Hi I'm spitting out biology (and a liiiiitle bit cultural) musings more of them. These guys are actually terrestrial holothurians (sea cucumbers). I'm putting my stonks into echinodermata we have to believe in their Powers to evolve new and exciting shapes.

The people who keep symbiotic fish in their tentacles call themselves Anemones, while the ones that reject the fish as parasites and wear shell-like hats over most of their tentacles call themselves Nautilus. In the modern day there is an increasing population of those who consider themselves neither of these things but due to the history of these two cultures there isn't a widely accepted colloquial name for the species as a whole.

They're not cnidarians so they don't possess stinging cells, but they produce a thick venomous mucous from their tentacles that causes paralysis and inflammation on contact for various other animals. They evolved as social ambush predators that would jump on their prey and slather this mucous over them to subdue them. Their ideal diet is like 60% meat and 30% fruits, with bonus whatever the fuck else they feel like eating as a treat.

The venomous mucous may have been what initially started the Nautiluses' practice of covering most of their tentacles, along with protection from the sun and aerial predators. They have a long history as a multi-species people, and keeping contact venom just exposed around your loved ones without resistance to it is just plain dangerous. These days it's more of a visual identification and religious thing though.

These guys don't have real eyes, but are covered in light sensing cells all across their skin. They have shit visual acuity and can't see very far, but they're usually aware of the general silhouette of large objects a few feet around them, and are sensitive to movement. The Anemones, at least, formed a symbiotic relationship with a species of amphibious fish partially due to them being able to see farther and with higher acuity and warn them of things they might not have picked up on by themselves.

There's a lot of in-universe debate over the exact intelligence of the clownfish, but the average seems to be kind of parrot-like, with occasional exceptionally intelligent, probably sapient individuals. They're hard to study, because they're usually extremely shy towards other people, plus Anemones tend to develop a very strong bond with their clowns that skews their perception of what their own fish is capable of. In the modern day the relationship between Anemones and their fish is largely religious rather than out of any real practical necessity; the Anemone religious hegemony considers these fish as one half of a full person, and places an extreme importance on maintaining this relationship. This is usually fine and what ever, but can place Anemones and clownfish alike into difficult situations when the relationship is unwanted or cannot be maintained properly for whatever reason. It's also the reason Anemones and Nautilus have historically considered themselves separate, often rival species; the presence of the clowns or lackthereof have been considered mutually repulsive and a sign of something being deeply Wrong about the other group.

Most terrestrial holothurians are small, trundling insectivores, but there is one large species these guys share a close evolutionary relationship with. The dropbear are solitary, arboreal ambush predators that used to share much of their range with Anemones, but are currently critically endangered in the wild. Anemones, with their very low visual acuity and poor sense of smell, have a very hard time distinguishing dropbears from members of their own species. It's thought the need to tell friend apart from foe is what drove them to develop complex vocal capabilities.

Side note the Example Anemone here is wearing an extremely hastily designed example of traditional Anemone accessories; they didn't have a nudity taboo and actually prefer to keep most of their skin uncovered so they can see, but they enjoyed wearing accessories with tactile or audible elements built into it. Beads were often placed so they'd click together when moving, and combined with knots in the cords were often arranged according to their traditional system of cord "writing" so that people could read each other's clothing.

These guys support themselves on land through an endoskeleton made up of a network of mesodermal ossicles and catch connective tissue. When threatened, they can dramatically loosen their skin and let a predator or perhaps a guy easily tear off whatever part of their body they've grabbed, allowing for an easy getaway with relatively easy wounds to regenerate. This easily gooped skeletal structure does make them very prone to fatigue though. It was fine, because they're ambush predators. They were just supposed to be sitting there most of the day. Please.

I don't really see people talking about how cultural Christianity is applied to Jews.

In Christianity, Jews are the people who rejected and betrayed Jesus and are punished with statelessness and destitution, whose only redemption is accepting the Messiah and the Son of God. This is the basis of several antisemitic tropes, most prominently deception, religious supercessionism and the Wandering Jew.

In cultural Christianity, these tropes are considered tenants of Judaism rather than Christianity, as Judaism is considered Christianity without Jesus.

Christians see themselves as tortured saints, persecuted for spreading the truth of Jesus and God across the globe. Missionaries who go to non-Christian lands to try and get the people to convert by fearmongering with damnation to Hell see themselves as victims when they're rebuffed and asked to stop.

