i’m thinking that in their mid-late teens, the shaw pack boys were all popular for their own reasons. david, the stoic and handsome one of the group that the teacher always praised for doing well on exams and assignments. asher was everybody’s friend and was constantly getting invited to parties that he would drag his pack friends to as well. then the youngest, milo, was always on trend and was always seen dressing the best and knowing everyone’s business just because he was a smooth talker.

so when 17-year-old tank is moved to their school after getting expelled, everyone begins to wonder who they are and what they bring to the table. they were in the same grade as the boys, even shared some classes. whispers become popular around them too.

in their english class with david, the teacher introduces them to the class and the scowl on their face makes everyone look away. david moves his seat from the front of the class to the back with them and helps tank catch up.

third period with asher in media, he mentions their favourite movie and gets them into the conversation as much as possible. everyone’s surprised when asher hugs their shoulders tightly despite their stiff position.

milo somehow convinces the guy who sits next to him who’s in love with his accent to let tank take his spot in history. the class watches in wonder as he shares his textbook with them, something he didn’t do with anyone else.

by the end of the first day, the whole school is theorising; maybe darlin’ was a partner to one of them? they all had a crush on them? something like that?

but at the front of the school, tank sees by the walls of the gates a group of boys that milo told them to stay away from. they had cornered someone who looked younger than them. they could smell the fear. tank was waiting for the boys at the entrance so that maria could pick them all up to head home. while no one knows what opinion to form of them, the next scene definitely helped them.

when the shaw pack boys exit the building to see the crowd forming outside, they immediately know it’s tank.

david warned them not to start anything, but something ticked them off. the way the bullied talked to them and how they pushed them away and attempted to ignore tank. they in turn pushed one of them away from the kid and told them to ‘fuck off’. that had garnered attention from everyone as the first punch was thrown.

blood had been spilled on the grass, as well as the group of boys milo told tank about. their knuckles were bruised and scratched and they wiped the boys’ blood off onto their shirt. picking up the phone on the floor, they turned to the kid and handed it back, apologising for causing a scene.

“tank…” david grumbles out as he cuts through the crowd. they glance up back to him with widen eyes as they get caught. “the hell is going on?”

“nothing…” tank sheepishly retort and they wipe the dirt off their face, “is maria here?”

milo nods his head as he holds his phone to his ear.

“let’s go, c’mon.” asher pats the new student’s back comfortingly.

tank offers a little nod with an embarrassed face to the kid you were defending.

“yeah, walk away, pussy!” the first boy from the group calls out to tank as he warily stands up.

immediately, they turn around and land a downwards punch into his face. david clicks his tongue and locks his arm into theirs and tugs them away forcibly.

“fuck you say, bitch? you can’t talk down at me when you’re biting the curb like that!” tank shouts as they fight against david’s pulling to no avail, “let your doctor know that i fixed your nose for ya’! use that money to buy yourself better bodyguards!”

“tank.” david sneers. they shut up once they see his cold glare.

the shaw pack had all lived in the same area, so when they’re waiting to get home, david tells maria that the both of you would be visiting gabe together to talk to him. tank got an earful from mainly david that night. maria had healed them and sent them home after, to which milo had to accompany.

the next day at school, tank walks into school behind the boys in hopes that nobody recognises them. but everyone does, quickly. the bullies tank had dealt with yesterday turn away in haste when the four of them pass. and everyone is whispering.

during lunch, tank sits in next to milo and across from david and asher when someone approaches the table. some girl they don’t recognise taps tank’s shoulder, to which they flick away and look at her with an annoyed expression. she smiles regardless.

“hi, um… i noticed in homeroom that the bruise on your cheek is still kinda’ there, so i got you an icepack from the nurse’s office,” she says as she takes tank’s hand and gently places the pack in their palm, “you’ve got a pretty face, so take care of it.”

she leaves and goes back to her table with her friends, where she covers her face and her friends cheer her on. tank turns back to their friends and rests the icepack on their cheek without thinking about it.

