“wahahahahait!” riddle giggles, his defenses collapsing the second you start tickling his sides. you smile at him, chuckling.

“don’t tell me you’re already regretting this,” you say and he averts his eyes, a bright red blush on his face. you had been studying with riddle, your boyfriend, when you suggested a break. he responded that you two had just begun studying and you said that if you made him laugh, he would let you go on a short break. he had no idea what you were planning, but being unable to truly say no to you, had agreed.

“t-thihihis is cheheheheating!” he cried, his arms flailing about, though it didn’t seem as if he was making a real effort to escape.

“i’m making you laugh, aren’t i?” you ask, innocently as you scribble your hands over his tummy, gently tracing around his bellybutton.

“weheheheell, yehehehes! b-buhuhut not lihihike thihis!” riddle laughed, a crooked smile planted on his lips. he was so cute.

“you’re just mad you cracked immediately.”

“ahaham nohot.” you snorted at that, but stopped a few seconds later, feeling that he had had enough. you felt satisfied and positively delighted at how cute and ticklish your boyfriend was. he, on the other hand, seemed embarrassed but not upset.

“so.. that study break then?” you say, when he had finally caught his breath. he sends you a half-hearted glare.

“i think that was enough of a break for you.” he replied, opening a page from the alchemy textbook in front of you. he pointedly ignores your groan, but you suppose he was right. it was quite a pleasant break for you.

Riddle Rosehearts loved you. He loved you so, so much. His whole world started to revolve around you. He started to slack off on his studies, even if it was only by a little bit. He wanted to spend more time with you, promising himself to do his work when he came back. But he always went straight to sleep when he got back to his room, exhausted from having the time of his life with you.

His (almost) perfect grades dropped from 99 percents to 85 percents. He forgot to complete homeworks and both his dorm and he suffered because of it. 

Standing in front of you, he swore it hurt him more to break up with you than you. He suffered knowing that you didn’t know how much his mother would mentally abuse him for letting his grades slip for staying with you. With you, it was perfect. And yet his mother couldn’t care about anything other than grades. He hated that you would cry and sob, probably for days, over him breaking up with you. And he tried so hard to not cry in front of you. But he could feel the tears welling in he back of his eyelids as he said, “I’m breaking up with you.”

And as tears welled in your eyes, you asked, “Why?”

☾ Notes: I just wanted to do something fluffy (for once) for Valentine's Day and found a dialogue prompt ("Hold my hand or I'll die") that I thought was funny. Cross-posted on AO3.

It’s no secret that Riddle worked a lot. His time management skills were near perfect in order to do the workload that was demanded of him. He is a dorm leader and one of the top students in NRC. It’s no easy task to do either of those things, and you know this.

But a few things that you’ve noticed about Riddle since you met him was that when he is focused on something, he will complete his task and then some. As such, he tends to tune out the world around him, especially if he’s alone. You’ve learned that a few taps on his shoulder would get his attention, maybe accompanied by a few calls of his name. Usually, he would stop for a moment, ask what you need and then wrap up whatever he’s doing if your matter was urgent. 

However, you heard nothing from him all day.

Usually, Riddle would answer his phone right away, if not a few minutes afterwards. He would also inform you whenever he was busy to avoid blowing up said device, but he also didn’t do that today. Maybe he forgot and put his phone on silent to avoid his ears from being blasted off in case somebody called while he listened to music, or maybe he saw it while he was busy and just forgot to text you that he was doing something. You don’t know.

What you do know is that you did not see nor hear from Riddle all day, and the first thought on your mind was to rush over to Heartslabyul to check up on him. Luckily, you were greeted by Trey at the door who informed you that Riddle has been in his office most of the day and hasn’t budged an inch since lunch. It was almost tea time. 

You stared at the scene in front of you. Your boyfriend was hunched over his desk in his office, eyes roaming over a report. He was dressed in his dorm uniform though the crown was placed near the edge of his desk, most likely put away after using it for so long. Your eyes zeroed in on his phone face-down on his desk and the earbuds plugged in. So his phone was on silent.

