“Remus,” James whispered softly in the doorway. 

Remus looked up from where he was laying Harry down in his bed, and Remus’s warm eyes met his, relaxed and fond.

James’s heart sped up just like it had over the past few years. When Remus read to Harry, his voice soothing and tender. Remus switching to a book for James after Harry fell asleep. Remus giving Harry a bath and James hearing Harry’s giggles down the hall as he made them dinner. Remus glancing up at him across the table. Remus singing Harry to sleep in that somber Welsh voice. Remus telling Harry to stop running and the heat flaring in James with the command in Remus’s voice. Remus letting Harry touch his scars. Remus groaning in pain and pleasure after letting James massage him after fulls. 

How had he not realized before? Remus was his home.

James is still smiling, but he’s also staring kind of fixedly at Remus. It’s a little hard to keep eye contact. It’s always hard to keep eye contact with James Potter, actually. His eyes are too intense. Remus is lucky he’s constantly wearing glasses.

James’ fingers are still touching Remus’s face so softly. There aren’t words to describe what he looks like right now. His mouth is half-open, and his tongue is pushing a little at his bottom lip. His eyes are so full of wonder Remus isn’t totally sure it’s him that James is looking at.

“James,” Remus breathes. Christ. He doesn’t know why it came out like that.

James pulls his fingers away, then blinks and focuses his eyes on Remus’s. God. That’s even worse.

Remus watches him slowly lower his hand until it’s in his lap.

“Hm?”

“What are you doing?” He’s lucky it’s so quiet in here. Remus isn’t sure he can raise his voice right now, and his vocal chords feel strangely like they’ve fallen out. The fire crackles weakly behind them.

James tilts his head slightly. “Deciding what kind of dragon it was that got you. Maybe a Hebridean Black.”

Remus woke up slowly, cocooned on the couch, light so gently filtered he questioned if it was still daytime. He was sleep warm, floating on the cushions like they were made of clouds that had been tied to the ground. Opening his eyes one at a time, he looked around.

He was inside a blanket fort. Again. 

A blanket fort that had not existed when he fell asleep for a midmorning nap. (Again.)

Remus let out a sound somewhere between a laugh and sigh, further twisted around a name. Even to Remus’ own tired ears it sounded like adoration.

“James.”
