He felt an overwhelming pinch in his throat, covering his mouth with haggard breaths barely managing to slip in between the wet coughs. His heart stuttered, body shaking, and with an aggressive cough warmth spilled over his palm like a thick, crimson syrup. His eyes widened with shaking irises, watching as red fell from between his fingers. He was bleeding from his qiqiao, and not any small amount. “Ha…Hahah…ahah!”

Little Light - tog ficlet

Something I felt like writing but didn’t know what to do with. A little scene inspired by an old fic of mine, Dahlia. A bonus scene, if you will.

Somewhere outside these old wood walls, an owl calls the morning forth. A gentle if not calming sound to Andromache, but to tiny brand new ears it is unknown and frightening.

The babe emits a discontented little squeal, and as Andromache leans away from the wall to see into the makeshift bassinet — an armoire drawer, placed on the floor between a bedroll and Andromache’s watchful place at the wall — the tiny thing grunts and attempts to kick her swaddled legs. A little lip pouts, trembles, then her gummy mouth opens with grumpy staccato cries.

There’s a shift in the darkness on the bedroll just beside the drawer. There is enough pre-dawn light pouring in from a half-boarded window for Andromache to see Yusuf poke his head up from behind Nicolò’s shoulder, then quickly lift himself on an elbow as he comes out of sleep to register the baby’s distress.

Andromache’s hand is on the swaddled baby’s stomach, just rubbing very gently as Yusuf carefully crawls over Nicolò and comes forward. The child’s newborn cries sound almost like little angry coughs, increasing in volume as Andromache’s attempts to calm her do virtually nothing. She’s so small, so new. In her mind, Andromache is going through the list of remedies to calm her down: Is she hungry? Is she cold? Does she need a change? Was she simply startled by the owl? There are no easy answers, just a crying baby wiggling in tattered fabrics, all they have for her.

Yusuf is on it, though. Has been since that first horrific day that brought the tiny thing to them. He squats in front of the drawer, and Andromache removes her hand as Yusuf very carefully slides a hand behind the baby’s head and neck and begins to free her from her swaddle.

The moment her arms are free, they shoot up next to her head — some reflex Andromache has noticed, and Yusuf coos at the sight of it. Andromache watches the soft look in his eyes with unease, but she’s then drawn to the shift of Nicolò as the baby’s cries wake him too.

Yusuf shushes the babe, and there’s a moment of uncertainty on his face like he’s having similar thoughts to Andromache, similar anxieties, before he gets both hands below her tiny arms, fingers stretched out behind her neck and head to support her, and lifts her from the drawer. As he does so she scrunches up into a little ball, hand-stitched nappy crumpling up as her knees bend, and her pink fists bracket her face as she grunts.

Andromache watches in silence as Yusuf settles the baby against his shoulder, fingers feather-light and safe on the back of her head where her wispy hair gathers at the base of her skull. She adjusts a little, rubbing her nose into Yusuf’s shirt, as Yusuf pulls open the back of her nappy to check her.

Nicolò is there next to them then, more alert and awake than Yusuf whose eyelids are drooping. Andromache can see all the thoughts in Nicolò’s head play out just by the slight crease in his brow as he watches the baby’s face. He raises a hand, sets is back to the floor, and although Andromache had warned them both about the dangers of becoming attached to the child, she does not want the poor thing to suffer while three capable adults can comfort her. She blinks permissively at Nicolò but he doesn’t need the permission from her, only from himself.

Yusuf is bouncing the baby slightly against his shoulder as he shushes her little noises. He turns his head to see the longing on Nicolò’s face and nods sleepily at him. As Nicolò reaches out to stroke a thin curl on the top of the baby’s head, she begins to squeal again and soon unravels into hiccuping little cries. With mild alarm, Yusuf adjusts her so her face is not pressed into his clothes.

