Fireflies rose around us, pulsing slowly. At first there were only two or three, but then more began to hang heavy in the air. They were yellow-green, and I wondered how this could be real. Here. Now. This moment. How I ever could have forgotten this.

ACE KELLY, ACE KELLY, ACE KELLY.
This genuinely made me so happy. I had hopes when I read the first book but I've been burned by the "late bloomer/haven't found the right person" trope before, so I didn't want to get them too high up.
He's one of my fave characters too, and he's written so well here. Genuine joy. What a gift for pride month.

Ok, Ravensong and Heartsong spoilers but Jesus, just.
.
Fuck Robert Livingstone. He drove his wife insane and blamed everyone else for the mess it caused. Like Thomas made so many bad calls but he was always invested in cultivating the potential of those he loved. Robert just used people to build his own ego. He screwed with Catherine's head and she poisoned Gordo against the wolves. THEN he decides he's "grown fond" of Robbie, but is doing the exact same shit. What a sociopathic piece of shit .

Gordo has lived this before. He knows what to do. He's fine. It's an easy, familiar lie.

If I had a nickel for everytime I read a book series where 'The Joys of Gay Sex' had a not insignificant impact on the progress of the story, and that series goes on to be the most emotionally impactful and life changing series I've ever read......I would have two nickels...
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Fuck it we ball. “The Heartsong” Athmoth screenshots + drawings I've made including them so far. One of the few (FEW) gripes I have with the character customization is you can't flip the hair. So I pulled a “fine, I'll do it myself” in all my drawings of them lmao
[More spoiler-y screenshots n drawings below the cut]

Half-illithid shenanigans go kind of insane. Especially with, uh. Certain possibilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I call this the “walking around with attractive people who have pale hair” saga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[PROLONGED EYE CONTACT (PROLONGED EYE CONTACT)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emperor shenanigans. Love the colour palette of all its cutscenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For backstory reasons, Athmoth feels an almost irresistible urge to play on any piano they come across.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[walks into Cazador's palace] “Oh. This is a gilded cage of a place.” [Plays the Power to ignite the feeling of hope born in a place of horror] (Seriously one of my favourite moments of this play through)
I've reached the image limit, haha. But I thought this might be a fun post to put together, just to give some insight on one of my Tavs for this game.
In case it wasn't obvious, Athmoth here is paired with Astarion. I've considered calling the pairing starsong. My more joking ship name for them is “Double A Battery” hahaha-
Anyway. [disappears into the ether]

