The Bye-Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case
Tumblr media
Been almost a month but fuckin, not really returning on a very high note. I wasn't even especially optimistic going into this episode I think your mensa and high IQ society stuff is all bullshit, I'm rather fortunate that it's not really a cultural thing here at all and I think even in America it's going down the shitter. But the 70s pastiche of Columbo often does make interesting premises out of culturally dated concepts, so it's not like I wanted to write the episode off before it even started. But man this just felt like nothing. Murderer to murderee dynamic is that of two lifelong "friends" but one of whom is always bullying the other, and said bully kills the victim, whom has no definition beyond the fact that he's the victim. Murderer meanwhile completely lacks any entertaining or interesting characterisation until really the final 10 minutes of the episode - said 10 minutes are good, he talks about his lonely childhood turned into a different lonely adulthood, and his anger during the gotcha scene and just the whole back and forth camerawork for the whole bit is good - but before that you've got a complete nothing guy with no real dynamic with anyone around him. Not that it matters because this is one of the weakest casts of characters in any episode to me. There's just nobody to really like. George and Alvin are our most prominent supporting characters and just exist to do a fudging accounting numbers plot that hardly feels relevant to the episode's premise or narrative or killer's motive or anything. I think the one little girl in their little mensa was probably the most likeable character but she disappears like 20 minutes in and her only substantial scene is being happy to be complimented on her body instead of her mind which, yeesh. Hell while I'm on that the comments about male secretaries, huh? I get it it's the 70s but I feel like they usually work around this a little better. Only other notable female character is murderer's wife who tells him to move on from the victim's death within 20 seconds of learning about it which was deranged. I've also not even spoken about the fact that Columbo hardly even does any actual snooping this episode, we kinda just wander around learning about boring subplots and then right at the end Columbo just recreates the exact sequence of events leading to the murder through knowledge that he functionally acquires off screen. It's just nothing all across the board. I like the bit where Columbo talks about being surrounded by people smarter than him so putting in the hard work to catch up. There's our one unconditional W. Otherwise this was pretty bottom of the barrel for me. Weird fuckin season really, but it's the last of 70s Columbo once I watch season 7. Should be interesting. Weeeeee.

I was MAL relations fiending and got reminded that this has a sort of epilogue sort of recap movie. It's not necessarily been that long since I watched Anohana but I honestly remember fuck all about the whole thing other than buying a can of Pepsi when it was all said and done. Which is a weird thing because it's kind of a cultural touchstone for western anime fandom, or at least it was closer to its release. Yeah I took a while to get around to it and didn't really like it that much but just feels weird how little recollection I have of it. In a sense though I think that made me like this movie more - I didn't feel reminded of what I had seen as such but I guess it's like I got all the emotional highlights with most of the dumb bullshit removed? And the characters get a little more closure too? The final hide and seek bit was actually like fairly effective on me this time around and shit. Makes you think. Still didn't score it amazingly obviously this is a recap movie for a series I apparently think of with such little fondness that I had forgotten all of it but it was still a decent time. I can't really come up with anything else to say about it lol.

Jesus fuck I don't know where to start, it's all so new. Like the OP, the new OP. And I fuckin hate to say this but the OP made me like emotional. Not like upset or anything but as they were showing all these familiar girls and I remembered all the adventures I've been on with them I felt sentimental, and then they still showed mystery red girl and even a brand new girl for me to wonder when we're properly gonna see. It's so scary. Hell when we start the episode proper everyone is here, they don't all talk but Wenders and Kamome get to make actual appearances outside of their routes and I hope they get to reappear more often as well, I like seeing them, genuinely. There's repetition of first episode of each arc shit at play here but Umi being here improves those scenes because she's cute. The actual contents of her arc are weird as fuck lol? Hairi and Shiroha pretending to be her parents for her. I appreciate that it keeps Shiroha in main character status especially after her own arc was cut short but like huh, what an odd one. There's a feeling of genuine freshness with the new OP and moving beyond the original 4 heroines and I'm looking forward to VCing with my friend about this episode tomorrow.

The 13 or so minute long sequence that leads to this shot is without doubt the most impressive animated sequence in the medium of the 2020s so far, and honestly we can extend it far further back than just the 20s as well. I don't know how KyoAni do it. This is beyond talented animators with ideal working conditions this is like fucking several visionaries with infinite resources to do whatever they want and inadvertantly putting the rest of the industry to shame. It's unbelievable. I can't believe that that was a real sequence or that it went on for that long.

the lie is not yet revealed but it's at least about to be, probably. at this point I'm almost halfway through the show without dropping so there's fully a chance that I just end up finishing this.

New in box UK region physical Torna was at the lowest price I've seen it yet and I finally caved, thereby truly completing a physical Xenoblade collection. Feels good.

Do you think wealth accumulation and industrialization will driveout all the small-time family aura farmers and force them to work for industrialized aura farming corporations?
it will eventually become true that there is no ethical aura farming under capitalism
