Chess and Consciousness: A one shot between father and daughter

Prompt: Nova and her father are playing chess, after hours of quiet Nova and Terehito talk

"Why seven children?"

The question hung heavily in the air. There was an unreadable look from her father.

"A shaman." He answered with no emotion

"So why fear me."

The father crossed his arms.

"Because your mother lied to me."

"Lied about what?" Nova asked her voice equally void of emotion.

"Nagisa, people lie to get what they want. Power. money. That's why Mr. Mushimoto handpicked those suitors."

"That's insightful but what did mother lie about?"

There was a silence before her father stood and loomed over her.

"The same things you lie about."

Nova barely flinched, even as her heart started beating.

"For someone so smart your efforts to hide who you are sloppy." Terehito remarked.

"Like father, like daughter." Nova remarked back. "Is that why you sent me away when you could?"

"Yes."

"Did you expect I'd never learn."

Terehito glared at his daughter.

"Rei was the last one, that was the deal I made with them. You were born but that meant nothing." There was a sneer. "You are messing with things you don't understand Nagisa."

Nova's expression remained stoic but she clenched her fist under the table.

"I can keep learning. I can be the shr-"

"Don't talk out of turn."

Nova shrunk in her seat. There was another sneer from her father.

"You can keep playing your little game of doctor however long you please. But you will never your grandmother. The balance can't be restored it is futile to even try Nagisa."

Her father slid the tissue box across the table.

"Don't leave my house crying.It's shameful"

h3h3 said that joji ghosted him after he got famous, ian says they don't talk anymore too. I wonder if max was the only one he was really close with or maybe they just recently reconnected.

Ok that's a tricky topic of conversation. Read more because as always i cannot shut up.

H3h3 and iddubz don't really mean anything to me outside of their old filthy frank collabs. I actually actively dislike them. Yeah you read that right. Thats why ive tried to make the fact that i am NOT running a cancer crew blog here clear. I just hate iddubz's old solo content. Seeing him beat himself up online nowadays isn't great either but by god his old stuff is so so bad (to me). Internet drama and borderline hate speech is a recipe for disaster and if he was smarter he would have seen this coming. I understand that some people like his older stuff out of nostalgia but i am not affected by this. I was not into YouTube back then. Im still not into YouTube. I only know of him and h3h3 because im obsessed with their old homie. My perspective is different, these people barely mean anything to me.

Ok now, disclaimers aside. Ethan said that joji told him not to call him filthy frank when he was talking about his music and he personally interpreted that as him being embarrassed of his past. Personally its just clear to me that what joji was asking for when he was taking his first steps as a full time music artist was space. Being known as an ex youtuber can kill someones career and considering the sort of content he was making as ff it just doesn't seem weird to me that he wanted to separate the two lol. He gave countless interviews where he mentioned his old content and that he understood why people found it so hard to move on from such an iconic character but that he didn't like conflating the two. And even then, a few years later he was encouraging fans at his concerts to chant filthy frank so i cant help but feel like Ethan's assumption that he is embarrassed and trying to forget it ever happened is baseless and biased. And after that....well. Its pretty clear to me that h3h3 used to be enjoyed by people but its had a pretty obvious dowfall since then. Idc about Ethan's drama (or the man himself for that matter) but to be completely honest i wouldn't keep in contact with him either. Idk if you are one of those people who still enjoy his podcast but to me and to many others it just seems bad. Real bad. A lot of drama and too little substance.

Now Ian...Ian is definitely less clear to me as an outside observer. I may not like ~the old iddubz~ but joji obviously didn't have a problem with him. They always seemed to get along pretty well on all the behind the scenes and going through the cake trilogy together probably means that they developed something similar to a warriors bond. He was fun on their collabs. But alas, sometimes people who used to be close just stop keeping in touch. A lot of Joji's old college friends (pookie/david, the shaman/lewys, wheelz/tyrell) are no longer in contact with him and yet they all speak of him very highly. People online like to act like he somehow ""betrays his roots"" by not keeping up with people he collaborated with on youtube back in the day but youtube isn't his roots lmao. His high school and middle school japan friends have always clearly been very important to him and he never fell out off touch with them. He is often touring alongside Rei Brown and he has mentioned in interviews that he relies on these friendships on his day to day life (admittedly the interview im talking about was from 2018 but there's no reason to assume that he has suddenly stopped talking to people that he has been friends with since he was like 12 years old). At the end of the day he doesn't owe people online to keep in contact with anyone. People grow up and change and not all relationships survive the test of time. And thats okay. Stuff happens, people move on. For what its worth tho, i feel like iddubz's drama driven channel (because lets be fair the content cops were his biggest thing and they were youtube drama no matter how self righteous or fair they seemed at the time) didn't help. The thing about joji is that he had always avoided internet drama like it was the plague, which is once again one of those things that i appreciate deeply about him. I hate internet drama. But even my kinda biased opinion aside, the reality of the situation is probably very simple. They are both grown adults who live very different lives. They hanged out together during a few summers a lot of years ago. They followed different paths in life. It happens. Joji has been very offline for years now and i get the impression that he tends to isolate himself when his health acts up so its probably not that hard to fall out of touch with him.