Cultural Christian non-Christians are usually atheists and adherents of folk religion revivalist movements who have suffered religious abuse, as many sects of Christianity normalize emotional abuse by instilling inherent guilt in the Original Sin and even physical abuse in "Spare the rod; spoil the child". These cultural Christians see the millennia of antisemitism and roll their eyes, to them we're just another sect of delusional religious people with a persecution complex.

To become a Christian all you need to do is accept the Father Son and Holy Spirit, to affirm your beliefs and confess your sins. To become a Jew you are either born a Jew, or you learn the Jewish culture and religion for months on end and must live half a year under the strictest restrictions of the Jewish lifestyle to show commitment. That is the difference between a universal religion and an ethnoreligion.

In a Culturally Christian world there is no room for ethnoreligions, and they do not exist. All religions are about your faith and which God(s) you believe in. So in a Cultural Christian's eyes, a country of Jews is a country that holds one faith supreme above all others and conditions rights with conversion, as that's how Christian countries have historically been.

Christianity's common ground with Jews comes from the Roman Empire appropriating the religion from the Cult of Jesus, and making it more appealing to the masses by introducing Greco-Roman and Germanic folk religion aspects into it. Xmas is Yule but with Jesus, Easter is a fertility holiday but with Jesus and so on. In the eyes of the Cultural Christian, Christianity and Judaism are two once-antagonistic sects of the same religion, no different than Catholics and Protestants.

Cultural Christianity erases and appropriates Judaism and is as inherently hateful of Jews as religious Christianity.

Now, when it comes to the elephant in the room: Islam.

Islam, like Christianity, is a universal religion. You must believe in Allah and accept the prophets, which include both Jesus and Muhammad. It is no more inherently violent than Christianity, though it's no less. In the Christian's eyes, Islam is the competitor, the enemy. The Muslims conquered Christian lands and converted them, and they've fought holy wars against one another throughout the Middle Ages.

To become a Muslim the Cultural Christian doesn't need to unlearn any of the core tenets of their culture. They can simply apply it to Islam.

Which is why many Cultural Christians, damaged by Christianity, are sympathetic to Islam. And since Muslims and Jews are no longer on good terms, they use this sympathy to give themselves a free pass to be antisemitic. Whether Muslims check their converts for bigotry, allow it or are powerless to stop them, that's another issue.

Jews are not diet Christians. We have less in common with you than you have with Muslims. Unlearn Christian cultural appropriation.

And no, I don't care that it's "offensive" to associate you with Christianity due to the religious abuse you endured. You still see the world through a Christian lens.

To Ragh; or, On Fatness

Hi! Below is an actual play mini-essay. These are written as part of a personal writing practice of thinking critically about actual play. I hope you find this reading engaging and know that all I write reflects my own interpretations rather than as an official representation/canonization of these shows. Keep reading for my interpretation of Ragh Barkrock's fatness as part of queer representation in Dimension20.

Ragh Barkrock may be one of the most beloved NPCs in Dimension20. It would be easy for Ragh, a bloodrush player good enough to potentially play professionally, to be presented as hypermasculine. In fact, the freshmen year art for Ragh, when he was antagonist rather than beloved ally, showed him in a muscular, inverted Dorito shaped body typical of a jock.

He's, obviously, built, and his cut jaw and cheekbones only bolster that image. As Ragh comes to terms with being gay at the end of Fantasy High, his countenance changes. When we see him again, the new art reflects a chubbier, happier Ragh.

The show aligning weight gain with acceptance and happiness already works against prevailing stereotypes that use weight loss as a quick metaphor for improving yourself and being the "real you." Moreover, connecting Ragh's acceptance of his sexuality with what seems like a larger comfort in his own body is a strong indictment of hypermasculine gay culture. As Gabriel Arana writes, gay men "must reconcile their sense of masculinity with their failure to conform to its heterosexuality." Not doing so has negative mental health outcomes, as Arana points out, and contributes to a culture that devalues fat queer people (see the popular "no fats, no femmes, no Asians" that often is touted in masculine gay subculture).

All of this, I think, is why Ragh's art for Junior Year was particularly impactful for me as a fat queer person. If being a gay man (or half-Orc, in Ragh's case) means having to situate your life in relationship to failing compulsory masculinity, then it seems there is an inherent queer aspect to embracing, celebrating, and showcasing a beloved NPC in an explicitly fat and happy body.