Aight so now that I have finished Brothersong I have THOUGHTS on further logistical breakdowns of how Green Creek could be adapted to a GLAAD Award-Winning HBO TV show. Spoilers so here is a cut for anyone who wants to be fresh to the series.
PRE-PRODUCTION
OKAY SO! The filming block for Season 1/Wolfsong would MOST LIKELY be the biggest, especially for scenes involving younger versions of the actors. As these are spread out across, like, all four books, some are just “scene we’ve seen but from a different perspective or with ‘Dream Seauence VFX’ so we just need more blocking/extra takes to make it all seem believeable using B-roll” to “yeah this requires Young Thomas and various child actors so we’re filming this beforehand so that everyone looks the same when these scenes come up later” to “ah hell we gotta shave their heads anyways might as well film the revenge road trip.” Thus, basically everyone but, like, Dominique would have to be cast by Season 1, and probably all of Season 1 and half of season 2 would need to be written and finalized and drafts/outlines of Season 3 and 4 would need to be made before casting would begin. Writer’s room would include TJ and a racially-diverse LGBT staff.
Caswell wouldn’t need to be fully built but enough of a location would be needed to film individual scenes with the younger actors and scenes set in the big house at Caswell (ie arguments between Mark and Thomas, Joe being taken, Thomas in the woods with the kids, Thomas writing the letters)
Title sequence would be based on the lovely new covers for the hardcover editions from Tor. They’d get longer with each season and by the end we see the whole pack in the papercraft style of the covers.
CASTING
Yeah we’d need a big ass cast. With multiple actors to play different characters at different ages.
Babies:
Carter, Kelly, Joe, maybe also Gavin depending on things
Children:
Gordo, Gavin, Mark, Rico, Chris, Tanner, Carter, Kelly, Joe, Robbie
Young Adult (ie Teen to Mid 20s) and Adult (ie by the Rough Present of when Ox first discoveres the secret of the Bennetts)
Basically everyone else
The tricky part will be that, yeah, there will probably need to be different actors for 20s Thomas, Elizabeth, Mark, and Gordo because while a 20-something can play 16 or so, its harder for 30-40 year olds to play 20-something. The upside being that an older actor CAN play Gordo for the scenes after Ox’s dad leaves (also Ox’s dad will need a name lol). You would need to switch to older actors for the Bennett kids and Ox basically once Ox graduates high school. But then you can keep all the same actors for the rest of the “present” set scenes. Osmond, and Robert Livingstone would also need younger actors. Richard Collins would only need one actor he’s barely in the flashbacks as it is.
STRUCTURE/PLOT RAMBLINGS
There are a few things that would need to be done in order to improve the pacing for TV, imo. Mainly, that the handing off of Alpha of All to the Fairbanks pack needs to feel more earned and less semi-random. Like, show them taking in Omegas at the end of Season 2, have them be allies at Caswell in Season 3 and the final battle in Season 4. Flesh them out a bit more. Also some continuity smoothing would be needed (ie clarifying that Gordo refused Mark’s MATE bite not Thomas’s BECOME WOLF bite).
Some more forshadowing of Robert’s failsafe in Season 2 would help. Obviously SHOW Gavin’s timber wolf in the attack on Jessie (and ideally have the actor be the body actor wearing the CGI ball suit moving all wolf-like in the scene) in Season 1.
I’d personally add in more of a wrap-up in Caswell at the end of Season 4. And also an extended aftermath scene or episode after Ox’s resurrection. Joe’s wolf is still bigger than almost everyone else, but not as big as it was when he was Alpha. One thing that I’d ask to be added is, maybe with the death of Robert and the ressurrection of Ox there’s a big ass magic pulse and we get a follow-up with the new Alpha of All from Alaska training Betas who have become Alphas thanks to Mystical Moon Magic as they rebuild packs across the continent. Idk the story needs more of a denumont. Alpha of All making more of an effort to try and bring Omegas back from the brink before just automatically deciding to kill them.
Dominique could have human bite marks on her to show thar Jessie tried to “Mate Bite” too even as a human. Bambi and Rico too.
He/They Gavin? Maybe? Gavin feels very he/they. Also Elizabeth showing affection to Maggie (hey if we’re gonna imply that Thomas and Richard had a kind of romantic love for each other in Brothersong before he went Omega Lizzie can make side-eye at Maggie).
Show more of the three year gap between Ravensong and Heartsong (not a lot but more than just one bit when Robbie is kidnapped). And the new story in the deluxe hardcover books too. The myth or whatever. That can be animated in a sketchy style (think Princess Kaguya or Wolfwalkers) with VO from Elizabeth.
Anyway rambling over I love these books so much. TJ I woudn’t say no to a LIGHT DRAMA/mostly fluff 5th book or short story. Maybe from Chris or Tanner’s perspective? Or Jessie’s?

So what if the covers of the green creek series mean something. Obviously they do but the colors they resemble the mood of the book.
Just saying there are spoilers.
Tumblr media
Wolfsongs cover is green and blue. Sadness and Relive. Sadness because of Joes trauma and Thomas death and their disappearance FOR THREE WHOLE YEARS. Relive when they return and Ox survives and everything.
And we have one wolf, MAYBEE joes stone wolf, it resembles Joe i guess coz for most of the book Ox is human and only get turned in the end and doesn’t have a stone wolf or is a wolf at all.
Tumblr media
The cover of Ravensong is Red, mostly.
Red stand for anger. Gordos anger towards The Bennetts and Mark and Basically everyone. Brown wolf is, who would have guessed, Mark. Geordo is a witch obviously and doesn’t have a stone Wolfe
Tumblr media
Heartsongs cover is green. Relive, that Robbie is back and in the end that he gets his memories back and That Kelly turn into a wolf again. Two wolfs coz of Kelly and Robbie, two stonewolfs, two shifters. Self explaining.
Tumblr media
Brothersong. Purple and blue-ish. Omega purple as a reference to Carter being an Omega in Ravensong and Heartsong ? And pretty sure one to Gavin, coz of him being close to being feral and so long in his wolf form. Two Wolfs on the cover. Carter and Gavin, Two stone wolfs ? Cant say much to the blue-ish imma be honest. Of course Gavin’s leave in the end of Heartsong and therir reunion probably isn’t without sadness. I WILL READ IT.
I Have no clue if this makes any sense at all. But for me it does Lmao.

