30 with Rita x Verdia for that flash writing thing?

Thx for the prompt! Taking the 'flash' fic writing to heart, I for once wrote sth immediately after getting the prompt and without overthinking it - I might turn this into sth a bit longer some day for ao3, but for now just a ficlet on here (though it did turn longer than a few paragraphs, so like half of it's under the readmore).

Flash fic prompt 30: Take a photograph. It’ll last longer.

Rita walks down the steps to her cave pool in a somber mood.

It is quiet, almost eerily so, with all of the girls out of the house and her cat sitting outside in the sun.

She used to know nothing but the quiet, but lately she has gotten used to the bustle of teenagers spreading chaos and rummaging around in her things...

It isn't the lack of teenage girls in the house, however, that has put Rita in such a mood. In fact, she had expected not to feel too well today, and she didn't want to end up having to explain it to them, so she arranged for everyone to be busy elsewhere.

It's an anniversary today, and not a happy one.

One of death.

And to make it even worse - staring at the date in her calendar, Rita has also noticed that it has been almost a year since she has last seen Veridia.

While that shouldn't have come as a shock, the realisation still pushed the dull ache in her heart to a fierce hurt.

Sighing, Rita stops in front of the water and closes her eyes, breathing deeply as she wonders what she should do today.

Suddenly the water rushes noisily, and Rita subconsciously takes a step back so as not to get wet and turn. She opens her eyes, expecting one of the teens to interrupt her musings, but instead -

"Take a picture, it'll last longer," Veridia's chuckle pulls her out of her shock, and Rita blushes when she notices how much she must have been staring.

"You're - here?"

"I didn't want you to be alone today." Veridia smiles, gently, not jealous of the dead. Only willing to help.

"I - thank you. I'm glad you came."

Perhaps she doesn't need to make any plans on her own to escape the past today.

Summary: Rita’s sick and Veridia looks after her

Two Months ago

"Drink."

Veridia held the cup out. It felt uncomfortably warm in her hand and steam rose from the inside. Nerissa had made the potion with strict instructions that Rita had to drink all of it. "Just in case it hasn't all diffused through. It tastes terrible so best to only have to take it once."

Rita had been lying on her side, facing away from the door with the duvet pulled up over her shoulders prior to the door opening, yet when Veridia had arrived she had sat up.

"I hate that stuff. It tastes like old seaweed."

"You have to drink it," Veridia said, "careful it's hot."

She pressed the warm cup gently into the other woman's hands.

Sighing Rita held the cup in both hands.

"Make sure you drink it all. I'll know if you don't."

Veridia sat down on the edge of the bed and pretended not to hear the foreign mutter that was almost certainly an insult. She looked around the room, noting all the land clutter. Did land people really live like this? With their possessions hidden away in cupboards and boxes with only the chosen few allowed to be placed on shelves?

Her mind's wanderings were halted by Rita reaching down and setting the empty mug on the floor.

"It's all done."

"Good."

Veridia looked at her, noting how her skin was paler than normal, how her eyes were too tired looking.

"How are you feeling?"

"Cold. Dizzy. Tired."

The Mermaid was shaking slightly and had her arms crossed over her chest.

Veridia leaned forward placed her palm on Rita's forehead grimacing at the fever high temperature.

"You're burning up. You'd be better off in the water."

Rita shook her head," no. Too many people coming back and forth."

"You should get some sleep then. Nerissa said it'll have eased off by morning."

"I doubt it, " Rita said, while shifting so she was lying down again, "last time I was sick for three days even with that stuff."

Veridia stood up and gently pulled the covers over the other Mermaid.

"Just sleep, then we'll see in the morning."

She turned to leave but felt a hand grasp her own.

"Can you stay?"

"Of course."

The Present

Veridia often wonder how she ended up on land, watching TV while failing to sleep with legs. Then she remembered. She was in love. She didn't want to be, but she always had been.

And as she felt a hand clasp hers and felt the other Mermaid nestle in closer, a simple sleepy smile was all it took to remind her that maybe love wasn't all that bad.

Fanfic Idea

So, there’s a fan fiction that I love it’s called paranormal paradox on wattpad by XxdeepwatersxX it’s an amazing fic about what if there where more dragons that weren’t peoples that were transformed into them. A chapter in it got me thinking. What if Harry never really died? What if Rita only thinks he died. What if to Rita’s knowledge Harry died by an accident like he drowned or something, but really he was turned into a water dragon by a mermaid? What if it was Veridia, jealous of Harry because she loves Rita? Kind of the how Mimmi was jealous of Erik when he was dating Ondina (because we all know Mimmi and Ondina are in love. Do not fight me on this because I will win) Or maybe Aurora who has somekind of connection to Rita that idea comes from a theory that was written into a fic called the story of aurora by mako_tails_and_stuff on ao3, about Rita being aurora? What if Rita and aurora are sisters and Rita doesn’t know? What if they were separated when they were little and Rita forgot about Aurora? What if Aurora was trying to be a protective older sister by getting rid of Harry but instead hurt Rita? What if after season 4 ended Harry in water dragon form goes to mako after discovering that the gang managed to free nerissa in hope to also be freed and reunite with Rita? And then after they manage to do so Aurora comes out of hiding when she figures out that the gang undid her spell on Nerissa, where she discovers the spell she put on Harry is also undone. Then Rita discovers that Aurora is her sister or that Veridia was the one who cast the spell on Harry and maybe is working with aurora?? But wait hears another plot twist, when the spell on Harry is undone he finds out that Rita is dating someone. I don’t know I’m to into this idea maybe I should right my own fic about this. (Also I wrote this at like 10 last night and am literally posting this on my way to school sooo). Also thanks Silver Mermaids for the Idea of a one shot I’ll be sure to use it.