“Let me?” whispers Nicolò, hands out and ready. Yusuf nods, stifling a yawn, and very carefully passes the little grumpy ball over to Nicolò, who lays her over his forearm, cupping her bottom and scrunched up feet in his large hand. Yusuf releases her head last in the crook of Nicolò’s elbow, and her fists fly up again as she settles back with another round of staccato cries. With that done, Yusuf immediately stands to rifle through their packs, likely in search of some goat’s milk they’ve saved.

Finding sustenance for the child has been exhausting and certainly a battle, but Andromache has seen too many children starve to let this one go hungry. She will be fed every chance they get, and she will be warm, and when they are able they will pass her into loving hands who will be able to house her and love her and help her grow tall and strong.

But for now, Andromache only sits and watches as Nicolò rubs the pad of his thumb up the space between the child’s peach-fuzz brows, a little trick she’d taught him that may calm her down and put her to sleep but does not seem to be working at the moment. The baby’s mouth is still wide open and trembling as she cries and so, supporting her with both arms, Nicolò stands with an exaggerated groan and begins to bob her just slightly.

“Alright, piccola,” he says, turning away as he begins to pace around a little, humming some low made-up tune on the spot.

Yusuf stands at his side then, with the jar of milk and the cloth they use to soak it in so the baby can suckle, and Andromache lets herself relax, lets her back touch the wall again as she just watches them together, the pink-faced baby emitting little punched-out cries between them. She’s quieting down, though, as Nicolò bobs her like the sea. Yusuf stands by with the cloth, peering curiously at her little face.

Nicolò makes a brave move then. With one shared look with Yusuf, he blinks down at the child and leans down to ever-so-gently press his lips to her head. He stays there even after the little kiss, and Andromache can hear him hushing her softly as he continues to bounce her.

She’s stopped crying. As Nicolò draws back, Andromache can see that her eyes are wide open, gazing up at Yusuf and Nicolò in wonder. They smile down at her, and something lodges itself in Andromache’s throat. Almost subconsciously, her hand closes around the pendant against her chest.

Yusuf senses her unease, of course he does, because he looks over at her and beckons her over with a jerk of his head and an outstretched hand. She goes willingly, if a little stiffly, and although she swears in her mind that they will not be keeping this child it is nice to see the men smiling in victory and adoration at her little face.

“Looks like she just wanted to be held,” Yusuf whispers.

Andromache might think something about the fact that the first hands to ever touch this baby were Nicolò’s. She might think about the fact that Yusuf’s soft voice had been the one to calm her cries on that first night. She might remember the way her tiny body felt so warm in her arms the morning the child’s mother left this earth, when the ground still trembled with aftershocks and somewhere in the distance the ocean watched Andromache’s back.

She says none of this. Instead, she joins them in the middle of the room as it slowly fills with early morning light. The broken three of them, and the fragile brand new fourth.

They have not named her yet. Andromache does not dare. But she will be called Dahlia, after the flowers her mother sold in a little shop north of the hills of Campania, where the winds smell of oleander and the olive trees face the sunrise.

13 fics to me that is crazy. Can I say I truly enjoyed Striking Out. I really don't understand the hate you got for it. Understand not liking what a character is doing but in the end its truly just a story that the author is creating don't read if you don't like. It's tagged angst with a happy ending. There is going to be parts that make you feel sad or mad but it will get better. Sorry I just really loved what you have written for the story.

Thank you, that's very sweet of you to say - and I do agree with you, when I read a story tagged with angst, I'm expecting angst! Over time, I've come to think that maybe some people took the actions of the characters in that story a little too personally, and that's why the reaction was as... intense as it was.

Either way, as much as I have gotten some negative and demotivating comments on that fic, I have also had some truly lovely ones that have been a joy to read - stuff a lot like this 💖

Born AFAB to an English father and a British Indian mother, Theo grew up semi-wealthy in England, and had a violin put in his hands as a very young child. His parents were very involved in his violin playing, he received rigorous teaching from a professional, and was quickly labeled as a child prodigy. By the time he was around 10 years old, he performed at the Menuhin Competition. Though he didn't win, he became semi famous in England among the classical music community. He performed concertos with Orchestras on the regular, and his life was quickly decided for him.

