🌟 BOOK REVIEW🌟 🌟 💫 Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Thank you, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Ballantine Books, Netgalley and TJR for the gift! I am a self-confessed TJR fan since Seven husbands so it will be a hard task to give an impartial review. Let's give it a shot. Carrie Soto is TJR creating her universe- The universe she created with Nina Riva in Malibu Rising. If you were wondering regarding all the characters which kept coming in and out in her previous outing, well here's the satisfying reveal. Carrie Soto isn't a typical TJR female lead though- it did take some time for her to grow on me. She is brash, in your face and the slow transformation with the introduction of Bowe and subsequent loss of her mentor, father, coach is a treat. The story- it's a fairly straightforward underdog sports fiction with the underdog being Carrie, a 20 times Grand Slam winning 37 years old retired tennis star making a comeback to defend her record against the enigmatic, Nicki Chan (definitely deserves a story of her own). If I have to crib about something, this was one TJR book where I was rooting for Nicki. Does Carrie Soto defend her crown in a grueling calendar year against the younger, faster and tougher opponents is what forms the crux of the tale. The research that went into the book is mind boggling- each game comes to life across the 4 grand slams- the ending is absolutely worth the wait- the rivalry between Nicki and Soto, the love hate relationship between Soto and Bowe and of course, the heartbreaking moments between the father daughter duo is what makes this one stand out. An absolute treat for TJR fans! One week to release- right around the #usopen time as well 🎾 #CarrieSotoIsBack #netgalley #randomhousepublishing #ballantinebooks #taylorjenkinsreid #bookstagram #arc #bookphotography #bookrecommendations #bookreview #fav #tennis https://www.instagram.com/p/ChnsTshrs-d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

May 1st! The SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT is here. There is a very good book coming in June, so mark your calendar. The Scent Of Burnt Flowers. ✍🏿 Very good. The magical realism derailed the story just a little, but that's my personal hangup. I just can’t seem to get comfortable with this “magical realism” business. I’m a fan of real realism. Having said that, I still recommend this book with great enthusiasm because Melvin and Bernadette have a suspenseful and anxiety filled journey from Alabama to Ghana. The emotions they encounter and how they process these emotions are heartfelt. Why the need for magic? Melvin, in a very brief fit of rage has made a terrible mistake. His solution is to make it to Ghana to connect with his college friend, who happens to be, the President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah. Ahhh, if they could just get an audience with Nkrumah things would be set right. The problem is, Nkrumah is constantly avoiding coup attempts, so he is not easily reachable. As, the couple get closer, the intrigue becomes more heart rendering sending your blood pressure up a few points, yes it feels that real. So, why the magic? Just so not necessary. The reader is easily pulled into the couple’s various machinations trying to stay one step ahead of the law, and although you understand the gravity of what has happened you root hard for the couple to experience a positive outcome. The story moves at a quick pace and the prose is feel inducing to the point that it isn’t necessary to tell the reader that the relationship is unraveling the prose leads the show. So again, why the magic, in what is so real of a story? As the FBI agent states upon learning of one of Nkrumah’s escapes, ““Birds that magically turn into soldiers and rescue a president? Now I’ve heard it all.” Yep, the magical realism was a spoiler of a great story but for fans of that literary device this one is for you! Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for an ARC, book is out June28, 2022 #ownvoicesreviews #randomhousepublishing #scentofburntflowers #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #bookreviewer #blackbooksmatter #netgalley #blitzbazawule #goodblackreads #blackbibliophile #r4 #makereadinglitagain (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdBDwoprBNJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I received an advanced reader copy of Wish You Were Here from Random House Publishing Group- Penguin Random House/Ballantine Books Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult is a story about love, loss, grief and self-discovery. Diana O’Toole’s life is going just as she planned…she’s on the cusp of a promotion at her dream job, she’s sure her resident, surgeon boyfriend, Finn, will be proposing in a few days while they are vacationing in the Galapagos. Diana is blindsided when Finn insists that she go without him- it’s March 2020, they live in New York City and Finn must stay behind and help the sick. Diana ends up stranded in the Galapagos when the island closes due to the pandemic. She’ll learn to rely on the kindness of strangers to get her through. Diana befriends a troubled teen, Beatriz, and her father, Gabriel- they show her all the hidden treasures of the Galapagos. As the shut down lingers on Diana will find herself questioning the future she had planned for herself. This was a fast, easy read with a sympathetic storyline that many are still trying to navigate. Better Off Dead is the 2nd book from Andrew Child after taking over Reacher from his brother, Lee. It doesn’t release until October but it had to jump to the front of the line. "Reacher is headed to San Francisco when he passes a wrecked car. He stops to help and soon finds himself in the middle of helping the occupant find her brother and bring justice to the ones who hurt him." This book is closer to the Reacher we have come to know and love. We like that a man, larger-than-life, is out roaming the highways, sticking up for the little guy. This is a complicated telling of a typical Reacher storyline - a damsel in distress, someone has criminal control of the community and police, they underestimate Reacher. One difference in Andrew's style is that he is very detailed in most of the fighting scenes. It doesn't detract from the story but is a noticeable difference. The beginning was interesting - makes you wonder about the rest of the series. Fans of Reacher will enjoy this book. It is a fast-paced read. I'm glad that Andrew has taken over the Reacher story arc. It has to be difficult to make an iconic character your own, but he is successful in doing that. Glad to see Reacher is back. Great read from Andrew Child. #betteroffdead #andrewchild #leechild #jackreacher #jackreacherbooks #randomhousepublishing #ballantinebooks #delacortepress #actionfiction #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookish #bookreview #hardcover #bookcover #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller #netgalley #netgalleyreviewer https://www.instagram.com/p/CSufDBfrxvJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Rafe, The Maverick - Classy Vintage
Rafe, The Maverick – Classy Vintage
I don’t recall reading Kay Hooper but “Rafe, The Maverick” was very interesting and captivating. The prologue of history was fascinating and the entire premise of the story sure was enthralling. Rafe Delaney as the cocky, rich and handsome owner of Shamrock Ranch is just that, but add in protectiveness and loads of stubbornness and you have a hero hard to resist. The petite, beautiful and…

