As the first wizarding war draws near, the rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin becomes even more visible. You'd thought that being James's sister and a Slytherin would change things, but it only made things worse. Pairing: Regulus Black x fem!Potter!reader. Genre: fluff, some angst. Warnings: pureblood supremacy, war talk, slightly dark themes? Swearing, Sirius being a dick. YN calls Sirius a cunt.

The Potters and Blacks were, perhaps, two of the most popular wizarding families at Hogwarts; along with the Malfoys, Prewetts and the Notts. Yes, being pureblood had it's privileges, but it was popularity that put James Potter and Sirius Black on the map.

James and Sirius were the kinds of people that no-one disliked. They were good at sports, funny, daring, and over-all good natured people. They might not have the best grades like Remus Lupin or Lily Evans, but they were damn good at making people laugh, and no-one seemed to mind if they lost any house points.

When the Sorting Hat was sorting you into your house, it had mentioned Gryffindor. Out of all the houses, Gryffindor was the house to be in. Gryffindor made stars, and was home to many famous witches and wizards.

James was a leader. He became Prefect in his fifth year and Head Boy in his sixth year, and was the youngest Quidditch player in a hundred years to be made Captain of the Gryffindor team. He was a good friend - always loyal, always listening to the side of everyone's conversations, always making sure everyone was involved. He was a gentleman - when he had his heart set on someone, he knew exactly what to do and how to treat her right (in the later years, of course). Your mother and father were extremely proud of him.

You yourself were somewhat similar, as his younger sister, but you always envied him for finding most things in life easy. James had every opportunity laid out for him. You, however, had to work hard if you wanted something, sometimes twice as hard as the average student; hence why the hat placed you in Slytherin.

Being in Slytherin and being a Potter caused quite an uproar your first year at Hogwarts. Everyone in Slytherin had a bone to pick with James, based on whatever prank he and his friends had done on the house. Because of this, everyone had some kind of opinion on you, except for the first years, who knew nothing better but to be your friend.

You had met your first ever friend on the Hogwarts Express. James had brought you to sit with his friends, the "Marauders", as they liked to call themselves. You'd spent two Christmases with them before coming to Hogwarts, and honestly, they were pretty stuck-up, especially Remus, who was some sort of care-home yob, and glared at you every time you spoke.

Eventually, you left the carriage, telling James you wanted to make some new friends. He didn't mind, and jokingly told you not to make friends with the "wrong sort", although you didn't really know what that meant.

All of the carriages were full of people who looked older than you and scarier. You walked further down the train, wondering why some students were staring at you. You ignored them, looking through all of the carriages. Finally, after quite some time, you came across a carriage that was almost empty.

A small boy was sitting on the left side of the carriage, reading a book about Ancient Runes. You smiled, he looked so peaceful compared to everyone else; and he was your age. You put your hand to the door and knocked. He looked up, frowning.

The small boy put his book down and got up. He opened the door, "what do you want?" His dark eyebrows furrowing in confusion. You smiled apologetically, "I was just looking for a place to sit. My brother and his friends are a bit annoying." The small boy looked you up and down and stepped aside. "You can sit with me."

"My brother and his friends are a bit stuck up, too. I met them on the platform. My name's Regulus, by the way. Regulus Black."

Your eyes widened. This was Regulus Black? The brother that Sirius Black despised so much? Well, he didn't seem quite so decietful and troll-like after all, but perhaps siblings just disagreed with each other. You wondered why he was all by himself.

"I enjoy my own company, normally, but mother said to make friends. You seem like a respectable enough witch... Would you mind telling me your name?" You tried not to giggle at how Regulus spoke. You'd never heard a ten-year-old speak so posh before. You smiled, "YN Potter, nice to meet you."

Regulus's eyes darkened but he shook his head. "You're not bad for a Potter. Let's be friends." Regulus Black held out his hand, and you shook it, sitting down next to him.

The train continued to move through Scotland. "I'm afraid I'll be put in Slytherin," you said after awhile, putting your head in your hands, "all of my family's been in Gryffindor for thousands of years, but the other day dad joked that I was more cunning than bold."

Regulus looked at you, "I think what you did earlier was pretty bold." You scoffed, "what, asking you if I could sit with you?" He grinned and nodded, "yeah. Do you know how many people avoided me just then before you got here? Even in the Slytherin carriage they think I'm some sort of a freak." You frowned, "I don't think you're a freak. You're just a regular kid to me."

Regulus pulled a face, "I'll have you know I'm the second heir to the Most Noble and Ancient House of Black, an extremely respectable and non-regular young wizard." You let out a snort of a laugh, "what kind of kid has to be respectable?!" Before covering your mouth. Regulus smiled at you, "the ones who don't snort like that." You giggled.

Regulus started to get more comfortable. "All of my family's been in Slytherin for thousands of years, just like how yours is with Gryffindor. When Sirius was put in Gryffindor two years ago mum went absolutely ballistic. Maybe I might be put in Gryffindor too, but I think I'll probably be in Slytherin... I wish I was brave enough to run away."

You snorted again, "I wish I was brave enough to be in Gryffindor." Regulus laughed loudly. You turned to him, "if I am put in Slytherin, it won't be so bad if I'm with you." And he smiled.

And you were right. With Regulus by your side, you found it easy making friends in first year. Everyone in Slytherin was a pureblood, and was either scared of him (which you thought was truly ridiculous) or they respected him.

As the years went by, it was clear to most people that the two of you were as close as two peas in a pod. You were often seen together so much that on the rare occasions where you weren't together, you were asked where the other one was.

It was in your third year where you realised your feelings for the youngest Black brother was not just those of friendship, but something much stronger. As your crush grew and your Slytherin friends teased you about it, you began to worry and think of what would happen if you were to date Regulus, and what would happen when your big brother and his best friend found out that you were dating the little brother that he despised so.

And in fourth year, as if nudging these events into reality even further, you and Regulus began to date. In fifth year, the two of you became prefects and Quidditch Captains, and it was clear that you were a powerful unstoppable couple. Despite this, however, some people still did not agree with the dynamic of your relationship.

