The Illusion of Truth - The World of Shipping

The illusion of Truth - repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth. That is a law of propaganda often attributed to the Nazi Joseph Gobl. Among psychologists something like this is known as the illusion of truth effect. The idea is repetition! 

We see this so often in the world of shipping. Especially with our neighbors and their perceived relationship status between Jungkook and Taehyung.

If you reinforce something over and over again you start to believe it even if goes against the most fundamental truth. This strategy was actually reinforced by hitler himself in his 1925 autobiographical manifesto. He observed that most people are only comfortable telling small lies because of this Hitler believes that when something big is claimed we tend to believe it because we ourselves can’t imagine that someone would be telling such a big lie. 

In the manifesto Hitler said that it would never come into our heads to fabricate colossal untruths and we would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.  

Even though facts which prove the actual truth may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.  This is clearly seen in the case of Jikook. Facts are clearly out there, but the neighbors discount each and every one of them. They can’t fathom there is a close and personal bond between Jimin and Jungkook. They think any and every interaction must be fanservice, because they have been sold that bill of goods, opps I mean that illusion of reality. They even think enlisting together is fanservice. Again, there has to be some explanation to explain the bond of Jimin and Jungkook. There is no way they are in a relationship, in their minds it means if jikook is real, their ship of Taehyung and Jungkook are not in a relationship, but just friends. Jikook destroys what they have believed all these years.

The illusion of reality convinces people that the truth that we see, hear, feel or touch are NOT TRUE by just repeating and saying something so ridiculously UNTRUE that it’s so hard to believe anyone would even dare say it. 

Back to shipping, we know all shippers put forth theories, evidence, and proof of their supposed ship. Many keep it surface level and fun. However, some take it so far that they hurt the subject(s) of their ships or those they feel threaten that ship. We see this with some of the fans of Taehyung, Jimin and Jungkook. We see hate campaigns based on edited videos, false narratives, and outright lies. Then these lies are repeated so often that many believe them in part because it supports their belief and because people don’t or won’t take the time to verify or validate such lie(s). This process is nothing but the use of propaganda which can result in cult like behavior. 

Unfortunately, we have twitter accounts and YouTubers who promulgate these lies and narratives for views and monetization of their channels. Others promote these lies with the expressed intent upon hurting and threatening people such as Jimin and to a lesser extent Jungkook.  We saw this last year with the hate campaign towards Jimin and Jungkook when they traveled to Japan along with the hate letters to the Defense Ministry of SK.

The YouTube channel “Asian Entertainment and Culture” posted an excellent video today called “Dirty PR & Marketing Tricks Used to Destroy JHope & Other Idols”. the bulk of my comments above as it relates to the Illusion of Reality came directly from her video. She was not addressing shipping, but the smear campaign against JHope and Jungkook because a group of fans want Scooter Braun removed from Hybe and also to smear Jungkook’s collaboration with Usher who they say has supported Israel. However, everything she addressed in her video also applies to the world of shipping and we so clearly see what she is talking about in this world. 

After all these paragraphs of words above, if you don’t get anything out of what I said, try and recognize when you see “The Illusion of Reality”.  Validate and verify the best you can what you are being fed or consuming. Watch full content and not just edited clips, read reputable articles from reputable sources. Watch various YouTubers and look at how they present information. Are they using reputable sources? Are they presenting facts or opinions? Are they serving up their own narrative to support their channel? Is the analysis based on facts or innuendos, half truths or outright lies? Be a critical thinker and not just parrot the illusion of reality.

Fans of the K-pop boy band BTS are calling on the group’s management company to remove the head of its North American subsidiary after accusing him of backing Israel in its ongoing war on Gaza.  Calls for the sacking of Scooter Braun, CEO of Hybe-America, come as part of a wider movement among K-pop fans to draw attention to the plight of Palestinians in Gaza. On 23 February, some fans sent a truck to the headquarters of Hybe in central Seoul, urging the company to divest from “Zionism and Zionists in the industry”, according to the Korea Times.  A screen on the truck displayed several demands alongside clips of the devastation in Gaza. One video appears to show BTS merchandise found among the rubble, with a caption reading: “They could’ve been your friend.” "If our demands are not met, ARMY [BTS fans] will continue to push for you to meet our demands. Do not look away when the same thing that happened to your Korean ancestors is happening to Palestinians,” the message displayed on the truck added.  “We ask that you stand for humanity, for the right side of history and against violence.”

