The dragon prince is coming back! In honor of the new trailers, here is a redraw of an old piece but with Callum’s new design. I had to make on up for Rayla tho… wonder what she will look like! I kinda have the feeling Rayla and Callum’s relationship is one of awkward ex’s who still love each other- solely based off the time skip and end of the graphic novel. What do you think?

Unexpected Cuddles (Rayla x Reader)

Warnings: None.

Genre: Fluff.

Fandom: The Dragon Prince.

Word Count: 1086

We had left the castle only a week ago. Stil, it felt like an eternity ago, not only because of the many things that happened along the way, but also because we hadn’t been able to sleep on a proper bed. We were all a bit grumpy about that, but we didn’t complain much; what we were doing was important for everyone.

We managed to reach the top of the Cursed Caldera, where we met Lujanne. She wasn’t able to help us with the egg, so we were forced to make it hatch. It was a crazy experience, especially when it seemed like Rayla would fly away because of the wind, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so nervous and scared before. But it was worth it, and I never thought a little dragon could be that cute, I guess I was wrong. We were all still concentrating on Zym when a pink comet-thing passed through the sky, it was really beautiful, and I thought Lujanne had something to do with it but when I looked at her face, I could tell she seemed worried about it.

“I think it’s best if we go inside,” she said, looking briefly at each of us. “It’s late, you should get some sleep.”

We agreed with her and stood up, waiting for her to tell us where ‘inside’ was.

“Follow me,” and we did. We reached a place with a few constructions, which I assumed were different rooms. As soon as we got there, the kids ran inside and crashed on the beds, clearly exhausted. “I guess they made their choice already. I’m afraid two of you will have to share a bed.” Callum, Rayla and I looked at each other, definitely a bit nervous about the situation.

“I, um, I’m used to sleeping near Ezran so I think it’s best if you guys share,” proposed Callum, trying to sound convincing but giving me a little wink and smile. I wanted to punch him in the face, I knew he knew about my (not so) little crush on Rayla so it was very obvious what he was doing, at least to me.

“Uh, yeah, okay, I don’t- That’s fine.” I tried to sound calm but clearly failed as I tried to hide the little blush that was forming in my face.

Rayla smiled briefly at me and started walking to the room. I followed her, still feeling extremely nervous. I literally felt like my knees would suddenly stop working and I couldn’t ignore the butterflies I felt in my stomach.

“Well, let’s get to bed,” she whispered when we entered the bedroom. Ellis was already asleep on the other side of the room so we tried to be quiet; we didn’t want to wake her up.

We got in bed, both lying flat on our backs and keeping distance between each other.

“This is a bit weird,” I admitted and she chuckled before agreeing. “We can put the pillow in the middle,” I said since there was only one.

“Okay, that’s fine with me,” she agreed.

We lied down there, with our backs facing each other, for what felt like eternity. I was really tired but for some reason I couldn’t fall asleep, and it was starting to get a bit cold. I grabbed the blanket and pulled it a little in order to cover my body without completely stealing it from Rayla. Her breathing was soft so I thought she was asleep and I didn’t  have any intention of waking her up either.

I finally found a comfortable position when I felt some movement behind me, and then the blanket was practically gone. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath while I made a mental note as a reminder to kill Callum later, and I got closer to Rayla, trying to cover my body a little more. When that wasn’t enough, I started pulling softly again, but I was cut by a voice.

“Stop it,” she groaned, clearly a bit annoyed.

“I-I’m sorry, but- Um, you kind of have all the blanket to yourself.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, I-I didn’t realize,” she apologized and covered me a bit more. “The blanket is not big enough for the two of us,” she commented quietly while laughing a bit.

“No, you’re right. Maybe we should just cuddle,” I muttered, immediately hoping that she hadn’t heard me.

There was a silence between us and I relaxed, thinking she hadn’t listened to what I said. 

“Okay, let’s do it,” she said after sitting up in the bed, waiting for me to move.

“W-What? I was just kidding, we don’t have to.-”

“No, we don’t have to but it would be easier. Come on,” she interrupted me and grabbed me by the arm to help me get up.

Suddenly, there was an awkward silence again as we looked at each other, waiting for something to happen.

“Should we-? I mean, do you-? H-how should we-?” I was cut off mid sentence by her grabbing my arm once again as she turned around, making me hold her as she put my arm next to her face, pressing her back against my chest.

I was a complete mix of emotions. I was speechless, nervous and even a bit happy. She caressed my hand with her thumb and I relaxed a bit, bringing my face a bit closer to her neck.

“Sorry, I- Here, excuse me,” I said and then moved her hair a bit, stopping it from tickling and itching my nose.

She lifted her head a bit to let me adjust her hair and then she moved a little closer to me, if that was even possible.

“This is nice,” she admitted and I agreed with a soft noise.

We lied down like that for a few minutes, and I could feel some soft strokes in my hand from time to time, which made me smile every single time.

“You know, I never imagined you as the little spoon kind of girl,” I said suddenly to tease her since I was starting to feel a bit awkward because of the silence, even though we were supposed to fall asleep.

“Oh, shut up,” she mumbled, a bit annoyed before giving me a soft kick and laughing a little.

I laughed a bit too and decided to try and go to sleep for once and for all. The only thing I remember before slumbering away, was Rayla giving me a soft kiss on my hand.