It was during lunch in the middle of your fifth year did the rivalry between Slytherin and Gryffindor really take its poll.

The war was almost in full motion, and it was obvious to anyone with brains that Voldemort did not have good intentions. There had been whispers in the Slytherin Common Room of some older students who had joined Voldemort's side through some kind of ritual.

James and Sirius were convinced that Regulus was one of these people, and as usual, had convinced themselves that they were right.

"What exactly are you trying to say, James?" You snapped. Your older brother put his hands up in surrender. "Don't get mad at me, I'm just the messenger. Padfoot thinks you should reconsider your relationship with Regulus, that's all." Merlin, were you glad that Reg was out in the pitch training. Sometimes his mad Quidditch obsession was a good thing.

You turned to Sirius now, "you think that, do you?" And Sirius shrugged. James jumped in quickly, keen to stop an argument from happening.

"Well you know how Padfoot's family are all very... Traditional," James was picking his words carefully, watching your facial expressions, "and he told me the other day that his folks had been talking about some dark lord for a long time, like, ever since second year, and how they were all going to join him and support him, and Padfoot was just saying-"

"Regulus is bound to join up!" Sirius butted in. James turned to him and sighed. You looked at him. "He means well, but he's easily coeerced into things, and he's always trying to impress mother, and they always brainwash him, I mean, just look at Bella."

You scowled. Sirius's parents may have been horrible people, but that didn't mean everyone else in his family was. Okay, perhaps one or two of his cousins had done some nasty things in the past, and Bellatrix was one of them, but you would always remember her as the girl who cursed some older students for boxing your ears. She'd said any friend of Regulus was a friend of hers and that you could count on her.

"Bella is a perfectly kind and respectable witch. She's really nice, actually." Sirius rolled his eyes at this. "Well, whatever, but don't come crying to me when your boyfriend has suddenly run off to join Voldemort. I'm telling you, all of them are like that. You know, at least ninety percent of Slytherin house are evil!" Sirius threw his arms up and you began to fume.

"But you always forget the main thing, don't you, Black?!" Typical Sirius Black to hate something but to leave an exception. "I'm a Slytherin too! You think we're all just so evil, do you? You think all of us want to join Voldemort? Since Regulus apparently will, maybe I will to PROVE YOU WRONG, you righteous, narcissistic cunt!"

Lily and Marlene gasped but you didn't care. Sirius scoffed even louder. "Oh, that's rich, coming from YN "I don't want to be a Slytherin" Potter! But I suppose after snogging my dear brother everything's fine, is it? Suppose the death eaters will just have to snog you to convince you to join up-"

"CONFRINGO!" The Gryffindors shrieked loudly at the sudden spell. Sirius flew backwards, knocking down the students who were sitting next to him and you knew who it was immeadietly. Regulus was always rather powerful with his magic.

Sirius got up and glared at his younger brother, taking out his wand. Regulus held his chin high, "don't you say a word against my girlfriend." And Sirius scoffed. "Is she really your girlfriend, or is she just someone who you lock lips with in your bed? LEVICORPUS!"

You dove infront of Regulus just before you saw Sirius wave his wand, but forgot to take out your own, and now you were hovering in the air. James let out an enraged roar, getting up. "WHAT THE FUCK, PADFOOT! DID YOU JUST CURSE MY FUCKING SISTER?!" You didn't think you'd ever heard him be so mad before.

Sirius glared at him, "I was trying to get Regulus, but the little weasel doged it just like everything else in his life!" You tried to fight the enchantment, "GO FUCK YOURSELF, BLACK!" kicking at the air. The other students laughed.

"Expelliarmus!" Regulus flicked his wand and Sirius's wand flew out of his hand. "You're just as bad as mother," Regulus hissed, "cursing an innocent person." Sirius rolled his eyes, "oh, I'm as bad as mother? Who's the one still grovelling about her knees and begging for her admiration?! Who's the one who-"

"CAN THE TWO OF YOU JUST SHUT UP AND PUT MY SISTER BACK? FINITE INCANTATUM!" James wove his wand angrily, and you fell back down to the ground. The school had stopped laughing now, and were all just watching intently.

Regulus turned to you, "are you okay?" You dusted yourself off and nodded, "I'm good." You turned to Sirius. "Not that it's any of your business, but Regulus is my boyfriend and I love him. So if you can't deal with that you can just get lost."

James looked the two of you up and down before nodding solemnly. He turned to you, "YN, Regulus, I'm sorry. I didn't see it before, but I do now, and I can tell that you're in love. So, what I'm trying to say is, if you want to be together, I don't have a problem with it anymore." James nodded at Regulus, who still looked a bit taken aback that he was being addressed.

Sirius scowled, "I still do."

This time it was Regulus who rolled his eyes. He then turned to you and grinned, "since you've got such a problem with it, Sirius, watch this." You looked at Regulus in confusion before getting the memo and grinning. Regulus smiled too, grabbing your waist and leaning in, kissing you on the lips. Slytherin house cheered as the others stared in shock.

Sirius scoffed in disbelief, "whatever." And you smiled, kissing Regulus again. James made a sound, "you better remove Regulus from my sister, Padfoot, or you won't have a brother anymore." You giggled softly, threading your fingers through Regulus's dark curls before looking up into his green eyes and pulling away.

This is really hard for me because Lily and Remus have always been my favorite characters, but I genuinely think Sirius is the best character in the Marauders.

I could spend hours talking about him, but I feel we don’t discuss enough just how smart and self-aware this boy was. Even as a kid, he never believed in the blood supremacy his parents tried to instill in him. At eleven, he became the first Black in history not to be sorted into Slytherin. That in itself was an act of rebellion and bravery. He was incredibly brave from such a young age, and he always found pride in not being like his family.

"He was always very kind to me, Sirius. I don't think he ever hated anyone as much as he hated his family."

"Sirius had taken pride in being different from the rest of the family."

We don't know for sure if he was physically abused by his parents, but we do know that he was 100% psychologically, emotionally, and verbally abused.

