Keeping Lag to a Minimum...

I was chatting about a few things I do to combat lag over on discord and realised I do quite a bit of maintenance to reduce lag/load times. I decided to write em all down and before I knew it, I had a big ol' list. Here's hoping it helps!

Save/File Tips:

Clear your caches (located in the same spot as your mod folder fyi) I usually delete the onlinethumbnailcache, avatarcache and localthumbcache caches every time I exit the game, the main one to delete regularly is the localthumbcache file, they're just temporary files but it can get pretty big after a while.. if you're having any mod issues, particularly ui ones, it's always worth deleting that to see if it helps.

Remove any saves you're not using from your saves folder, and keep an eye on save file sizes. In my experience, any saves over around 30-40mb start to get a bit laggy. Things that bump this size up are the amount of townies in game and the amount of lots/objects in the world.

Regarding the above point, I regularly bulldoze lots I don't need anymore, just to save the game from having to cope with extra shit to load in the background and reduce save file bloat.

Similarly, I delete a lot of unnecessary townies. Also, try to keep the amount of outfits on townies to a minimum, ain't no townie need four swimsuit outfits, the game will thank you..

If you have cheats enabled you can usually shift-click/delete object on things like random coffee cups or stray cupcakes sims foolishly drop around the world (or eat em.. whatever tickles ur pickle) just get rid!

Whilst we're keeping objects in game to a minimum.. I try to clear sims inventories now and then, including townies. You can do this via mccc even if you're not currently playing that household by heading to MC Cleaner -> Sell Sim Inventory/Sell Household Inventory. RANDOM LUMPS OF CLAY BEGONE!

Think of a save file like a lot.. the more objects in it, the laggier it gets! Try your best to remove anything or anyone unnecessary where you can.

Hit "Save As" instead of "Save" now and then - the more you overwrite a save, the more chance it has of going wonky, treat your game to a fresh one now and then and remove the old one from your saves folder (maybe don't delete it right away in case you wanna roll back, keep it somewhere safe).

If you can (although ik it can be a pain) set up a new/fresh save, you'd be surprised how bogged down old ones can get! For legacy players, it's usually best to do this whenever you have a small family to save yourself some pain, since you can just save the household and take em to a new save (you will lose sims inventories/household inventories/relationships with sims outside the household tho so beware! Pictures/other collectables can be saved to a lot however, and you can always cheat back relationship bits etc.. bit of a last resort but new saves are shiny and fast!)

Make sure your Screenshots/Video folders are empty - move em somewhere else, it works, trust me. If you have a lot of custom music installed try n' clear some of those out too.. the smaller that Sims 4 directory is, the better.

Delete any last exceptions/last crashes (same spot as your mod folder again) you don't need em unless you're planning to upload em somewhere for help.

Settings Etc:

If you get a bad lag spike, opening the main menu and/or saving can randomly stop this. If it doesn't, try exiting the game, clearing your localthumbcache and restarting.

Clearing all notifications from the game panel can also help.

If you can, close all other apps and background apps you don't need whilst playing, ts4 is super memory hungry so it can definitely help.

The GraphicsRules Override file by Simp4Sims can reduce lag/latency and make your game look a little better in the process!

Srslysims Simulation Lag Fix mod can help reduce lag too (if you've altered the game speed via mccc tho, don't use this unless you plan on resetting it to default).

If you aren't keen on, or barely use a pack, consider disabling it.

Not ideal, especially for those of us taking screenshots, but lowering the graphics settings whilst playing definitely helps.

If you use re/g-shade, consider switching it off whilst playing and only turn it on for screenshots.

A clean and tidy pc/laptop runs better in general. Remove anything you're not using/don't need anymore to free up space, remove temp files, clean up your folders now and again etc etc.. especially that dreaded mod folder, speaking of...

Managing Mods:

SORT OUT YOUR MODS FOLDER FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.. skdsjdjs it doesn't have to be immaculate but at the very least try n' clear it out now n' then. Also try to separate your script mods/overrides from the rest, patch days don't need to be so stressful ;-;

Personally, I don't merge my mods; if something breaks it's much harder to pinpoint! It makes it easier to find/delete specific mods too.. and let's face it, there's usually one or two items in that set you could do without lmaooo.. also, don't think it helps much tbh! Yeah you could say the game doesn't have to work as hard to load merged files but that's debatable, it's still the same amount of items/polys at the end of the day ¯\(°_o)/¯

If you like merging files and/or see results from doing so, you can merge stuff you definitely know you're never getting rid of, especially CAS/BB stuff.. but steer clear of merging gameplay/script mods! If a merged file seems to be the culprit when using the 50/50 method, try unmerging it and 50/50ing it again! You might not need to get rid of everything if something's borked.

Bulk Rename Utility can be used to remove all spaces and special characters from your mod files, the game doesn't particularly like loading those so it'll thank you.