“He’s been like this for a while,” Trey whispered. He had led you towards Riddle’s office knowing that Heartslabyul’s maze of a dorm was hard to navigate. The two of you were standing at the threshold of his office, quietly waiting for the dorm leader to notice you but he didn’t. His eyes were still on the paper in front of him, occasionally marking it. “I’m a bit worried since he hasn’t eaten since lunch.”

You sighed. “It’s fine, just leave it to me.” You looked at the small stack of papers to his right and the larger one to his left. “He’s almost done, so it’s best to wait it out and let him finish whatever he’s doing. I’ll bring him down in time for tea.”

Trey nodded and left the room. You sat on one of the chairs in front of Riddle’s desk and pulled out your phone to check the time.

Four o’clock PM, an hour until tea time. 

You looked at Riddle again but his gaze was still zeroed in on his paper. You glanced at your phone again and groaned. An hour was going to be a long time.

About fifteen minutes in, Riddle had neatly placed the paper on the left pile. You may or may not have spooked him a bit when you waved at him as he was putting the paper down but all he did was give you a gentle smile and nod before grabbing the next paper from the right stack. 

By the thirty minute mark, you were getting tired of waiting for him. Aside from Riddle acknowledging you earlier, his eyes had stayed glued to the paper. The soft scratching of pen against paper was the only thing that broke the silence. Your boyfriend at least had some music but you didn’t, and after worrying about him all day, you had no more patience to wait for his attention. 

Leaning over, you rapidly tapped Riddle’s desk until he looked up. He tilted his head in confusion when you held out your hand.

“Hold my hand or I’ll die,” you bluntly stated.

Pulling out one earbud, Riddle blinked. “What?”

You raised your hand higher. “Hold my hand or I perish.”

His eyebrows furrowed at your antics as he said, “I need my hands to work.”

“You only need one hand to write.” You shook your hand, practically shoving it in his face now. “And I only need one of your hands to hold mine, so hold my hand or I die.”

“You won’t die, if I don’t—”

“I will.” 

Riddle blankly stared at your hand then at you as if reconsidering if this relationship was worth your silly distraction (it was) before sighing. A satisfied smile stretched across your face as you moved your chair closer to the desk to avoid hunching over it. You laid your head on his desk using your other arm as a pillow, careful not to touch any of his work, as you watched him go back to work. Content to just watch him until Trey inevitably called the two of you down for tea.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Riddle is not for it at all, only because of the dangers you told him about. He refuses you every time you ask until you say you're going to leave whether he'll go or not.

"Y/n, no you're not going!"

"I am, and you can stay or come with me"

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Riddle only goes with you to make sure you're safe and that no one fucks with you and if they do then he can protect you. He, of course asked for Crowley's permission and waited for the go ahead, which Riddle thought wouldn't happen but imagine the shocked face when Crowley said it was fine.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ So you took Riddle's hand as he begrudgingly followed you to the location you had set out to find.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Even though he mainly went to protect you, part of him was intrigued to see what human ghosting hunting was truly like.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Riddle doesn't let go of your hand the entire time while you set up either which is sort of new to you.

"Ridde, love, I need my other hand to set this up. Can you let go please?"

"I'm not letting go, you can set up with one hand."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You managed to get him to let go, but once you finished his hand was connected with yours again, gripping a bit tighter after each evidence provided.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ He did find it cute how excited you got with each event going on and all the responses happening.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ He didn't show he was cared of the responses, and really he wasn't. He was only scared about your well being.

"Y/n, What's going on?"

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Riddle noticed you staring off into space down the corridor of the building you both were in. It took a bit for you to respond.

"Just saw a figure down the corridor. No big deal."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ He laid you down somewhere and gathered all of the things you two brought and put them away. While he did this you said the goodbye message and the mantra of not to attach to either of you.

