I'm about halfway into Ravensong and I feel like the actual plot is really kicking off and though I had to work a little to get through the first half, I do like that we get the time to get to know everyone properly and to feel like we're somehow part of the pack, as it were.
SPOILER AHEAD
I think every book is from a different character's pov, but I would love to have another Ox pov now that he's changed.

hey soph! i don’t know if you’ve talked about this in here before, but i really do love your writing style and your storytelling and i was wondering if you have any book recommendations or favorite writers you enjoy and feel inspired by! i’ve been struggling to find books i feel connected to the same way i do with fic so i was wondering if you have any recs for that :) sorry to bother in case this is too nosy!!!
Okay, I have talked about this before but i'm gonna give a slightly different version of this list, that's sort of suited to like, books i think are specifically good bridge between fanfiction and published works and also that i love (i am sure i have recommended all of these in some way before BUT)
The Green Creek Series by TJ Klune (Wolfsong, Ravensong, Heartstrong, Brothersong) it's queer, found family and werewolves, but very hp-esque in the type of fantasy, like our world but there just happen to be werewolves (and also witches), and if you like the way i write you'll probably like Klune because we have very similar styles, in general just an absolute gem of a series
Villains series by V. E Schawb (Vicious, Vengeful), angsty anti-heroes and complicated friendships for dayyyysssss, i feel like if you like Regulus you will appreciate the protagonists of this series - victor
Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell (Carry On, Wayward Son, Anyway the Wind Blows) started very much as a parody of drarry fanfiction, but by the second book turns into a genuinely excellent stand alone series (not that the first book isn't great, it IS, i just think it plays into the gimmick a bit more, where as the second and third books are just sincerely good), but wizard-orphan-chosen-one falls in love with his school nemesis and they fight the big baddy and deal with the consequences etc.
A Gathering of Shadows series by V.E Schawb (A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light) probably the most traditional fantasy, the first book drags, the second two are PHENOMENAL, you have triwizard tournament meets hunger games, gay pirate queer love story, brother angst, the whole shebang!

The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi - 5/5 stars
This book managed to rip my heart out at least 3 times. I loved it. Medieval enemies-to-lovers slow burn; very romantic. Kinda read like fanfiction at times but in a good way. 10/10 would read a follow-up love story about Arundel and Captain Wekena. If you like Captive Prince, give this one a try.
Reforged by Seth Haddon - 4/5 stars
Pretty good bodyguard romantasy. Ironically CS Pacat blurbed this one (another am-I-in-the-matrix moment). The world was interesting and I enjoyed the politics, though they're definitely not as complicated as other SFF politics I've gone feral over (see: Captive Prince, Winter's Orbit, A Memory Called Empire). I ordered the sequel after I finished this.
The Doctor's Date by Heidi Cullinan - 4/5 stars
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars
Where do I start? I love, love, LOVE A Marvellous Light. It's one of my favorite books ever. None of the rest of the books in the trilogy could live up to it, really, because it's so good. You'll notice I rated this one 5 stars though, because quite honestly I fell prey to a bit of The Academy Paying The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Its Due syndrome. I did love this book and thought it was better than A Restless Truth (which I still loved!) but part of that is, quite frankly, just due to the fact that I prefer m/m romance to f/f romance.
Anyway. This was such a good finale to the trilogy. I loved that the romance was a giant middle finger to purity cultists. I loved that one of the mains was Italian. I loved finally getting the story of what happened to the Alston twins. One thing I thought was really cool was how, viewed from the outside, you totally get why Edwin is such a loner. I really admire from a writing perspective how Marske pulled that off.
I feel like there's a lot to be said about what Marske was trying to SAY with this book, but I definitely need to reread it first before I can articulate any of it. The purity culture stuff is obvious, but the magic system too. I feel like Jack when he's almost able to connect everything in his mind into a bigger idea, but he can't quite get there.
I've got a special edition from Illumicrate coming, so I'll be rereading it when I have that.
Oh also, this book was the embodiment of all that one tumblr post -
The Guncle by Steven Rowley - 5/5 stars
I saw this in bookstores for years before I finally gave in and bought it. The blurb makes it sound insufferable and twee. Ignore the blurb. This was such a good book about grief and learning how to live again after terrible loss.
