What was your inspiration for Yara? how did she come to be?
Oooh good question!! Yara, like the vast majority of my OCs, underwent a lot of tweaks and changes and development to the point I have her at right now, where I've got her story and personality and abilities and all that pretty tightly nailed down.
Her character concept started as Mihawk's daughter (I just thought he was EXTREMELY COOL the first time he showed up in the East Blue arc), since I have a thing with my OCs where they always end up being related to a canon character somehow (i.e. Circe Mackinnon (Soul Eater) being the half-sister of Franken Stein; Lilletz Lucilfer (HxH) being the younger sister of Chrollo; Haganezuka Minako (KnY) being the niece of Haganezuka Hotaru; Joey Armansky (Death Note) being the cousin of Mary Kenwood/Wedy; (Iryna Kovalenko (BnHA) fits this mould too but I haven't revealed who she's related to just yet heheh it's a bit of a doozy)). Funny enough, I initially envisioned her travelling with her father and perhaps encountering the Straw Hats at Baratie, so the whole abandonment plotline actually didn't come into play until later, when I decided to make her a Whitebeard Pirate after meeting Ace in the Alabasta arc and absolutely falling in love with him (which only grew as I learned more about him and the depth of his character).
Sometimes, the funny thing with OCs is that after a certain point, their stories just sort of begin to write themselves and all the pieces start to fit together in some really nice thematic ways. Yara and Ace's relationship developed as they found common ground with their resentment towards their fathers and both looking to Whitebeard as a surrogate father figure, which in turn developed Yara's internal struggles with her own identity (not knowing where she came from for the longest time and then even after finding out who her father is, dealing with the pain of being an unwanted and neglected child who grew up into an fiercely angry, yet profoundly lonely young woman). The more I thought about what Yara's early life must've been like, the more I could get a good grasp of who she is as a young adult, what her major plot beats are, and how those connect with the canon story.
Her relation to Wano and the Shimotsuki family (and Zoro, who became her second cousin on her mother's side) was a later addition, as I continued to learn more about the One Piece world and how she could potentially fit into each arc. Marineford and Wano were the two natural places where she would exist, so I've really tried to figure out her development in relation to those two arcs.
I hope that answers your question okay! I could really talk about Yara (or any of my OCs) all day heheh
#oc: bravada yara#my ocs#asked and answered#tl;dr it really was a nice progression of different concepts i had neatly fitting into place#yara as mihawk's abandoned daughter fit beautifully into her desire to rescue ace at marineford when the two came face to face#and her reconnection with mihawk during the timeskip just ended up working out perfectly considering her losses at marineford#giving her the wano connection has woven her neatly into that arc as well#even if her mother wasn't from wano she likely would've gone with marco and izou anyways#but now she has an extra reason to be there that only could've happened because she reconnected with mihawk#and her distrust in the world government because of her run-in with cipher pol gives her a perfect reason to not care about ace's parentage#because she doesn't buy into the wg propaganda of who [redacted for my opla friends] was said to be#so ace tells her and she's just like *shrug* “cool. i hate my dad too”

also!! s/i ideas.. i think electro polearm or catalyst and she's from liyue and grew up there as a kid, which is where she learned to dance
#i think the reason she goes to natlan is gonna be bc her father was from natlan but died when she was young#and after her mother passes away unexpectedly she decides to travel to natlan and reconnect with her father in some way#i think her true passion would be dancing and she's always been drawn to the stars/the idea of flying#spends a lot of time stargazing in liyue#but as she gets older she can't afford to dance and has to work multiple jobs to help support her mom#i'm thinking she works at wanmin restaurant bc i am so endeared by her being childhood friends w the trio#but anyway#and she's losing her passion and spark#and when her mother dies she's driven to go to liyue (pretty young i'm thinking early teens?)#and then along the journey is when she gets her electro vision#and she meets mualani and they become besties#and through mualani she meets kini#who's initially pretty distrusting of her given that she's an outsider and this is well before the traveler arrives and the war ends#but they become close friends#idk i might change all of this LMAO#just putting my thoughts down for now#⟡ rambles