I need to yell about Heartsong, so beware: spoilers after the break!
So I was kinda dumb, because the epilogue of Ravensong kind of gave it away. But because Heartsong started with baby Robbie, I just assumed it picked up the story before Robbie came to the Bennets. Anyway, I did know who Ezra was, but I didn't link the dreams to actual memories and was wondering if Robbie had some sort of visions or whatever. I feel a little dumb now. Also ARE TANNER AND CHRIS WOLVES NOW WHAT THE HECK and were is the rest of Team Human?? (I'm just at the confrontation at the bridge, so I'm sure I'll find out soon enough) but !!!!!
Also still a little unsure about the timeline, how long has Robbie been gone - was it like 6 months or so? UGH. This is such a good plot building series!

Book List Time!!!
And with that I have 10 give or take books to discuss. Now I’m up to over 30 books since May woooo telling tumblr about each one has been a great motivator so I hope my reviews and list help people out in a non spoiler fun way. Gonna rank these in order I want to reread them.
1. Green Creek the series by TJ Klune 🏳️‍🌈🐺🌶️🌲 Wolfsong Ravensong Heartsong Brothersong I am obsessed. Literally read all four books in 3 days. I have bought physical copies and marked them up. Will make you cry, laugh, and stay in your heart forever. Just……. Go read it. But the quick synopsis is Powerful Humans Wolves Witches have to pay for the sins of their fathers over and over again while maintaining their found family and finding their true soulmates. There is Ace Lesbian non binary rep in here as well.
2. The Warden by Daniel Ford🏳️‍🌈 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩🧙‍♀️❄️🪦truly a fantasy masterpiece the romance isn’t the focus but it’s fucking good. First sapphic book to get a 10/10 for me. About a witch(with a magic system that is interesting surprising) growing up and finding herself a family without sacrificing who she is. I loved her and at first you think ehhh is this going to be boring no definitely not. Was surprising made me laugh and cry. Can’t wait for part 2 cause more of the hot gf in there I hope.
3. A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland🏳️‍🌈👑⚔️🌶️🌶️ I listened to this book two times in a row I enjoyed it so much. It’s a bodyguard and prince story. The prince’s depiction of depression anxiety panic attacks was so real. The bodyguard is very endearing. The themes of family are strong and interesting. The mystery was easy to solve but I found it rewarding because I wanted the prince to win so badly haha.
4. Spindle Splintered by Alix E Harrow🏳️‍🌈👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩👸🏼🥀😢
Short story about a dying girl who has a special interest in sleeping beauty. It does have a…. Debatably Sad ending. I did enjoy it for what it was trying to talk about. I lost a friend when she was too young. I’m glad I read it.
5. Scumbag Villains Self-Saving System series by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu 🏳️‍🌈🚩⚔️😈🕊️🤓🌶️? I’m putting it up this high because besides that scene in chapter 21 that slapped me in the brain I really enjoyed the series. Only Danmei I HAD TO GET THE REST OF THE SERIES IMMEDIATELY Hell I’ve even now written fan fic for the side ship. About a Nerd being put into his favorite love to hate stallion novel (story about a hero who fucks his way to success) but he’s in there as the abusive villain who the hero is destined to kill. The nerd has to save himself and unintentionally builds himself a harem featuring the most red flag the hero who so sololy motivated by the nerd. It’s great easy to read very fun. But 🌶️ scene in book 3 is a definite skip and delete from memory.
6. Case File Compendium Vol 1 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou 🏳️‍🌈? 😈🚩🩸🕵️🥼