I Like Me Better by Robby Weber - 4/5 stars
At last I can stop getting the Lauv song stuck in my head whenever I set eyes on this book (it's stuck in my head as I type this). Pretty standard-issue YA, but it was cute and had a good message.
The Stagsblood King by Gideon E Wood - 4/5 stars
Another book about moving on from grief! This is the second book in a trilogy. When I was trying to determine if I wanted to read on beyond book 1, I scoured the internet for information about what happens in books 2 and 3. Eventually I decided, hell, I enjoyed book 1 well enough, even if what I want to happen in the rest of the trilogy doesn't happen, they're worth reading. SO, to that end, I will tell anyone looking for info that Tel gets romantically involved with a new man in this one, which, eh. I still want him to somehow end up with Vared. It was still quite good though.
In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune - DNF at pg 82
So funnily, we were at the bookstore the day I was about to start reading this, and my wife pointed out Ravensong (also by Klune) to me and said, "Do you have this one?" I made a face and said, "That's an older one of his books and I'm wary of his early work after that horrible Verania series. I don't think I've ever read an author as hit or miss as TJ Klune."
I wrote the above when I was 60 pages in and now I have officially DNFed this. Listen. You know how in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi was clearly given free rein to do whatever he wanted, so all of his worst impulses made it to the final cut unchecked? Yeah. That's what this book is like.
Here's my Storygraph review: I see Klune is officially Too Big To Edit now. This book has exactly the same problem that his awful Verania series had—a joke that's funny at first but quickly grows tiresome when it's repeated five times per page. The emphasis on Victor's asexuality was also weird and read like Klune was just super proud of himself for writing an ace character.
Lion's Legacy by LC Rosen - 4.25/5 stars
Queer, YA Indiana Jones, but less #problematic. This book had some eerie similarities to my own archaeology adventure novel(s), which made me wonder half-seriously if I somehow know Lev Rosen? Anyway, I feared this would be very heavy-handed and not nuanced on archaeology's ethical dilemmas, since it's YA and also the current culture is to view said dilemmas as completely black and white with no nuance, but I was pleasantly surprised. It manages to examine that, queerness, and daddy issues, plus has time to be a genuinely fun and exciting adventure story. Highly recommend.
Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black by Ismail Lagardien - 4/5 stars
I picked up this memoir in a bookstore at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg as research for Six Places to Fall in Love, since Percy is coloured. A pretty brutal read, but good, and definitely good research. The author was a photographer and journalist through the most violent years of apartheid.
The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson - 5/5 stars
Two nonfiction books in a row?? This is the second book by Erik Larson I've read, the first being the excellent The Devil in the White City. I'm not, in general, all that interested in WWII when it comes to military history, but this book is about the day to day lives of Churchill and the people surrounding him (with brief stops to visit FDR and high-ranking Nazis sprinkled throughout). This is a very, very good book, and I recommend reading it if only as a reminder of the resilience and bravery of ordinary people under terrifying circumstances.
Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars
Holy shit. Holy shit is this book good. Imagine the love child of Lost, Person of Interest, and Battlestar Galactica, but queer and with multiverse shenanigans thrown in.
I need everyone to read this book. Now. Yesterday. Get to it.

Book List Time!!!
And with that I have 10 give or take books to discuss. Now I’m up to over 30 books since May woooo telling tumblr about each one has been a great motivator so I hope my reviews and list help people out in a non spoiler fun way. Gonna rank these in order I want to reread them.
1. Green Creek the series by TJ Klune 🏳️🌈🐺🌶️🌲 Wolfsong Ravensong Heartsong Brothersong I am obsessed. Literally read all four books in 3 days. I have bought physical copies and marked them up. Will make you cry, laugh, and stay in your heart forever. Just……. Go read it. But the quick synopsis is Powerful Humans Wolves Witches have to pay for the sins of their fathers over and over again while maintaining their found family and finding their true soulmates. There is Ace Lesbian non binary rep in here as well.
