SURGE THE TENREC FIGURE/DIORAMA THING! (from the IDW Sonic comics).
Model for this is Surge the Tenrec by thekingdog over on deviantart.
I got some LED filaments recently, and was looking for something to do with them, when Surge popped up on my dash and I had this idea.
I absolutely love how this turned out, it was a tonne of fun to make. Just finding a scourge STL file was surprisingly hard. I ended up having to use a VRchat model I found.
That actually worked out really well, because I could easily pose it and apply mouth expressions, even with my limited blender knowledge.
Then I went and made that process way harder by deciding I wanted to be able to light up the eyes, meaning I needed to hollow the head, punch eyeholes out and create a tube down from the head out the foot to run wires.
After managing to get that done (had to try several times because I kept introducing slicer artifacts with my 'BOOLEAN MODIFIER IS MY FRIEND' approach), I realised the heads walls were too thin and translucent, so I had to carefully shove milliput in there without blocking up the eyeholes... and in the process didn't realise I'd covered the wire hole, and then had to carve out part of the neck and back to get access again.
Worth it all in the end though, for how dope this looks.

The Pale Elf
3D print sculpted by Bulkamancer, printed in Siraya Tech grey UV Resin on my Elegoo Mars 2, and hand-painted by me! I cannot be more pleased with how he turned out 🥰

Had to share all these gorgeous details, like the TEXTURES on this models are just gorgeous! All that filigree and bead detailing is raised which made painting it much easier, but still very tedious (so worth the results though). This was my first time painting a face bigger than tabletop mini scale, and boy was I intimidated. Had some friends point me to ball-jointed doll makers and learned about detailing faces with chalk pastels, so I used pastels to give his cheeks some colour, blush the tips of his ears, and make the shadows under his eyes. I could go back and add more colour/texture to his hair but I think its best if I leave it, lest I play with it too much and end up ruining things. I have to keep reminding myself that just cause I can see things in macro lens photos, doesn't mean I'm actually able to go correct those things 😅
Regardless, I'm so so happy with how he turned out, and its crazy that I can look at this and go "me!!! I PAINTED THAT!! ME!!!", and now I have a stunning model of everyones favourite lil rat bastard (affectionate) vampire mans💕

Now that I have my 3d printer working and can semi consistently make it work, I have no idea what to actually use it for. I want to start a cool new painting project but I have no idea what to do. Thoughts, anyone?

My prints keep failing.
But I really need to finish up my commissions to buy a new printer. It's great!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you look at the bottom of their wings, you can see where they pancaked. The print I attempted today didn't even attach to the build plate, so I fucken give up.
It's time to realize that I am an artist and I can absolutely work with what I have.
Tumblr media
After two or so hours of scraping resin and reshaping the wings, I've got two dragons ready to be primed.
... but this means that I need to scrub out my airbrush and I've been putting that off for days now. 😭

Funny character as a mini, except it's rotating as a gif at a fraction of the rendering scale and with decent compression (thank you gif file format)

Dioramas - John Price x GN!Reader
NSFW at the end, minors & ageless blogs dni cw: brief smut at the end, implied hand kink (Price has one, fight me) | that's it, i think
Thinking about Price and his diorama-building S/O. He has an entire bookshelf in his office on base that is dedicated to the miniatures you make. You’ve made mystical woodlands inside gutted old books and underwater horror scenes suspended in small resin cubes. You often do your work in the second bedroom of the house which had been converted into your art studio. It was too small to house the many tables and tools you’d need to build bigger dioramas, especially the ones that required a 3D printer, a fume hood, a place to airbrush and spray paint, and so on.
It doesn’t escape John’s notice that you’ve been itching to work on bigger projects. When you’re restless at night, you turn on resin-casting and diorama videos to fall asleep to. It creeps him out that the videos with the suspenseful music and horror elements are the ones that put you to sleep fastest but at least you manage to get some sleep.
Being the acts of service man that he is, John starts saving up money to add onto the house or to build a comfortable, livable shed out back for your art studio. He’s hiring the guys to help with the building (he ‘hires’ them by promising good food and says he'll cover their paperwork for two months). Everything you need is put into place: fume hood, windows that promote good circulation, bright lights that can be dimmed, their temperature changed to ward off headaches or strain. He finds the most trustworthy 3D printer, airbrush set-up, and sander and buffer he can and helps you set everything up.
You try desperately to teach him how to use the 3D printer, but he gets too frustrated and tells you he’ll stick with sanding and buffing whatever you need him to. He asks for videos and pictures of your most recent projects when he’s deployed or when he’s staying late at the office (bonus points if your hands are shown, he's a fiend for your hands).
He loves your mind, your creativity, the ability you have to look at something—pictures or drawings for instance—and bring the scenes to suspended life. There’s a science behind mixing the resins, letting it set, picking the tools best for the job, measuring everything perfectly…
He can’t think about it for too long or he gets aching hard and desperate to pin you down on your worktable so he can fuck you while you babble on about your newest project and the progress you've been making.
[This was all purely indulgent. I need to learn how to use resin and get my hands on it, I wanna make so many things!]