In a letter-writing campaign directed at Hybe, fans accuse Braun of making comments or posts on social media that legitimise Israel’s violence in Gaza or obfuscate the realities of Palestinians living under occupation.  In December of last year, Braun spoke at a rally in Tel Aviv calling for the return of Israeli captives who were taken by armed Palestinian groups during the 7 October attacks on southern Israel, in which over 1,100 Israelis were killed.  “I had to come and stand with my people,” he is quoted as saying. Hybe distanced itself from Braun's comments at the time, according to reports, saying: "It is a personal statement that is separate from company management." The label has not made any further comments.

Knowing what we now know about Justin Bieber's experiences in the beginnings of his musical "career", and knowing that Scooter is credited with discovering him, my question is this: Did Scooter know what P Diddy was doing to Justin, when he was 15 years old?

When people wonder why I have such a STRONG opinion about Scooter Braun, it is because he is connected to some very dark energies and people in the music business, here in the US.

To think that Jungkook spent any time around him makes me cringe.

The whole system in K-Pop is set up to disempower the artists and to empower their management and labels. When a creep like Scooter is given so much power in that system, it can lead to some really yucky stuff, for the artists. And for the management (who get entangled in the web that people like Scooter weave, to control them), it can be a really difficult situation to remove themselves from. If you know anything about the P Diddy stuff, or the Harvey Weinstein stuff, then you know what I am referring to.

People like Justin and even Brittany Spears are prime examples. They enter the music/entertainment industry as young teens, with no ability to discern or understand what they are presented with. Especially when that dark side of the industry is so well hidden (except when it isn't). It is so freaking sad, what they went through then and what they continue to go through, post-trauma as adults.

This is why I feel as I do regarding BTS or any other K-Pop artist who steps into the music industry here in the US, and gets tangled up with the likes of Scooter and others. I cringe.

Again as I have said in a recent blog post, I am really glad that the guys (Bangtan) are sequestered away in the military (with the exception of Jin's discharge next week!). Especially Jungkook. He had BIG stars in his eyes and such a deep desire and drive to succeed here in the West, last year. I honestly don't think that he really knows just how dark things are, in the industry. Most people here in the States don't know, so I would not expect people in other countries to know, either. Once you know and see, you cannot forget or unsee.

Sometimes I think about what the guys could do after they are discharged, that could free them from the entanglement. As long as they continue to sign the dotted-line of contracts with HYBE, they will be entangled.

Sometimes I think they forget that they have the right to determine their own fate, as Individual Human Beings.... As Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Kim Namjoon, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jungkook.... It is certainly not something that is fully encouraged by their management (BTS the cash cow), and honestly it isn't encouraged by the fandom, either. There is so much PRESSURE on them to be BTS, to live and breath for BTS, and to live and breathe for ARMY.

Who knows what the coming years will bring for them. My hope is that they will navigate with their eyes wide open, and with full knowledge and understanding of the results (on all levels) of doing business with the likes of Scooter and those like him. I hope that they always have protection from those who would pull them into a very dark place that would be hard to escape from. I hope that they will be able to manage themselves at company parties, where booze and drugs can lead to some really horrific experiences. I hope that they never ever have to go through what Justin has gone through, or any of the others that have spoken out about the terrible things that go on behind closed doors in the industry.

Yeah. I hope and pray literally every day, for their protection on all levels.

So this little ramble turned into a big one. Sorry not sorry. I know too much at this point in my life's journey to not feel like I do. I just wish I could wave a wand and put protection around BTS, as well as every other innocent artist that steps into the industry. No one deserves what some have gone through. No one.