“you know her?” asher questions.

“huh? don’t think so.” they admit.

“everyone knows tank now,” milo claims as he bites into his sandwich, “they’re callin’ ‘em the ‘hot new troublemaker’. you’d think they’d be scared of tank, but nah, everyone wants you. probably more than david now.”

tank blinks at him in confusion before removing the pack and looking to the girl again. she looks away quickly. “‘hot new troublemaker’?”

“not far off.” asher hums.

they begin to tease tank for their new alias.

for the next few years, even into college, everyone knows of the four of them. whilst nobody knew the connection they shared through magic, they were always expected together.

the tall, mysterious leader that cared deeply for his friends, the charismatic one who was loved by anyone and everyone, the youngest who was silver-tongued and a know-it-all and finally, the hot-headed firecracker with the enchanting face.

sam would hear about these stories at the solstice that tank brings him to. they claim it never happened and there’s no proof, but when they all get home milo invites them to his place to show them the countless love letters that tank rejected.

for the design lab: Sweetheart oc

1. What's your listener's name and nickname?

Cassiel (chosen name), commonly referred to as Sneaks or Cass (still called Sweetheart by Milo)

2. What's their backstory?

Cassiel comes from a family of five, having one older and one younger brother (Jonah and Raphael respectively). He comes from a well-off family, high middle class, both parents work in healthcare. Their older brother is studying to become a surgeon, and their younger brother wants to become a sculptor but is being pressured to pursue a science instead. Typically Cass doesn’t get as much feedback about their carer from their parents. A few times it was suggested they should become a teacher or a lawyer, but Cass never liked the idea of those. He never considered going into medicine, since they knew how much it strained their family, and they wanted to do something outside of the beaten path. Make a name for themselves as *Cassiel* not as a Grandwood (family name). Because their parents worked such hectic hours, Cass was often the one to watch their little brother in the evenings/weekends, and did not have free time for themselves because of this. They were not a very social child either, obsessed with books—mystery books in particular—and pouring themselves into their studies so they don’t get chewed out for their grades. When they found out that they were empowered, being the only one in their family to be empowered, they were very freaked out. They were only 13, and had no one to turn to. One of his teachers, also empowered, alerts Mazeed al-Masih (goes by Maze generally) who is a department worker, and he teaches Cass everything they need to know. They find out the opportunities they now have because they are empowered, things he didn’t even dream about, and he sets off for DAMN university as soon as he’s graduated high school. DAMN is in a different state than Cass, despite being the closest, so this does separate them from their family, and they don’t make a habit of keeping in contact with anyone but their little brother. They make it their mission to become an Investigator, and the best one around at that.

3. What's the desired aesthetic of your listener character (punk, greaser, bimbo, scene kid, schoolgirl)?

Kinda thinking punk meets 1920’s investigator. If that makes sense. idk if it does.

4. What's your listener's gender presentation like?

Trans-masc, usually says that they’re non-binary. (they/he pronouns)

I’m not sure any official words for it, but like a volleyball/swimmer build (they played volleyball since middle school)

Familial (both found and blood): The pack, Mazeed, Raphael (little brother), their friends from DAMN, the rest of their family to an extent

Reading, puzzles (both jigsaw and things like crosswords/sudoku/etc), walks/cafe visits to people watch, volleyball

They’re pretty attentive to the ones they love. If there’s the tiniest thing that they notice they’re going to attempt to fix it. Very much a quality time/acts of service guy. Some would think that because of the effort they put into their work, they wouldn’t be a very good lover and those people are very very wrong. They will make time for everything (even if it nearly kills them)

Family, justice, quality time (if that counts??)

16. What's the inspiration behind your listener's design?

Honestly a lot of Cass’ design/vibe is just a mash of a bunch of things I enjoy in a character, but the main thing i think of when i think of him is “tasks themselves with fixing the world” and a lot of 1920’s snuff films. Cass is definitely my most chaotic oc so far.