I did just finish reading this so maybe I’m bias but I really did find it a book I couldn’t put down. I even brought it with me to work to read a chapter during my lunch breaks. Main characters are heavy in their homophobic lifestyles but they kiss and protect each other? True crime and mentally ill characters. MC is has a fatal mental illness that makes him unstable and MIL was his former private doctor. MC is trying to date MIL’s little sister. While getting up to shenanigans they stumble into a corrupt hospital and evil forces are maybe after them?! Idk its exciting fun to read but only if you like 🚩’s
7. The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish Vol 1 by Xue Shan Fei Hu 🏳️‍🌈🐟👑🎨🖼️ I did genuinely laugh my ass off during reading this book. It was incredibly easy to read I think I finished it in 4 hours. Very cute. I love the inside and outside art. About a nonverbal Prince who has anger issues and his crush on the modern man who is trapped within an ugly little fish. Now yes the Prince is becomes actively in love with the fish. Lucky for us we are stuck in the man who is trapped as the fish’s pov and he is genuinely just trying to get back to his world by obeying the powers that be System’s prompts to go home. Fish is not trying to seduce the Prince or anything. It’s just funny I had a great time with vol 1 probably will read vol 2.
8. So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole 🏳️‍🌈👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨🐉🏝️ while having dragons and diverse cast it ultimately falls short of expectations wishing for more depth and clarity. The asexual spectrum representation feels muddled and Jamaican inspired cultural elements are unexplored which is at odds with its rich backdrop that could have enhanced the story. The story’s mystery element lacked cohesion resulting in a frustrating bittersweet ending that suggests a sequel and left me unsatisfied. I won’t read the next book. Won’t suggest it.
9. Faithless Book2 by C L Clark 🏳️‍🌈🚩👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩⚔️👑😩 a big let down from book 1 but I’m locked in for life I guess. Luca is back in France navigating a way to get the crown. While Touraine shows up with a priest and Teen to some how get food for her people. Most of the plot feels useless both MC characters are stupid and do no growing. The new teen character was interesting. I disliked the poly romance I didn’t particularly feel comfortable about Touraine and Luca why not add another person in what could go wrong? Luca’s reign as Queen looks to be very bad and you will feel extremely disappointed at the end. I’m going to read the next book but only because I like the characters who didn’t go to France.
10. Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore.
I read 90% of this book and I regret it. It’s a trans characters as the leads gay retelling of the great gatsby. I was truly excited to read it I’ve read The Great Gatsby many times. However this book just laughs at the source material. I’m tempted to say maybe the Chat GPT’d the plot and didn’t ask for any over arching themes in the book. I couldn’t do it I’m gonna have to find a better trans representation book in my next set of ten.
DNF’s
Last Night at the Telegraph Club, The Once and Future witches, Gearbreakers, the emperor and the endless palace.

Gordo walks the territory. The wards are holding. The magic is strong. Everything hurts. Everything is fine. Something is wrong. Something is wrong. Something is wrong.
“Fuck,” he says to the woods. And then louder, “Fuck.” A third time, to that damn white wolf in his head who is whispering, little bird, little bird, little bird, “FUCK.”