And last but not least....Max. I won't lie, out of the cancer crew the only other person i actually like besides my man Joji is Max. Maybe he really was closer with Max, i certainly find him more likable. Around 2018 both Joji on twitter and Max on that one cold ones podcast episode said that they still keep in touch. Max was replying to a lot of Joji's tweets up untill the nectar era but once again, at the end of the day they live in different countries. I obviously have no way of knowing if they were still as close as they used to in the following years. Maybe they grew more distant for a while, maybe they reconnected around 2023 when joji took chad and max backstage at his concert, and then of course the wedding !! Its all very sweet, the gimme love Max and Chad video from the concert lowkey made me tear up.

But once again, at the end of the day they are all living their own lives, doing their own thing. And people who act like they owe it to them to be each others everything forever and ever because they met online a decade ago and collaborated on some extremely iconic videos make me laugh.

Tonight I will be performing my first Reiki session since 2000. Once upon a time I was preparing to perform reiki as a career. I had all the tools I needed, pamphlets made, a web page, the credit card machine, etc. And then Covid happened.

As I am diving back into my notes from 2020 I came across the below. It explains what reiki is and how one of my sessions usually works.

Dave (Das Energi) been a practicing Buddhist, meditating regularly for over 15 years. He has identified as a healer since high school when he would give massages for fun to friends and family. Through his hugs and touch, Dave transmutes negative energy into positive.

Dave had his Kundalini Awakening experience in 2014. Since then he has connected to his global soul family including shamans, witches, healers, and the divine. He is a beacon of light and love, guiding others on their spiritual path. He is a Kundalini Reiki Master and also a Level II Usui Reiki Practitioner.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a combination of two Japanese kanji characters: "Rei" meaning universal spirit and "Ki" meaning life force energy.  During a Reiki session, the Reiki practitioner connects with the universal energy source and places their hands on or above the recipient with the intention to encourage emotional, physical, or spiritual well-being.

Reiki is not a massage but rather a healing technique of "laying hands" which has been used for thousands of years across several cultures and continents. Most people find Reiki to be relaxing, however sensitivity to energy differs from person to person.

No two Reiki sessions are exactly alike. A session will begin by discussing the recipient’s intentions for receiving Reiki and if they are experiencing any discomfort either physically, emotionally, or spiritually. This information will be helpful in guiding the practitioner during the healing.

The recipient and the practitioner will then ground their energies with the Earth, and breathe together so that their energies are in sync and harmonized.

The recipient will then lay down, fully clothed, on a massage table and be encouraged to close their eyes and meditate or notice any bodily sensations that may arise during the session. The Reiki practitioner will then conduct a body scan, feeling if any of the recipient’s chakras are out of alignment or an auric cleansing needs to be done.

The Reiki practitioner will lay their hands on the recipient’s body and follow their intuition laying their hands on several bodily locations. It is important to note that Reiki energy will flow to other parts of the body. For example, if the Reiki practitioner lays hands on the recipient’s feet, the energy may travel to the recipient’s lower-back, or if hands are laid on the stomach, the energy may travel to the neck. The Reiki energy knows where it needs to go, even if neither the recipient nor the practitioner is aware.

During the final moments, the Reiki session will be closed with a brief sound bath. The practitioner will then seal the energy field and ground the recipient back to the Earth with breathwork again.

Everything is energy. The physical body is electrical and so are our thoughts and brain functions. Our thoughts form energy patterns and create emotions that affect our aura/electrical field. Our energy field interacts and influences everything around us including other humans, plants, and animals; even the food we eat is affected by the energy of the person preparing it. We are surrounded by energetic fields and it is common for people to unconsciously draw on the energy of others around them, affecting their emotions and vitality.