Something Worth Waking Up For

There had been a time in her life, quite a long stretch of time in fact, where everything had felt really and truly worthless. Every morning came, like the one before - suitably blocked out with the curtains and with Rita barely able to open her eyes and face the day.

After Harry’s death nothing held any sort of meaning. There were more days that she cared to admit where she never even got out of her bed. That was partly the reason behind getting Poseidon. The cat had been nothing more than a bundle of fluff when she got him, completely incapable of looking after himself, giving her a purpose to start getting everything back to as close to normal as possible. Harry had been such a large part of her life on land, his loss left a huge absence in every aspect.

Nowadays thought, it was a completely different story. When she woke up every morning, whether on land or in the water, with Veridia. Veridia liked to make a point of teasing her for being ‘affectionate’ and enjoyed going on about how she woke up with Rita clinging to her or lying on top of her. Not that it wasn’t exactly true. There were some times when Rita woke up first she would deliberately do it, just to keep Veridia there for longer. After all it was nice having something that was worth waking up for.

Lines in The Sand

“I still don’t get the appeal,” Veridia announced breaking the comfortable quiet between her and Rita. The beach on the far side of Mako was never visited by land people or any other Mermaids for that matter and had fast become a favourite spot to meet on land. The land part was something Veridia was still getting to grips with. It felt so unnatural being on land and looking out to the Sea, instead of the other way around.

“I know,” Rita hardly took notice of her words, she was tracing the tip of a stick in the sand drawing lines then every so often crossing one out.

“Legs just feel …. Weird.”

“They do, don’t they.”

Veridia pouted slightly, Rita paying more attention to the sand than to her wasn’t something she liked. She shifted closer to Rita, turning the already small gap into a non-existent one, and wrapped her arms around Rita from behind. Rita leaned back against her and let out a soft squeak of surprise as Veridia leaned in and placed a kiss on her neck.

“What are you even doing?” Veridia asked, resting her chin on Rita’s shoulder. One thing was to be said for being on land, at least they didn’t have to worry about trying to keep upright in the water.

“Land people call it drawing. See, it’s Mako.”

Veridia looked over the lines in the sand, sure enough now that her mind was in tune, she could see the shape of Mako and the waves drawn into the beach.

“Do you want to try?”

“Not really, I can think of a few things I’d rather do than make a bunch of lines in the sand.”

She pressed another kiss on Rita’s neck.

“Hey!”

Rita twisted around and caught Veridia’s lips in a kiss of her own.

Sometimes, when I look at Nixie and Rita together.....I begin to think they are mother and daughter. Like, if it HAD to happen, of course it would be the topic of why Rita left her kid behind in the pod to love a human (which would be a myriad of reasons), but then my stupid self made an AU: In another life: What if Nixie WAS Rita and Harry's daughter, but out of grief from his death, Rita gave Nixie to the pod, specifically to Veridia? Angst aside, the plot would be interesting!

They really do look quite similar. I remember reading a fic on fanfiction.net quite a while (as in a few years) ago now that had that headcannon but it wasn’t any sort of main focus in the story. 

It would be a really interesting plot, both of those. I really don’t need another WIP but I am getting Ideas XD

This settles after the end of Mako mermaids season 3 or on netflix season 4. Rita went back to the pod, but also kept her life on land. She just could not leave them all behind, she loved to teach, but also loved someone else. Yet she never told anyone about the feelings she had for Veridia. While Veridia pretty much kept her feelings for herself too. Rita dragged Veridia a couple times with her on land, well she had been there but not outside of the grotto Rita lived in. Although she spent ninety percent of their time together, they don’t seem to get that they like each other. Luckily Rita wasn’t the principal of the school anymore, so that was one thing less to worry about. Instead she remained a spanish teacher for second and third grade students. Both Rita and Veridia hoped the other one would confess their feelings for the other.

"You must have complete control of the ring, or there's no telling what damage it could cause."

I started writing a Valentine’s fic at the start of the month and completely forgot about it so here is it in all it’s unedited, unfinished glory. 

