Do you think a bird in a cage looks to the sky?

And dreams of freedom?

always out of reach,

And yet, so close

Fragile crocheted warmth drapes from my nest.

Loose bandages cling to my arm.

A usual birdsong is replaced by cold silence.

My dark reflections greet me

In a mirror that shows 8 jagged versions of myself.

I brush my hair into place with a broken comb,

And open the door into a room of artificial light.

Today.

I will watch the sun rise.

I will dress my wounds.

I will brush my teeth.

And I will go for a walk.

A witness to the passage of time

Emerald stemmed buds thrive

with loving attention from winged life.

tangled -not knotted- through blades of grass,

an abstract haven for springtails and crickets.

And amidst the well constructed chaos of nature

the serenity is shattered by blades of man.

wipe the brow of sweat from their laborious day

stand above the ruined lawn

as creature hides beneath the remains of home.

freshly cut grass - a tall glass of iced drink.

a dozen cycles later - the carnage loops

it saddens me to have never seen those buds bloom.
