Okay guys. 'They', 'them' and 'theirs' when used in the singular are gender neutral pronouns.

They are not gender specific to nonbinary people.

Arguing the use of a pronoun set that applies to literally all human beings (and a bunch of other stuff) must mean that Dante is nonbinary isn't just stupid, it's ignoring the themes of their character.

Dante is purposefully mysterious. We don't know anything about them, really. Most of the characters don't know anything about them. They know nothing about themself.

We, like most of the sinners, don't know Dante's real name, age or origin. We can't see their skin. We can't really tell what their figure looks like in that outfit and the way the others are drawn would make that largely inconclusive anyway.

Dante doesn't even have their own face anymore.

They are a fiction even within the narrative. One created by the company that they are currently being exploited by.

To argue that the identity that has been forced upon them by an exploitative corporation in a dystopian hellscape is a representation of their authentic self is either hopelessly naïve or entirely selfish.

To apply a nonbinary gender identity to them is to reduce them to what others have forced upon them.

Which is wild, if you think about it. Because the people he/himming Dante are doing so entirely because they are modelled after an actual human man who is buried in Ravenna. You can go see his grave. They are using meta information to come to a conclusion that might be wrong, and they know it might be wrong. Gender bent characters are not uncommon in this game.

But the people aggressively enbying them (and complaining about the he/himmers) are purposefully ignoring the open themes of depersonalisation in this character to... something something representation? IDK, because it makes them look like they have either no media literacy at all, or they just don't care about themes, narrative or the goddamn plot.

TL:DR

The other characters aren't calling Dante they and them because Dante is nonbinary, they're calling Dante they and them because they don't have the first idea what Dante is and have the decency not to assign an identity to Dante that might not be true. (Or they're invested in keeping that information from Dante.)

Dante could be nonbinary! But they could also be a man, or a woman, or not a person at all. The fact that we do not know is important to this story and dismissing it for the sake of 'representation' is both selfish and disrespectful to Project Moon.

This is their story, not your playground.

Your headcanons aren't justification for bashing the people who don't share them or Project Moon if it turns out that Dante is just a guy.

Edit: The possibility of Dante being nonbinary is slim at best and would absolutely undermine the theme of depersonalisation here. The depersonalisation of being stripped of your gender identity does not hit the same if you already insist that others use the gender unknown pronouns for you.

I only acknowledged it in the context that it's another possibility that the sinners aren't privy to.

It is not likely and it would undermine the themes of Dante's character.

In exactly the same way that taking a character who has been forcibly raised as the wrong sex and making them trans undermines that what happened to them was in fact abusive.

In exactly the same way that the character arc of Prince Phillip's father deciding against forcing his son into marriage was undermined by Aurora and Phill hitting it off.

If the bad thing that happens to a character is contextualised as turning out to be the right thing, then that takes all the wind out of any commentary that existed before the recontextualization.

(In fact, the Sleeping Beauty example is openly a joke. This man is going through a personal crisis and risking war for what the audience knows is no reason.)

Making Dante a nonbinary human character means that this very thematic example of their depersonalisation was an abusive corporation being correct in their behaviour.

Dante being a non-human character, a robit or something, would still be better thematically as they have had a false human identity pressed upon them.

LBC functionally misgendering Dante reinforces their unethical ways, them respecting this character's pronouns does the exact opposite.

Edit 2: I also feel the need to point out that the view I have laid out here means that we are being forced as players to be complicit in this mistreatment. Something that is far more powerful than removing the problem entirely with a nonbinary identity.

Gli interessi militari dietro al ponte sullo stretto di Messina - Osservatorio Repressione

Anche la Nato preme per costruire il ponte sullo Stretto, l’infrastruttura servirà a collegare le basi di Sigonella e Napoli

A chi serve davvero il ponte sullo stretto di Messina? Il tema è tornato al centro dell’attenzione dopo che il governo ha deciso di riprendere il progetto infrastrutturale per collegare la Sicilia alla Calabria e sono emerse le forti pressioni dell’ambito militare – in particolare della Nato – per la realizzazione dell’opera. Più che attuare la costruzione dell’infrastruttura per migliorare la mobilità civile, infatti, l’investimento – lievitato oggi a 13,5 miliardi dai cinque del 2001 – servirebbe a migliorare la mobilità e i collegamenti delle basi militari del sud Italia, dove l’Alleanza atlantica gestisce le principali operazioni americane nel Mediterraneo. Per questo, l’opera è richiesta a gran voce dall’UE e dalla Nato, ossia da organizzazioni extranazionali che detengono cospicui interessi nel Paese e che – di fatto – decidono la linea da seguire grazie all’influenza determinante che esercitano sul governo di Roma. Nello specifico, l’opera dovrebbe rientrare nel Trans-European Transport Network, progetto europeo nato per migliorare la mobilità all’interno dell’Unione anche in un’ottica militare e di cui in Italia fa parte anche la Tav Torino-Lione.

A fugare ogni dubbio circa l’impiego e l’ottica prevalentemente militare del progetto, c’è una relazione presentata il 31 marzo dal governo Meloni – smaccatamente europeista e filo-Nato – in cui si specifica che il ponte sullo stretto rappresenta «un’infrastruttura fondamentale rispetto alla mobilità militare, tenuto conto della presenza di basi militari Nato nell’Italia meridionale». Da tempo, l’Alleanza atlantica evidenzia le lacune delle infrastrutture italiane: ponti che non reggono il peso dei mezzi militari, paesi con scarsi collegamenti interni, opere obsolete e scartamenti delle linee ferroviarie diversi rallentano il dispiegamento di mezzi e truppe in tempi rapidi. Nasce da queste esigenze la vera motivazione dietro al progetto del ponte sullo stretto, non certo dai bisogni della popolazione civile. Le necessità di ammodernamento ed efficientamento delle infrastrutture a scopi militari sono state naturalmente amplificate dai recenti avvenimenti in Ucraina.