Blatant advertising, goooooooooo!
HEY! STOP! Whoa. Sorry, I don't mean to intrude, but I can't help but notice that you don't have enough Battletech minis.
Let's fix that! I'm Derek and I'm working in collaberation with Discount Dan to fill your house with miniatures for chump change! I will print minis for you! Rent my resin 3d printer!
Tumblr media
Want a single normal-sized mini? 4 euros plus shipping. Not a bad price, but it really starts to shine when you buy a bunch at once because I'll only charge ya 1 euro for each mini beyond the first in each lot. You can get a whole-ass company for 15 bucks! Your choice of primed or unprimed. Hell, I'll even give the lot a zenithal highlighting if you want. Base included!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Give me .stls, I give you minis. Don't have .stls? Just tell me what mechs you want and in Blake's name, I'll make it happen. Probably. Blake was kind of a dick anyway. Here's the menu of .stls I have at the ready!
Tumblr media
That's just primed minis though, and you want some paint, yeah? Nice, clean paintjob of your choosing is 14€ on the first, and only 4€ each for rest. A table-ready company printed, painted, based, and sent to your door for 58€ plus shipping. I defy you to find a cheaper price. Want 'em grungy and weathered or clean off the factory floor? Simple bases or more elaborate? I love doing weird environment bases! We can do it all! Want some of my blood in the paint? I would, but I'm pretty sure that's not getting through customs...
A note about shipping! The current tarriffs suck and I am way too small to have a shipping contract with anyone. Right now, with forty euros for a small box means that I'm shipping groups of three miniatures to your door in thick, bubble wrap envelopes (4.50€ each). Keep an eye on this spot for updates as they develop!
Tumblr media
Okay, okay... I see you're a discerning customer. The basic packages aren't enough for you. You want the stuff under the counter. You want the custom machines. No worries, I've got you covered. Our techs can handle everything from adding a simple autocannon or missile pack all the way up to mashing two mechs together into an unholy mess. Twist my arm and I'll give you a record sheet to go along with it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll negotiate prices in private.
Don't like stompy robots? That's cool. Into 40K kitbashes?
Tumblr media
Or maybe you wanna make a character or two in HeroForge and pass the .stls to me; guarantee I'll do the printing and painting cheaper than they will even with shipping. Scatter terrain? Just a big pile of mini bases? Decorative add-ons? Tell me what you want and I will make it happen.
Tumblr media
Jump on this quick too, because these chump prices won't last. Message me on this hellsite or discord (theDereckoning) or email at [email protected] and let's make the printer go brrrrrrr for youuuuuuu!

hey 40k fandom, can you help me find a miniature painting youtuber i used to watch?
i think they were from australia/new zealand, and they did a lot of kitbashes. They also did a lot of terrain building. They had this huge messy industrial workshop, with like resin 3d printers and the like? I think it's just one guy. I distinctly remember them talking about the Cubes of Tzneentch but i doubt they were the ones who made 'em.
any clue as to who it might be??

Since it’s been ages on here I figure I’ll summarize where I’ve been and what I’m up to now. If you don’t care, here’s pics of my little guys! 😎
Looks like the last thing I posted about was the Leo Kickstarter. So I ran that, and it failed, and around the same time I got a Real Job that covered my expenses well enough that I didn’t need to take supplemental commissions. I still made stuff here and there, but found that absent of the motivation of money I wasn’t really inspired to make my own art. I didn’t know what making art for fun looked like anymore.
So I took a big break from doing any art, which started around 2020. Instead I focused all my energy on surviving working from home (work was apeshit around that time) and getting fit, and taking care of my pandemic puppy Newt. I eventually found my now partner, we moved in together, and over the course of the past two years we’ve both rediscovered our art and quit our desk jobs. He makes pottery in his garage studio (that is still a work in progress, but ALMOST DONE!) and about two years ago I was gifted a resin 3D printer.
I have always been intrigued with the idea of making miniature figurines, but I’ve never found a process I liked so it stayed a dream. Until I discovered resin 3D printing. I started out with a miniature figurine of my dog, which also led me to flocking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started printing little unflocked versions in bulk to keep on me on walks, and because Newt is such a charmer we’d often get people saying hi to him, and I’d give them a teeny Newt. It was such a mood boost to see folks so delighted with my silly little guys that I was inspired to make more.
I eventually made a set of little cats like the one in the picture set above for Halloween and sold them in my long dormant online shop, and they were a mega hit. From there I kept making new little guys to sell and here we are. I’ve been mostly on Twitter this whole time if you want to see what I’ve been up to in detail. I’m littleguys3d over there.
So yeah. That’s where I’ve been. Expect a remodel of this blog over the next couple weeks to reflect my little guys rebrand. I hope nobody is too disappointed that I’m done with sewing and custom orders, but I gotta chase the art that makes me happy!