Sirius talking about Regulus to Harry: "He was younger than me," said Sirius, "and a much better son, as I was constantly reminded."

Walburga's portrait in Grimmauld Place: "Youuuu!" she howled, her eyes popping at the sight of the man. "Blood traitor, abomination, shame of my flesh!"

And there's more, definitely more. Sirius is one of the strongest characters in Harry Potter, along with Harry himself. He found a family in James for the first time in his life, so it’s ironic that he would later be accused of killing the person who opened his home to him. He spent his life carrying his last name like a burden while trying to prove to everyone and himself that he was nothing like his family. And in the end, it didn’t matter, because he was still accused of killing his best friend and being just like the rest of the Blacks. He tried to keep Harry safe, giving him to Hagrid along with his motorbike, and still, he spent twelve years in Azkaban for a crime he didn’t commit. Even after he got out, he was never entirely free, but he was just... full of life, even when the Dementors and Azkaban tried to take it from him. He was so willing to fight, so willing to live for Harry and protect him with everything he had. He never stopped loving, never stopped fighting for what was right.

I hope he knows everything was worth it, that his sacrifices, struggles, and unwavering loyalty made a difference. That he showed Harry a glimpse of what real parental love is, that he was loved... that his little brother loved him so much and never judged him for leaving, even when he missed him like an aching void that could never be filled. I hope he knows James never blamed him for what happened, and that Remus never really hated him.

In the end, I just hope he knows that he was loved deeply, missed profoundly, and remembered always as a brave, loving soul who showed people around him what it means to truly live. To those who mattered, he wasn’t remembered as the criminal son of the Black family, but as a loyal friend, a devoted godfather, and a beacon of hope. He was not just a survivor of his circumstances but a hero who rose above them.

obviously you’re allowed to like anything you like and I’m not coming at you for it but I swear so many people are posting about moonwater recently and it makes me want to crrryyyyyyy

I would never enjoy them as a “realistic” couple in the same way Remus and Sirius are. And anon, don’t fear it will be a one time thing if I do it. But there is something so tempting about an uptight Regulus, maybe a magical AU where he’s struggling with his blood supremacy beliefs and hates werewolves, half breeds, etc, and so finds himself at quite a problematic crossroads when he realises he is in fact, crushing on one. Remus would be taking every advantage of that pretty little know it all.

This could work as an AU for wolfstar in all honesty, where Sirius isn’t so kind and is a bit more saturated by his family’s foul beliefs. But if it were to be wolfstar, it would end up being a full story arc of Sirius falling in love with Remus and that love is the lifeline that pulls him out of the hold his family has on him. Being each other’s worst enemy and best friend, sneaking around, all that. It would be ugly and angsty and full of depth, whereas this, pure filth for the sake of filth.

Nothing deep about this other than Remus’ horse 🐓 slamming the bigotry out of Regulus.

Do you think James and Sirius would ever keep secrets from each other? It’s really just my gut feeling but I think James wouldn’t. However, I’m not sure about Sirius, he seems to me the type to bottle up his emotions and put up a tough front because he wouldn’t want James to worry about him. Would Sirius talk to James about how his family makes him feel?

On the whole, no, I think that the trust that we see they share would effectively dissolve any boundaries or reservations they'd have and it wouldn't even be a question of "I can talk to Sirius/James about this".

However, as you say, I think James sort of never has those reservations. I think James is naturally very open and he wants to share things with Sirius so he does, for him it's mostly as simple as that. James "trusted Black above all his other friends" and that is presented without question, there's no competitor, and I think it's as simple as that for James.

For Sirius it would take longer, he'd sit and stew on things a while privately but he would always tell James sooner or later. I agree that he bottles his feelings up more and he puts on this almost bored exterior. When Sirius tells Harry about his family, it's just "they're dark wizards and I hate them" and he doesn't really go into depth, he seems almost annoyed that he has to talk about them. Sirius takes things in his stride so I think conveying difficult things in his life would always take the form of an inconvenience in his delivery to minimise the sympathy, maybe, but I think his actual feelings would be stronger than that, he'd just regulate them alone - perhaps as a result of being expected to compose himself by his family.

I think James would always know about Sirius' family, but the specifics of Sirius' feelings and specific incidents might come later. I think it would be like "my mum and dad are strict", "my whole family believe in blood supremacy", "my cousin married Lucius Malfoy" rather than going into real detail and at 11, 12 years old James is kind of satisfied with those as facts and maybe doesn't feel the need to dig deeper or realise the wider implications until they're a bit older and he realises the severity/regularity of these snippets.

As they go through school I think Sirius would gradually be more revealing but I still don't think they're conversations that Sirius would want to last long. Sirius is quite clear about marking his difference within the family home so I don't see why he would try to hide that at school, I just think it would be a factual thing publicly and it would just be James who he'd be like "She made the house-elf spy on me all summer" kind of details to, again in a venting way. We don't get much sadness from Sirius about his parents in the books, just hatred and a desire for distance so I think at Hogwarts he'd largely be content just by dint of being away from them.

Also I think with Remus' werewolf secret, with the Animagus secret that they all share responsibility for, the trust is there. Sirius goes to James after he's told Snape about the Whomping Willow - I feel risking James' anger/disgust/whatever negative feeling James may have felt overwhelms any other things Sirius may have found difficult to share.

By the time Regulus joins the Death Eaters, I think Sirius and James would be at a stage where sharing things would be natural, and I think Sirius would go to James to vent about it unprompted - "What the fuck is he doing? Is he stupid? He's sixteen years old, I can't believe this, I bet you he thinks our doting mother and father will love him more, the idiot".

James I see as being more protective of his information in regards to Sirius, but I also don't really see James as having any secrets. I don't think they'd intentionally hide anything from each other and I don't think they'd be able to. James and Sirius have a very equal bond in terms of intellect and ability and I think the other would always be the person who would "get it" best and who would be thinking within the same parameters, thinking most as the other would, who would come up with the most fitting solution for each other, so it would be natural for them to want to share and to have the other's opinion.