17. Could you give me a vague concept of what your listener's visual vibe is?

Fashionable when trying, very cozy when they’re not. They’re very intimidating when they dress up, usually has rings and the like on. If it’s for work, it’s very much business attire with a few personal touches that won’t get them in trouble (their rings, for example). If it’s a casual day in with Milo/the pack they let themselves dress cozier with over sized sweaters and such.

18. What are some extra tidbits you wanna tell me about your listener?

This kinda goes with the program but i kinda wanna stress how stubborn (maybe headstrong is a better word idk) they are. They will do something the hardest way because that’s how they started it and they don’t want to change plans now. They also have a necklace that their little brother gave them that they won’t take off. I think that’s all I wanna mention.

LaVeau-gue - design #004 - Sweetheart - Cassiel - Pluto

I haven't touched this series in a while but I'm back at it and starting it up slowly with Pluto's Sweetheart, Cassiel!

Design Notes

I would say this was difficult to design but that would be a lie. Instead I will say that it was fun to mess with this design.

First off, my major considerations were that this was a design for sweetheart, it was supposed to be inspired by Athena, it was noir punk and that you're a Percy Jackson fan (debatable since you like the movies but oookaaayyy/j).

So for this, I wanted to lean into different things; Cassiel should look put together but similalry uncooperative-you mention that growing up, they got good grades but did so for the sake of earning them to pass off as a good student rather than having a love for it. Additionally, the mention of their love of puzzles as well as their meticulous attention to detail concerning their loved ones gave me a good idea of what their shape language should be.

Cassiel reads someone who is somewhat athletic, attentive and keen to question things so while their hair might be slicked back, their posture upright and their attire somewhat kept, they do not concede to the complete idea of being wholely tidy by appearance. Following old british punk influence, I loosened Cassiel's tie, gave him a blue patch in their nice dress pants, added a blue studded belt and choker while also giving them a fishnet top which is more emo than punk but the addition of it feels it's anti-DUMP dresscode so I ran with that.

I did take note of Cassiel's penchant for dressing up and rings but elected that such a look would not be regular enough to make up for a complete design so I leaned away from that and into something that Cassiel would wear while in the field.

Finally, after those aspects, I then leaned into their athena inspiration and DUG for some inspiration from Epic The Musical-that led me to using blues and grays within the design BUT the majority of the influence came from the concept of barn owls. This shaped out with their hair being slicked back, their colour pallette mimicking the same distribution of colour across a barn owl's feathers as well as the framing of his face. As a smaller note, I gave them blonde hair and a grey streak as a callback to annabeth who sports that kind of hair in the PJO books if I'm not mistaken.

Fellow Darlin’-Chrissy Truther here, you can’t NOT tell me what this storyline for them is! I have one of my own as well, but I’m always intrigued by other ways of viewing the same story!!! (Sorry to bother, but I’m so psyched that someone else agrees about this!)

A WILLING SACRIFICE—(*grabs you*) okay so, I’m so happy you asked!!!!! I have a lot to say about them so I’m very excited to tell you

Okay some basic info about my version of Tank is that their humanborn, hence why they have a harder time connecting with the pack. They don’t understand the magical world and by proxy, the Shaw pack as well someone who wasn’t a humanborn would. I mean, I think we all known how biased the empowered world is to humanborns (cough cough DAMN cough DUMP cough cough) their parents were a bit…late to understand their needs as a shifter and even later to fully grasp what was happening, let alone accept it. The scare on their cheek was a testament to that

So, here’s teen Tank, with a very messed up attitude about themselves and feeling isolated within minutes of being introduced to the pack. Once again, the pack kids already have an understanding of the world around them so they do things very much differently than Tank is used to. Things Tank has no idea how to do or even understand, it’s been said before Tank wasn’t close to David or Asher growing up but even then. I’d imagine someone would try and help tank get used to and understand their new life. It didn’t alway work and the questions they asked were hard to answer or know why they asked.