ARC Review: Risking It All (Naked Men #1) by Christi Barth
Description
Who doesn’t love Naked Men? In Christi Barth’s irresistible series, a group of close-knit friends talk out their problems with naked honesty on a popular blog. Bonded by a high-school tragedy, they’re moving on from the past—and fighting for the future with strong and sassy women.
Griffin Montgomery helps people. As a teenager, he kept his best friends alive after their soccer team’s bus crashed in the Alps. Now, as a Coast Guard search and rescue pilot, he saves lives with reckless abandon—until he goes too far and earns a lengthy suspension. Working on the Naked Men projects keeps his mind busy, but Griff’s itching to get back in the action. That’s when he finds his latest rescue mission: a pretty wallflower who’s stuck in her comfort zone.
Chloe Widmore doesn’t take risks. As a professional letter writer, she gets enough excitement out of expressing other people’s emotions. So when the hottest man she’s ever seen invades her coffee shop, Chloe surprises herself with how much she wants to be with him. Routines make her feel safe. Griff makes her deliciously unsafe, in so many ways. But falling for him is one risk she might just have to take . . . whether she’s ready or not.

My Review
When the WTF?! (and not in a good way) moments out do the sweet, funny ones and the only characters who hold your interest at the end of the book are the female lead's bestie and a character that was mentioned, but never made an appearance in the book, you know it wasn’t meant to be.
This book had the components to make it a good read: Hot alpha male with a saviour complex collides with a woman who has a sassy streak and yet won’t step outside of the very restrictive box she’s constructed for herself. Both have tragic, life altering experiences in their pasts that have made them who they are today, but find that if they want a future together they’ll have to face those demons and let the past go. Add in the fact that there is a group of guys who run a blog and it promised to be at least a fun read, but unfortunately this book just didn’t work for me in the end.
Griffin and I started off on a good foot. I understood why he had a saviour complex and found him to be pretty charming and easy going and then the incident at about 30% happened and I blinked. I understood why it was a thing and I can say that if it were me on the receiving end of it I’d definitely have a “Whoa. Hold up” moment,  but his reaction to it was just way too over the top for me. I mean holy mantrum, Batman. Unfortunately, from that point on I saw him in a different light and though it wasn’t a bad one, it kept him from getting out of the realm of “I just liked him”.
As for Chloe, she and I didn’t start off on a good foot, I found her a bit too quick to judge and critical of people that it rubbed me the wrong way, and that unfortunately colored my view of her throughout the book. This isn’t to say that she didn’t have me wanting to high five her at various moments in the book, the way she dealt incident at 30% was awesome, or admiring her for how she stepped up during the incident in her past, but whole first impression thing never left me.
So with my pretty tepid feelings toward Griff and Chloe it’s not that hard for anyone to surmise that their relationship didn’t get me going all that much. There were some sweet moments and I liked that they did their best to communicate with each other, but it just was okay for me.
Now about the secondary cast of characters especially The Naked Men. See I’m not sure if I really like them or not.  I’m all for the bros before hos way of thinking and backing your boys to the bitter end, I really am, because I’m all for the flip side where I have my girls backs, and that saying fits them to a T. There were some fun moments with them, but there were also moments when I wanted to find a 2x4 and smack them upside the heads because even though I could understand their reasoning, I just couldn’t help but go WTF? I don’t expect male characters to be all emo’d out and warm and fuzzy, but even I was thrown for a loop at some of their comments (90%) The only one saved from any thoughts of bodily harm was Logan and that’s only because he never made an appearance in the book, he was just talked about, which actually ended up making him a hell of a lot more interesting than the rest because he is an unknown.  And last but not least there is Summer, Chloe’s best friend. I liked her spunk and sass and finding out about her past has me wanting to know more about her.