Ultimately, I don't see any meaningful secrets between them. I think they know each other well enough to recognise when something is being concealed, and I think they'd both actively want to share, to a point where it's not even something they have to weigh up. Even straying into fic territory where they hide their feelings for each other, I think they'd both either work it out or have to tell the other eventually.

I think people who say that Sirius would pick or save Reg over James are crazy, I’m sorry 😭

Idk how unpopular this is but Remus would drive everyone else crazy by picking the longest, most pretentious prog rock ever for parties. Peter is the only one with good taste. James is tone deaf. Sirius is a complete poser who will pretend to be into bands he’s never heard.

I don’t think Reg has a big circle of close friends. I love the Skittles in AUs but they really don’t make sense to me in canon compliant stuff, especially if the writer is trying to push that none of them were into blood supremacy.

I really like Lily and Sirius in Jegulus fics: I feel like they’re given much more depth and complexity than they are in Jily/Wolfstar stuff.

People have a really hard time making Dorlene and Moonseeker interesting as actual dynamics I would like to read about and not aesthetic Twitter threads.

If James/Remus/Regulus ended up being a thing and I was Sirius, our friendship would be over. Especially if they kept it from me. Oh, wait… I’d get with Evan and Barty and then our friendship would be over. I am toxic and petty and a Sirius kin can you tell. Any fic where Sirius is cool with it is an unrealistic fic in my eyes. Jegulus and/or Moonseeker is already stretching it but both his best friends? Nah.

Actually leaping off from that, a lot of fics these days do a bad job establishing why James and/or Remus would care about Regulus and instantly be in love with him. Especially in universes where Sirius hates Reg and Reg/Reg’s friends hate Sirius. I feel like earlier Jegulus fics did a much better job before it became an assumed dynamic.

I don’t think you should be writing Regulus & Sirius dynamics in fics if you don’t have empathy for both and aren’t willing to show both of their POVs. A lot of times it comes across as victim blaming or really weird ideas about victims.

I sort of get what you mean, I think it's become very accepted that James cares about Reg because of his large heart and he understands his abuse and manipulation but like...it's so accepted that it gets really rushed bc people just want to get to the fun bit (which like me too)

YES people who blame one of them, be it intentional or not, really annoy me bc it comes through in your writing, and I prefer Reg just as a character I write but THAT DOESN'T MEAN I BLAME SIRIUS FOR ALL THE SHIT THAT HAPPENED TO HIM it doesn't make for a cool plot point, it's just creepy. Honestly my whole page is on the treatment of the black family and dumbledore's ignorance towards it so I feel very strongly about this one, same goes for people who use Andy as a catalyst for Cissa to cry into Alice/Lucius/whoever's arms because they never treat her like an actual person

Lily and Remus would perhaps be best equipped to understand how dangerous Regulus might be, Remus for the reasons you mentioned and Lily because she gets having a toxic relationship with your sibling, she knows loving your sibling does not automatically mean that the relationship is good and healthy (she even knows that one sibling loving the other doesn’t mean it’s reciprocated). Part of the sourness from Petunia was that Lily had this special gift but Petunia didn’t, and there’s no guarantee Regulus wouldn’t resent Sirius for being the heir while Regulus is the spare by crime of birth; of course, Lily does not have the necessary background on the House of Black to truly understand what Regulus might be capable of, she might heard some rumors and maybe a couple offhand mentions from Sirius, but she has no idea the full scope of the family’s unhinged-ness, and there’s nobody who can tell her. The Marauders have no true interaction with the Blacks outside of Sirius and perhaps view Sirius in a better light than he truly should be seen in; I doubt James’s parents would tell James the more horrifying rumors about the Blacks when his best friend is a Black, and Peter and Remus are both half-bloods, it’s doubtful their magical parents had the necessary exposure to the Blacks’ circle to learn what might be going on with the family currently. Anyone at the school that’s actually close to the Blacks, who know what the family is like and how that impacts how Regulus will interact and view Sirius’s friends (who Regulus blames for Sirius being a blood-traitor/on the path of being considered one [can one be viewed as a blood-traitor and then come back?]), aren’t people that Lily can speak to, since they share Regulus’s blood supremacy views. She can hardly swan up to Evan Rosier/Rabastan Lestrange/whoever and say, “Hey, wanna tell me all the nitty-gritty details of the Black family? I’m concerned about what Regulus will do”

Oo, yes, Lily is uniquely positioned to have an accurate read on Regulus (and she's going to be integral to this narrative). I love the Lily-Petunia Sirius-Regulus parallels so much, honestly (it's part of what really drew me into Regulily). There's the jealousy aspect, the fact that Lily was the special one for her magic and Sirius special for being the heir, and then there's also the sense of loss. Lily leaves Petunia for a boarding school that Petunia is not allowed to go to. Petunia wants to go with Lily and isn't accepted. I think at that point her bitterness was as much about feeling abandoned by Lily as it was about feeling jealous. And Sirius, too, goes where Regulus cannot follow: to the Potters (to be fair, Regulus didn't try to go with Sirius like Petunia did, but for his own reasons he cannot follow).

I also think that Lily's connection with Snape would give her some insight into the Black family. Of course, Snape has a negative bias against the Blacks (because of Sirius and, I imagine, because they're the type to pull rank and I'm sure that rankles). That combined with the fact that Lily is muggle-born and can't afford to play games with the future Death Eaters of Britain means that she's probably the most cautious of the lot of them around Regulus. Still vulnerable, in her own way, but she understand the potential danger that Regulus poses.

But *sigh* James really should know better. Out of all of them, he really should know what he's dipping his toes into when he gets involved with Regulus. He is the pureblood from an old wizarding family, he has the most exposure to that world and what it looks like, but his worldview is so narrow that it leaves him vulnerable.