When there is an imbalance in the body, it is stuck energy. Energy must always move, and when it cannot, it will find the weakest part of the physical body where it will manifest itself into some type of challenge.

Reiki allows the universal life force to flow through us so that a heart-mind alignment can occur, releasing lower energy vibrations like fear, worry, anxiety, stress, anger, and disappointment. It brings balance to emotions, thoughts, biological processes, energy centers, and helps to reduce pain, inflammation, and stress within the body. 

For Reiki to do the best work you will also need to be a participant in the healing process. You must be open to the healing energy to flow within you. The Reiki practitioner is only a facilitator of healing, and it is the positive intentions of the recipient that affects the outcome most dramatically.

Everything in the universe is made of energy, therefore Reiki can be performed on everything in the universe. Most people use Reiki to clear their own energetic blockages, but it can also be used on our beloved pets when they need a boost of positive energy or as an alternative to using sage to clear our homes of negative energy (ideal for those sensitive to smoke or smells).

I am grateful for the ability to sleep as long as I want. For way too many hours, I don’t know how I do it. I am grateful for my excess of clothes. I have so many, half of them were handed down, but that’s the fun thing about having sisters. I’ll never say no to a hand me down even if I think it’s ugly at the time. It will always come in handy. I am grateful to have every material thing I want. Nobody can buy me anything because I already have it. I am grateful I’ve been spoiled my whole life. I am grateful for my big computer, that I can edit and do school work on, it even keeps my Spotify tab open. My old computer would not let me use Spotify because it took up so much space. My new computer though, it’s a fucking godsend. I am so grateful for my sister, she bought it. I’m technically borrowing it, as long as I edit for her. But the ram is just heaven for me. I am so grateful for my opportunity to do school work. I love learning. I love the online discussion posts, it’s so much better than sitting in a classroom. In a classroom, I’m much too shy to communicate what I think, it even leaves me right away. But the online discussion posts are like heaven to me. I get to write about topics and do research. I like doing that. I am so grateful I got a 100% on my final paper yesterday. You don’t even understand how grateful I am. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn about holistic health rather than anything else. I find great joy in learning how the body’s functions work. The cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and the organism. I am grateful to be back in research mode, now I’m writing another paper just for fun. Not for any class. It’s about the Rosy Cross Meditation and the development of the human. Obviously using Rudolf Steiners work. I am SOOOOOOOO grateful for Rudolf Steiner. I am so grateful for his work, I idolize him. I am also grateful to be an infj, that’s what all my idols are, including Jesus Christ. I know we shouldn’t necessarily idolize humans, but I think it’s important to follow the formulas, that our idols follow. Like yeah, I love Lana Del Rey, and I do idolize her to an extent. But I don’t want to end up like Lana Del Rey. I mean I don’t want to be a famous singer. But I want to be a scientist, a spiritual scientist. I want to study Anthroposophy and even Theosophy. In my textbook, it said that long ago the Priests were the ones tasked with healing humans. They had no medical knowledge, they only had faith, if someone survived it was considered a miracle. Now I get to live in the blessed time, where a healer can be both. A healer can recognize the people before the priests, who got rid of the spirit behind the sickness, not the sickness itself. Like shamans. I want to be a healer in the most influential sense. I want to tie it all together. I want to rid the spirit of the entity that has attached itself, I want to help the mind overcome the dilemma, I want the heal the body with physical means. I want to do a lot of things, like a lot of things. I have many desires. But I want to heal people. And I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore this path. I really get to do it. I really get to learn about unconventional medicine.

I am very very grateful. My grandma sent me a video of some Bible dude, who said the one way to overcome anxiety is gratitude. I’ve been lacking lately, it happens.

I’ve been recognizing a problem, in doing so, I neglected being grateful. It’s hard to be grateful sometimes, when you know you’re making choices you don’t align with. You wanna beat yourself up. So much, you start making even worse choices, and you don’t even know why.

It’s only because I was enabling a pattern of regret and frustration. By doing so, I was making more choices to regret.

I’m still making some regretful choices. But I will overcome this. It’s just the challenge, and I’m grateful for the test. It’s an opportunity to prove myself to my higher self.

I want to embody her, but my vessel isn’t prepared for her. I’m trying, I’m going to get my vessel prepared. It just takes time. I shouldn’t beat myself up. I should love myself into making the changes and tweaks.

I am grateful. Thank you God.

