And we are back with more historical hypothetical polls, this time it is:
English monarchs and nobles round two!
I am so excited to see who you choose this time.
Most of these are from periods of time I’m interested in. So a lot of it is mediaeval and Tudor. There will be more rounds so if you have any figures you really want to see a certain figure in a poll, please submit it.
I spend a good hour or so checking the fanfiction of the people I put in my polls first just to see what it’s like. I know I shouldn’t be surprised with fanfiction at this point but some of the stuff, I swear.
LIKE WHY THE FUCK IS THERE A WWE CROSSOVER WITH THE TUDORS?!!
Why is there Vince McMahon fanfiction? Just why? Especially considering the stuff going on with Vince McMahon right now.

To torture you: Courtenay extremely reluctantly giving Hal any last rites he may need in case the Dagger Incident does end fatally
Oh mannnn. I was actually poking at the thing I've been writing about the Dagger Incident and trying to determine just whether Courtenay knew about the Dagger Incident before Hal pulled it or whether he didn't know until afterwards (I think he's somewhere in the middle - he knew the gist of what Hal was planning but not the details). But man. Courtenay being the one who Hal goes to for the last rites? I'm going to go insane.
Though I might raise you a wounded Hal, post-Shrewsbury and delirious with pain, insisting that Courtenay give him last rites...
And both are like an inverse of Hal at Courtenay's death bed, where "after extreme unction, with his own hands wiped his feet and closed his eyes". I'm going to chew glass.
#torture me?#i am a depraved whump lover#asks#themidnightcircusshow#text posts#henry v#richard courtenay#hal's dagger incident#i also occasionally wonder just how genuine hal was with the dagger incident because like...#it sometimes feels like it it's the sort of thing where obviously henry wasn't going to actually murder him#like he probably realises that MURDERING YOUR SON THAT'S SUBMITTING TO YOU is a BAD LOOK if nothing else#everyone else he has assassins and executors for this is without judicial process and with his OWN HANDS#there's probably a very interesting way to study this through the sort of... gendered lens#because hal is in the passive role submitting to his father#but he is actually the active one in the scene forcing henry to act#but as some historians have pointed out henry and hal have their scripted reconciliation but henry concedes little to his son#he's still subject to investigations and distrust#but also henry still fails to be active one - he's deferring judgement and leaving it in the hands of parliament to determine#rather than acting the king and determining his judgements

#Also lbr considering his relationship with William Courtenay I don't know how much Richard would like any of Hal#'s suitors
given Richard II intervened to give William burial in Canterbury Cathedral (William asked that he be buried in the churchyard at Maidstone), he clearly warmed up to him! The real concern with Hal dating Richard Courtenay is John of Gaunt's reaction. 😱
The comedy of errors that could happen with the two of them trying to hide their relationship from their Grandfather/Uncle who still get furious at the sound of each other's names
(Also by far the funniest outcome to the bishop yeeting is if Richard and Hal have a hair pulling kink)

45 Years
Movies watched in 2024
45 Years (2015, UK)
Director & Writer: Andrew Haigh (based on a short story by David Constantine)
Mini-review:
45 Years is yet another gem from Andrew Haigh. It's quiet and low-key, but surprisingly intense. In a way, it almost moves like a psychological thriller, slowly giving you the pieces so that you can form a mental picture of what's going on. There's this sense of foreboding and tension that builds along the way, keeping you hooked from beginning to the end. But the main reason why it works so well is the stunning performances by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay; their work is so nuanced and real. Anyway, with this movie, Haigh keeps climbing my favorite directors list.

Bittersweet Thomas Barrow moments that make me want to smile and cry at the same time
Andy apologizing to Thomas when Thomas offers to teach him how to read - I think this is one of the few honest apologies Thomas has ever received.
Master George gifting Thomas an orange after his attempt - I mean, how can you not love this?
Cora thanking Thomas for rescuing Edith from the fire (literally one of the only times the family genuinely thanked him).
Robert realizing that Thomas, after all, is just as a human being with feelings, emotions and pain as everyone else.
Phyllis being genuinely concerned for Thomas in S5 and constantly asking him if he's alright and not giving in, even though he shakes her questions off everytime.
Phyllis not asking questions about 'choose your own path' but instead instantly understands and takes him to the doctor right away.
Richard asking Thomas out for a date multiple times (in the ''swan on the lake' scene, in this deleted scene at the servant's table and after the prank, making sure, he knows where Thomas will show up).
These two absolute legends at Turtons who whistled after Thomas, trying to flirt with him (underrated queens).
The moment Phyllis realized that what Thomas meant with 'he hopes, Joseph would make more of his life than Thomas has ever made of his.'
Mary visiting Thomas after his attempt, asking him how he is doing.
Richard gifting Thomas the pendant and Thomas looking like he's in a dream - the first time I saw this man speechless.
Mrs. Hughes comforting Thomas in the pouring rain in S3 after he got fired and basically kicked out of the house.
Thomas standing up for himself when Carson called him 'revolted' and 'foul'.
Phyllis basically encouraging Thomas to go on a date with Richard.
Every Thomas + children interaction.
Thomas talking and comforting Edward Courtenay in S2.
Thomas asking Richard if they want to be friends... FRIENDS...
I could think of so many more but I think that's enough for now. Thanks for listening to this completely unnecessary list.

