Chapter 10: Growing Pains
Tumblr media
Back to school meant back to reality, your future entirely depended on what you did for the last year and you couldn’t help the feeling of dread filling every available crevice in your mind. If your mind wasn’t occupied by schoolwork, quirk exercises, or your friends then there was the existential thought of your future. You took a deep breath and pressed your back against the cool wall, even with the summer uniform you felt hot and sticky. Your class had been plucked out of lessons to talk with the school's counselor and a special guest. A hero carved out time in their schedule to be here to discuss the futures of young heroes hoping to enter schools like U.A. College and Shiketsu University.
Rio, a part-time hero part-time counselor, had made a few headlines with local shoplifters but had their big break when they discovered a mass murderer covering a crime scene. I guess minor heroes need extra gigs sometimes too, you thought as you looked up at the ceiling patiently waiting your turn.  Now here they were, aiding students in figuring out what they wanted to do when they grow up. Students who weren't interested in the hero colleges would attend other universities and discuss their future with your teacher Mr. Akiyama instead of Mx. Rio. Meanwhile, you waited in line with a handful of others in your class, including Izuku. He tried to strike up a conversation while you two waited in line, before you could respond you looked over at Hanai who had a longing pained look in her eyes. You were all too familiar with this look. You twisted your head back around to Izuku, trying to gauge if he was clueless or unnecessarily cruel to one of your best friends.
“You should be talking to her, you know?” You said in a hushed voice, he looked taken aback and confused.
“W-what do you mean?” He softly and nervously, “Hanai’s been avoiding me, I thought she just didn’t want to talk to me.”
“She doesn’t,” You said, he furrowed his eyebrows and looked at the ground confused. “But she wants to talk to you.”
“I’m confused,” he whispered.
“Obviously,” You sighed, “Girls' feelings are complex and I’m trying to help you navigate, you’re a boy so you might never understand what goes on in our minds.”
“I hope I won’t, it sounds confusing in there.” Izuku rubbed the back of his head, he looked stressed. He briefly looked over at Hanai who had turned her attention to one of the girls in line with her.
“I’m curious,” You started after a minute of tense silence, “What exactly did she say to you when she told you she had feelings for you?”
“W-when she what?” His cheeks reddened, “What do you mean?”
“What do you mean ‘what do I mean?’” You peel yourself off the wall, “She told you she had a crush on you and you blew her off, that's why she doesn’t want to talk to you right now.”
“I thought she wanted to talk to me,” He whispered harshly.
“She does, but that’s not what we’re talking about right now. She told me that she told you that she cared about you and liked you, then you rejected her.”
“I-Well she didn’t exactly say she had f-feelings for me,” Izuku gulped and looked at the blonde at the other side of the doors. “She told me that she liked me a lot and wants to support me and my dreams.”
“And you didn’t take that as ‘This girl might have a crush on me?’” You scoffed and rolled your eyes as Izuku shrugged with his palms up. “Izuku she likes you, like a lot. The girl might even be in love with you.”
“I see,” The blush on his cheeks brightened but his green eyes dimmed. With a determined look and a shake then he was back to himself. “I-I don’t think I can do a relationship like that right now. I’ve been working really hard on myself to get into U.A. and I don’t want to mess it up.”
“You should be telling someone else that,” you tossed your head in the direction of Hanai.
“Miss Hamamoto?” You turned your attention to the faculty door as your name was called, then made your way towards Mx Rio as they held the door open for you.
“Good luck!” Hanai called out to you.
The roll of your wrists emitted a soft round of cracks as you stretched and relaxed your arms. After briefly twisting and stretching in your desk chair you were ready to start your quirk training. It took no effort to summon a ball of water the size of a baseball to your hand, the frost spread from deep within until the whole thing was frozen. You looked over the ball to take mental notes of imperfections, whether it be a divot or a lump where the water naturally moved itself or not. You took your opposite hand and held it over the ice. It took more effort for you now than it did before, you weren’t an expert in melting your ice but your father always said with practice you could prevail. The outer layer of ice began to melt and fall onto the towel below you. Slowly the ice melted but you strained to keep as much of the water from falling towards the towel below you. The water floated where it had been and began steaming as you strained to heat the last bit of ice remaining.