ANSWER #1: Rei travels back in time to her own childhood

Rei lost her parents at a young age. Her aunt (her only living family) was supposed to take her in, but she declined, leaving Rei adrift. If Rei went back in time to an era in which they were all alive, perhaps back to Rei's childhood, I can absolutely see her befriending her aunt and parents with three goals in mind.

The first goal is to say goodbye to her parents. To spend time with them, really bask in their presence, because she doesn't have a chance in her current timeline.

The second goal is to understand her aunt better, in hopes of soothing some of the hurt still lingering from her aunt's betrayal/abandonment. She'd befriend her aunt and try to get to know her. Maybe even change her mind about why she abandoned Rei. But time is fixed, supposedly, so Rei has little hope of pulling that off.

The third goal (and perhaps the most important one) is to tell her younger self that everything will be OK. She wants to give her younger self the advice she'll need to make it through the next few years--the advice Rei was never given but could have used in a crucial formative moment.

ANSWER #2: Rei travels to Himiko's time period (AKA the Yayoi Period)

As we've learned in The Sight Unseen, Rei has an ancestor who was an ancient warrior queen, shaman, and psychic. This woman (Himiko, whose soul is currently sealed inside an ancient mirror) is the supernatural source from whom Rei draws her powers.

If Rei got sent back in time to Himiko's time period, I can absolutely see her tracking down her ancestor, kicking in the palace doors, and demanding A TRAINING ARC.

"Hey Grandma, you would not B E L I E V E the bullshit I'm going through in a few thousand years, so BUCKLE THE FUCK UP, you're my sensei until this time travel bullshit resolves itself! Eye of the tiger, lady! Let's fuckin' goooo!"

Cue the training montage set to a backdrop of shakuhachi flute and shamisen music. Let it be known Himiko would make Genkai's training camp look like a preschool.

ANSWER #3: The Roaring 20s

Because the first answer was so goddamn depressing, here's another "fun" answer to lighten the mood of this post: Rei would head to 1920s America so she could attend a bunch of parties and learn the period-accurate dance moves (and also make out with a few mobsters just for the fun of it).

Os presentamos una de las maravillas más antiguas del arte mueble paleolítico: el Hombre-León de la cueva de Hohlenstein-Stadel, en Alemania.

Hace unos 32.000 años alguien talló delicadamente esta figura de casi 30 cm de altura tallada en un colmillo de mamut. Representa a un ser híbrido entre humano y león, habiendo quienes consideran que era un chamán con un tocado de cabeza de león o quienes sostienen que era una divinidad, o un simple adorno, o un objeto apotropáico o... Como ocurre con las Venus o el propio arte rupestre, caben muchas interpretaciones. En el brazo muestra 7 misteriosas marcas, como de garras, que tampoco ayudan a desentrañarlo.

Pero más allá de la belleza de esta figurita, la traemos porque es un titánico ejemplo de reconstrucción. Su descubridor, Robert Wetzel, recogió en 1939 más de dos centenares de fragmentos de marfil de mamut en las excavaciones de la cueva, intuyendo que podía tratarse de algo importante. Nunca tuvo oportunidad de trabajar con ellos porque inmediatamente después del descubrimiento fue llamado a filas. Estallaba la II Guerra Mundial.

Así que nuestra figurita permaneció en un cajón repartida en 200 pequeños pedazos durante más de 30 años. Su restauración, tal como lo veis en la imagen, duró 40 años más.

The Lion Man from the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave

IT'S NOT THE LION KING, BUT… We present to you one of the oldest marvels of Palaeolithic furniture art: the Lion Man from the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave in Germany. About 32,000 years ago, someone delicately carved this nearly 30 cm high figure from a mammoth tusk. It depicts a hybrid being between a human and a lion, with some believing it was a shaman with a lion's headdress, others claiming it was a divinity, or a simple ornament, or an apotropaic object, or…. As with the Venus or cave art itself, there are many interpretations. On the arm it shows 7 mysterious claw-like marks, which do not help to unravel it either. But beyond the beauty of this figurine, we bring it to you because it is a titanic example of reconstruction. Its discoverer, Robert Wetzel, collected in 1939 more than two hundred fragments of mammoth ivory in the excavations of the cave, sensing that it could be something important. He never had the chance to work with them because immediately after the discovery he was drafted into the army. World War II was breaking out. So our figurine remained in a drawer in 200 small pieces for more than 30 years. Its restoration, as you see it in the picture, took another 40 years.

The God and the Gwisin review

This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and I'm so excited to have gotten an ARC!! I got an ARC of The God and the Gumiho last spring too, so it's been ~torture~ waiting for this one. I have to say, it definitely delivered!