Ragh is still strong and he is still fat. His body radiates a commitment to the power of fat bodies to exist in spaces they are often violently unwelcome in, such as gyms. Existing in gyms and sports spaces as fat people means dealing the "impossible standard that rejects nearly all of us" and upholds a diet culture rooted in impossible, Eurocentric and colonial body standards. In TTRPGS or actual plays, there is a unique opportunity to think about how bodies might exist in worlds different from ours, to imagine bodyminds as otherwise. However, as queer critics like Paul Preciado have noted, sci-fi and fantasy representations of cyborgs and other transformative bodies often lean into "fixing" disabled people or moving gender nonconforming bodies more easily towards technologies upholding a normative standard rather than questioning the standard all together.

Spyre is a world that deals with similar issues to ours, even without direct one-to-one correlations, so it, too, is a place where the narrative and artistic choices should be examined in how it helps us interpolate the world the audience resides in. From the Applebees cultish adherence to a deity-based nationalism to the various representations of parental neglect and abuse and every side story in-between, Dimension20's flagship show does not shy away from difficult realities even when recasting them through fantasy. Ragh, as a half-orc gay son of a disabled single mother, then, I see the arc his fat body goes through as meaningful and intertwined with his self-acceptance and queerness. He moves away from the toxic masculinity engineered into his blood rush team to instead pursue coalition comraderie with his friends to the point that he and his mother end up joining a communal living situation with those friends and their parents. Ragh's body expands as his family does, as his ties to community do, and to me, the gift of his fatness is the invitation to expansion that it holds out to us as viewers.

Not discounting that diet culture is a thing that exists (hello: fad diets, juice cleanses, scam diet supplements, almond moms) but none of that existing and being bad contradicts that a healthy weight range also exists and that there are health consequences to obesity the same way there are consequences for being drastically underweight. You don’t really help yourself by rejecting one toxic and unsustainable way of thinking about your body and the food you put into it only to replace it with another. Some of y’all also really be calling any action and positivity towards actions that move someone away from being overweight or obese “diet culture” which makes it pretty fucking meaningless the same way that y’all conflate being 500lbs to being maybe 20 or 30 lbs overweight so I guess it’s just the same sort of dishonesty you’d expect.

So this doll is evil and bad and will make every child that lays eyes on her instantly anorexic. If they play with her once they will immediately succumb to starvation and die. This is bad because being thin inherently promotes restrictive eating disorders.

But this is fine. This won't cause kids to immediately develop BED and become obese. Playing with this once won't instantly make them balloon up to 300lbs. This is apparently good because restrictive eating disorders are bad but binge eating disorders are fine. Something to strive for, even.

Because being obese isn't unhealthy too? Because nobody dies from weight-related illnesses, right? That's surely never happened.

Being skinny: gross, unacceptable, dangerous, will cause 800 million little girls to start micro-managing calories the very instant they unbox her.

Being obese: beautiful, desirable, healthy, will empower girls to reject diet culture and shovel as much deep fried shit into their mouths as humanely possible (a good and positive thing!) the minute they unbox her.

If one ED is bad, if one doll promotes EDs simply by existing in her body size, then the opposite end ED is also bad and this doll also promotes EDs simply by existing in her body size.

If they just made a new character that happened to be obese I wouldn't care. But to totally alter this doll because "she promotes anorexia," and update her so she is massively fucking fat while just conveniently ignoring the very real dangers of obesity, that is a hypocrisy that pisses me right off.

on elves being vegetarians:

nature is incredibly important to elves. while hunting may have been reasonable and accessible in the past, due to the recent dwindling of game and the general decrease in population (sauron) many have refrained from this.

in recent times, it has been only on rare occasions that elves hunt. when they do, it is often symbolic and follows some set rules, such as refraining from hunting mothers, children, and in recent years, adolescents in their prime. this is to encourage reproduction as well as be respectful to the population.

while hunting was once considered as acceptable and culturally important, is is now frowned upon in modern times and only done on occasion and is very strictly monitored.

elves don’t have livestock. they don’t domesticate intentionally, and certainly not for food. they prefer things in their natural state, and many elves resort to a raw diet. it is both convenient and establishes a deeper bond to middle earth.

with livestock and hunting ruled out, we can consider reasons beyond necessity.

ike humans, there is a vast range of dietary preferences, restrictions, and various reasons behind these lifestyles. morality, necessity, or the hardship of introducing a new protein after a good thousand years.

many elves would reject eating meat at all. there’s various reasons, such as not growing up with it, scarcity, or simply a moral rejection of consuming something with a soul or that has a heartbeat. some elves feel more connected to middle earth and their ancestors by continuing to hunt/eat meat. many more view it as a special treat and something representative of the old days- something to be cherished and savored.