You groaned with effort as your forearms began to burn. One more push, You thought, You got it, you can do this. Just one more push. You forced yourself to persist, the heat penetrated the ice deep within and melted it completely. When the water in your palms completely evaporated you felt a sharp pain shoot up your forearms and around the back of your triceps. You yelped in pain and felt the tears well in your eyes as the white-hot shocks persisted in your arms. The idea of getting up and opening the door was hard to stomach, much less doing that and then having to go to your father for help. You called out to him, hoping he could hear you from where he was. You winced in pain as you sat back in your chair and observed the blue lines that shot up your arms, the edges were surrounded by frost-like lines and traveling up what looked like the main blood vessels. As the ‘frost’ grew you could feel your heartbeat quicken, and hear the soft thud of a body hitting the floor. You weren’t sure if it was you or something else that fell, but your knees suddenly hurt. Your father pushed the door wide open, his wide shoulders consuming the doorway in its entirety. His face grew worried when he saw you on your knees with the markings on your arms.
“What happened?” He asked, quickly making his way to you and helping you stand. You weren’t feeling pain standing, but the pain in your arms made you want to buckle.
“I was practicing,” You sniffled, “I-I was trying too hard to melt and evaporate the water... When I let go my arms started hurting real bad and I got this.”
“You’re going to be okay,” Your father ushered you out to the hall towards the stairs. “Say it, ‘I’m going to be okay.’”
“I-I’m going to be okay,” Your lip quivered as the pain felt like it was spreading throughout your body. “I-I’m going to b-be okay.”
“We’ll get you to the hospital. You probably just overextended yourself,” Hamamoto Akira said as you landed at the bottom of the stairs. Your mother stepped into the hall from the living room and reached out to you.
“Oh, sweetie, what’s wrong?” Hamamoto Chinami touched your hands and retracted instantly at the touch. Concern drew her brows together, taking in the sight of your arms. “Baby, you’re burning hot.”
“I feel so cold though,” You held your arms close to your body.
“We need to get her to the hospital,” Akira said, gently touching your back to lead you toward the back door. You stumbled towards the door with your father close behind while Chinami shuffled around and grabbed her things before joining the two of you at the car. Your mother climbed in the back seat with you and gently pulled your head to your lap. Akira started the car and quickly peeled out of the driveway. The drive was a blur, your consciousness drifting in and out as your father raced his way down the roads. You may have drifted off to sleep at some point because you woke up in a rolling hospital bed with bright white lights passing above. Nurses pulled you into an area and started hooking the machines up to you, you felt the sharp prick of a needle on your arm and again in your hand. The pain made your eyes open wide to find the source, a nurse had withdrawn blood from the veins on your hand and slapped a bandage over the prick.
“It’s getting hot in here,” You heard a nurse said, her back was turned to you not too far away.
“It’s her, the patient’s quirk is causing the heat.” Another nurse said, her wince brought your focus to her as she pulled the pulse reader off of your finger. She dropped the piece and flicked her hand as it cooled off. “This thing is burning hot, I don’t know if the machine even registered the vitals.”
“Miss Hamamoto,” The nurse to your right called to you, his voice came to you muffled. It felt like cotton had filled every inch of your mouth and stuffed into your ears. “Miss Hamamoto, we are moving you to a solitary room. You’re having what we call a Quirk Spurt, one with levels we haven’t quite seen before.”
You groaned and closed your eyes to block out the bright luminescent lights above. The nurses wheeled you further into the hospital, the voices in the hall growing quieter while the rattling wheels and shoes grew louder. Despite the feeling of cotton in your ears, it felt as if the rubber squeaks of sneakers echoed in your head. You slid your cold hands over your ears and drifted back to sleep again.
The pain in your arms subsided when you woke up again, but you felt your head pounding against your temples. You were in a hospital bed in a solitary room with only one window that faced the hall, a doctor stood with his back to you and your parents sat on the chairs in front of him. You sat up and looked around at your surroundings, a simple pull-out couch tucked in with a few blankets from home folded at the ends. The tv in the corner had hero commentators talking about last year's U.A. College’s Sports Festival. The wall ahead of you had the usual nurses' station stockpile with a small bouquet and a couple of get-well-soon cards sitting on display. Must be the last patient's stuff that got left behind, you thought.