love an ending that is 'happy' in that a desirable outcome is produced, but made complicated by the fact that the protagonist has given up something integral to themself in order to make it so. it's sort of uncool in some circles to admit you LIKE when characters give up something really cool for something pretty basic, but it's all about context and quality of storytelling, right? that sort of conviction - this is a part of my personality that i am permanently renouncing access to, and it's my choice, and i'm going to miss it, but i'm not going to regret it - that's compelling. ending in which a character who loves nothing more than the rush of finding the answer to a question is handed, one day, a puzzle they just don't want to solve. and that part of their life is over, but it's not a bad thing. maybe the answer doesn't need to be known. maybe not knowing it opens you up to a creative mindset you never had before. character who gains some kind of special power chooses to give it up not because they no longer love the ability, not because it hasn't improved their life, but because this thing they love comes with costs, is getting in the way of a life someone they love or loved and lost would want them to live. i'm glad it turned out this way. i miss the missing thing with all my heart. i would let go of it again if i was asked to choose.
#stories where people give up something beautiful to live ordinary lives because there's something in the ordinary life they want more#a very common variant of this is of course the 'immortal character renounces their lifespan for a mortal lover' plot#which is fine and all#but i like more nuanced versions . like my tobias animorphs epilogue idea where he and his mother reconnect more permanently#and one day when he's at her house they have a long. long talk. about what he is going to do now. it's been years but he's still#in this holding pattern of grief and solitude. but his mother is his one anchor to the world of humanity. and she's not getting any younger#and hawk lifespans aren't getting any longer. and they spent so much time away from each other#and he says. i miss her like an amputation mom. how do you keep going?#and she says. not missing your father because i didn't know that i loved him and he was gone was worse#and she asks hm if he's sure he could be human again. if he could give up his hard-earned flexibility of form#and he says we've been sitting here talking for three hours. little late to second-guess it now#this got away from me . but you see my vision#writing tag#animorphs i guess also lol#q

Did you know? Studies show 90% of abused children quit right before they become the perfect vessel for a child of what they believe their parents will actually love. KEEP DESTROYING WHO YOU ARE FOR A MEANINGLESS CAUSE!
#luly talks#you know its fucked when you make a post thinking of yourself AND harry osborn#that's worse than harry dubois tags for me#anyway my beautiful step son aside uh. yeah 1) this is ok to rb but 2) this is actually a bit of a vent#because obviously me before but also bc talking w my therapist recently she was like... trying to get me to think of positives of my mother#so i'd consider reconnecting w her#and its so mental?#like woman i had to be kicked out of that house because even when i was about to kill myself to escape i wasnt willing to leave#nothing will fade the scars that my gripping claws left on that house as i was dragged away#i spent the last FOUR FUCKING YEARS trying to recover and come to terms with the fact my mother will never love me#and that there's nothing i can do to make her change#(which is what i tried to do for the previous 16 years of my life)#only for you to be like okay but what if she did like you this time?#WOMAN I HAVE POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER BE FOR FUCKING REAL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(ventpost)
"you know you're getting a bit old for meeting people if you want kids"
WHO'S FAULT IS THAT?!
Who chose to raise us in the middle of the the fucking woods?!
Who actively deliberately isolated us from our ethnic community because you were embarrassed by how we were failures and your internalized self racism makes you think all brown men as skeevy and you specifically wanted to keep us away from them and put effort into achieving that and cutting us off from all community connection?
Who let me switch to correspondence school and study alone at home because I said I was bored, instead of giving a single solitary fuck about me and noticing I was obviously depressed?
Who raised us abstinence only to the point that any mixing with the 'opposite' sex was unacceptable?
Who actively shut down any attempt I made to develop or act on hobbies or personal interests, because the only think I should be doing is studying?
Do you think that somehow the negative effects of keeping kids at home only allowed to do schoolwork and chores and unable to drive unable to leave the house unable to get a job unable to engage in hobbies unable to engage in community unable to leave the house... somehow the negative effects only apply if you're deliberately doing it for patriarchal cult reasons?
Bitch managed to raise us fully traditional entirely by accident
With a good dash of learned helplessness with constant messaging that were incapable of managing to do anything or survive by ourselves
I've only been out the house for 3 years! And 2 of that was the last year of the degree and the first year of the job being a new grad Covid nurse in peak Covid!
I've only been able to breathe for one year!
I've had one year of freedom and I've been using it to learn how to be human for the first time!
And you've spent that year telling me to break up with everyone I happen to meet!
Don't fucking tell me I'm too old now
You were supposed to help me!
You knew I wanted kids! Why didn't you help me earlier!
You did everything you could to keep me isolated because you were projecting your own trust issues onto me and never stopped to think what effect that might have when you're raising someone!
Why does generational trauma have to be so mundane
#Vent post#Negativity#My posts#My life#Aka I have spent one single evening with my family#Day 1 of a full 30 days#Luckily I'll be with my dad not my mother#The way he doesn't care about me is a lot less sharp for me these days at least#He saves that all for not giving a shit about my sibling#I'm going on a quest to reconnect with my family and heritage#This is a great start#.... She's not wrong tbh#But it's still a sore spot#Haydn's parents bought me supplies for the hobbies I want to try#Ive wanted to do them for 10 years#But I've only just now got the freedom and support to start#I'm a beginner now at everything#But I'm starting.#I'm starting.#Just let me live.#Without making mundane things into stress.#Haydn's mum is so nice.#I know mine is stressed and has a hard life too#But she's miserable for the same reason I am#Right#Flight tomorrow#Gotta sleep#And think morw positive thoughts#My birthday just gone is the best one#Thank you for making me feel loved