not only this but many recipes for preparing meat have fallen out of practice. not forgotten entirely, but rended useless. some see cooking meat as preserving this part of their culture. some don’t event realize how much they’ve lost over the years.

many elves also don’t have access to fish or most sea food, with the exception of fresh water fish, wish isn’t desirable to most.

why some elves can’t stomach meat:

introducing a new food can be stressful on the body, especially a new protein. if an elf has gone without meat for a long period of time, they will lose the ability to digest it. much like how lactose tolerant people will become intolerant over time when not consuming dairy frequently enough. also, if an elf has never had meat and introduced to it in later years, it will take them a while to adjust. most foods are introduced in adolescence. this isn’t always the case, leading to complications down the line.

why legolas, specifically, is vegetarian:

mirkwood has scare naturally occurring game. legolas is deeply connected to his home and it’s native species. when he was younger, it was simply out of necessity as there was a temporary ban on hunting native species to encourage the wildlife to grow naturally to a healthy population. this didn’t occur without help, and is much recent years, the population has dwindled even further.

because of the general lack of meat growing up, legolas does not know how to cook, season, or generally properly prepare meat. in practice, at least. he also wasn’t introduced to meat until he was much older, which caused some reactions that weren’t entirely pleasant that he wishes to avoid.

legolas also knows the importance of keeping local wildlife at a healthy level. elves used to lean populations that grew excessive and dominated the environment, but they no longer have that luxury and but have now turned their attention coaxing wildlife to return to a sizeable population. legolas actively makes an effort in this.

now this doesn’t mean he dissuades natural predator, but actively hunts invasive species and targets vegetation dangerous to local wildlife.

point being, be makes an effort to protect and preserve and eating meat seems counterproductive to him.

does this mean legolas NEVER eats meat? of course not. he won’t waste food, and when a meal is cooked for him, he will generally attempt to eat it. he also regularly steals bites from other peoples plates which don’t prescribe to the same dietary restrictions. he knows this and does it anyways.

especially when with the fellowship. hunting is hard work and cooking is just as important. meals (especially so with meat) must be cherished and it means a lot that he can share them with his companions.

yes, though honestly i dont try to ruminate on it or anything like that. liking fatness is innate for me, the actual kinky stuff i think is probably formed of life experiences (not necessarily trauma but that too for some things), and stuff like media (sexualized violence in media definitely had an effect on me), and i think maybe just a lucky synapse connection in some cases. cause like, something can stimulate you and you dont really know why or have any reasoning at all, but if it feels nice then you'll seek it out again and again. in the case of feedism specifically, i know for many feedees the trauma of diet culture/or just fatphobia in general contributes to the bliss in rejecting those ideals. the appeal of the taboo, etc etc. sometimes i think its about fulfilling a need, too. like, emotionally

despite all the years of work i’ve been doing to unlearn internalized fatphobia and let go of shame about my body and eating habits and reject diet culture etc etc, the fact remains that i feel such a sense of relief when i have the opportunity to enjoy a meal completely alone

it doesn’t happen that often because i live with elderly parents who don’t get out much anymore and rarely do anything together so i can count on one hand the number of hours per year that i actually have the house to myself. and to be clear, when they are home or i’m around others or in public i don’t feel shame or anxiety about being perceived while eating as a fat person (which let me tell you has taken a ton of time and effort to get to that place)

but. BUT. when i do have a precious hour alone at home and i can do anything at all with no judgement or input, almost always the thing i most want to do is prepare a nice meal for myself and sit and eat it, utterly unperceived.

i’m a slow eater and i like to languish over my meals and taste every bite and sit at the table for what most people consider to be way too long. i like certain foods and combinations that my parents don’t like. i have a compulsive need to watch a show while i eat. i drop food on myself and on the floor; i get crumbs all over the table; i sometimes smear my face. and it’s such a relief sometimes to be able to just relax and exist and eat food as myself, unapologetically

Since you’ve made a few new Inuzuka ocs that live during your founders era au, what are your headcannons for the clan’s culture during that time? I know that Kishimoto hasn’t given us much information on the clan in general but what are your ideas? (:

I’m pretty much HC them as nomadic/brigands during the founders era; they didn’t stay in one place too long as they understood over hunting wasn’t ideal or sustainable + they didn’t

Because they are a brigands-like clan, they are ROUGH around the edges

The more assertive the Inuzuka, the more respected they are

If they happen to be timid, that just tends to make their parents or partners more protective of them