You didn’t know how long you’d been asleep but you could feel the uncomfortable pain of a catheter in you and tapped safely on your leg. The remote beside the bed had pictures of the bed in rising and falling positions and a red cross labeled nurse’s desk. You raised the bed to meet your back and peeked around the room for anything that could tell you what time it was. Come on they have to have a stupid clock in here somewhere, You combed the walls with your eyes and looks to either side of the wall near you. It wasn’t until you strained your neck to look up did you think to lay the bed down and look up at the wall. Sure enough, there was a red digital clock on the wall showing it was 10:43, so you had only been out for about 5 hours. As you positioned yourself comfortably again the door creaked open, and your parents led by the doctor came in. They both rushed over to your side, your father kneeled and held your hand gently while your mother went rigid and gave you a seemingly robotic arm rub. You could tell by the way she shifted and her lips quivered that you knew she wanted to wrap you in her arms.
“You’re awake!” Chinami squeezed your arm, “You’ve been asleep for so long.”
“How long was I out? A few hours?” You looked at your parents and the doctor as he filled in the clipboard about your awakening.
“A couple of days actually,” The doctor interjected.
“Days?” You said frantically. Your parents nodded gently and looked at the doctor. “What do you mean days?”
“Dr. Tsunada,” He introduced himself, “Your parents brought you in the evening after last, this will be your third night here.” The doctor came over to you, Akira stood and let the doctor run his vital and reflex tests. “Possibly your last night if your vitals are safe.”
“So what was it?” You asked as Dr. Tsunada held his stethoscope to your back, you took a deep breath and let go as he signaled.
“You had what we call a Quirk Spurt,” He said, “Much like a regular growth spurt teens and young children go through, a Quirk Spurt can often cause immense pain. Your vitals were off the charts in ways we couldn’t explain, and the air around you changed. At one point it was so hot the only person able to stand in this room without special equipment was a young blonde visitor, the one that left you those flowers.”
You looked over the nurses’ station to the arrangement of red camelia and gardenia. The first thought in your mind was that Haru came to drop them off, he had a shield quirk so, of course, he was able to get in safely. You felt the blush rise to your cheeks at the thought of the young man coming in to see you because he cared, but then remembered your hair hadn’t been washed in a while and you hadn’t had a bath in the time you had been there. Your face fell as your happiness was destroyed in the blink of an eye.
“Now this wasn’t just any Quirk Spurt,” The doctor went over to the swing computer station next to the bed where he inputted the information he collected.  “Your mother’s quirk allows for energy to be manipulated at the molecular level, and your father’s extract water out of the nearby atmosphere. Your quirk happens to be a mutation meaning you can manipulate water you extract at the molecular level, giving you the ability to raise and lower the temperature of rivers, a cup of water, or just the atmosphere around you. All of this means you were constantly changing the molecular stability of the things around you, it was uncomfortably humid in here for about 3 hours yesterday.” The doctor hummed as he completed his checks and slid the computer away from him. “Your vitals seem normal though and the temperature in this room is the same as in the hall. Let’s keep you overnight to keep make sure you’re stable and we’ll release you in the morning if all goes well. Sound good?”
“Yeah,” You gave him a short nod and waved over your crotch, “Now what can we do about this situation?”
“What?” Your father barked.
“The catheter Dad!” Your wide-eyed worried face calmed him down.
“We can get a nurse in here to take that out very soon,” The doctor held a soft hand out, “Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it. Now in terms of rest and recovery, once you leave, you will have to come back in a month for a check-up and then again the next month. During this time I don’t want you straining yourself or practicing too much.”
“But the U.A. exams are in January, that's 4 months away, that doesn’t give me nearly enough time to practice and perfect!” You looked over at your father who had a similar expression to your exasperated one. He weighed the options in his mind a moment before shaking his head softly shrugging.