2. The Warden by Daniel Ford🏳️🌈 👩❤️💋👩🧙♀️❄️🪦truly a fantasy masterpiece the romance isn’t the focus but it’s fucking good. First sapphic book to get a 10/10 for me. About a witch(with a magic system that is interesting surprising) growing up and finding herself a family without sacrificing who she is. I loved her and at first you think ehhh is this going to be boring no definitely not. Was surprising made me laugh and cry. Can’t wait for part 2 cause more of the hot gf in there I hope.
3. A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland🏳️🌈👑⚔️🌶️🌶️ I listened to this book two times in a row I enjoyed it so much. It’s a bodyguard and prince story. The prince’s depiction of depression anxiety panic attacks was so real. The bodyguard is very endearing. The themes of family are strong and interesting. The mystery was easy to solve but I found it rewarding because I wanted the prince to win so badly haha.
4. Spindle Splintered by Alix E Harrow🏳️🌈👩❤️💋👩👸🏼🥀😢
Short story about a dying girl who has a special interest in sleeping beauty. It does have a…. Debatably Sad ending. I did enjoy it for what it was trying to talk about. I lost a friend when she was too young. I’m glad I read it.
5. Scumbag Villains Self-Saving System series by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu 🏳️🌈🚩⚔️😈🕊️🤓🌶️? I’m putting it up this high because besides that scene in chapter 21 that slapped me in the brain I really enjoyed the series. Only Danmei I HAD TO GET THE REST OF THE SERIES IMMEDIATELY Hell I’ve even now written fan fic for the side ship. About a Nerd being put into his favorite love to hate stallion novel (story about a hero who fucks his way to success) but he’s in there as the abusive villain who the hero is destined to kill. The nerd has to save himself and unintentionally builds himself a harem featuring the most red flag the hero who so sololy motivated by the nerd. It’s great easy to read very fun. But 🌶️ scene in book 3 is a definite skip and delete from memory.
6. Case File Compendium Vol 1 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou 🏳️🌈? 😈🚩🩸🕵️🥼
I did just finish reading this so maybe I’m bias but I really did find it a book I couldn’t put down. I even brought it with me to work to read a chapter during my lunch breaks. Main characters are heavy in their homophobic lifestyles but they kiss and protect each other? True crime and mentally ill characters. MC is has a fatal mental illness that makes him unstable and MIL was his former private doctor. MC is trying to date MIL’s little sister. While getting up to shenanigans they stumble into a corrupt hospital and evil forces are maybe after them?! Idk its exciting fun to read but only if you like 🚩’s
7. The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish Vol 1 by Xue Shan Fei Hu 🏳️🌈🐟👑🎨🖼️ I did genuinely laugh my ass off during reading this book. It was incredibly easy to read I think I finished it in 4 hours. Very cute. I love the inside and outside art. About a nonverbal Prince who has anger issues and his crush on the modern man who is trapped within an ugly little fish. Now yes the Prince is becomes actively in love with the fish. Lucky for us we are stuck in the man who is trapped as the fish’s pov and he is genuinely just trying to get back to his world by obeying the powers that be System’s prompts to go home. Fish is not trying to seduce the Prince or anything. It’s just funny I had a great time with vol 1 probably will read vol 2.
8. So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole 🏳️🌈👩❤️💋👩👩❤️💋👨🐉🏝️ while having dragons and diverse cast it ultimately falls short of expectations wishing for more depth and clarity. The asexual spectrum representation feels muddled and Jamaican inspired cultural elements are unexplored which is at odds with its rich backdrop that could have enhanced the story. The story’s mystery element lacked cohesion resulting in a frustrating bittersweet ending that suggests a sequel and left me unsatisfied. I won’t read the next book. Won’t suggest it.
9. Faithless Book2 by C L Clark 🏳️🌈🚩👩❤️💋👩⚔️👑😩 a big let down from book 1 but I’m locked in for life I guess. Luca is back in France navigating a way to get the crown. While Touraine shows up with a priest and Teen to some how get food for her people. Most of the plot feels useless both MC characters are stupid and do no growing. The new teen character was interesting. I disliked the poly romance I didn’t particularly feel comfortable about Touraine and Luca why not add another person in what could go wrong? Luca’s reign as Queen looks to be very bad and you will feel extremely disappointed at the end. I’m going to read the next book but only because I like the characters who didn’t go to France.
10. Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore.
I read 90% of this book and I regret it. It’s a trans characters as the leads gay retelling of the great gatsby. I was truly excited to read it I’ve read The Great Gatsby many times. However this book just laughs at the source material. I’m tempted to say maybe the Chat GPT’d the plot and didn’t ask for any over arching themes in the book. I couldn’t do it I’m gonna have to find a better trans representation book in my next set of ten.
DNF’s
Last Night at the Telegraph Club, The Once and Future witches, Gearbreakers, the emperor and the endless palace.

We know the basics. The limitation of magic is that it will always come with a price. But I have this very interesting idea that with each unique magic user with a unique type of magic, it should have its own unique kind of price to pay. What would be an interesting kind of consequence that would fit well with her backward magic?
In canon it’s sorta hinted at that the price of her magic is the loss of her father/parents and then one other time jokingly implied that her bad luck in love is the price lol. Because in DC it seems to be more abstract prices, like i know with John it’s a big implication that everyone close to him gets hurt in some way.
imo this is fine, it’s not terribly creative but it’s a weird nebulous price that doesn’t really hinder her much. But i think there’s maybe different avenues we could explore?
My thought is that each magic user has a limit, a natural magical supply they can draw from to channel spells. And when you reach a spell that is more than what you possess naturally that’s when you have to start drawing power from different sources and “paying” for that magic. Kinda like a loan. That magic is the one with the weird costs, whereas depleting your normal supply just leaves you drained and needing rest. My HC is that Zatanna has a very unnaturally high limit, it’s one of the reasons she’s so “powerful” because the limit for her is far above everyone else, like John and why he’s labeled more an occultist.
you can draw power from beings like fae, gods and demons because they offer a convenient trade off as the cost. A little favor, worship, a sacrifice of some sort. Pretty straight forward bartering you give me this i lend you power. Magical objects are reserved for one type of spell/magic, the trade off being in needs to charge or it’s limited to the object, or you need to bond with the object, etc.
Then there’s magical dimensions you can draw energy from, and that cost can vary depending on the dimension, like maybe your sanity for a day, a week of nightmares, bit of bad luck, etc. Using John as an example again being who often does rituals or uses objects to sort’ve bypass the nastier costs/sources of magic so that he doesn’t deplete his natural reserve given by his demon blood, and so he doesn’t have to make any more deals than he already has.
Personally i don’t much care for the idea that the price of magic always had to be some depressing awful thing, i think that it should just be explicitly more transactional. And Zatanna is privileged because she inherited a lot of natural magic from her parents and being part homo magi and having a powerful medulla jewel in her brain. This also just plays into the notion that she’s a bit of a nepo baby and can inform how she interacts with the magical community since she has a “magic privilege”. I think that would be very fun to explore since she’s really well liked and trusted and seen as a great hero, but maybe there’s some resentment to how good she’s got it. Which has sorta been echoed in the past by John and Nimue Ravensong who had to work a lot harder to get good at magic and learn its secrets. Could definitely inform her more villainous rivals and how they might envy her like Allura or Tannarak. Even brother night who had to sacrifice all those kids for his power only for Zee to force him to recant it.
But if you have ideas for more specific costs id love to hear em. And thanks for the ask!

It is one-thirty in the morning, just a normal sort of September night. There's a cat stretched asleep on my bed, a raccoon being annoying outside my window. A clock chimed for the half-hour. I have finished Brothersong.
There's a kind of voice I like to use when I'm writing about these books. I tend to exaggerate my feelings a bit, joke about some of the weirder moments. There's a running vocabulary of stupid in-jokes throughout my posts; things I find amusing that I hope illicit at least an eye roll or a smirk.
I do not think I can maintain that level of self-amusement, right now. I don't want to, not for this one.
I am not exaggerating, playing it up or anything, when I say that I simply could not stop crying throughout the end. Ox's death, Joe's sacrifice, Thomas Bennett at the clearing. This was not fun, this was not pleasant, this was honestly very difficult for me to read.
Let's do a bit of basic addition: Wolfsong (498); Ravensong (496); Heartsong (468); Brothersong (468). One thousand nine-hundred and thirty pages total.