NAH, because imagine the whole au:

it’s early 1980, and voldemort and his death eater’s are gaining power rapidly and the order can’t do anything, really, so it’s a losing fight. they’ve lost fab and gid, and benjy, and derk and marlene; remus is literally tearing himself apart trying to spy on the pack, sirius is becoming more and more suspicious, peter is scarce, lily is going insane after losing her best friend (marlene), and dorcas has failed to keep contact and has gone off the deep end— all while they’re trying to find a way to end voldemort. MEANWHILE, evan has been killed by moody, barty is barely hanging on, and at this point, pandora and xeno have fled england, in hopes of finding a safe haven in italy— and THAT’S when regulus discovers the horcruxes. when everything (including a almost decade long friendships) are falling apart.

it’s also when voldemort decides he wants james and lily dead.

so, regulus get’s to work. he researches and writes down everything he knows, packs up his life, and goes to convince james and lily to run away. all while convincing himself the only reason for helping them is, “just for sirius”, and “they’re both smart so they can help”. he fakes his death. and three weeks later, when james and lily don’t make it home after an order meeting, everyone assumes the death eaters got them.

they have a funeral for them, they mourn. voldemort goes along with it, so people think he’s won— and he starts his new world. there’s conflict everywhere. sirius and remus lay low, at order head quarters with the rest of the members; mary has it out with dumbledore, frank and alice are forced to raise baby neville at headquarters, peter’s betrayal comes to light and they send him off, or whatever, while barty flees to find pandora in italy.

BUT, regulus, james and lily are living in france, in the villa that he spent childhood summers in. and it’s tense at first, but eventually he explains— and they all get to work. soon enough, while traveling through france, pandora, xeno and barty come across them; and also agree to stay with them. lily would have harry, and he’d have an army of people to raise and love him— lily is “mama”, james is “dada” and regulus is affectionately dubbed “papa”, and everyone else “auntie/uncle”.

then, a year or so later, order headquarters are discovered and all the members are forced to flee— sirius, remus, mary and dorcas conveniently deciding to go to france, where sirius promises a safe haven.

only to discover all their dead friends (and enemies, and siblings) alive, well, AND raising the child that’s prophesied to defeat voldemort.

and, after ALL of THAT is kind resolved (as much as it can be anyway), they all work together before sneaking back into england and horcrux hunting together to defeat voldemort.

(james and regulus 100% dated during their sixth year, before regulus broke up with james knowing he’d be better off with lily. lily would obviously be established, and mostly like it was in canon— however, jegulily would be more like enemies to lovers, in the sense that they’re not enemies, per se, but james and lily (especially lily, because, yk, she doesn’t really know regulus or the fact that he didn’t believe in blood supremacy) definitely have a bit of contempt towards regulus, and regulus is definitely jealous of lily).

and obviously wolfstar, except during the beginning they were broken up and separated due to remus’ part in the order and sirius’ own suspicion. so, they’d have the second chance trope.

and, MAYBE, MAYBE, dorcas/mary— because they could 100% relate in the fact that marlene was their first love; and i see it more as a platonic thing but it has potential to be romantic.

Difficult times

The day was supposed to be good. Y/n was going to just 'exist' through all the lessons and then enjoy a date with her boyfriend, Remus. But apparently, the date was canceled.

"I do not always have to be right!" Y/n disclaimed, when Remus accused her of not being able to take being wrong.

It all started with just a discussion about homework. Y/n made a mistake, but she was certain about being right. After all, Remus turned out to be right, but Y/n's pride didn't let her accept it.

"I'm not saying that," Remus argued, "I'm just stating you're pathologically incapable of being wrong."

Being a Black meant that you're a drama queen with anger issues. And this comment angered Y/n so much. Everyone would say she was exaggerating, probably even she knew that, but it wasn't Y/n-like to admit it.

"Well, if that's true, why don't you break up with me?" The girl crossed her arms.

A moment of silence fell between the couple. Y/n was looking straight into her soon-to-be-ex boyfriend's eyes.

"You know what? We should take a break. I love you, but I can't be with you if you don't stop acting like...this."

Y/n smirked, thinking Remus is joking, but after a second she understood he was serious.

"So that's it? This is the end?" The girl asked, not believing or not wanting to believe what has just happened. "We're breaking up over a stupid homework?"

"No. We're breaking up, because being with you is draining. I'm sorry, Y/n, I really am."

"Fine. Go back to my blood traitor of a cousin and his idiot friends." And there she pulled out the pureblood supremacy card. She could swear she wasn't like her family, she had nothing against muggleborns nor half-bloods. If she did, she wouldn't date Remus, not only he was a half-blood but also a werewolf. But when Y/n was angry, she felt as if someone else was taking control of her and she was just watching everything from a third person view.

Days went by and Y/n and Remus didn't seem to be getting back together. Sirius, James and Peter hated Y/n, Remus told them that 'it's all good', but it didn't do much.

One evening Y/n was hanging out with Regulus at the Clock Tower Courtyard. They were playing wizard's chess, but Sirius' sudden arrival interrupted them.

"What're you doing here and where have you lost your goons?" Y/n asked mockingly as Regulus sent Sirius a cold stare.

"I knew you could be a bitch, it runs in the family," Sirius stated, "but I'll never forgive you for hurting Moony."

"I'm not asking for forgiveness. Could you go now, or do I need to hex you?"

After that evening, a little war started between the Marauders and Y/n. Remus tried to stop it or at least calm it down, but the boys didn't want to stop and Y/n didn't even want to talk to Remus.

At some point, Y/n got a boyfriend just to play with Remus' feelings. She was spiteful and wanted him to regret breaking up with her.

Y/n's new boyfriend was Evan Rosier, Regulus' best friend and one of Death Eater wannabes. As soon as other students found out about their relationship, the gossips didn't have an end. Everyone was very much convinced Y/n went dark and was going to eventually get the dark mark. Damn, some people said that she had already got it. Y/n didn't want to neither confirm nor decline any of rumors.

The Marauders often caught Remus looking at Y/n in the Great Hall. They tried to distract him every time, but it was a difficult job. Poor boy just couldn't believe it. Y/n was so sweet, so pure, he loved her. And when they broke up, she turned into a different person. Not only personality-wise but also her appearance was changed. Her y/e/c eyes were once bright, Remus could stare into them for hours. Now, they looked darker and tired, as if they were asking for help.

