YEAR OF THE DRAGON (1985) Grade: C+
Ahead of it's time. The script is great. The production didn't blow me away. Loved the leads, you get lost in them during scenes. Raymond J Barry anyone?! Gritty film, probably be made more polish now.

[“Feminists’ discomfort with proximity to sex workers reached a fever pitch during the so-called ‘sex wars’ of the 1980s and 1990s. In this era, radical feminists locked horns with ‘pro-sex’ feminists over the issues of pornography and prostitution. The radical-feminist perspective on sex work holds that it reproduces (and is itself a product of) patriarchal violence against women. This analysis could extend to all heterosexual sexual behaviours, as well as public sex and kink (commonly known as BDSM, for ‘bondage, domination, submission/sadism, masochism’).
The focus in this era was on censoring porn and ‘raising awareness’ rather than addressing prostitution through criminal law directly, but a nonetheless vehement anti-prostitution stance became commonplace in the feminist movement. Writer Janice Raymond stated that ‘prostitution is rape that’s paid for’, while Kathleen Barry said buying and selling sex was ‘destructive of human life’.
The defence of porn and prostitution that followed in response was based on ideas of sexual liberation through nonconformist sexual expression, such as BDSM and the ‘queering’ of lesbian and gay identities. Many ‘pro-sex’ or ‘sex-radical’ feminists posited that not only could watching porn be gratifying and educational, it could upend patriarchal control over women’s sexual expression. Moreover, that the sex industry was sticking two fingers up at the institution of marriage, highlighting the hypocrisy of conservative, monogamous heteronormativity. While some people who fought for sexual liberation were sex workers – such as LGBTQ and AIDS activist Amber Hollibaugh – many sex radicals advanced their arguments from a non–sex worker perspective. Defending porn often meant defending watching it, rather than performing in it.
Radical feminists famously described sex radicals as ‘Uncle Toms’* pandering to the primacy of male sexuality, while they in turn were derided as ‘prudes’ invested in preserving sexual puritanism. Rather than focussing on the ‘work’ of sex work, both pro-sex feminists and anti-prostitution feminists concerned themselves with sex as symbol. Both groups questioned what the existence of the sex industry implied for their own positions as women; both groups prioritised those questions over what material improvements could be made in the lives of the sex workers in their communities. Stuck in the domain of sex and whether it is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for women (and adamant that it could only be one or the other) it was all too easy for feminists to think of The Prostitute only in terms of what she represented to them. They claimed ownership of sex worker experiences in order to make sense of their own.
Anti-prostitution activist Dorchen Leidholdt spoke to this feminist impulse; ‘this de-individualized, de-humanized being has the function of representing generic woman … She stands in for all of us, and she takes the abuse that we are beginning to resist.’ It was in this context that former prostitute Andrea Dworkin’s work became highly influential in the movement, and set a new tone for criticism of sex work. The Prostitute, she said
lives the literal reality of being the dirty woman. There is no metaphor. She is the woman covered in dirt, which is to say that every man who has ever been on top of her has left a piece of himself behind … She is perceived as, treated as – and I want you to remember this, this is real – vaginal slime.
Her confrontational writing style – and her experiences in the sex trade – helped to legitimise and normalise similar usage of graphic and misogynist language in ‘feminist’ discussions of sex workers and their bodies. Barry, a contemporary of Dworkin, likened prostitutes to blow-up dolls, ‘complete with orifices for penetration and ejaculation’, while Leidholdt wrote that ‘stranger after stranger use[s] her body as a seminal spittoon … What other job is so deeply gendered that one’s breasts, vagina and rectum constitute the working equipment?’ Academics Cecilie Høigård and Liv Finstad wrote of women who sell sex that ‘at the core they experience themselves as only cheap whores’.
Sex working feminists have long found themselves harshly excluded, and not only by de-humanising language in academia, but by explicit lack of invitation into spaces. Kate Millett recalls a feminist conference on prostitution, held in 1971. Disgruntled working women arrived to demand a seat at the table: An inadvertent masterpiece of tactless precipitance, the title of the day’s program was inscribed on leaflets for our benefit: ‘Towards the Elimination of Prostitution’. The panel of experts included everyone but prostitutes … all hell broke loose – between the prostitute and the movement. Because, against all likelihood, prostitutes did in fact attend the conference … They had a great deal to say about the presumption of straight women who fancied they could debate, decide or even discuss what was their situation and not ours.
Unlike the hostile environment of radical feminism, sex radicals were welcoming and supportive to sex workers. This influence helped shape the movement’s growth. In 1974, COYOTE hosted the first National Hookers’ Convention. The bright orange flyer nodded to the way prostitutes had been shunned from the women’s movement: emblazoned with a hand touching a vulva, it proclaimed, ‘Our Convention Is Different: We Want Everyone to Come’”]