Around this time, he began to understand that he felt different on the inside, that he identified with being a boy more than a girl. He didn't understand much of what that meant, but he knew that he could never tell anyone, because it would ruin his public image.

When he was around 12 years old, and going through puberty, this became much harder. One week before a concert, his parents had him decide between three fancy dresses to wear. While trying to decide, Theo was filled with gender dysphoria, and started to have a panic attack. His parents begun to freak out, and in the middle of this panic attack, his ears started to grow. This was very painful for Theo, and only added to both his and his parents' panicking.

The concert was promptly cancelled, and later Theo's parents told him they were going to arrange for him to have surgery to restore his ears to the way they were before. Theo refused at first, terrified of the notion, but they wouldn't listen. This turned to an argument between him and his parents, and he ended up sending a shock wave through the room. His parents were not harmed, but they were now seriously terrified of him. Their compromise was that Theo didn't have to get the surgery, but he could no longer perform to an audience, or let the outside world know he was a mutant.

Theo was both devastated, and immensely relieved at the same time. Playing violin was his passion, his life, though he knew he could still play it at home, he wouldn't be able to have the same thrill and joy of performing with an orchestra to an audience. However, this meant he wouldn't have to wear dresses and makeup in front of large groups of people, and have to deal with the dysphoria of all of them seeing him as something he truly wasn't.

He spent his teenage years at home, being home schooled and playing violin. He isolated himself from his parents as much as he could. After not very long, with the combined force of being isolated, the trauma of being exploited as a child, and suffering from gender dysphoria, Theo fell into a deep depression. He still practiced violin, and participated in home school when he could, but he became tired all the time, ate very little, found himself feeling worthless. He began to struggle with both anorexia and self harm.

Though he no longer was allowed a violin teacher, Theo continued his studies of the violin on his own, remembering methods of practicing, and using books that he already owned. As a hobby in his eternal boredness, he started composing music on his own. He already had much awareness of the orchestra and of musical theory from his years as a child prodigy, so he took this into his own hands, and picked up a little piano from the piano his parents already owned.

At some point, Theo attempted to come out to his parents as trans. They wouldn't listen at first, they would put him down and say he shouldn't say those things. Eventually though, they came to an understanding that he was trans. However, they never talked about it with him, and refused to call him by a different name or use different pronouns.

Eventually, Theo's parents found out about the self harm. They purchased a safe to put all sharp objects into to prevent him from cutting. This didn't stop him entirely, he was still able to use minor things like pencils, but it did prevent him from doing too much more damage.

Depression and mental illness definitely had an effect on Theo's completely untrained powers, he couldn't practice control due to being confined to the house at all times, and he simply knew that his parents would not allow him to use his powers. Sometimes, during panic attacks or fits of dysphoria, Theo would lose control and create damage in his room with his shock waves. Whenever this happened, he made sure to clean it up as much as he could. His parents never really noticed.

Theo fantasized a lot about transitioning, both socially and medically. He went through different male names in his head, playing around with the idea of using them for himself. He did research on the internet and thought about what he might want to do with his body, surgery and HRT wise. These fantasies, along with playing violin and composing, were often his only coping strategies. However, often they became sad, because he knew he could never have that as long as his parents had control over him.

As he grew into adulthood, Theo's parents did not allow him to obtain a job. Even if it had been years since Theo had mild fame in the British classical music community, his parents still refused to let him tarnish his own representation by appearing to others as a mutant. It became obvious to Theo that it was entirely possible he would spend the rest of his life wasting away under his parents roof.

Theo retained his powers after M Day, and since it was all over the news, his parents asked him if they had stayed. When he said yes, they were disappointed.

Theo was in his mid-late 20s when Charles Xavier sent his telepathic message to the world, and suddenly, he had hope. Krakoa was all over the news, and his parents weren't subtle about their negative feelings towards the island. Theo began to formulate a plan, he would gather his things and his violin, escape when his parents were out of the house, head straight for the nearest gate, and be free on Krakoa. There he could come out as trans, have a fresh start, and be safe from his parents' influence.