With this I'll end. As they say, take what works, and leave what doesn't. This is all just a ramble of words that flow from my mind and heart. I simply want a better industry and overall a better world. And, I want those I love to be protected, at all costs.

i’m hoping to get back to updating soon. it’s something i dearly miss and cannot wait to get back to when i have time. ive been putting a lot of my focus lately into not only my last semester of grad school but also into action for palestine. it’s more important to me to invest the little free time i have into doing what i can to push the fight for a liberated palestine. i refuse to sit here and act like everything is okay when millions of people are suffering a genocide.

hybe is complicit in this ethnic cleansing as well whether you want to accept it or not. they’ve allowed scooter braun to have the power and influence to spread zionist propaganda. scooter braun has always shown himself to be a despicable excuse for a human being, and if him being a zionist on top of all of that isn’t enough for you to consider his termination a crucial goal to work toward.. you do not truly care about palestine.

palestine cannot be free if we allow zionism to become normalized. it’s our duty to call it out and shame zionists out of our spaces! they are not and should not be welcome ANYWHERE. which is why i’m one of many moas who have made the decision to BOYCOTT HYBE. i refuse to put money in the pockets of these greedy, capitalist pigs who don’t care about anything but squeezing every penny they can out of fans. it’s not about the music anymore for bighit. all they care about is how much they can get away with because they know we’re willing to spend anything if it means getting content and merch. i don’t want to hurt txt’s comeback, but in my opinion, a comeback isn’t more important than a fucking genocide. plain and simple. i refuse to give hybe any more of my money through streams, album sales, tickets, or merch until they get rid of fuckass scooter braun.

if you don’t want to boycott, that’s fine. that’s your choice and i don’t blame you for not wanting to. as long as you’re doing what you can to help palestine in other ways, i see no shame. but i still do encourage you to consider boycotting as well. if not, but you’re able to buy multiple albums and concert tickets? i think you can also donate to palestinian aid and families as well. i just ask you not say you care about palestine yet do nothing to help their resistance.

that being said: i hope you don’t shame fans who do choose to partake in this boycott, because you need to understand this isn’t an attack on txt or any other hybe group. i’ve seen so many people attack boycotters and accuse us of wanting our idols to fail. it makes my blood boil because that couldn’t be farther from the truth. you must be truly out of touch and thick headed to think this is a personal attack on them. there are more important things than a comeback. especially when one of the songs (the killa) on txt’s new album was produced BY AN “ISRAELI”!! this is what we’re talking about when we say scooter braun is playing a huge role in welcoming zionism to hybe. people are losing their homes, their land, their families, their LIVES.. this is about removing the facilitators of genocide from positions of power in every industry they leech on. and if you somehow can’t seem to understand that, you’re a zionist too. chart positions, views, album sales, whatever are not more important than the liberation of indigenous people. choosing to believe otherwise is cruel and evil, and choosing to argue with us over this makes you no ally to palestine. it makes you complicit to the normalization of zionism which is the primary force in the oppression and dehumanization of palestinian people.

i encourage you to download the songs elsewhere (so many google drive links and free streaming apps exist (for example: musi)). don’t stream the killa. refuse the normalization of zionism. make zionists UNCOMFORTABLE! they don’t deserve to experience peace when palestinians are living in constant fear because of the barbaric attacks by that illegitimate state trying to forcibly steal palestinian land.

Jen Cohn

She is well known for voicing many characters such as Pharah from Overwatch, Ursa (Zuko’s mom) from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Miss Champlain from Wordgirl, and many other roles. On a TikTok and YouTube livestream when many watchers commented “free palestine”, her response to them was “Yes, free Palestine from Hamas.”

There are also more quotes from Cohn such as her response to a comment about wanting a new Pharah voice actor along with the Palestine flag emoji, “That is not a very ‘values of Overwatch’ thing to say” which caused anger from many fans. Cohn has also stated that “Hamas is a terrorist organization, there are so many articles and videos of Gazans risking their lives by speaking out and begging to be free of their terrorist government.”

Hall is well known for voicing Pearl, a character from the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe along with other live action roles for other studios. Although she never stated anything about Israel or Hamas, one of the posts she liked on Twitter was from Mark Hamill, “America stands with Israel ✊ #ALWAYS” which spread on the platform, receiving backlash from SU fans.