ARO/ACE MEDIA REC
So, I decided to make one of this too with the books and movies/series I've actually seen to keep track of my impressions.
Btw these are just little descriptions to avoid spoilers, but before reading or watching, please, do seek more information about the plot and the eventual warnings that come with it!
BOOKS
Seven Ways We Lie - ace rep
The story follows 7 students who represent the 7 deadly sin. They all get caught up in a secret at their high school while having to deal with their messy lives.
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman - ace rep
It talks about friendship and relationships and the difficulties that come with loneliness.
Solitaire by Alice Oseman - ace rep
It follows the story of Tori and her struggles with loneliness and making friends until Michael comes along.
How to be a normal person by TJ Klune - ace rep
One of the most moving father-son relationships I've ever read. This book is a bit weird, but really lovely.
Heartsong by TJ Klune - ace rep
It's about werewolves and magicians and found family. The relationship that the ace characters is in is really cute.
The Captive Prince series by CS Pacat - demi rep (?)
I was on the fence on wether to include this or not, but ultimately I did because. It's historical fantasy and it deals with abuse, so heads-up!
The all for the game series by Nora Sakavic - demisexual rep
The story of Neil Josten, an orphan on the run that turns to Exy to try to survive. It's about found family and it deals really well with the concept of consent.
COMICS
Wandering by pearsfears - aroace rep
This story is about sport, college, body issues and friendship. The artstyle is really soothing.
MOVIES/SERIES
Koisenu Futari - aroace rep
Arguably one of the best series on the topic I've ever seen. The characters talk about it out loud and with no shame and it explores the idea of a queer platonic relationship.
Heartbreak High - ace rep
It deals with the difficulties and incomprehensions that may come when one person in a relationship is asexual and/or sex repulsed and the other is not.
Heartstopper - aroace rep
Alice Oseman once again, this time with aroace rep from Isaac in the second season.
One Piece Live Action - ace/aroace rep
I never read the manga or saw the anime, but this one really surprised me. Luffy truly feels aroace with lines like "you look like Nami" (and Zoro's "you're asking the wrong guy"!) and loyalty that makes you think of the possibility of a qpr. Plus, found family! (Again, idk if it's confirmed. I know nothing about one piece, but the vibes are surely there).

Heartsong thoughts and spoilers.
Tumblr media
I read a post once that was shitting on Joe for being an asshole and being so quick to think Robbie betrayed them, and how they missed the little tornado.
Joe is an asshole.
They're all dicks, or have been at one point or another.
Every single one of them have made mistakes. And that's the point. Gordo, Mark, Joe, and even Ox. Kelly too. Carter is my golden child, but yes, even him. Elizabeth isn't exempt from this either. Klune had said that Wolfsong was originally intended to be a story about two boys growing up (and being gay yes we know) and I think a part of growing up is fucking up. Badly.
Thomas was the king of mistakes. Did he learn from them? Not in time for him to do anything about it, for it to matter. I know there's the letters, but they're cheap. A half hearted effort. Did he do better than Abel? Yes, but not enough.
But the rest of them learned from their mistakes, I like to think, and none of them are perfect.
Because people aren't perfect. People can be assholes, even the best people.
Nobody is the little tornado they used to be. You grow up, life happens, and in this particular case, you're traumatized by werewolf life. But do you break the cycle?
What do you do after you realize you fucked up?
Do you try your damnedest to be a better person (and still mess up sometimes) and learn from the past?
And by the way, Joe was one of the first people to defend Robbie. I hated his decisions in Wolfsong, so freaking much, but damn if that doesn't make his character development that much better. Every single one of those Bennets fucked up by not going after Robbie, after all that time they should've known better.
But like I said, people fuck up.

Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Rating: G Words: 1.7K~ Summary: heart•song (n.): An expression of our most inner being, identity, and reason for existence – what twists and turns of life have led us here, to this dangerous place? And by what strength do we keep enduring? - Or: For a sage to give one their vow, first there must be vulnerability. (A collection of shorts exploring the bond between each sage and Link.)
Some Tulin and Link bonding content for y'all today! I have a lil' one-shot planned for every single TotK sage.
NOTE: This fic contains TotK main quest spoilers.
Enjoy! <3
____
One: Tulin
The bitting air chill produced by the monumental cyclone they’re approaching is almost enough to send a shiver down his spine, downy feathers be damned.
Tulin tucks his wings in tight and scoots himself closer to the fire Link just lit, its delicate flames protected from the merciless touch of this wintery weather within a little alcove they spotted in the ruins midway up the Rising Island Chain. It’s not an impressive fire by any means— not like one of Gesane’s massive hillside beacons— but it’s more than enough to keep warm and cook a quick meal over.
Of course, resting and eating are the last two things he wants to focus on right now with the well-being of his whole village at stake.
He lets out a faint huff, his warm breath condensing into a foggy cloud that‘s rapidly whisked away by the wind. Restless talons rap against the sky platform’s aged stonework. Nothing about this quest has panned out as expected so far, and it’s super frustrating to him. First his prized bow got stolen by monsters— and that’s embarrassing enough on its own— but then he’s been lagging behind Link all the way up these freezing cold islands… struggling to recover his full stamina after continuous use of his wind burst powers. He just feels… so, so small— so guilty, as if… he’s somehow letting his whole village down if he allows himself to slow down and rest for even more than a minute.
“Do we really have to break now?” he halfheartedly protests, fighting to keep his beak from chattering between syllables. “We’re like, halfway there!”
“Your stomach’s rumbling,” is all Link signs in response, before reaching into his bag.
Tulin’s features scrunch into a grimace as he realizes the Hylian is clearly attempting to spare his feelings. After all, it’s not a coincidence that Link suggested setting up camp right after watching him lose air momentum and almost miss his landing on this latest chunk of island.
He may be foolish sometimes, may be in way, way over his head up here, but he’s far from ignorant.
Or at least, he’d really like to believe so.
After a minute or so of rummaging through various pockets and flaps, his traveling partner retrieves two metal skewers and a handful of peppers and cubed venison from his supplies. (Good grief, just how deep is that bag?) He’s swift and methodical in preparing them for the fire— piercing their sides one by one, alternating between meat and vegetable to provide a well balanced meal: protein, and something to keep their bodies warm at these near impossible heights.
(For, despite what many of his people would have the Hylians think, there is a limit to how far up a Rito can venture before even their feathers freeze over.)
But even if he’s anxious to continue their mission as soon as he possibly can, there’s no denying the fact that a skilled warrior dare not fight on an empty stomach. Swallowing the rest of his impatience, Tulin mouths a hollow ‘thanks’ as Link passes one of the finished skewers to him. Clutching it within his feathery grasp, he starts to rotate it over the flames. The two fall into a natural silence in the minutes that follow. It’s quite simple to let one’s mind wander whilst cooking, of course. The eye is so fixed on the outer rind of one’s food— waiting for the fire to provide that perfect, smoky singe— that the auditory senses are left free to explore whatever else they desire. Like the rhythmic crackling of embers from beneath the wood, or the wailing gusts intermittently slamming into the sides of the toppled Zonai ruins that form their alcove.
Swallowing, he traces the path of the wind towards the very edge of the sky island just a few talon lengths away… marvels at how far down the steep mountain peaks of Hebra are.
“Y’know,” he begins with hesitance, forcing himself to glance away from the daunting view of The Down Below, “I don’t think I’ve ever flown so high before.“
Long pause.
He glances back towards Link. His friend doesn’t move to respond at first, clutching his skewer with both hands, but he can tell he’s paying attention from the way he shifts his head, angling his ear so he can catch his voice over the air’s violent whistling.
“Sometimes,” he continues, “it felt like… I dunno. Like even though I wanted to prove myself to my dad, wanted to explore the furthest reaches of this sky… it just wasn’t the right time yet.”
“And is it the right time now?” Link asks, almost so quiet so as to be imperceptible. It’s actually a little jarring— he doesn’t hear the man speak out loud too often. He wonders why he’s chosen to do so today.
Although on second consideration, the answer may be simpler than meets the eye- it’s probably because his hands are occupied with the cooking.