That's one thousand nine hundred thirty pages of love, heartbreak, beauty and death. I nearly dropped the first book halfway through because I was going through a break-up and Joe's decision to leave Ox behind in pursuit of the beast who murdered his father felt like too much at the time. I'm very glad I didn't, but I don't exactly feel glad in the sense that I'm particularly happy right now.
A few days ago, I mentioned how much I was stalling this book, because I knew I wasn't really ready to finish it. There's not exactly more to fall back on, you know?
Not another book, a new villain, a new perspective, or mystery, or awkward gay love to uncover. Just, an ending.
Hell, just finding the right way to talk about how I'm feeling right now, about the book in question, Brothersong, the book I just finished, isn't exactly going well for me.
I've said quite a bit about the late Thomas Bennett. I have been mildly curious about his letter to Joe's future mate, but doubted it would really make an appearance, since, there being no other book, there's no reason to have a viewpoint character read it that isn't Ox. I was wrong.
Ox is. He just is.
Gavin is, as I've said before, the type of man I would fall hopelessly for. Carter has his work cut out for him, but it's a wonderful future nonetheless.
Joe's no longer the Alpha of All, and I'm glad to see this. I'm happy for him. So much could have been avoided if this responsibility had not been given to him.
I'm glad there's exactly no clarity whatsoever on the Chris and Tanner situation. Whatever they've got works for them, and who am I to judge?
Gordo is free of the last of his demons. I hope Mark gets to smile more.
Kelly and Robbie will forever be the definition of "illegally cute couple". Sickening, really, but in a good way.
I just... what's next?
I love these idiots, and I'm glad most of them have a happy ending.
I'm going to leave this here, for personal reasons:
And, this, because it is very true to how these books are sitting with me now:
I think I'm turning in for the night. I've got work in the morning. I'll find another book to read, something that won't depress me as much.
As always, I am lying.

the song i always listen to while reading The Green Creek series is on but i can’t read and it’s absolute torture! well, i technically could, but i’m not in a suitable location to read which makes it all worse….aughhh!
welp
anyhow, reading Ravensong rn. i’m like 100 pages in. i’m in so much pain because of that book and i’m not even too far in
also, the song is You Will Be Okay covered by Caleb Hyles. it fits the books pretty well! (at least where i am in them) and is just a good song in general.
in so much hurt

The fast paced back and forth of ravensong when Gordo Joe Carter and Kelly start to head back to Green Creek,
Getting short snippets of Gordo being left alone as a teenager and then our present versions of the guys feeling everything as they head home,
All building to the scene where Gordo gives his wolf back to Mark,
And they meet face to face with a pack they don’t know.
It hurts so fucking good.

I need to yell about Heartsong, so beware: spoilers after the break!
So I was kinda dumb, because the epilogue of Ravensong kind of gave it away. But because Heartsong started with baby Robbie, I just assumed it picked up the story before Robbie came to the Bennets. Anyway, I did know who Ezra was, but I didn't link the dreams to actual memories and was wondering if Robbie had some sort of visions or whatever. I feel a little dumb now. Also ARE TANNER AND CHRIS WOLVES NOW WHAT THE HECK and were is the rest of Team Human?? (I'm just at the confrontation at the bridge, so I'm sure I'll find out soon enough) but !!!!!
Also still a little unsure about the timeline, how long has Robbie been gone - was it like 6 months or so? UGH. This is such a good plot building series!

fuck it, ravensong rant
More like Thomas Benett hate but same thing
😭 I can't stop thinking about ravensong. And not in a good way. The more I thought the more stuff I didn't like about the book. Fuck me. Don't take this to heart, Gordo...
Ravensong: Gordo's Emotional Torture Pack
This is so messed up in a lot of ways. I fucking hate Thomas. I don't usually swear often I swear...
Gordo's father pushed the knowledge of magic upon an 8-years old kid arm by drilling tattoos all over his body. And who held it down while the kid is tattooed? His father, his pack's Alpha, and... I'm fuming... FUCKINGSHITASS THOMAS. I'll get to you later Thomas you prick. THIS IS CHILD ABUSE!!