Mostly Rita/Veridia but with mention of Sirena/David, Mimmi/Chris, Ondina/Weilan and Mimmi/Ondina pining

Valentine’s Day. It was never her favourite day. Many of the students were too distracted to pay attention in any classes, with many sneaking chocolates or biscuits in class, despite the clear cut rules of no food in classes. Of course that wasn’t her concern anymore, what with no longer being involved with the school.

Harry had been the one who first introduced to the land concept of Valentine’s Day.

Veridia was still there when she woke up so Rita wrapped her arms around her, hooked her leg over Veridia’s and pulled her in closer. Effectively trapping Veridia against her. She was warm and soft and that was reason enough to want to keep Veridia close. The fact that they were married and Veridia was her wife was irrelevant. 

If it was up to her the day would be spent with a long lie in bed, late breakfast, maybe a nice swim in the afternoon and then dinner. A special dinner she’d already planned out over a month ago. 

It was highly unlikely to happen, Veridia most likely had some form of council meeting or another and she’d be left listening to Sirena’s plans for her and David and Ondina being jealous over Chris. Two years Mimmi had been with Chris and Ondina was still pining after her. Ondina had been happy enough out in Shanghai but whatever happened between her and Weilan sent Ondina speeding back down to Mako.

All the femslash ships and rarepairs I love and that only have 2-3 digit numbers in fics, if even that... I'm really into Star Trek's Milippa Prime atm (225 fics on ao3, read it all in like a week), and from TOG Andromaquynh (which while mentioned in almost 1k fics, otp:true reduces to under 300, sad that the main femslash pairing of the fandom is so small, and even sadder that otp:true is so necessary to navigate the tag because the idiot main mlm fanbase of TOG don't know how to tag their shit right or don't have the Basic decency or kindness to care to do it right), then Rita/Veridia (11 fics on ao3) from Mako Mermaids, a true pool noodle of a ship, I think @mako-and-tails-and-stuff you are running that tag mostly on your own and I love you for every single fic you write for them <3<3<3 (saw your ask btw, I'll answer it soon-ish :D thx <3), Megan/Kate from Body of Proof (18 fics), Ella/Christina from a German show, a tag I'm running alone with an abandoned-ish series of 4 fics, probably more but those are my current ship heartaches!

Also because I'm poly and Very into ot3 dynamics I wish there would be more of those fics out there... I know I also write less for them, mostly because I tend to get into writing sth via fics and fanon and not the actual canon, meaning if the otp's in my face more often I'll write for it first and take a while to warm up to the ot3 even if I'll like it more in the end! Still or maybe especially because of that wish there was more of those around... eg TOG Andronilynh (20 fics on ao3 5 of which are mine lol), Debbie/Lou/Tammy from Ocean's 8 (27 fics on ao3), Geralt/Yennefer/Jaskier from the Witcher (646 but for comparison Geraskier has over 13k)

I honestly don't know XD

I think it's because I always found it easier to write Rita as a character than some of the others and it just kind went on from there.

I used to always struggle writing any kind of romantic stuff, turns out I was just gay and couldn't write m/f relationships XD (I am getting better though, I can't promise anything but I will try and write some Zyla for you 😊 )

Also because the main fic I'm working on right (The Day That Went Askew) has Rita X Veridia in it, kind of keep getting ideas 😂

I had a scene written out from ages ago that I finally have a use for (the latest chapter of The Day That Went Askew) but I can’t find it on google docs anywhere. 

It might be on my tablet though. I hope it’s on my tablet.

First things, I am so glad you liked my fic!! I love all those reaction emoji gif things (I don't know what they're called XD )

Rita speaking Spanish is just something I've headcannoned, inspired from a fanfic I'm currently writing. Also Rita seems like the kind of person who would probably learn a language for fun XD

The sleeping in the bed instead of the pool (which I probably should've mentioned in the fic) is basically because they're hiding their relationship from the others and sleeping in the pool brings a chance one of the Mermaids seeing them together.

Another headcannon is that the house rules Rita set out for the girls includes not going into her room. Which means no chance of anyone seeing them together.

Veridia probably as her own cave/placd out at Mako but that's not a good idea when Rita has work in the morning.

I will admit, I basically had a fangirl moment when I saw all your comments, so thank you!!

Late Nights (Mako Mermaids Fanfiction)

The pile of papers seemed never ending. No matter how many she read over and marked, the pile just seemed to stay the same.

It was boring. Monotonous even. Just the same few points muddled together, again and again, often half formed and completely lacking in sense and grammar.

Occasionally one was far better than the rest but it reminded her exactly why she hated being an English teacher. The excessive essay marking, it always took so long and ate into the hours. It didn’t help that her written English wasn’t always the greatest.

“What are you doing?”

Rita looked up. Veridia was standing in the doorway, wearing the aqua dress and her long hair loose and curly.

Rita set her pen down onto the quite frankly appalling essay, easily the worst she’d ever had to mark. The brief action gave her a second to try to hide how big her smile was. Seeing Veridia was always the best part of her day.