At the end of book 1, the Red Thread of Fate had just appeared to Seokga, indicating Hani's reincarnation. In this book we discover that shortly thereafter, the Red Thread became hopelessly entangled and Seokga has spent the last 7 years trying to reach the end of it. He's worn down, stressed, depressed, and just generally not having a good time. Hwanin, who really does want Seokga and Hani to find each other again, decides Seokga needs a vacation...and straight to the river cruise in hell they go. Literally. Funnily enough, that's exactly where Yoo Kisa, and thus the end of the Red Thread, is.

When she was alive, Kisa was a shaman of childbirth and healing. She specialized specifically in maternal and childbirth medicine and became one of, if not the, youngest doctor in Seoul's magical maternity unit. After her death, she's become the on-ship doctor for ghosts (gwisin) who need a vacation. It's not the most glamorous job, and Kisa definitely misses her magic, but for the most part she goes through her day-to-day activity with little complaint. Because Kisa is a rule follower. Basically the exact opposite of Hani. And that's an important thing to take note of. Hani was sarcastic and flirty and not afraid to break the rules, but Kisa is deeply analytical and follows her mind rather than her heart. Altogether, the two are quite different. That being said, both of them are deeply caring and protective, and I found them both to be funny. They have different kinds of humor to be sure, but both Hani and Kisa can be hilarious at different times. And neither are afraid to put Seokga in his place when the situation warrants it (and because this is Seokga, you know the situation warrants it).

While Kisa is not Hani, I still liked her character. She is very analytical and her passion for medicine and science really comes through. I appreciated seeing an analytical STEM character who genuinely carries that through to all aspects of her life. Case and point: Throughout the book she continually takes notes on the gods, the Red Thread of Fate, and anything else 'new' so that she can write a research paper on the topic(s). A research paper. As a gwisin. You can see how she became the youngest doctor, and I actually kind of wish we got a sneak peek at one of those papers, they sound fascinating, lol.

Seokga, as mentioned, is not exactly at the top of his game. He was living contently enough prior to the Red Thread showing up, he got a huge burst of hope, and then was plunged into spending the next seven years desperately trying to find Hani's reincarnation, only to discover she died mere hours after the Red Thread showed up. What an emotional rollercoaster. Luckily Seokga's been seeing a therapist, which is going about how you'd expect, but it does seem to be helping a little.

Some past characters show up as well as new ones. An obvious friendly face is Hwanin. He accompanies his brother on the cruise (RIP) and we get to see a little more of the two's relationship here. It's been 33 years since Seokga was restored and the two are on much, much better terms. I enjoyed their sibling ribbing as well as the clear care they both have for each other. There's also another friendly face from Seokga and Hani's time in New Sinsi in '92 and when I say I did a double take 👀

Hajun is a new character and is Kisa's best friend. He's a dead kpop idol who works in the ship's clinic with Kisa. I really liked his character. He was protective of Kisa but was also newer to the world of creatures and so did sometimes have minor freakouts over what was going on around them. He's sweet and brought some levity to the situation, which I liked.

The mystery in this one is, obviously, who killed Hwanin. I was pretty invested in figuring this out, particularly since the Hwanin here is not the same Hwanin as in book 1. There are misdirects and twists and honestly for a while no good suspects, which makes it hard to formulate a hypothesis. I did figure out parts of the mystery, but wasn't able to figure out the entire thing and was a little off on certain parts, so it was a nice surprise when everything was revealed at the end.

Overall I enjoyed this book and seeing what happened with Seokga's Red Thread of Fate. Kisa was definitely a different character to work with, but I liked her and she and Seokga managed to figure things out. The mystery was also good and I enjoyed trying to puzzle out where it was going. I do think I like book 1 slightly more (Hani will forever have my heart) but this is an excellent sequel.

From Omega and Next Dimension, better don't ask me; my mind lives in denial. My favorite characters are the Golden Saints, especially Aioros and Aioria, being Aioria my super favorite.

💥 I'm a Marvel Girl. I love those tormented superheroes and antiheroes. I basically grew up watching Marvel since Iron Man came out in 2008 and I immersed myself fully in the world of the comics, I have a lot of comics and books on my bookshelf 🤭. My favorites are: Iron Man ♥️, Captain America, Spider-Man, Loki, the X-Men, Black Widow and Scarlet Witch, in all their presentations and with all their charms and defects!.