"Come on, we're leaving."

You gave him a pout as you gripped him closer causing the boy to blush a bit.

"Do we have to? Me and the ghosty boy was having fun."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Riddle shakes his head as he rants about how dangerous it was and how lucky you were that he was there to help you.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ He asks you want ghost hunting is since it's not something in Twisted Wonderland that is explored. It also doesn't help that the ghosts show themselves pretty easily

"Huh? Whaddya wanna go ghost huntin for? Ramshackles gotta tun!"

"It's not the same Ace! Or are you to scared?"

:🌹 ̗̀➛ That's how he ended up at an abandoned location, that you of course didn't ask Crowley to go to, in the dark clinging to you.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You tease him about clinging to you but he retorts with "Noo" and "You're the one who's scared".

:🌹 ̗̀➛ The fear dies down a bit after seeing all the equipment you brought with you and saying how much of a dork you are for bringing so many things for something that's obviously faked.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You don't listen to those comments but you explain to Ace what each thing is and what it does.

"This is an EMF meter. It tracks energy currents. And this- ACE WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

"Nothing, just seeing how this works."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Ace was messing with the motion sensor device with an antenna with three lights. He turned it on and was using it to make a lot of noise.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ It annoyed you to no end and it took you 5 minutes to get it back and to calibrate it properly. But you were glad he was having fun.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ As things start to intensify evidence wise, he grabs your hand and it's not because he's scared, well that's part of it, but its because he wants to make sure you're safe

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You're talking to the spirit through the spirit talker app you got on your phone and it seemed pretty tame. Ace was just watching you do your thing.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Once things start to turn dark, Ace is full on hugging you and making sure you're not to far from him.

"What are you?"

"DEMON"

"Y/N YOU BETTER START RUNNING!"

"Ace where are you going?"

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Once Ace heard demon from the app he booked it thinking you were holding his hand.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ He stopped about halfway outside realizing you weren't with him.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Ace tries to walk in but you come out seemingly okay and unscathed.

"What the hell? Why'd you ditch me?"

"Because it said demon Y/n!"

You giggle at him

"Just because it says demon doesn't mean it's dangerous. It's okay though, everything is packed we can go home now."

"Nah. Come with me."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Poor Deuce is so confused, like he understood ghosts but like the phrase 'Ghost Hunting' he thinks its something entirely different than what you mean.

"You want to hunt ghosts? Like when you hunt deer?"

"No pft, you're so silly Deuce. We're gonna go look for a location and talk to them."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ After you explained what it was to him, he was hyped because it was something new and from your world.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Deuce went to ask Crowley if it was okay for you guys to leave the campus that and the two of you were shocked he said yes, or did he?

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You found it cute, but were mainly focused on the responses of the spirits or whatever was around you.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Once the REM pod went off he jumped onto your back making you fall.

"Ah! Y/n! I'm sorry!"

"It's okay Deuce! We can leave if its to much to be here."

"But forcing yourself in this type of thing isn't good, just tell me when it's to much then we can leave."

:🌹 ̗̀➛ Cater is all for it. With his camera out and knowing what he wants to do, in fact you'd think he was the one who asked to go and do this.

"Of course cutie! We can go ghost huntin, as long as I can post it and your cute face to Magicam!"

"Okay! Lets go then!!"

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You both might as well ask Crowley if its going to be publicly posted where he could see it but you both don't wait for an answer.

"Cater, if you're just going to take pictures, then can you help set up atleast?"

"But I am helping, I'm seeing if I can get any pictures of the ghosts!"

:🌹 ̗̀➛ You just shake your head at him as he keeps taking pictures of you and only you.

:🌹 ̗̀➛ However seeing you more focused after each object being set up put him in the mood to be productive and help set up.

"I know, but I don't want you to worry about it."

"It said that it wanted me to stay."

"Do you want to leave?"