The Sims 4 Mod Manager is a great way to sort through your mods, you can easily see, move and delete files from here (not great for build/buy, poses etc as thumbnails are usually missing, but great for CAS stuff). An extra hint with this that I've noticed is that if any of my mods get renamed with [D1] at the beginning after looking through them via the mod manager, it means it's a duplicate file so you can get rid.

I also use the Sims 4 Tray Importer to help me sort through mods. Simply save a sim/lot with any cc you don't want and find it in the importer, you can then go through all the cc in the cc tab and delete/sort it (I also use this to sort cc if a bunch has the wrong tags etc, makes it easier to find in my folders by saving em to a lot or w/e - it also spots duplicates which is handy).

It's a ballache, but the 50/50 method is tried and tested if you're having issues.

I like to keep an abandoned cc folder tucked away somewhere, that way you can remove mods willy nilly without stressing about losing them. If you change your mind, you can always grab it back!

oscar tried to give you space but eventually couldn't take it anymore. he quietly padded through the hallway to your shared bedroom, and his heart broke when he pressed his ear up against the door and heard you crying. he knew it was his fault, that he snapped and was too harsh. he slowly opened the door and called your name. upon seeing you, looking so deflated, his heart broke. all you wanted in that moment was to be held, and he could sense that. he kept you close to him, his hand lightly holding your face into his neck. you felt him press soft kisses to your hairline and heard him mumble a million apologies until your sobs died down. when you finally pulled away to look at him, you saw his own tears and he gave you a final apology, this one stronger and more raw.

ᡣ𐭩 lando norris...

lando has never been in tune with his emotions. that night in particular, he was angry. so, so angry. he wasn't angry at you, but it sure seemed like it as he screamed about all the things he wished you'd done differently that day. you start to cry and he realizes what he's done, but simply walks away. he left for a little bit, driving through monaco and thinking. when he gets back, he finds you cooking dinner. just like he had barked at you to do. he walked up behind you and slowly pulled you into his arms. his heart shattered when you flinched at his touch. he tells you he knows he was out of line, that he wasn't angry with you, and that he understands if you can't forgive him right now. he sat across from you timidly at dinner, what a contrast from what you had experienced an hour ago. you wanted to forgive him so desperately, but needed more time. lando sat next to you while you watched your favorite show, and apologized one more time before you went to get ready for bed. he settled down next to you and almost died of happiness when you reached for him. he uttered one last apology, this time with forgiveness from the other side.

ᡣ𐭩 daniel ricciardo...

daniel doesn't screw up often, and that almost makes it more painful when he does. he is the quickest to realize the impact of his actions, immediately wishing he could eat his words. right after, he froze for a second. as soon as he regained thought, he walked towards you and pulled you into a hug. arms around your waist, his chin on top of your head. "i'm so sorry, my love," he whispered into your hair. daniel is easy to forgive because you can tell how genuine he is. he has the emotional intelligence to be able to identify his mistakes, fix them, and then be able to salvage the evening. he makes dinner and you two ate happily together. to finish off the night, he fucked you soft and sweet, whispering dirty yet loving things into your ear.

ᡣ𐭩 max verstappen...

max had a hard time growing up. everyone knows that, but especially you. sometimes the stress of everything gets too much and he just breaks. unfortunately, sometimes he also ends up hurting his favorite person in the world. if you waited long enough max would go and apologize, but it works better if you go to him. you didn't say anything, instead opting to quietly approach him on the couch and snuggle up to him. you could feel him relax the second your body touches his. "i'm so sorry. that wasn't fair to you," he murmured into your hair as he gave your hand a gentle squeeze. it took time to get to this stage in your relationship, but now max can talk things out with you. not yell, talk. talk with undertones of understanding, compassion, and love. he must have told you he loved you a million times while you sat there together, and he would tell you a million more times to get you to believe it.

ᡣ𐭩 carlos sainz...

you had already moved to your bedroom, seeking the comfort of silence, but carlos was still standing in the kitchen. the look on his face was comically priceless. you could see the wheels turning as he realized how badly he had fucked up. the second he snapped out of it, he chased you down the hallway and opened the door as fast as he could. he knelt down on the ground and took your hands in his as you sat on the edge of the bed. you were crying, and he hated himself for being the reason. he knows there is no excuse and told you so, but still explained what's been going on with him. after he apologized one last time, he asked if the two of you were ok. the second you nodded your head, he got up and walked took you into his arms, holding you there in fear of you slipping through his fingers. he would die if he ever lost you.