I felt the need to struggle with my computer to make a line graph of Hal's unhinged energy levels:
Because he does that have that "I will die for my country, my father, my wife, my siblings and my boyfriend" vibe but he's trying to be so normal about it so not to scare them. I always imagine Courtenay as like at least 90% unhinged as Hal (after all he goes along with everything Hal does), he just gets away with it a lot better because he has that mask of geniality and normality, because Hal's the only one he's unhinged about and because he still has 10% of his braincells hinged to occasionally be Concerned and Rational because someone has to be and clearly its not Mr "Hi Dad I Gave You A Knife So You Can Kill Me And Prove I Love You".
But it's time to do some research and now he's going to learn all the courtly romance moves and he's going to get such a good grade in courtly romance, something that is both normal and possible to achieve. And Catherine is just sitting there like, "oh mon dieu"
#listened to a podcast where they said Henry loved Catherine because That Is What Kings Do#(this was the same podcast that said Henry died young because robots weren't built to last)
yesssss I loved that Rex Factor podcast
#Hal is getting a good grade in King something that is both normal and possible to achieve
I need to make this into an edit.
#Also sometimes I feel like Catherine was his Courtly Love ideal except in Courtly Love you never get the girl#so once he got her he was at a complete loss as to what to do next
Now I'm just imagining him in a panic the night before their wedding because he's Too Asexual For This while trying to research how to give a woman an orgasm because The Romance of the Rose is far from helpful in that regard.
Hi I went through your Catherine tag and found myself cracking up over the tags on this post, specifically these
#they probably loved or at least were fond of each other#(still soft over him sending lyre players to her)#but romance just doesn't seem to be in his nature
I don't know what's funnier. The idea that Hal has an absolutely deranged romantic nature where he's just, "babe I'm cold can I open your ribcage and snuggle in there please?" and "babe if I die, I want you to cannibalise me. At least a little bit." which is something he knows is deranged and would ever dare say to Catherine (he saves it for Courtenay). Or, the idea that he's just not romantic but he knows a good king is a good husband and goddamit he's going to nail this so it's like. an intense study session where he's reading all the courtly romances (getting into the debates about The Romance of the Rose and What Women Want) and Catherine just ends up being... totally bemused by his technically perfect display of courtly romance because no one actually does that, Hal, it's weird...
I feel like Hal would probably direct most of his unhinged energy at his family (if he'd been alive in the Victorian era he probably would have kept a locket of Mary's hair or something. And he brings "Can I die for you? Please let me die for you" energy to his brothers. And Henry, but Henry keeps playing. Love is asking your father to murder you). I kinda love the image of him treating Courtenay the same, but Courtenay is a normal human (he's not, they're just different levels) who keeps getting Concerned and Hal doesn't want Concerned he's just being a regular guy who behaves a regular way.
So instead he starts taking notes on How to Be a Normal Person In Love. And if he goes a bit over the top that's fine. Hey a lot of Courtly Love is about me dying for you can I die for you

Now Anne and her brother's power struggle with Cromwell had begun. In 1534, she had made Cromwell high steward of her jointure lands, but that grant was a sinecure, a sweetener rather than a real role. So far, their sparring had been intermittent, beginning a month or so after Anne's coronation, when she had vetoed the marriage of Cromwell's favourite nephew, Richard Williams, to the widowed daughter-in-law of Sir William Courtenay of Powderham, as she felt Courtenay had snubbed her when he excused himself from her coronation. In that skirmish, Anne was the victor. Shortly afterwards, Anne refused to take the wife of Stephen Vaughan, one of Cromwell's most trusted servants, as her silkwoman in place of Jane Wilkinson.