I'm writing Flash (TV) fic and reading Dracula Daily and so here's a Flash Dracula AU that I'm not going to write:
(Warnings: Major Character Death, Child Death, Bad Doctoring. It's a Dracula AU)
Casting:
1. Kamilla Hwang as Mina Murray
Our opening character, currently holidaying in [Whitby] with a dear, dear friend of her fiancé who should be joining them any day now, but he doesn't seem to be sending any letters...
2. Caitlin Snow as Lucy Westenra
Wanted a nice relaxing time at the seaside really getting to know her bestie's new fiancée and thinking about her own upcoming wedding, but her mother is clearly trying to hide something and her own fiancé's father is ill and her best friend appears to be missing and now she appears to have fallen back into her old sleepwalking ways...
3. Cisco Ramon as Jonathan Harker
Kamilla's fiancé and recently made a full solicitor. This will be an easy first job they told him. Travel overseas, get some signatures on this paperwork, he'll be home in no time.
He has been having The Worst Month
4. Ronnie Raymond as Arthur Holmward
Caitlin's fiancé. Loves her so much. Would be with her but his dad's not been doing so well
5. Julian Albert as Quincey Morris
Adventurer. Ronnie's old bud. Also in love with Caitlin but just really, really happy for his friends. Down to shoot a bat.
6. Hunter Zoloman as Jack Seward
There's got to be a twist somewhere, right? He's the head of an asylum. He should not be in charge, really, especially not with that one patient he's dubbed his 'favourite'. Also in love with Caitlin. Bitter she did not choose him. But there's an idea for how to change their fates...
7. Iris West as Abraham Van Helsing
Not a doctor but a journalist, Iris has ended up studying local legends and mythic creatures ever since the loss of her daughter and the rapid decline in her husband's health. She's something of a vampire expert- not that she believes in them, but understanding might give her a way to help her husband. She did not expect it to actually be practical knowledge, but then she hears from Zoloman about the state of his friend Caitlin and maybe there's some truth to the tales after all
8. Barry Allen as Renfield
The latest patient admitted to Zoloman's asylum and his latest source of fascination, Barry is convinced his mother was not murdered by his father but by some monstrous creature she managed to save eleven-year-old Barry from, but one he could not save his own daughter from, and Barry has sworn revenge. Probably has some pet spiders. He gets lonely. Doing some dubious science in his cell. Also gets bored and really, really wants to kill this one guy.
9. Eddie Thawne as Patrick Hennessey
Actually takes good care of everyone in the asylum. Feels bad for Barry. Hopefully someone will promote him when Zoloman winds up dead. Knows a little more than he's letting on
10. And, of course, Eobard Thawne as Dracula
A massive dick
Notes:
We get the reveals as Kamilla does- so what happened to Cisco at Castle Thawne when she reads Cisco's journal, what happened to Caitlin when she gets to read the notes, ect.
This includes the reveal Hunter Zoloman is the one working for Thawne
He's the one who lets Thawne into the asylum to go after Cisco- who was left behind out of concern for his mental health
Luckily Eddie had the bright idea to enlist Barry's help when he figured out what was going on
Zoloman had to bright idea to think Thawne would a) make him immortal and b) make Caitlin immortal and c) this would mean she'd pick him instead of Ronnie
Only Iris knows what this mysterious new "Killer Frost" wandering the nights is and stops her before she can kill anyone, with help from Ronnie and Julian
Barry does fight Thawne and gets very injured for his troubles. This means he's left behind with Eddie when the gang go on a "let's track down Eobard Thawne and murder him" quest, but he does live (it seems unfair for Iris to lose Nora and Barry)
Zoloman's like super dead though. Eobard kills him so he doesn't let any secrets slip not realising Zoloman went and recorded everything in his diary.
Caitlin's dead too. Sorry. Maybe she can be a ghost
Everyone gets a go at stabbing Eobard Thawne

