robert gillespie#victor winding#lawrence davidson#valerie leon#maggie wright#nita lorraine#Simon's in Paris and apparently has a hire car; I mention this only bc the Saintmobile has been conspicuous by its absence in most of these#colour eps but also bc this car magically changes colour from white to yellow depending on whether the shots are location or studio work#tbf not so much of an issue considering these eps were being transmitted in black and white in the uk.. this is a pretty solid ep#a twisty mystery about who's trying to frame who and why has someone got it in for Simon (i mean apart from the many obvious reasons)#speaking of which he does threaten to spank poor Annette André but relents once she bursts into tears... yeesh. Cawdron makes his fifth and#final appearance as Le Duc (spelled differently here than in previous eps where it was Leduc or even Luduc) joined for the second time by#Serret as Quercy (although tellingly Cawdron is ahead of him in the credits). yet again Simon is framed using the stick figure motif#also of note is a very risqué gag about Simon found in bed with two women and another in the shower... so risqué in fact the script then#has to go to pains to spell out that no don't worry he didn't have a foursome‚ it was all a trick to fool the cops... sure Simon...

Robert Fraser’s interview with Peter Brown and Steven Gaines, All You Need is Love
Some highlights:
Robert Fraser: Peter Asher was Jane’s brother. I think he brought Paul over to my place. He made me sorry because he saw a sculpture in my apartment and said, “I want that.” It was quite a lot of money for those days, it was like 2,500 quid. Paul never asked the price until he decided to buy something. If he liked it, he wanted it.
Steven Gaines: I guess they didn’t have to think about the price
Robert Fraser: No, but most people, even if they don’t have to think about it, they want to know the price. Paul was very, very open-minded, but he was also more…Well, John was too, but I mean John was sort of very difficult to…He was more difficult to…He was very shy in a way, and it comes out in an aggressive way.
Steven Gaines: It’s an odd decision Paul made to live at his girlfriend’s home with her parents.
Robert Fraser: Paul was a very domestic sort of personality. He liked the idea.
Peter Brown: I didn’t think twice about it, but looking back on it now, it was pretty ahead of its time to move in with your girlfriend’s family.
Robert Fraser: Even now, he’s done exactly what he wants. He’s not really like…He never really lived a rock star’s life.

AA needs to clean house but if I were to get rid of 3 people first, it would be Patience, JJ and Asher. Think about it. Coop as annoying as she is, is Spencer’s best friend. I have my own issues with her but I don’t need Spencer to feel abandoned by another important person in his life, so she has to stay. Layla is boring as hell with this music shit but she’s basically just a love interest now anyway so once Jordan is here, she is as well. Patience has become so unbelievably insufferable that I actually hate seeing her on my screen. She’s depressing. She’s boring. She has no purpose. She brings nothing to the show. She needs to go. JJ also has no purpose. Had they kept him recurring and just brought him in for fun the way they do with Denise and the moms, then it would be fun. But they butchered his character and I have no interest in watching him get peer pressured every week or pretend to take football seriously. He needs to go. Asher is just too far removed from the plot at this point. And I actually don’t mind him and Jaymee. They kinda cute. But he’s boring now. Sorry to say. The downfall of a villain having growth in tv shows sometimes is they become boring. And that has happened to Asher. He can go and come back twice next season so the boys can babysit or something. With the amount of screentime these 3 characters get, imagine if they weren’t here and that time was replaced with actual college stuff or Spencer’s progression as an athlete. In the words of MLK I have a dream!!!!

Thirty years later, love’s young dream has descended into non-stop squabbling…Meanwhile, Clive and Lady Kitty’s son Arnold (Pete Ashmore, The Lovely Bones) faces the same marital fate, as his wife Elizabeth (Olivia Vinall, The Woman in White) threatens to elope with the dashing Teddie Luton (Chirag Benedict Lobo, Life of Pi). Will history come full circle? Or can one generation learn from their parents’ disastrous mistakes?

The Saint: The Scales of Justice (6.10, ITC, 1968)
"If an investigation is necessary - which it is not - it will be done by the police."
"That is the last thing we want."
"Why?"
"The publicity. Mr. Templar can work unofficially and discreetly."
"Since when has Mr. Templar been famous for keeping off the front page?"
#the saint#the scales of justice#1968#leslie charteris#robert holmes#robert asher#roger moore#jean marsh#andrew keir#mark burns#john barron#gillian lind#geoffrey chater#ronald leigh hunt#victor maddern#john boxer#brian badcoe#leon cortez#john crocker#edward harvey#clifford parrish#yes yes i know‚ i got distracted again. im so near the end but my attention keeps wandering to other things.. i mean 108 episodes in‚ can#you really blame me? per the Saint Steps In... documentary (which i haven't watched in full but what little I've seen of it is very very#interesting indeed) this episode was particularly singled out by Charteris in correspondence with the production team as evidence that the#series was losing its way and that the quality was dropping (one wonders if he'd seen The Ant One and what on earth he could have thought#of that...). actually im a little puzzled as to why this one offended him so much; it's a perfectly fine Saint ep‚ nothing special by any#means but completely inoffensive in terms of production‚ plotting‚ casting‚ writing etc etc etc. true the plot‚ in which the various#directors of some vague financial company get bumped off at regular intervals‚ feels closer to The Avengers than it does classic Saint#style‚ but it's nothing outrageously different (see Ant ep). and the cast is excellent‚ with Barron getting to play his usual unbearable#tycoon type and Jean Marsh actually getting to do some good fighting back as the damsel of the week. it's all pretty ok!

“Michael [Cooper] talked Robert Fraser into putting a 45 rpm record-player under the dashboard in his car. They’d be dashing through Hyde Park blasting out Otis Redding or James Brown, heading for Ronnie Scott’s or Jane Asher’s.
Michael would take Robert and me to places where Robert Fraser was afraid to go even though he was a titled person, the son of a lord. He wouldn’t dream of going to Jane Asher’s unannounced, whereas Michael would say, ‘It’s cool, it’s cool’ and sure enough it would be--we’d be welcomed with open arms. It would be about 3 am and he’d bring in his Otis Redding tape or something and it would be OK”--Terry Southern in Blinds & Shutters
