Relics of Ruin came out today! Here’s some of my inks for a promo illustration I was commissioned to make by the awesome author, Erin M Evans!
Relics of Ruin is the sequel to Empire of Exiles, and it’s a fantasy mystery series set in a world of intrigue and scheming factions. This world is really interesting and the mystery is an absolute page turner! Erin is also the writer of the Brimstone Angels Saga, which are some of the best D&D novels ever written!
Check out Empire of Exiles and Relics of Ruin, they can be found at any bookstore thru Orbit Books, as well as in ebooks and audiobook!
I hope you’ll check them out because I have more art for this series coming soon, so follow along with me!

Relics of Ruin Review - Secrets Shared and Sharpened
Relics of Ruin Review - Secrets Shared and Sharpened
Relics of Ruin by Erin M. Evans, the second book in Books of the Usurper series does what every second book in a series should do: expands the world, digs deeper into the characters, introduces new information, and builds on what was set up in the first book while raising the stakes with new conflicts.

It’s like having a purebred dog and a possum you found in the dumpster
#snivy#volcarona#pokemon doodles#original art#Specifically remembering the volcarona you could catch in Relic Castle#managed to get the lvl 70 one#Imagine you’re seen as a deity#Chilling in your ruins#and you’re suddenly captured by some kid#now you eat kibble out of a dog bowl and live in a ball#Anyway I just think it’s funny#Bc the starters are only “starters” bc they’re supposed to be like…idk more comfortable with ppl or whatever. More tame#But the moment you leave your hometown you can just start catching real wild animals#Anyway I love my feral volcarona even if it touches a rock and dies#it’s fine

N's Void Cube - Animated Model
For too long, The Pokemon Company has been portraying N's iconic Void Cube with simple gold sides, erasing the beautiful quadrangular symmetry of the gold lines it was designed with. Today, I am stepping up to give N Harmonia's most prized possession the proper representation it deserves.
Here's the design I started with in Blender. I started by tracing the cube in N's official BW art, but making a new one made things so much easier.
If you don't count the center, N's Void Cube is only made of two distinct blocks, just rotated in different directions. The designs on these blocks are pretty cool, and there's actually some symbolism to them!
The first block, the ring/sun, fittingly resembles the classical symbol for the sun ☉ which is also the alchemical symbol for gold. A lot of classical Sun and gold symbols often correspond with symbols for "God", considering our history of solar deities.
This symbol is also known as the circumpunct. It also resembles evil eye protection talismans like the nazar. (I figured this was relevant because of the scary eyes on Ghetsis' cloak!)
The second block, the circle symbol with the floret pointing toward the corner definitely resembles another alchemical symbol for sun, gold, and "God":

So there's definitely a theme here! Documents from the Teraleak suggest that N is the descendant of the ancient king buried in the Abyssal Ruins. Motifs like the sun, gold, and "God" all correlate with kings and the idea of divine right.
In my post "The Original Dragon of Unova and Wuxing" I theorized that the Original Dragon of Unova is based on the Yellow Dragon of the Center, who would be a golden dragon that glows like the sun. And the machine translation for the Abyssal Ruins glyphs depicts a creature with a very Reshiram/Zekrom type body that is "known as God". This glyph is supposed to refer to the ancient king.

Long story short: I think N has the ancient king's Void Cube.

Yinii is a character from @erinmevans’ Books of the Usurper series, and is one of my favorites! I’ve drawn her a bunch but she always changes shape in my mind, but she is such a cool character. If you dig on fantasy and mystery books, check out Empire of Exiles and the brand new Relics of Ruin and see why Yinii is the best!

Every time I think about Lords of Fortune and their cultural sensitivity I have to go 'Don't think about it' like that Portal 2 scene, because I get too invested trying to understand the logic behind it and eventually short circuit.
#like what do you mean you don't steal 'cultural artifacts'? what DO you steal then?#coins? but if they are from old ruins they can be considered an artifact too#do you know how much historical shit we got from coins and what was engraved on them?#do they just hand a couple of coins to the local museum and sell the rest lmao?#jewelry? again it can be considered an artifact if it's old enough#but would people even pay that much for dusty ass jewelry if it was just a generic one with no cultural background or magic in it?#just some loose gems and solid bars of gold? is it even treasure hunting at this point?#like sure you can probably find some scrap or random gold you can sell in ruins but I don't think people usually commission others to do so#my point is what is a non-cultural artifact???#don't get me wrong I can stretch a lot to fit the new lore (you see me do it with crows) but I just can't wrap my head around it#I do like the interpretation of it's just Isabela checking for specifically qunari relics because she's like#'never going through that shit again' but I don't think that's the intended scenario lol#dragon age the veilguard critical#veilguard critical#lords of fortune critical

this is a spinning-circles-in-the-office-chair thought but how did salem find out how the relics work. she knows the lamp has a “password” and a limited number of questions, and that using the staff to create something will destroy its previous creation.
we know she’s never used the lamp before, otherwise she’d have known jinn’s name. it’s possible she had the staff at one point and lost it, although i’m skeptical of ozma’s ability to get it back from her if she did—man is a dreadful strategist. she doesn’t seem to know what the relic of choice is: the lamp, the staff, the sword, and “the beacon relic.”
spins chair.
the way her expression changes when ruby says “we’ve seen what you’re capable of. the lamp showed us.” salem doesn’t react to the interruption in any way until she hears the lamp showed us.
from ironwood, we know that ozpin told the inner circle that the lamp can answer three questions per century and that the questions were all used up before ozpin sealed the lamp in the vault. we also know that ozpin used the staff to raise atlas at a point when ironwood was already part of the inner circle, meaning within the last couple decades, which necessitated giving a similar explanation of what the staff can do and its limitations to the whole inner circle; in v7 ironwood knows the staff can only make one thing at a time.
salem is startled, and then coldly irritated, when she hears ruby say the lamp showed us.
she’s not upset because the girls learned the truth; she’s upset because all the information salem has about the relics came to her via member(s) of ozpin’s inner circle, and ruby just revealed that at least one thing ozpin told his acolytes was a lie. as far as salem knew before that moment, the lamp was dormant. useless to her. when ruby says “the lamp showed us,” both the assertion that the lamp is out of questions and that the lamp only has a finite number of questions it can answer are thrown into question.
given what salem does immediately after getting her hands on the lamp a few hours later…
“the lamp showed us” switches salem’s train of thought to “the lamp is still usable?” and then to “if that’s so, i could ask it questions myself” and then to “we still haven’t uncovered the location of the beacon relic” and she’s only half-listening to what ruby says to her while she turns this over in her mind and what comes out of her mouth is “your mother said those words to me,” because summer rose is the one who told her, per ozpin, that the lamp was all out of questions. “she was wrong, too.”
#imagine the seer call if salem had gotten jinn’s name out of oscar.#hello summer. your daughter informed me that ozpin lied to you about the damned lamp#the crown is locked up in the emerald forest under some ruins be a dear and secure the location won’t you?#cinder and i will be along in a few days.#summer who has been tearing her hair out for like fifteen months trying to find this stupid relic: …please tell oz fuck you from me