Eric Nam

Eric is a K-pop/R&B singer and songwriter based in South Korea who wrote songs under B2M Entertainment. He had many tours over the years as a musician and even acted in television. In a tweet by @DiscussingFilm on April 11, it was announced that he had been cast as adult Aang for the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie set to release around 2025-2026.

This post received backlash from ATLA fans due to posts regarding his involvement with Zionists and support for Israel such as liking a pro-Israel instagram post,

The companies Dive Studios and Mindset (both co-founded by Eric and also his brothers) having investor companies supporting Israel along with Mindset’s strategic investor Scooter Braun also supporting Israel as well as a history of working with celebrities that are pro-Israel, and the fact that he removed Malaysia and The Philippines off of his “House On A Hill” tour list due to backlash by many Malaysian fans for the aforementioned instagram post (Malaysia is against people supporting Israel and is very pro-Palestine.), ignoring the backlash but posted a statement regarding his neutral opinion on the Gaza genocide where the reason was that he “made the difficult decision to cancel the show” in Malaysia.

Noah Schnapp

Schnapp is another well known actor who played characters such as Charlie Brown from the Peanuts Movie by the now-defunct Blue Sky Studios, and Will Byers from Netflix’s Stranger Things.

In a TikTok video, Noah Schnapp is seen sitting and filming with people holding “Zionism is Sexy” stickers, the line “You either stand with Israel or you stand with terrorism.”, along with liking a post that mocked Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as well as his visit to Israel. This had many fans call for a boycott against the 5th Season of Stranger Things or for Noah to be fired from playing Will Byers.

Jeremy Shada

Jeremy is also another well known actor and had many roles like the Cookie Run franchise as Gingerbrave, Adventure Time as Finn the Human, Voltron: Legendary Defender as Lance, Julie and the Phantoms as Reggie Peters, and some others. Many fans were not happy to see that he has been pro-Israel due to an instagram post liked by Shada and so some Finn and Gingerbrave fan art with the Palestine flag were made.

Tara Strong

Tara is the one of the most well known voice actor in the animation industry and had been widely loved for playing many famous characters such as Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls, Raven from Teen Titans (and the reboot), Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Timmy Turner from The Fairly Oddparents, Ilana from Sym-Bionic Titan, and so many other characters she’d played in.

Recently, she was fired from playing the character Bill the Orphan in an adult-animated series called Boxtown due to her negative responses to the Palestinian genocide. She said in a tweet, “Just found out on twitter! This is what happens when you help fans get shows made I guess. Fired for being Jewish. Glad I helped you get your kickstarter money. Please lose my email address & pray for my family in Israel and in Gaza. & #prayforpeace.” Bandit Mill Animation however, has stated this was due to Tara’s controversial tweets.

Speaking of, there are many tweets by Strong that prove this point such as liking posts that are against Islamic people, being pissed off that the BLM movement didn’t stand for a genocide, claiming the IDF doesn’t rape/harm any civilians, making a post with the hashtag #IStandWithIsrael, hiding a reply of the death count between Palestinians and Israeli people, and even more situations outside the Palestinian movement like being an anti-vaxxer, supporting PETA, supporting and directing an “eco-friendly” NFT movie project called Ornamental, supporting Autism Speaks (an organization that claims to “cure” autism.), being in a video where Tara was verbally abusing an Uber driver that was an immigrant along with Rena Sofer by saying “We are Americans, we were born here.”, did nothing when Greg Cipes called asexuality a phase to an asexual in a FMA game he hosted, being racist in response to a news clip of MEMRI (Which is a non-profit organization founded by Yigal Carmon, an Israeli military intelligence officer. MEMRI has been claimed to mistranslate clips so Palestinians would viewed in a bad light.), had a little girl who had a brain tumor pass away due to bronies donating to a charity where the money was instead of real medicine, it was put into “alternative treatments”, AND retweeted Ben 10 incest back in 2012-13.

Tara Strong has really destroyed her own reputation as a voice actor and it’s really upsetting that a famous woman who voiced pretty much everyone’s childhood have such negative ways when dealing with topics like these. The fact that there are STILL fans defending her actions is just depressing to see what she had become.