“You’re going to do just great even if you miss out on some practice the next couple of months,” Akira said, “You need to make sure you’re caring for yourself, can’t go to U.A. if you push yourself too hard anyways.”
You crossed your arms in defeat and leaned further into the bed, defiant but willing to comply if your father agreed it was best.
You were released on a Friday morning, you weren’t planning on attending your classes that day but your father assured you that ‘you could skip out another day’. The bouquet in its small fish bowl vase sat in your lap on the car ride over. When your hands got on the vase you scoured every centimeter of the thing trying to find a letter or a card showing who it came from. He’s the letter type for sure, you thought, He’d leave a note on flowers if he brought them. Unless... You looked over at your father as he steered the sedan off of the highway towards your neighborhood. He must’ve thrown it out, Haru’s older so he might not 100% approve of a romantic relationship between his 18-year-old daughter and a 20-year-old boy. You held the vase close to you as you thumbed through your massive list of notifications. Mostly emails about application deadlines, cc of your school absentee emails from your mother, and updates on a fan fiction you were reading. Obviously, Haru and Hani texted a bunch, Izuku too, but more surprisingly Bakugo’s name popped up with one message.
Bakugo K.: Looks like Hammy’s finally grown into a Hog, congrats on your Quirk Spurt loser.
You set your jaw and breathed out slowly, scrolling away to ignore his message.
Hanai: So Izuku talked to me today
Hanai: Turns out he honestly didn’t understand what I was saying
Hanai: He said you explained it to him cause he’s a stupid boy
Hanai: His words exactly btw.
Hanai: He still doesn’t want to be together but he wants to be friends still. Idk what to do.
Hanai: Hello?
Hanai: Thank you by the way, for talking to him.
Hanai: I think I want us to just be friends. Ya know? Might just be better off this way.
Hanai: Helloooo????
Hanai: You’re worrying me, what’s going on?
Hanai: I’m calling your home phone
Hanai: Bro wtf is going on
Hanai: I’m calling ur parents
Hanai: 😅 Ignore my last few messages, I hope you get better soon! Haru and I are already planning to go to the hospital in the am
Hanai: Love you! ❤️
You smiled as you watched your friend's train of thought process over the one-sided conversation. Clicking on Haru’s conversation you were hoping he’d say something about the flowers he left behind for you.
Haru: Good Morning! I know you’re in the hospital still but I wanted you to hopefully wake up to some cheery news. We’re coming to see you, we’ll be there before lunch.
Haru: So sad we didn’t get to see you awake, nurses said you were out all night. I didn’t know what to get you so I left a card, Hanai was no help trying to pick something out for you.
Haru: Sorry that sounded sooo lame, but you get what I mean. Get well! See you soon!
You felt a ping in your chest as you realized you weren’t sure who the flowers came from. Then you remembered your mother had mentioned in passing that she remembered Gardenia’s when translated from the Hanakotoba meant secret love. This had elicited an unhappy grunt from your father. You were too embarrassed at the time to ask her who left the flowers for you, but now your suspicions were slashed. You pulled the cards from under your vase and flipped each of them open carefully, Midoriya, Horita, and Bakugo. It couldn’t be Haru, he already confirmed he just got the card. Izuku already said he wasn’t looking for a relationship and he wasn’t blonde like the doctor said the gift giver was. That left Bakugo, you were sure he didn’t leave you flowers with hidden meanings. It didn’t seem in character to come at all much less know about flower languages, meaning his parents dragged him along while you were asleep at some point.
You opened your phone and looked up ‘Hanakotoba’ on Google, finding a wiki link showing you a list of flowers with their pictures, meanings, and translations. The white flowers were Gardenia, which your mother accurately remembered as flowers meaning secret love. Then there were the soft red petals of the Camelia, a flower representing being in love. In love, perishing with grace? you thought as you read the description. Like dying in your presence, or dying to be with you?
The water in the vase sloshed around as your father made his way over the train tracks signaling you were a few minutes from home. You locked your phone and stuffed it in your back pocket. Maybe the flowers weren’t meant to be symbolic like someone just thought they were pretty and wanted to get them for you. Maybe.