The Bottom Line: Risking It All and I didn’t get on well, but I’ll be keeping an eye on the series to see if Logan or Summer get their own books.

Someone Is Watching by Joy Fielding
I want to Thank Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the Advanced copy in exchange for this review.
From the first chapter I could not peel myself away from my Kindle. Someone is Watching is one of those books that plays like a movie in your head. To me this is a testament to the writing.
To be honest the beginning scenes were very hard to read as Bailey suffers a vicious and violent attack. After she is released from the hospital, Bailey struggles greatly to heal. Her phsycal wounds are healing but inside she is shattered. Especially since her attacker is out there and the police have zero suspects.
Bailey's half sister and neice (her neice Jade is my favorite character! She is hilarious and horrible and wonderful) come to try help Bailey come to terms and take care of herself. Bailey is unable to leave to her apartment but doesnt need to see what is around her. Alls he needs is her binoculars........
So many twists and turns and mystery, it is nearly impossible to put this book down. it would be like watching a great Law and Order and pausing it right when it gets good. Joy Fielding's writing is smooth, seamless, and contains whip smart dialogue.
See if you can guess who the attacker is. See if you can figure out who she can REALLY trust. I usually can tell who did within the first 2 chapters. (if the culprit has been introduced) but it took me 3/4 of the book before I had an inkling.
Joy Fieliding is a Bestseller author for a reason. Quite simply, she seems to have been born to write. I for one am grateful.

I received an advanced reader copy of Dear Edward from The Dial Press/Random House Publishing Group via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano is a story about navigating grief. Twelve year old Edward and his family are moving from New York City to California. A moving company is transferring their belongings, while Edward, his older brother, Jordan, and his parents fly across the country. However, something goes terribly wrong and Edward is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Over the next few years, Edward comes to terms with his new reality and this is his story. I loved this book and enduring the roller coaster of life with Edward. The author did a great job of making all of the characters authentic with relatable issues. If you’re on the hunt for a book with all the feels, pick up Dear Edward, available today, Monday, January 6, 2020. I received an advanced reader copy of Last Day from Random House Publishing Group via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Last Day by Domenica Ruta is a story about making amends. The Last Day is May 28th – every year on this day, across the world, people celebrate Last Day. Many people attend large parties celebrating the day that could be the end of the world. Others seek out people they’ve wronged to apologize before the world ends. Last Day follows a handful of people on this Last Day…Bear, an American astronaut living on the International Space Station; Sara, a teenager in love with an older man and Karen, a woman that doesn’t adhere to any of society’s rules. Will they make amends with those they hurt or will they celebrate the lives they’ve led? This book was funny the the story line just didn’t work for me. The story was going to end one of two ways- it took forever to get there and was messy. This book was very wordy- a thesaurus may have exploded in it. Last Day is came out May 28, 2019 or Last Day.