His mother is telling her the truth when she said wolves lies, wolves would used him. In both instance during his time of Abel's and shitass Thomas' pack.
His dad cheated. He knows about it and he saw it.
He saw his mothers memories being manipulated, literally by magic.
Having to be a complicit in believing the crazy disease of his mother.
His mother turned to be a murderer because of, yes, his father is a power-crazed cheating scumbag who doesn't care for her or his son or the family.
His grandfather taught him fixing cars, and then somehow dies before they could hey awah from town.
Being put into the responsibility of the packs witch at the age of 12 just after he's turned into orphan. This is violating child labor laws... Fucking Abel I hope you rot in pieces.
Choices, choices, choices, all the choices that pushed into him. Once again wolves are liar about choices.
Abandoned by his pack. FUCKINGSHITASS THOMAS decided that he should leave the pack. Because others didn't trust humans. BUT DO YOU, THOMAS? DO YOU TRUST HIM? All of this without talking to Gordo first. Fuck him.
Being put into a /mate/ position and then ghosted for months. Having told to wait for YEARS! Barely contacted by the bennets and even more so Mark because what? And even after he said he regret it, I still can get around why can't he text? Send letters? Say hi? Fucking send pigeons??? Liars, Mark. Whether he intend it or not he still broke his promises to Gordo.
His father figure Marty died and. Fucking bennets don't even answer calls. HE IS GRIEVING AND WHERE IS HIS PACK? WHERE IS THE HOWLING SONG OF SORROW? FUCK YOU ALL. Rico Tanner Chris my loves...
The time the Bennets returned, they didn't even. APOLOGISE. NOT ELIZABETH. NOT MARK. AND OF COURSE NOT THOMAS. FUCKING COWARDS.
Having his tether being taken away by who? FUCKING BENNETS AGAIN. Thus basically dragging him into their whole business. THE AUDACITY TO ASK FOR GORDO'S HELP WHEN THEY. LEFT HIM. UGSHSHS
Thomas first contact with Gordo after leaving was to. Fucking threaten Gordo for a help. SLIME. SLIME. I don't care that he begged for it. He can't even. Fucking apologize.
Kept being pushed to "make talks" with Mark despite Gordo being the one wronged here. Everyone is complicit. Fucking Team Humans. Joe and Ox. Carter and Kelly. FUCKING ELIZABETH. Y'all have no rights.
Fucking Mark stalling his apologies and even when he touched a bit on why they left, it was when he's turned gonna be turned into omega💀 he's better tho because THOMAS?? Saying sorry after death over dreams like what was that
RELIVING HIS PAST AGAIN and seeing it unfold once again. fuck. tj klune....
HE HAVE TO LOST HIS ARM?? AND COPE WITH IT?? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU TJ KLUNE
Ugh... UGH... I'M SO... I MISSED A LOT. I KNOW. UGH... I HATE IT HERE. I HATE THOMAS BENNETT. this book is just. Torture. For gordo. Am I babying gordo too much. Yes, and what about it???? THE BENNETS GOT AWAY WITH BEING EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATIVE AND I. I HATE IT HERE. UGHH.....
Ok I think I'm good now. Writing this was liberating.
LOVE SONG IS ABOUT ELIZABETH AND...
...
...
FUCKING SHITASS THOMAS? DO I SKIP
Are they gonna. Are they gonna redeem Thomas because I will SKIP.
then again Elizabeth... She's like... The queen. And also the mom to joe. And Carter and Kelly... I will read it for you queen...

Sorry I have been so damn quiet here. I have my big disability hearing pt 2 next week and am super anxious about it. So I have just been kind of keeping my head down and diving into books and movies to distract.
I started talking to my brother again, which had been… weird. And not good weird. Idk. He is clearly struggling. But he is also pretending he is not and still sticking with the mess he has made so idk how to help him or if I should even try.
Anyway, just finished Wolfsong by TJ Klune and about to start Ravensong. Also rereading The Locked Tomb via audiobook while I embroider. And I joined a group on the Southern Reach subreddit to reread that series before the 4th one comes out in Oct.
Anyway, I am doing okay. Really grateful for friends and my remaining family right now. They keep me going.