Enter Christian, born into an empowered family and taught everything Tank wanted/needed to know since he was a baby, just as much as a loner as Tank was since he wasn’t a legacy kid like David or Asher as well as having a decently bad attitude… he was a huge dick to Tank when they first came, like full on asshole the way teens are when a new kid who doesn’t understand what you think is basic knowledge shows up. Chris was relentless in his teasing and childish jokes, always laughing at their innocent questions and chiding their attempts.

Tank didn’t take it laying down tho.

They fought, a lot. Verbally, physically, pranks and tricks. They were at each other’s throats from the second they woke up, to the second they went to bed. Rinse, cycle, repeat. Like clock work, some of the older pack members had some bets they’d kill each other before they got along.

Surprisingly they do start to get along, but not in the way people thought they would. My personal HC is that Christians parents weren’t the…best, this feeling coming from Chris sisters specifically using “ if you didn’t help raise him “ when the Asher and Milo tease him about Amanda and call him Chrissy(which seems to be a family nickname?). Maybe I’m reading into it a bit much, maybe I’m not. I’ll keep on rolling with it till Erik proves me wrong (not likely tho with how much he writes parental problems with his characters)

Both Christian and Tank have that in common and big places gossip, people talk and the walls have eyes. They started to see each other as something like kindred spirits, bad attitudes and shitty parents with more than a few people willing to let them dig a big hole for them to throw themselves down. They still fought and shit but it was more like a game to them both, some way to keep active and to have fun. Bloody noises and complaints from local law enforcement aside.

Things changed tho, Tank and Chrissy were still close but it was harder and harder for Tank to take the isolation from the pack. They had Christian, they’d always have him but he started to find his place, hell he even started to see Amanda. Tank? Nothing, just..an outsider.

Enter Quinn, I don’t really think I need to explain what happened with him.

Being with Quinn just drives a bigger wedge between Tank and the pack, even Christian. They start making excuses and excuses, they still showed up when he needed or asked them but there was something wrong. Just something off, maybe it was this new guy Tank was seeing, maybe it was how Tank was hiding something from him. But Tank never showed so he never asked.

Then he gets a call that Tanks in the healers, something about a rough Vamp and them being hurt. He was the only one they could think of for Tank, their parents are gone and aren’t even on the list for emergency contacts.

He leaves hours later with a promise to catch up next time when their more healed and rested, not knowing right after he left. That be the last he’d see of Tank.

Tank lies as we know to David about heading to their parents to heal and they lie to Christian about catching up. Both for the same reason, to keep the pack and most importantly-to keep Christian safe. Tank just hopes the hurt from them leaving will keep him off their trail.

Christian doesn’t know their gone till they don’t show at the pack meeting and David tells everybody the news. Christian immediately knows something is wrong and is deeply hurt, but he knows tank better than anyone else. He didn’t look for them bc he knew they didn’t want to be found-not now at least and he wanted to trust Tank at least told the truth about them just leaving to heal.

And then a month passes, then another and then it becomes close to a year. (Ten months to be precise, I counted )

Contact with Tank is minimal before drying out on everyone but David and that’s just checking in to see if their alive.

Then David finds out a full year later (once again did the math, tank was actually hunting Quinn outside of Daliha for about 10 months and then showed up, it took David a full 3-4 months after that to realize something was up) and gives Tank a rightful talking too and tells them to show up to the next meeting. so who would show up to the next pack meeting?

Tanker and they look very different than anyone saw them, especially Christian. More scars than he remembers and a haunted, sad, angry look in those eyes.

This is just general lore, don’t have all the kinks worked out but man lemme tell you! There is a lot to Tanker and Chrissy’s relationship, lots of emotions and stuff