They believed in quick and swift justice when it comes to crimes committed against one another. Should a grievance be great enough and the accused is found guilty, it often ends rather brutally via disembowelment, blood eagle, or being boiled alive. Making sure they feel the pain of their victims

They did there own thing, but some of them would work with the Senju as tracking aids from time to time (for money of course)

Their attire is as ragtag as them. It’s pretty much whatever they’ve taken, sew, and repurposed

They were probably a much larger clan do them taking in others and teaching them their ways. Also do to the fact that their birth rates were significantly higher than average

Marriage ceremonies weren’t really a thing in their clan. Pairs were considered a married couple after spending a conservative amount of days and nights with their partner alone

They were considered “divorced” after spending an extended time apart or when they are publicly rejected by their spouse

Monogamy and polygamy were both wildly practiced. Cheating was extremely frowned upon

They can smell sex on each other and arousal, it would take an absolute dummy to try and cheat and get away with it

Marking one’s partner isn’t really a thing that has to be done by instinct, but it’s pretty common for a few bites or scratches to occur with them during sex

It just comes with the territory of having an Inuzuka lover with sharp teeth and nails

Smell is an important part of life for the Inuzukas.

If they like someone’s appearance but not their scent, it’s almost impossible to move forward with their relationship

They smell big storms in the distance

They know they’re in the right location by scents and sights

They use scents in storytelling (yes, you need to know what great grandfather Jun smelled like. It’s important!!)

Everyone is equal but elders were held in higher esteem for surviving so long

leaders were chosen based on who everyone felt was qualified to represent them (which generally were individuals that were confident and rational)

If a leader was proven to be weak willed, they would be sat down. Immediately.

No Inuzuka will go into battle without their ninken. That means if a ninken is sick, that person has to stay back with their companion(s)

Because they are so good at tracking, relocating, and hunting, they themselves are extremely hard to track. unless you know their markings they leave for their young

Their diets mostly consist of meats and some root vegetables. Good luck getting them to try anything leafy

They have a lot of festivals and traditions, including;

moon viewing - a time to get together and observe the new moon (in reality they do this whenever there’s a clear night. It’s their excuse to party under the stars. There will be howling, possible fights, and definitely new couples forming)

Hunting games - who can get the biggest (insert animal) that season. The winner usually gets paired handsomely and then all meat is then smoked and preserved by everyone. It’s also a time when they teach their children about how to cook properly

Canine celebrations - anytime a ninken has returned from war and did an excellent job, they throw a celebration just for it/them.

Virginity - the random HC I warned about lmao. I just picture them as sex positive people, so howling after their first time having sex is like an odd tradition. Which results in a bunch of congratulation howls from the clan, not everyone does it, but enough do that they all know what that means💀

However, if their partner doesn’t have as good of a howl as them, people will assume the sex was bad 💀

Birth celebrations - it’s tradition for births to be announced immediately and it’s customary to have a celebration that night in honor of the new life. The parents aren’t obliged to attend for obvious reasons, but they’ll probably overhear the singing of their child’s name at some point.

This tradition can get tricky with multiple births in a day and cause a prolonged celebration that might annoy the new parents and other residents

Heirlooms - typically cords, accessories, and furs that are gifted to them on their coming of age birthday. These are usually divided amongst the children and deemed as selfish of a parent choose to keep the item instead of gifting it to their child(Ren)

Ninken gifting - once a child is old enough or has proven themselves to be responsible enough. They are gifted a ninken to bond with and aid them moving forward

Memorials - if a Inuzuka should lose their ninken, it’s considered as bad as the the loss of any other member of the clan. The ninken is to be given a proper funeral and their owner/partner will receive many condolences

If a ninken is lost do to recklessness. The Inuzuka responsible will also receive the anger and distancing of their clan. Not so much if they are a child, but they still will not be given another ninken for years.

They raise their children together, meaning; a may have birthed the child, but b - z look out for the child too.

Children are not raised with hardcore gender roles in mind, so they would often be confused during this time when someone outside the clan talks about gender roles

It is not a big deal when someone leaves the clan, because they always know their way back to the pack

it’s just rare for them to leave the clan as they don’t typically fit in with outsiders

If someone brings someone into the clan, they are given light jabs for awhile until they can prove themselves (just yell at them to stop and that person will be quickly accepted) or their partner tells the others to back off

They are in touch with nature and know the wild animal’s habits, therefore are known to be a clan able to “talk with animals”. Which isn’t the case, but it’s a nice assumption, so they don’t correct it