I love it K-Dramas like Goblin: The lonely and great God, Crash landing on you, Tale of the Nine Tailed 😋, I have also watched many animes like Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club, Toradora, Code Geass, Inuyasha, Kaleido Star, Shaman King, Attack on Titan... it's a long list and I don't remember everything at this moment 🤔. Miraculous Ladybug (I know it's for kids, but ... there is Chat Noir 🖤).

🐉In my House of the Dragon era 🖤: Like many people, I was also terribly disappointed with the horrible ending of Game of Thrones, but I really loved Fire and Blood when I read it in 2020... so I decided to give the serie a chance when I saw the first trailer... and I don't regret it! 🥳. I liked Daemon and Rhaenyra so much in the book and absolutely loved them in the TV Show! (Matt and Emma are incredible! ❣️). Another character that I loved in the book and the one I always wanted to know more about was Jacaerys Velaryon and I must say that I am very pleased with the choice of Harry Collett 😍 (oh yeah baby! 🔥).

I really hope that the directors and writers do justice to this wonderful crown prince! 🥰, because for me he is already one of my favorite characters of all time! ❣️.

One thing I'm curious about is Kidoshu and their Kido. Did it start as something from just the Kitaro franchise? or was there something it was based on (aside from Onmyoji) and thus other anime series also use this (One example I remember right now is Bleach)

Hi! Oh gosh we are getting into deepest lore territory here. I'll just preface this by saying I'm not an historian or anything, so I will take huge shortcuts to keep this concise and relevant to our main topic, that is to say, Genazo nerdery (and well, Gegege nerdery at large). I encourage you to look up the notions I mention in this post to take a deeper, more informed look into the subject!

So! In Gegege no Kitaro, we have Kidoshu, or practicioners of 鬼道, kido. 鬼 is read ki, the same ki as in Kitaro actually ; and in Japanese it refers to oni, the famous ogre-like yokai that you've probably seen portrayed in various anime and manga before. But in kido specifically, it refers to the Chinese meaning of 鬼, the spirit of the dead, or just "ghost", like in the ghost Chinese constellation for example. It doesn't necessarily have the evil connotation of the Japanese oni. 道 do is "way", "path". the same "do" as in judo, for example. So together it makes something like, "the way of departed spirits", or "the way of ghosts."

It's important to have the Chinese meaning in mind because kido existed before oni and before Japan was named Japan, as such, the first historical sources mentioning it are in Chinese.

Kido is associated with Queen Himiko, about whom historians argue many aspects of her historicity, so I won't dare giving you an history lesson myself haha... In the late Yayoi period (~second/third century), Queen Himiko of the Yamatai (a country within Wa, what covers Japan nowadays, and whose location is still debated) took control of Wa using shamanistic magic called guidao according to the Book of Wei (Chinese source regarding Himiko), and rendered as kido in Japanese sources.

The nature of kido itself is mysterious and still debated, it being interpreted as an early form of daoism or shinto. Because Himiko is believed to have gained legitimacy and power in politics through shamanism, kido is also interpreted as a political system which deviates from Confucianism (and thus, vilified into sorcery)

The figure of Queen Himiko herself appears quite a lot in fiction - the Dawn chapter of Tezuka's Phoenix (which is a favourite of mine! I recommend it!) comes to mind first. But she also shows up in the video game Okami, and while not portraying the historical figure herself, the Danganronpa franchise also has a witch-themed character named Himiko! (... etc, etc.) So yeah, in fiction, the figure of Himiko is often used to portray witches, and even evil queens using bewitching sex-appeal and sorcery to gain power. As such, in popular imagination, kido is associated with the primitive sorcery of a female ruler. (because of course, if a woman gets in a position of power it's because she's a witch and she subjuguated her subjects, clearly...)

Which brings us back to Gegege no Kitaro : while the Kidoshu are all defeated with the exception of Rei Isurugi in the 2018 series, previous incarnations featured the Kidoshu led by a female leader, most probably as a nod to Himiko. Be it the manga or its anime adaptation in the 80s, they perform their magic while wearing a Hannya mask, similar to Osada in Gegege no Nazo.

So in line with its mysterious history, Kido in Gegege is an ancient magic, named this way for its extra ancient and occult connotations, making it feel more special and unique than the onmyodo typically depicted in popular culture. And if kidoshu aren't special and cool enough, Genazo introduces the extra occult, extra profane, extra forbidden ura-kido.... (undersurface / hidden side / back side of kido)