Benson from the Bee Movie and had his own semi-fictional show named after his last name visited Israel into the IDF military base nicknamed “Camp Shoot-A-Palestinian” (I’M NOT FUCKING JOKING) and played target practice with pictures of REAL Palestinians, made a few pro-Israel posts on his instagram, and more.

Selena Gomez, played Alex Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place, Mavis from the Hotel Transylvania franchise, and many other roles has many posts regarding support to Israel such as liking Amy Schumer’s pro-Israel posts on Instagram, was VERY pissed off when fans asked her for Palestinian support, and lying about the beauty company Rare Beauty supporting Gaza even though the CEO is a Zionist which resulted in the donation money going a Zionist organization called Magen David Adom.

Scarlett Johansson had worked with companies that support Israel over the years along with a couple of posts that are pro-Israel.

Kim Dongyoung, who is a member of a few South-Korean bands as Doyoung like NCT and it’s other sub-units has lost over 800,000 instagram followers because of a McDonalds Korea promotion he was in even though he had donated to World Food Program Korea (a company that started to donate food to Gaza back in December of 2023.).

Taika Watiti, who played Blackbeard from Our Flag Means Death has liked Instagram posts of Gal Godot’s suppport for Israel, went on a big rant about his response to people addressing his silence on Palestinians because of people not knowing about Māori issues on the Marc Macron podcast (Many, Many Māori people are pro-Palestinian.)

Sarah J Maas, author of The Assassin’s Blade, Crescent City, and A Court of Thorns and Roses, is a Zionist that has spoken about her “love for Israel”, said that she was proud of her family members that had been involved with the IDF and its military bases and went on a trip to Israel.

Con O’Neill, who plays Izzy Hands from the show Our Flag Means Death has a liked post by Eve Barlow with the lines of “coming out as a Zionist is harder than coming out as gay”.

Keanu Reeves is another well known actor that appeared in The Matrix franchise as Neo, The Day the Earth Stood Still as Klaatu, Cyberpunk 2077 as Johnny Silverhand, and many other movies. He said that he wanted to make a John Wick movie that take place in Israel with IDF soldiers that trained for stunts, went to a party that was hosted by a former arms dealer during the 2014 Gaza war, and visited Israel several times along with meeting Netanyahu.

Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson books made a very lengthy blog post stating the Israel-Palestine conflict with lines such as “the Israeli government’s brutal retaliation against the entire population of Gaza has reached genocidal proportions.” & “This means security and support for Israel, yes.”

I don't understand what the point of tagging Geffen about this is. He's not some random employee behaving badly, he's literally the head of one of the major divisions of the label. It's like tagging Hybe to remove scooter braun. It yields absolutely nothing. I understand why people do it because it feels wrong to let it slide but I would only consider this whole thing to be a means to spread the message within the fandom to maybe get some mobilisation in people promoting Jimin or getting serious about finding buyers and donations. Geffen has posted about that girl group who debuts the same day as SGMB releases so you know all their energy is gonna go to them. I knew the moment I saw that teaser for it. We really cannot afford to get off track with MUSE but most importantly SGMB since it’s getting 0 promotion and comes out in basically 4 days. We really need to start pushing it ourselves.

Based on what I’ve seen, most Korean fans fall into one of three camps:

1. They think this boycott campaign is the work of multis, mantis, and antis/akgaes;

2. They are somewhat sympathetic and might even want Scooter gone, but still don’t agree with a full boycott;

3. They don’t care.

The reality is a lot of Koreans have no real view about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and of those who do, the split between people for and against either Israel or Palestine seems 50/50, going by the chatter I’ve seen. Among the G20 nations, South Korea and Japan both do not recognize the Palestinian state, and general sentiment in Korea is largely more in line with the government in this case.

A lot of the people pushing for Scooter’s removal on the k-side are akgaes and mantis who have disliked him since he started promoting Jungkook last year, and that bias colours the arguments against him to other people watching this go down. While a few others have genuinely bought into the arguments and want to kick him out in any case.

But one thing that’s generally accepted or understood by most everyone on the k-side, is that kicking him out has more to do with satisfying the desires of that select minority, than doing anything to actually benefit the plight of Palestinians in Gaza.