'Is Evan treating her right?' was a question Moony often asked himself and a question he hoped the answer for would be "yes" and Y/n's tired eyes were an outcome of late night studying. Remus didn't want bad things to happen to Y/n, even if she didn't love him anymore or ever at all.

Months later, Y/n and Remus still weren't even talking. After they graduated from Hogwarts, they went different ways and lost any contact with each other at all.

Everyone's lives were in ruins. Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters were attacking a lot. They wanted to control everything and they would do anything to succeed.

1979 was especially difficult for Y/n. She had nobody. Evan left her. Her parents disowned her once she told them she didn't want to have anything to do with their blood purity views. Regulus went on a mission to destroy a horcrux of Voldemort and died. Y/n spent months crying and she had no one to help her. Voldemort found out she's against him and it was obvious he will kill her. One of her sisters would gladly do it, another one wouldn't stop the first one. The third sister got disowned as well as Y/n, but the girl didn't want to ask Andromeda for help. She had a daughter, Nymphadora, it would be so irresponsible to put the family in danger.

So there she was, by herself, all alone, in a tiny apartment in some area of London. Each day Y/n regretted not apologizing to Remus. Things would be so different, maybe they could even save Regulus with the help of James' parents, like they did with Sirius. Why did Y/n have to be so full of herself? If she just tried to change, she could have a much better life. Anything would be better than hiding in some dark, moldy flat like a damn criminal.

There wasn't a day when Remus didn't think about Y/n. Where was she? What was she doing? Was she safe? Did she need help? Did she work for Voldemort? He would pay millions of galleons to just know an answer to one of these questions and any amount of money to have her around. To have her here, in a flat he shared with Sirius.

She would be safe there, Remus would protect her. He wished he could protect her from every possible danger. After all these years, he still missed her. Maybe he just had an idealized image of Y/n stuck in his head, but he was so in love with her still.

Remus was happy with his friends around, but there was an empty place in his heart that Y/n would perfectly fit in. Sirius tried to make him start going on dates, but Remus refused. He considered Y/n his first and only love, Sirius couldn't understand it no matter how hard he tried.

"Hey, could you open the door?" Sirius asked, hearing banging on the door. "It's probably James and Lily."

The newlyweds were supposed to visit Remus and Sirius. Sirius recently found out how much fun it is to cook without using magic and wanted to show off his skills on a dinner.

Remus quickly got up from the sofa in the living room and walked to the door. What, or rather who, he saw when he opened the door, shocked him.

Y/n was standing in the doorway. Her left hand on her stomach, blood on her hoodie and both hands. Her hair was a mess and her face was dirty.

Y/n didn't think she'll see her ex boyfriend that she still had feelings for. She was told to apparate here. Y/n had a mix of many feelings inside her, but had to ignore them for now.

"Are you going to let me in?" She asked harshly.

"Yes, yes." Remus quickly replied and helped the girl walk inside and lay down on the sofa.

She looked tragically, Remus wasn't sure what to do. He pulled up Y/n's hoodie enough to look at the bleeding wound. It wasn't very deep, but it was big and looked, well, serious.

"Sirius, come here!" Remus shouted.

"Hey, the stag family is- what the hell is Y/n doing here?" Sirius asked pretentiously, before he noticed Y/n's injury. When he did, he changed the tone of his voice. "What happened?"

"I'll tell you later! Could someone please stop me from bleeding?" Y/n bellowed.

"Don't you have your wand?"

As a reply, Y/n pulled it out. Well, a half of it. The girl didn't know if she should look for a way to fix it or just go buy a new one, but it wasn't the most important thing right now.

Once Y/n's wound had been taken care of, she sat in the kitchen with the rest, telling them the whole story. Remus had much knowledge about treating injuries, thanks to being a werewolf.

James and Lily were surprised to see Y/n, James even thought she might be sent there on a Death Eater mission.

"I was trying to finish the business Regulus started." Y/n explained, her hands on the table as she fiddled with her fingers.

"Wait, what business?" Sirius asked curiously.

"He found out the Dark Lord made horcruxes, it's an object of your choice that holds a part of your soul, so you can be immortal. To make one, you have to kill someone. We have no idea how many the Dark Lord made, but Regulus found one."

"But my brother is dead. And I've always thought he supported Vold-" He didn't get to finish the sentence, as Y/n stopped him.

"Don't say that name, it has some hex put on it. It locates everyone who says his name."

"Okay, then can you tell us how Regulus died?"

Tears appeared in Y/n's eyes. It's been a few months since he died, the pain of loss was still in Y/n. She was still grieving.

She went through the denial phase, when Kreacher told her everything that happened in the cave. Then anger came, Y/n felt so helpless, so frustrated, she hated herself for not going with Regulus to the damn cave. Then barging, because what if she did go with him? He would be safe and alive. What if she went instead of him? What if she did something so that nobody had to go? They could run away, but then there would be nobody to destroy the horcruxes. Currently, Y/n in the stage of depression, where she barely slept or ate, spending a lot time crying. She's never felt more lonly. The next stage to come was acceptance, but Y/n didn't think she could ever accept Regulus' death. He was like a younger brother to her.

"One of the horcruxes is a locket of Salazar Slytherin, it was hidden in a cave. Reg went there to get it, he was with Kreacher the house elf. When inferi attacked him, he ordered Kreacher to come to me. With the information that Reg wasn't coming home."

Tears were rolling down Y/n's face, which wasn't dirty anymore. After taking care of the wound, Remus helped the girl clean up. He also gave her clean clothes.

"Is the locket still in the cave?" Lily asked, since Sirius was quiet.

Sirius understood his brother was on the good side. Regulus wanted to fight Voldemort, he died trying to kill Voldemort. Regulus died a hero. Sirius would never forgive himself for all the years he spent hating Regulus, insulting him. Regulus did more than Sirius, Remus, James, Peter and Lily and probably the rest of the Order together.

"No, it's not." Y/n reached to her bra, to take the Slytherin's locket out of it. She put it on the table, everyone's eyes were on it. "I tried to destroy it, I went to the woods. Nothing works for it, I tried every spell possible. I even tried hitting it with rocks!"