Hey, I have read one of your recent posts about Oscar Isaac, and I wanted to ask about the acceptance of someone who's Jewish only on their father's side. Is it that crucial?
I'm asking because my partner is Jewish, while I'm not, but we both really want our future kids to carry the Jewish culture too. Do you think they will be excluded from the community or there can be some problems like that?
I think it generally depends on the denomination and community itself. If you raise your children jewish and you're apart of the community, i think they'll be considered jewish. either way, a lot of people will consider them jewish, but some denominations won't which is why it depends. ethnically, they will always be jewish. a jew is a jew is a jew. being considered religiously jewish has its own set of rules depending on the kind of judaism you'd like to practice. i'm not super knowledgeable on a lot of technicalities, so take this with a grain of salt, but it really all just depends.
#Asks#anonymoose#jumblr#if someone else can explain/answer better pls do#also i think it really helps being raised in the culture and community#by at least one jewish parent#oscar issac was not#he allegedly has 'distant' ancestry#whereas say i have a jewish mother grandmother and great grandmother#and my parents reconnected when i was really young#being far from your jewish ancestor on the family tree#and never being apart of the culture/religion#and not identifying as jewish#means the vast majority will not consider you jewish#oscar isaac is very much a 'special' case in that sense#people who are more connected like your jewish partner having kids#and raising them jewish#is much more simple and accepted#i don't think there's much to worry about

Actually my real thoughts on six feet under is that Nate is an awful person. David is such a classic progressive gay character 2001 style (which means it's genuinely kinda bad in some areas but it's the thought that counts) and that's Claire and Brenda are my favorites which I wouldn't have guessed season one but I truly love them and I think they deserve the world.
Also Russell was raped. Like the show does not take that stance and it really blames him but that's not on him. It was very much rape and I think everyone should have been much kinder to him about that
#six feet under#is he a great guy? no he did not treat claire right anout the abortion but that does not mean everyone should be making gay jokes about him#because his teacher got him drunk wnd stoned and raped him. i know this is radical for 2003 or whatever but man. it sucks to look at#david is so funny and was my favorite early on but claire just stole my heart. hes so.. god its almost nostalgic in the way hes written#we wont ever have a gay character like this again. which is good in some ways! but its so earnest to the times#brenda was sleeper favorite. hated her season one. didn't really like her season two. but man.. these last two seasons i just adore her#everyone treats her so so awfully. she has no one! she keeps reconnecting with her mother because she truly has no one she can trust#because billy.... i actually kinda like billy because he does get good storylines but what he's done to brenda?? oh i could kill him#i want brenda and claire to be happy and surrounded by friends#also i think david and claire being the closest in the family is so good. i love it. i love the way they support each other#anyways im now on season five because ive done nothing but watch this show while being miserable and sick in bed for a few days now