Le aziende coinvolte nel progetto

Anche le aziende coinvolte nella costruzione del ponte hanno stretti legami col mondo bellico, a cominciare da WeBuild, società a cui già vent’anni fa lo Stato italiano aveva affidato l’esecuzione dell’opera e che ora chiede alla presidenza del Consiglio danni per 700 milioni di euro. L’azienda, oltre ad essere azionista per il 45% di Eurolink – consorzio a cui il governo vuole riaffidare l’incarico per la realizzazione del ponte – ha anche al suo attivo importanti lavori per il riammodernamento di infrastrutture militari: dall’aeroporto militare di Capodichino alla costruzione della tratta dell’alta velocità Novara-Milano al passante autostradale di Mestre. Questi ultimi due lavori sono volti a migliorare i collegamenti delle basi americane nel nord est italiano.

Altra azienda coinvolta nel consorzio è la Cooperativa Muratori Cementisti di Ravenna (CMC) che si è occupata già, tra le altre cose, del potenziamento infrastrutturale di Sigonella e delle strutture per ospitare i militari americani nell’aeroporto Dal Molin di Vicenza. Anche la Società Italiana Condotte d’Acqua è parte del progetto e ha anch’essa esperienze pregresse nel settore militare, tra cui la realizzazione di un hangar e fabbricati nella base elicotteri dell’Aviazione dell’esercito di Lamezia Terme.

Il caso Eurolink e la debolezza italiana

Un altro aspetto che lega il ponte alla Difesa è la nomina, da parte di WeBuild, di Gianni De Gennaro a presidente di Eurolink. De Gennaro è ex capo della Polizia e direttore della Direzione investigativa antimafia, nonché ex presidente della maggiore azienda attiva nei settori della difesa a compartecipazione statale, Leonardo. La sua nomina a capo del consorzio indica la natura prettamente militare del progetto nonché la volontà di mettere in sicurezza i cantiere oltre che di gestire i movimenti di protesta contro l’infrastruttura. Il movimento “No ponte”, ad esempio – che aveva ottenuto una vittoria nel 2012, quando il governo aveva predisposto lo stop al progetto, dopo una partecipatissima mobilitazione popolare – è tornato a far sentire la sua voce per impedirne o ritardarne la costruzione. Eventuali ritardi danneggerebbero non solo gli interessi delle aziende e del governo, ma della stessa Nato.

A ciò si aggiunge l’importante tema della “sovranità nazionale” rivendicata proprio dai partiti di centrodestra che in realtà sono stati i primi a tradirla accettando pesanti ingerenze negli affari interni, a partire proprio dall’esecuzione delle direttive Nato sul territorio nazionale. Un caso emblematico è quello del ministro dei Trasporti Matteo Salvini che, contrario all’opera fino a pochi anni fa, ha compiuto una giravolta politica in grande stile, pur di allinearsi al volere dominante degli enti sovranazionali che di fatto governano la penisola. Così, lo scorso maggio, Camera e Senato hanno dato il via libera a quella che viene considerata “la madre di tutte le grandi opere in Italia”.

L’insostenibilità e i rischi dell’opera

Secondo diversi esperti, tra cui il giornalista antimilitarista Antonio Mazzeo, l’opera non solo è irrealizzabile dal punto di vista ingegneristico ed economico, ma comporterebbe gravi rischi per l’Italia meridionale, tra cui una maggiore militarizzazione del territorio, il pericolo concreto di infiltrazioni mafiose e la sottrazione di fondi dai bisogni reali del territorio. «Il Ponte sullo Stretto è irrealizzabile come lo era dieci anni fa ma questa volta ci sono alcuni attori che stanno spingendo per avviare quest’opera. […] Un’opera di questa rilevanza non potrà non richiedere – e lo dicono le forze armate – una serie di interventi: batterie missilistiche (una sola batteria costa 800 milioni di euro, ndr), cacciabombardieri, il pattugliamento costante dei sottomarini. Questa è ovviamente un’ulteriore militarizzazione del territori», ha spiegato Mazzeo. Per quanto riguarda il pericolo di infiltrazioni mafiose, invece, il giornalista ha asserito che «Il rischio è che oggi, di fronte agli anticorpi di una cultura mafiosa, chi si promuove come realizzatore del ponte, fosse anche un mafioso, dovrebbe guadagnare una legittimità. Le grandi organizzazioni mafiose potrebbero legittimarsi come un grande elemento: prima abbiamo messo le bombe e fatto le stragi oggi facciamo il ponte e ci perdonate».

Ne emerge, dunque, un quadro dove intorno alla costruzione dell’infrastruttura orbita una rete di interessi che coinvolge diversi ambiti, da quello politico-militare a quello mafioso, e che va a scapito non solo delle esigenze del territorio locale, ma di tutta la nazione, sottomessa ai voleri di Nato, Ue e Stati Uniti e destinata ad essere sempre più militarizzata e subordinata al volere di organizzazioni e stati stranieri.