"But why did you get injured?" Remus asked. He looked at Y/n to see her eyes were also looking at him.

"I said the Dark Lord's name. That's how they found me. Do you know who came to kill me? My very own sister, Bellatrix."

"Your sister wanted to kill you?"

Remus was surprised. He knew from Sirius' stories that Bellatrix was crazy, but he didn't think she would try to kill her own sister. Well, turns out Bella was ready to do anything to get Voldemort's attention.

"Pretty much. She made me fall over, my wand snapped, I was defenceless. She used some spell that gave me the wound on my stomach, then she tortured me with cruciatus. I was lucky though, because McKinnon found us. I was told to apparate to this address while she fought Bellatrix."

Everyone sat in silence thinking about Y/n's story. That was much shock for one day. Lily and James came to eat dinner with Sirius and Remus, but ended up finding very important information. The most shocking thing was that Regulus was actually a good person and he would live if anyone helped him get out of the Voldemort business.

"So, my brother didn't support Vol- You-know-who?" Sirius asked in a whisper.

"No, but do you know who does?" As Y/n said it, all eyes were on her. "Pettigrew. He was on their little meetings, he has the dark mark and all that."

Lily stood up from the table.

"James, let's go, we have to tell someone about it."

Both James and Sirius got up.

"I hate him. I'm going to kill him. This fucking traitor." Sirius cursed and stormed out of the room.

"No, Padfoot," James tried to stop him, "he has to go to prison."

But words were pointless, Sirius didn't stop, he was full of anger. And hatred towards Peter.

Lily and James ran out of the house after Sirius, leaving Y/n alone with Remus.

"I can't believe that." Remus gulped. "He had been a literal rat all this time."

"I'm so sorry." Y/n looked at Remus. She was still so much in love with him.

Everything in her wanted to kiss him, but she didn't know if he still even likes her. What if he found someone else? He didn't seem to be married, but he could have a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend.

"No, I'm sorry. Everyone thought you and Regulus were working for...You-know-who."

"That's not surprising." Y/n chuckled. "At some point we were, I just haven't got my dark mark yet. We had to be close to him to be able to destroy him. Didn't go very well. But I still have a chance."

"We'll help you, the whole Order will help. Do you realize how much important information you gave us?"

"Thank you." The girl smiled, but soon the smile was replaced by a sudden yawn.

"Oh, you should probably have a nap. The bed in my room is pretty comfortable, if you'd..."

"Thanks, the sofa will be enough. I don't want to be a problem."

Y/n took a nap on the sofa in the living room under the softest and warmest blanket ever. Remus smiled, as he tucked her in. He wasn't in love with an idealized image of Y/n. He was in love with the Y/n in front of him. After hearing what she had been through, he felt like he loved her even more.

Lily, James and Sirius were back by the late evening. It was completely dark outside. The sound of the door being opened woke Y/n up. She felt much better after the nap.

"We told the Order everything," Lily announced, "Dumbledore wants to talk to you, when you feel ready."

"Okay, thank you. What's up with McKinnon? Is she okay? I'd never forgive myself if something happened to her." Y/n asked, hint of worry in her voice.

"Yes, Marlene is all good. She helped capture Bellatrix."

Y/n smiled. Sirius walked up to her and put and hand on her shoulder.

"Thank you for...well, everything. Thank you for helping Reg all this time and-"

"You're welcome." Y/n stopped her cousin from finishing the sentence. She didn't need to cry once again.

Remus looked at the three of his friends. He wanted them to leave the room, so he could talk to Y/n privately. They understood and left the living room.

Y/n was sitting on the sofa, still wrapped in the blanket. Remus sat next to her and assuringly took her hand in his. He was glad she was there.

"So um..." the girl started, "do you live with Sirius alone or does someone else live here? Like, I don't know, maybe someone you're, you're, romantically interested in or..."

Remus chuckled at Y/n's not so secret way of asking if he's single. She was so adorable when nervous.

"Yes, there's this girl I really like. She doesn't live here, but I hope she'll move in soon." Remus announced with a smile on his face.

Y/n's face saddened. She expected Remus to get in a new relationship, she acted like a bitch to him a few years ago, but it was still kind of upsetting.

"Oh, really?" Y/n asked.

"Yes," Remus beamed, "she's very intelligent and very beautiful. And she's sitting on this sofa right now."

Y/n understood Remus was talking about her. A slight smile immediately appeared on her face. Without a word, she kissed him. He kissed her back without hesitation. Sure, their lives were in ruins because of the war, but now that they had each other, sun was shining bright above these ruins.

They knew future will be better. They felt it. They would kill Voldemort, make the world a safe place for them, their friends and their families. Deep down they knew everything that happened was fate and someday they were going to be happy. Together.

A/N: Ok this is what I came up with. It's not exactly slowburn and it's kinda short, but I still hope you like it. Btw, please forgive me if its unlike my other works, I've been researching for the past 26 hours, and I'm tired as shit, I'm barely human at this point. Also, thank you so much for requesting!

Arranged marriages. There is a certain negative connotation attached to the term, at least that’s what Y/N Y/L/N believed. And she had a right to believe so, given that she was betrothed to Sirius Black out of all people. Sirius "Loud Tosser" Black.

Although she had no say in the matter, her parents extended the courtesy of informing her that the engagement was meant to maintain blood purity. But she didn’t have to like it. Especially when she had no interest in supporting the buffoonery of pureblood supremacy.

Sirius was in a similar predicament. He was given no choice; his life was not his to dictate. All because of something as stupid as blood purity. And on top of that, he had to marry Y/N Y/L/N. "Female- Regulus" Y/N Y/L/N.

Despite the nicknames, Sirius and Y/N did not dislike each other. How could they, when they didn’t even know each other? Of course, they knew of each other. But knowing of someone and knowingsomeone, are vastly different matters.

Sirius didn’t know her favourite book, he wasn’t even aware she enjoyed reading. Y/N didn’t know his favourite colour, nor that he exclusively sketched using different shades of it.