Public holiday means a chance to paint something from the backlog!
Pretty happy with how this turned out for something I didn't really have a plan for when I started. I had no clue what colour I was doing for the hair until I mixed up a pink by accident and just rolled with it.
Putting the rust effect on the sword was lots of fun, it's such a cool texture.
This mini is Ninjix Crazy Paladin from Miniatures Blueprint.

Awe. Just look at dat wittle face...
This is Sloo the Sloth from Corderlia's Companion's miniature series. You can buy prints of them from multiple different seller's on Etsy. I purchased all six printed designs for $25.
Now, if you look at my post this is far more than I generally spend on miniatures. The fanciest one's I paint are around $2 each as I buy them in bulk and as random lots.
I went to the Asian Festival in Columbus Ohio with some friends of mine awhile back where I learned something new about a friend. She likes sloths! So... what does any good miniature painting friend do? I buy sloth miniatures because of course I need to paint one for her.
Rather than spending $6 a mini, I bought the set figuring I could paint and sell the others. Granted mini sales are down right now which saddens me as I am thinking more and more about buying my own 3D Resin Printer but that's a whole rabbit hole in itself as I know NOTHING about 3D printing.
At any rate, check out that little face. So cute. I can't wait to see how the set turns out.

New year, new campaign. My group is going hard into Epic Legions Imperialis and, with the addition of a Bambu P1P to the toolbox, we're expanding our collection of very small scenery with 3d printed parts from Grimdark Terrain.
The end result was really impressive. I had written off filament deposition printing for miniatures when the higher resolution resin printers started being able to compete with store-bought a few years ago, but the level of detail with this extruded PLA is really something else. Some of the undercuts are a little ugly, but you won't be able to see them in the course of regular play.
Conceptually, this piece is a city sector-wide void shield projector akin to the palace aegis network described in Siege of Terra. The massive discharge of exotic energies originate from the elevated dish creating a toroidal field pattern - so you can't just shoot at it from the ground, necessitating its capture by infantry forces if you wish to bring it down. A much more cinematic objective marker than a spare die or token.
If you want to build your own, the list of parts can be found past the break - Rudolf at GDT does some pretty impressive scenery and deserves your support.

This build utilizes parts from three separate Grimdark Terrain .STL packages; July 2021, February 2022 and November 2022. July and November are critical components for the major assemblies, but if you're stingy you can substitute the Recessed Shield Coils from February by doubling the number of #AG-063 Pavaise VS Projector Coils.

How did you discover painting, and what tools did you start off with?
I first got into painting once I discovered you could print miniatures with 3D printers. Maybe technically a little after that.
I'd gotten a filament 3D printer after saving up for ages and was using it for little things here and there, and a friend of mine asked me to print him out a 40k thing. It hadn't even crossed my mind that you could print miniatures up until that point. I DM'd a dungeons and dragons campaign for my friends, so I started trying to print D&D minis to various degrees of success for my games. Overtime I got frustrated with how low resolution a filament printer was and finally bit the bullet to get a resin printer so I could go all the way. After that it was only a matter of time before painting came along.
A friend of mine's been painting minis for ages and when he came over and saw all the gray d&d minis, he offered to teach me how to paint them. He's a great guy and all, love him to pieces, but that painting lesson happened for all of about 10 minutes before he just started painting the mini himself and not really teaching me much else. It was enough to pique my interest though and I started watching mini painting videos and talking to other hobby folks and bada bing bada boom, here we are!
I wouldn't recommend getting into painting this way though. 3D printing is fun and all, but it's certainly not easy. If you've got a knack for tinkering, diagnosing problems in machinery, and a spare couple hundred bucks: by all means give it a shot. Otherwise I'd recommend grabbing a couple minis off amazon and starting there.
As for tools, I started with the dinky little army painters starter kit. I had the two brushes that came with it. I would *not* recommend starting there though. For $50 you can buy way better stuff. I eventually bought this Magicfly set as my first official brush set which is what I use pretty much all of the time, and like two months after that my parents bought me this nice set of brushes on Amazon for my birthday which I haven't gotten to yet because I already had a set open. I'm about due to break them out though. The Magicfly set has lasted a good year or so, but they're starting to fray a bit. If you're looking for brushes, start there for sure.
As for paints, I'd recommend to not buy the bulk packs. Sometimes they're worth it, but usually I've found just buying the colors I need when I need them to be more frugal. Citadel and Army painter are my go to, but I've heard vallejo is good too, so any of those would be good starting spots.

My 3d printer is still borked to hell. I managed to get some undead bears printed, but literally half of what I had on the build plate failed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I adjusted some settings (my Z axis was off by, like, a LOT) and tried another Baphomet print and NOTHING printed. Like. Not even attachment points.
So back to the drawing board, I guess.
Have I mentioned that I have a commission that is kind of depending on my printer and, whoops. No printer.
In the meantime, if anyone wants to buy me these good boys, I wouldn't say no. 🥺
