The 10-Minute Avocado Ripening Hack Tested: My Thoughts & Experience

Apparently, there’s this food hack for avocados that’s going around. The food hack is that you can ripen avocados in 10 minutes. When I first saw this, I was a little hesitant about it and wasn’t sure if it would actually work. I decided to just go get an avocado & try it out to see for myself.

The method for this hack is pretty easy. All you have to is tightly wrap your avocado in foil and bake it for 10 minutes in a 200 degrees Fahrenheit oven or a 93 degrees Celsius oven (for my international Vegaholics). 

I went out to my local grocery store and picked up an avocado. Then, I set my oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit and wrapped my test avocado tightly in the foil to put it inside of the oven. I set the timer on my phone for 10 minutes and just played the waiting game.

When the timer went off, I removed A-dawg (yes I have a nickname for my avocado) from the oven and the foil felt a little warm. When I opened the foil, the avocado felt like it was sweating. I know this is from trapping the gas ethylene (this is usually released slowly and causes avocados to ripen over time) and speeding up the ripening process, but it felt weird feeling on a sweating avocado. Haha!

When I went to cut the avocado, it was hard to cut through. After many attempts of cutting the avocado, I was able to finally cut through it and open it. The avocado looked ripe on the inside. My mom taste tested a slice from the avocado and said that it felt hard. In my experience testing this hack, the avocado only looked ripe. It didn’t feel like a ripe avocado sadly :(. I’m going to try this again and then I will update you guys on round 2 of this experiment.