Tulin clamps his beak shut, considering for a moment. “I— I don’t know. I hope it is. Everyone back at home could really use a turn in this weather.”
His dad, most of all. It wasn’t too long ago that Elder Kaneli relinquished the role and passed it on to him. Seeing the way this duty has washed out his feathers, he almost wishes it didn’t happen at all. Of course, no one could’ve predicted the Upheaval, or this dreadful blizzard. No one could’ve predicted the village would have to reckon with the very real threat of starvation. So having to watch Dad’s dauntless spirit nearly crumple under the pressure all the responsibilities of leadership bring… it pains him. It’s why he’s been so fervent in pushing back against his non-engagement policy this whole time— because the Dad he knows wouldn’t just sit back and accept bare minimum survival when his people are suffering.
His thoughts are interrupted by a faint rumble at his side, likely Link clearing his throat. With a hum of intrigue, he turns to meet his gaze.
“Your skewer’s smoldering,” he says, nodding towards the campfire.
Sharp inhale.
Oh! Oh, yeah—
Thanking his lucky stars that someone was paying attention, Tulin yanks his meal from the flames. He summons a focused gust of wind upon his wing, blowing it across the skewer’s tip to make sure it’s not too burning hot when he bites into it. Well, at least it’s done. A bit overdone, but food is food. He certainly can’t complain after a few weeks of rationing back home. Stomach rumbling with ferocity once again, he digs in. The roasted spicy pepper warms him instantly.
From the corner of his eye, he catches a glimpse of a faint smile curving across the Hylian’s face.
“What?” he asks, the word garbled within a beak-full of meat.
Link removes his own skewer from the flames, and gestures towards him with the end of the metal stake. “Your ability,” he begins, voice a little hoarse with disuse. “Manipulation of air. How’d you become so skilled at creating such precise gusts?”
A slight laugh escapes his lungs, his body suddenly brimming with nervous energy. “I’m not sure, actually… I was really young when it started, and my memory’s kinda shaky… plus, most people don’t believe me, anyways.”
His friend scoots across the stone so he’s sitting a bit closer, and takes a hefty bite of his own dinner.
“Try me,” he says mid-chew.
Tulin inhales deeply. Oh boy, what’s the easiest way to explain this…?
“Well,” he begins, a cold burst of anxiety rushing through his veins, “it was when I was still a fledgling… still learning how to fly. I was playing with Molli and Kotts in the woods outside the village, and then… suddenly I was alone. Someplace completely different, as if I’d been spirited away.”
He pauses his story for a few seconds to take another bite of his meat and pepper skewer.
“I was in this huge, gigantic forest… even larger than the one I came from! I thought I was lost forever— that is, until this other Rito found me, and led me back to my dad. Like Dad, this Rito was also a warrior— but he had a special power, one he developed all by himself. He could push himself high up into the sky with one, mighty gust.”
Link’s brows raise in noted interest at that last statement.
“I wasn’t with him for long, but—“ Tulin lets his eyes flutter shut, thinking back to those clouded memories with deep fondness— “that day, I promised myself I’d train until I became just as powerful a warrior as him. Someone my people could really be proud of. But then again…” Opening his eyes, he turns towards his companion and gives a big ol’ shrug. “I still don’t understand how any of that could be real. That warrior… my memory’s a little fuzzy, but he looked a lot like how people describe Master Revali, from the age of Calamity. His powers, too… it’s all so strange.”
“How do you think it happened?” Link asks, his expression brimming with curiosity.
“Hmm…” he muses, curling his wing against his chin. “I dunno. For a while, I started to think that… maybe it was a dream. Maybe all my friends were right. But then again… if I’m hearing some mysterious voice calling to me from this storm… then who knows what’s possible? Maybe there’s more to all this than meets the eye, y’know?”
And maybe… just maybe… whatever’s hiding at the core of the maelstrom will finally feed him the answers he’s craved his whole life… finally feed him new purpose.
The Hylian hums, giving a short nod. “I’ve long accepted there’s things in this world I’ll never fully understand. And for what it’s worth… I believe your story.”
After a whole childhood of deniers, the sheer validation laced within those words are enough to almost bring him to tears.
“Thank you,” he says, his heart brimming with gratitude.
And though this is but a singular moment of validation after a whole childhood of being told he’s got ‘an overactive imagination,’ the pull of the world below suddenly feels a little lighter. Light enough to push through his exhaustion and scale the rest of this rising island chain, at very least! After all… it can’t be that much further to the top. And once they’re there… this whole mystery with the storm, and all the Zelda sightings, and the strange voice he keeps hearing is gonna slot right into place.
He just knows it.