This plan was put to an end when the UK stopped their support of Krakoan sovereignty. Now the gates were blocked by British Military, and mutant hate was at an all-time high. Theo again began to feel trapped, and that he would never escape.

When the news comes out that mutants have conquered death, Theo's parents hatred of mutants becomes louder along with the rest of the world. On judgment day, the Progenitor comes to Theo in the form of his old violin teacher, first telling him that he should have gotten the surgery to restore his ears and continued his career as a violinist. He ends up getting the thumbs down, which sends him into a spiral. He and his parents die as the world ends.

Then mutants and humans alike save the world, and Theo is brought back, with his parents. They pretend it never happened.

Present day, Theo gets into an argument with his parents about mutants. It gets heated, and Theo loses control of his powers. He sends a shock wave through the room that knocks his father unconscious. His mother is terrified, and she tries to call the cops. Theo yells at her, threatens that if she calls them, he'll use his powers on her. He's terrified that he's said that, that he's threatened his own mother like that, but this has been a long time coming. He's angry, and he needs to be free.

Theo gathers his violin, and a few other things, steals money from his parents, and leaves. He uses the money to get on a bus to the nearest gate. By the time he gets there, the cops and military are waiting for him. In a fit of desperation and a burst of adrenaline, Theo manages to use his powers to fight them as he pushes his way through the gate. His belongings, including his violin get destroyed, and he gets injured, but he manages to get through the gate.

He passes out not long after he makes it through the gate, but he's immediately spotted by young Krakoans, who rush to the nearest adult and tell them of the new arrival. He is taken to the healing gardens to see Dr. Reyes, she treats his wounds, and notices the scars all over his body, and malnourishment he is experiencing.

When Theo awakes, he freaks out, multiple adults from the Quiet Council are there, trying to ask him who he is, and saying that the British military are after him because of the damage he caused. Theo starts to freak out, overwhelmed and not wanting to tell them who he is, not wanting to say his deadname or have them find out about him being a famous child prodigy. Eventually Dr. Reyes shoos them all away, and decides to ask him questions on her own, about the scars on his body, and how he clearly hasn't been eating much. He decides to tell her that he's trans, and that his parents wouldn't let him transition, or leave the house because he was a mutant. He breaks down crying in front of her, and she comforts him, promising him that here on Krakoa, he'll be allowed to do whatever he wants.

Emma Frost deals with the situation with the British military accordingly, giving her little Krakoan amnesty speech, letting them know that Theo is her responsibility know, and that he was clearly being mistreated by his parents.

After a few days in the Healing Gardens, Theo cuts his hair, it's a bit choppy and messy since he did it himself, but he loves it anyways. Dr. Reyes accompanies him to see the Quiet Council, where he explains his situation. He tells them his name is Theo Chapman (the first time he's ever said this out loud), and that as a kid, he was a child prodigy violinist. He doesn't tell them his deadname. He tells them the story of how when his mutation manifested, his parents shut him off from the world, forbid him from going outside and letting people see he was a mutant. He told them how they wouldn't let him transition to a man, and wouldn't let him work into his adulthood, and this led to him losing control of his powers and hurting his father. He takes on the mutant name "Elvyn," as a nod to his Elven ears.

Emma develops a soft spot for him, she tries to make it seem as if its only because of her interest in him being a violinist, and wanting him to make a name as a musician on the island. While this is true, and she is very excited to have a classical violinist on the island, she also feels a sense of protection over him akin to that she feels of her brother, Christian, and how Christian killed their father after years of Winston's abuse towards Christian for being gay. She invites Theo to live with her in the White Palace, where she promises to help him learn to control his powers, and to help him process his trauma via telepathy.