There was someone who knew all of those things. Regulus Black. Being Sirius' brother, and Y/N's best friend; Regulus knew all the information the positions required.

He knew Y/N’s favourite book was The Chronicles of Narnia, because as an only child, an adventure with siblings was her biggest wish.

He knew that contrary to popular belief, Sirius' favourite colour was actually yellow, because it reminded him of the sunflowers in James Potter’s house.

And because he knew them so well, he was sure they would be perfect together.

He knew Sirius was touch starved, and loved to be held. He knew Y/N was a physical being that solved everything with a hug. He knew Sirius actually enjoyed giving compliments, and that Y/N needed constant reassurance.

Regulus was convinced a date was all it would take for them to fall madly in love. Only a date would suffice, if they gave happiness a chance. After all, they were natural complements. However, above all, they were the most stubborn people to have ever lived.

Their resolutions would not bend, and their prides would take no hit. They had already formed an idea of the other, and would not listen to reason. If he wanted to set them up, he would have to employ force. Luckily, the strong arms and mind of Remus Lupin were happy to help.

Locking them up together was an easy task. Their pride led them to believe no one could ever trick them. Y/N was convinced the shy presence that was Remus Lupin could do no evil. And of course, Sirius was certain sweet little Regulus could never design a deceitful scheme.

A successful scheme I may add. Lupin and Regulus did not only lock them up with each other. Y/N and Sirius also found themselves accompanied by a box. A box that spoke of their identities.

For Sirius, there was a sketchbook, Mrs. Potter’s blueberry tarts, and a pack of cigars. His passion, his home, and his vice.

For Y/N, a book, a mirror and a broom. Her hobby, her flaws, and her desire to run.

And just as predicted, they fell hard.

Sirius couldn’t believe he once thought her a female Regulus. Yes, she liked to read; but unlike Regulus, she didn’t do it for the knowledge. She did it for the adventures in places that were too far away for her broom to reach. And she was so self-aware, conscious that vanity could be dangerous.

She was beautiful, and colorful, and meaningful. She was pure stimulation to his artist heart.

Y/N couldn’t believe she ever thought of Sirius Black as a tosser. The term was too plain, too rough. He was not like that. Sirius was incredibly sensitive, and brave enough to express his emotions through art. He chose his family by the loyalty of their hearts.

He was captivating, and soft, and true. He was the refuge for her adventurous explorations.

Regulus had been right. But he is proud, and she is proud. They each went their own way, pretending everything was fine; although they could feel the fragility of their hearts.

Sirius lost inspiration. How could he produce art, when he didn’t remember what art was? His artist heart stopped beating. He had tasted the effects of her presence and nothing else could revive him.

Y/N was the same. Adventures had no appeal when she had no one to share them with. They didn’t matter when there was no home to return to. No him to return to.

The wedding day arrived, but their gloomy moods remained. Regulus understood. No matter how much they craved each other, going through with the wedding meant validating their families’ supremacist claims. The Houses of Black and Y/L/N would not be united that day. Regulus knew that.

But they didn’t know he knew.

They stumbled upon each other as they tried to flee. One look was all it took. They knew what they wanted to do, what their hearts needed them to do.

The Houses of Black and Y/L/N did not unite. But Sirius did marry Y/N. Far away, in a chapel in Wales.

The excuse that Regulus was brainwashed is pathetic because, if that’s the case, then we can excuse Walburga and Orion and literally every single other pure-blood supremacist in the series because these beliefs were passed down from generation to generation. Were they all brainwashed and therefore not responsible for their actions?

Refusing to believe that people are beneath you and should be ostracised from society at best or killed at worst based on their parentage is not something that is hard to understand as wrong and abhorrent. The Weasleys are proof of that, so are the Potters and so are Sirius and Andromeda, his own brother and cousin.

I also HATE the argument that Sirius had a support system to guide him away from his beliefs while Regulus had none. SIRIUS DID NOT NEED HIS FRIENDS TO TELL HIM BLOOD SUPREMACY WAS WRONG, HE KNEW IT HIMSELF! We see him wanting to defy his family BEFORE he’s sort in Gryffindor and before he befriended James, Remus and Peter. Stop insulting and diminishing his intellect and character.

people who say "sirius should've stayed intead of running away!" (usually the regulus stans) don't understand a single thing about sirius' character and it shows.

fundamentally, sirius doesn't exist for the benefit of/to please others. he exists for himself. he cares about himself, his closest friends (mostly james), and his godson. that's about it. don't bring regulus into this. "his little baby brother" said brother is literally half of the reason sirius got sick and left. because he couldn't stand all the blood purity mania.

stop infantilizing and woobifying regulus. if sirius was morally sound enough to know that blood purity was bad, regulus should've known better than to willingly believe that shit. the fact that he didn't - and continued to believe in said blood purity to the point of willingly joining a terrorist organization dedicated to cleansing the wizarding world of "blood traitors" - is not sirius' responsibility.

Most Jegulus fic I've came across having the typical trope that Sirius had no idea about his brother and his best friend f*cking each other behind his back till it revealed unexpectedly and James and Sirius had a big fight that almost broke their friendship. But I'd like to think in a very different path: Sirius already figured out himself but he pretended to be oblivious because he wanted to see how long it'd have taken for James to tell him.

Imagine how internally amused Sirius was as watching James do all those dumb stuff to cover his ass and failed so miserably, but he still had to pretend to believe in all his lame ridiculous excuses (because god forbid, James Potter is a terrible liar). Sirius would be a little disappointed that James had to go through all those troubles just to lie to him (but then he remembered he hadn't told James about him and Remus either so he got over it). I don't think Sirius would be mad like according to lots of fic, "James's dating with a pureblood supremacy future Death Eater", because despite what he said or felt about his family and Regulus's decision to stand by them, Sirius loved his little brother. And he loved and understood James, James's not just Sirius's best friend, he's also his brother too, his family, his other half, his platonic soulmate. So no, he's not gonna judge or be mad. But he'd just be sad and even worried, because knowing both of them, he already knew it's not gonna be lasted.