ᡣ𐭩 ollie bearman...

ollie is the sweetest boyfriend ever. there has never been any yelling for him to apologize for. however with the new steps in his career, he is spending a lot of time away from home, and away from you. that night he had gotten home from a huge weekend. he greeted you with a sweet kiss and then pulled you in for a hug and just held you there for a little bit. to his absolute horror, you started to cry. "no, no it's okay. what's wrong, baby?" his sweet tone made you nauseous, because while he had done nothing technically wrong, you had felt abandoned and been imagining his return for what felt like forever. and now you were crying instead of eating the dinner you had made. he lead you to the couch and continued to hold you, patiently waiting for you to explain why you were so upset. when you told him, you could see the pain on his face. "oh, baby, i'm so sorry," he rushed to say. he knew exactly what to say after that. exactly what to promise and plan. he didn't you let go for the rest of the night unless absolutely necessary, going as far as to rest his chin on your shoulder while you got ready for bed. you both slept like babies that night because you were finally back together. the best part? you wouldn't be spending so much time alone in the future.

y/n can clearly remember when her crush on yuki tsunoda started:

oscar had only talked about the japanese male a few times, his mother absolutely loved him. when the australian grand prix came around, oscar had ( unwillingly ) invited his own teammate along with yuki tsunoda, daniel couldn't join them since he was going to spend time with his family, but sent a gift basket to thank her for the invite.

y/n was very nervous about interacting with the two drivers since she never strayed too far from the garage or hospitality when attending the races.

she was busy chatting with hattie at the table when they arrived. oscar greeted his friends and guided them through the house, y/n making sure to keep her head down and pretend to type away as they came in.

“thought you only had three sisters?” lando asked once they were out of ear shot

oscar shrugged, “we grew up together, it’s basically the same thing”

“no, it isn’t” lando argued

“yes, it is”

“no. it isn’t”

while the two mclaren drivers argued, yuki greeted oscar’s mum to brought him into a hug before ushering him out of the kitchen and refusing his help. yuki sat down at the table and smiled at y/n who had looked up to see who sat across from him.

“i’m yuki” he reached his hand out and y/n wiped her slightly sweaty hands onto her skirt / shorts / pants

“so, how do you know, oscar?”

“we went to primary together”

y/n thought that yuki was quite sweet for talking to her, but figured it would change the moment oscar or lando came — but, it didn’t. yuki was curious and wanted their conversation to go on forever, he liked talking with her and found himself glancing in her direction every few seconds.

nicole noticed this and couldn’t help, but let out a giggle.

since then, her mission had been clear: get y/n and yuki to date.

it was no secret to fans that nicole piastri absolutely adored yuki and made jokes about her basically adopting him into the family since oscar is considered a leclerc now. every time y/n would accompany the piastri family to a race, nicole would drag her off to see yuki before making up some excuse to leave them alone ( despite all the staff members that were also around ). y/n knew what nicole was doing, but kept quiet.

“y/n!” she looked up from her phone to see who had called out her name and smiled at seeing yuki jogging towards her

“hi, yuki” he reciprocated her smile before stopping just a few centimetres in front

“oscar’s mum just came by, but you didn’t, so i came to find you” she felt herself grow warm at his words

“oh, sorry, must’ve been too caught up with oscar”

an uncomfortable silence fell between them as everyone else moved around the pair, completely unaware of their thoughts.

“should i walk away now?”

“should i tell her what oscar’s mum told me?”

yuki cleared his throat and it made y/n pull her eyes away from the slightly cloudy sky.

“so — oscar’s mum told me that you have a crush on me…”

y/n’s eyes widened as yuki nervously played with his hands before continuing on.

“she did what? should i run? i should probably run. how did she even know? was i that obvious or was yuki oblivious? fuck —“ her internally monologue was cut off by yuki speaking

“sorry, um, if you’re not busy after the race. do you want to eat with me?”

“oh! um, sure” yuki smiled and y/n tried to reciprocate it, but her beating heart didn’t stop

“okay. um, so, i probably have to go back now” he glanced down at his watch and y/n nodded silently already taking a few steps back

“i’ll see you later”

“bye” y/n said quietly while waving at him

oscar looked at his mother with a weird expression as she explained her plan to get y/n with yuki.

“he likes her back” oscar didn’t believe her

“mum, i don’t know”

“don’t be a wet blanket, oscar” one of his sisters spoke as she walked past him and he just sighed

nicole gave her son a smug smile as she watched yuki and y/n from inside mclaren’s hospitality. he shook his head, not believing his mother’s faith in yuki liking y/n — he didn’t even know she liked him, but was brushed off by his mother who wasn’t surprised.

“hey, y/n” oscar called out as she made her way towards them

“hey, osc” he rolled his eyes at the nickname

“what were you and tsunoda talking about?”

“he asked me on a date?” his mother smiled widely at her words

“that’s sounds more like a question…” he trailed off making nicole glare at him, upset that he’s ruining the fantasy of her ship

“well, he asked me to eat with him after the race. it might be cause nicole told him that i liked him-“ she gave the older woman a look, but she pretended not to notice “-but, yeah” oscar just sighed, again