"FLEEING CONVICTS IN RAID," New York Daily News. August 3, 1929. Page 2 & 4. ---- LOOT BEDFORD PAYROLL AND FLEE IN AUTO ---- MINISTER rumblings of new deadly prison insurrections together with the echo of the Auburn battle in a holdup staged by four of the escaped convicts, kept the nationwide penitentiary revolution still aflame yesterday.
Arthur Barry, master mind of the Auburn reign of terror, and three who escaped with him, yesterday struck swiftly and escaped at Bedford, N. Y.
Flee With $1,521 Loot. They rolled up to the offices of the Adam Faber Construction company at Bedford, covered Pay master R. R. T. Erickson with gus and fled in an automobile with his wrist watch and $1,521.
Erickson later identified pictures of the fugitive Auburn convicts those of the gunmen who robbed him.
Upset by the reign of flame and bloodshed in prisons throughout the country, seven Sing Sing guards have resigned their posts, it was revealed. All were numbered among the twenty-five new guards Warden Lewis E. Lawes hired on July L
Sing Hing on Alert. Although tension among the prisoners at Sing Sing on the verge of rebellion Thursday morning-relaxed yesterday, the extra precautions taken to guard against revolt were not abandoned by officials.
The air was charged with apprehension at Raymond st. jail Brooklyn, last night, however Warden Harry Honeck, after a special round of inspection, immediately stationed an emergency squad of ten patrolman outside the walls of the old jail.
All visitors were given an extra thorough search and arrangements were made for a special riot squad to be called at the first hint of in- subordination.
U. S. Prison Riot Laid To Food, Heat and Crowd. Washington, D. C., Aug. 2 (U.P.). - Austin H. MacCormick, assistant superintendent of federal prisons, was ordered by the justice department today to proceed immediately to the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kas., scene of a riot yesterday in which one prisoner was killed and three wounder.
Overcrowding, lack of sufficient work to occupy the inmates, excessive heat, and word of riots in eastern penitentiaries, were ascribed today by Stanford Bates, federal superintendent of prisons, as the reason for the insurrection.
Making public a complete report of the incident Bates said it is evident Warden White and his guards forestalled what might have been a much more serious outbreak.
A checkup has shown, he said, that no men escaped, no guards were injured, no guns were found in possession of inmates, and the insurrection was entirely futile.
The prison was designed to accommodate 2,000 prisoners and the population today is 3,770.
Stern Measures Check Unrest at Leavenworth. Leavenworth, Kas., Aug. 2 (AP). Unrest among prisoners smouldered today, but was held in check by stern measures. Leaders of yesterday's convict uprising were singled out and placed in close confinement.

Behold!!!
The Round 1 contestants!!!
You will notice that there is no clearly defined bracket yet, but there will be going forth from round 2. I just want to see how popular certain characters actually are before I set all the forthcoming rounds in stone. You will also notice that there are some polls with more that two options. That's because we have so many cats and so little opportunities to make an even bracket. And one more thing that some of you who know their way around the math of bracket-making might pick up on: round 1 consists of 126 polls, while we're going to require 128 contestants for round 2. That would mean that some polls will result in multiple winners (either 2 winners for 2 polls or a whooping 3 for a single one). And now, finally, the pairs and groups:

Unless I fluck up putting posts on timer, but let's just hope for the best.