At first, living at the White Palace, Theo is pretty skittish around everyone who isn't Emma. He trusts her at first though, even if he's a little scared of her. She buys him a really expensive violin, and has Krakoa build him a special room to accommodate the climate needed to keep the instrument safe and soundproofed so that he can practice. He spends most of his time practicing, and has daily sessions with Emma where they either work on his powers or processing his trauma. Sometimes Paige Guthrie comes in to give him support that Emma can't offer as a therapist. Theo meets with Dr. Reyes again, and she helps him start the process of medically transitioning.

He still has trouble eating, he refuses to eat at the dining table with all of the residents of the White Palace, he's a little terrified of Jumbo at first. (It's not really about the four arms, he tries to tell himself, he just has such a loud personality. But the four arms are a little scary too.) Emma is unhappy with this, she has Saucier bring him food every night, but he doesn't always finish it. Emma insists sternly that eventually he's going to have to come down and eat at the table.

When the 2023 Hellfire Gala is coming up, Emma starts talking about having Theo perform something for the guests. Theo is overwhelmed by this idea, since he hasn't performed for an audience since he was a kid, but he doesn't find it in himself to argue with her. Christian overhears this conversation, and later tells Emma that this might be a bit much for Theo after just having gone through all of this stuff. Emma realizes that this is probably true, and that she was just getting a bit excited about incorporating him into the Hellfire Gala traditions. She apologizes the next day to Theo, and says that he doesn't have to perform just yet. He thanks her for this, and says he still wants to go to the Hellfire Gala, just maybe not perform yet.

Theo thanks Christian for talking to his sister about that, and Christian humors Theo and tells him about himself, how he too struggled with mental illness and an abusive parent. Theo didn't realize this about Christian, and they start to connect. Christian starts helping Theo come out of his shell, leading him to finally start attending dinners in the White Palace. Christian shares coping mechanisms with him for self harm and eating struggles that have helped him through the years. They relate to each other a lot, and start to develop romantic feelings for each other.

One day, Christian and Theo almost kiss, but Christian pulls back. Theo suddenly worries that this is because he's trans and Christian is gay, Christian apologizes, and says he needs to think about things before they go any further. He says it's not that he doesn't see Theo as a man, it's that he needs to think about what it might mean for him to be in a relationship with a trans man.

Only a couple days later, Christian approaches Theo and says he's thought about things, and that he honestly doesn't care what it's going to mean, and that he feels a strong connection to Theo already. So they enter a relationship with each other. Christian takes Theo as his date to the Hellfire Gala not long after, and though they stay for a while, Theo leaves early, overwhelmed by all the people.

Over the next year or so, Theo makes more friends on the island, gets top surgery, and makes a decision. He has friends help him record a video, where he makes a statement. He tells the viewer his name, that he's trans, that he was a child prodigy violinist not long ago. He tells the story about how when his mutation developed, his parents made gave him a decision either to get surgery to restore his ears to how they were before and continue to be a violinist pretending not to be a mutant, or to give up his career as a violinist and live an isolated life. He told them how his parents abused him for being both trans and a mutant. He then says that he's going to continue his career as a violinist, if the world will let him. He posts this video on social media, and it goes viral.

Theo never looks at the responses, knowing he is going to be misgendered and deadnamed, but he has Christian tell him how the world is reacting. Many people are proud of him for coming out, and many people are hateful. Some are supportive of trans people, but not of mutants, and still have some nasty things to say even if they recognize his gender. Some people remember him from when he was a kid, and they either adore him and are proud of him for coming out, or are hateful and are ashamed that they were ever a fan.

He stays true to his word, and starts a YouTube channel where he posts himself playing violin. Sometimes he and Christian play concertos together on the piano and violin. Sometimes they play things that Theo has composed, but their most viral video was of them playing Ralph Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending."

Though Theo wishes he could play in concerts around the world, no countries outside of Krakoa will allow him to perform, and even if they did, it likely wouldn't be very safe, as anti-mutant protesters would make their way into the performance. He performs on Krakoa anyhow, and has started offering violin lessons to some of the young mutants.
