SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! Here we are, with another eclectic book selection for you all to add to your reading list. If you are a lover of language and scintillating prose, this is a book you will love. My 💭; This is a novel of beautiful language. The prose is other-worldly and I think the plot is rather loose, but when the writing is this beautiful, the looseness of plot is but a minor annoyance. Alissa is a troubled lady who finds her settled in 1920’s South Africa with her Englishman husband. When the Immorality Act is passed which basically outlaws relations between Whites and Natives, Alissa, husband and their two daughters realize that a change in place is a necessity. This prompts Alissa to initiate a horrid act, and leaves the reader with a big ? Later when some of her journals are found, we are let in on her state of mind, but nothing detailing the whys. The construction of great paragraphs and greater sentences aids the reader in overlooking the thinness of explanation. And just as you might begin to tire of such, the novel concludes, and you will sit mesmerized by the language you just experienced and sometime later may add a little disappointing note about plot. I can’t wait to read whatever is next. A beautiful writer she is. Thanks to Harpervia and Netgalley for an advanced DRC. Book is out and available wherever books are sold. #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #scatterlings #harperviabooks #bookblogger #blackbibliophile #bookreview #bookrecommendation #readmorebooks #readology2023 #whodoesitbetter #bookstagram #bookstagrammer (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpIhx3ALY-W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! 3/26. Are we checking on our mental health? Do we realize the importance of doing so? Well @drcoreyyeager has dropped a book that will help you initiate the conversation with self! How Am I Doing? Yes it’s shining under the spotlight! My 💭; A necessary book. Why? It’s important to check in with yourself in order to maintain a healthy mental outlook. Right from the first question, the foundation is established by making it clear that you are the star in your own show. And if you don’t take care of the star, you can’t be of much use to others. This is not a self-help book per se, but there are many strategies that can assist one in having conversations with self that are honest and intimate. MJ said, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror” and Corey Yeager is expounding on that statement and forcing the conversation with self. How am I? Well after reading this book and putting it on my reference table, I’m better and moving towards best. This is one, you’ll keep going back to, just to sharpen the conversation and deepen the understanding. A big thank you to Dr. Corey Yeager. We continue giving you the skinny on books you won’t see featured anywhere else on IG, Right!! #ownvoicesreviews #howamidoing #drcoreyyeager #harpercelebrate #mentalhealthawareness #bookpusherforlife #pushingbooksainteasy #readmorebooks #blackbibliophile #goodblackreads #blackbooksmatter #goodreads #readology2023 #readingismylife #makereadinglitagain #blackbibliophile (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqQPqJULGAz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT 3.19. Mychal Denzel Smith is the author that brought us, Invisible Man:Got The Whole World Watching and this new offering STAKES IS HIGH is engaging enough to be in the SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! My 💭; The stakes are indeed high! And time is running short. Mychal Denzel Smith is writing here with a sense of urgency. “There is a future that is not as grim as our past. But it is a future that depends on a bravery this country has never exhibited. It requires excess honesty and a radical retelling of who America has been. It will mean letting go of our myths and fashioning new selves based around principles we have thus far found difficult to live up to. We will have to relinquish old dreams and replace them with ones that meet the challenges we now face. We will have to do it quickly.” After this quote from the forethought, Mr. Smith takes us through four parts; Delusions, Justice, Accountability, and Freedom. Each part is essentially an extended essay written in searing prose that is intended to singe the consciousness. If America is to survive as a civilized democracy, then change must happen yesterday according to Mr. Smith. Stop with the myth making! Abolish the police! I’m sure he’s in for major pushback on that one. But hear him out on what that could look like. The statement itself, without context sounds incendiary, but that is of course why one reads, to gain a deeper understanding, right? So, all in all, Mr. Smith is challenging “Americans” to decide what kind of country you want to live in. There is no soft shoe, it’s tough love and digestion of these challenges may be tough for most, but you will be a more informed person for sure, from having read Mr. Smith’s ideas. Go get it! SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! It’s that time again, and we’re springing ahead with another spotlight! (See what I did there 🤣)Today we are shining the light on Roland Martin. He currently is the host of his own internet news series, Roland Martin Unfiltered. So big ups for that, the only Black owned and operated news show across the web! Well, he has a new book out and I have some thoughts I’d like to share. My 💭; Quick read. Slim volume. Nothing really new here. I really don’t like the term “majority-minority”which Roland Martin uses numerous times in this book. For a journalist of his renown, it strikes me as lazy. I know that term has recently become in vogue, but it really locks Black people and other people of color into being “minority” even as they become the majority. What’s wrong with saying white folks will no longer be the majority? As of 2043, white folks will be the minority. So, how can the current minority move into the majority position, yet still be referred to as minorities? Things that make you go hmmm. That fact aside, Roland Martin does an adequate job of exposing white fear and how it has been manipulated throughout the years to prompt actions that have been detrimental to Black folks. This fear and/or backlash has been written about in other places more forcefully and with more depth. But, this book is a good starting point to begin the white fear conversation, and Roland Martin gives you enough here to properly prepare one to intelligently engage in that conversation. 3.5 ⭐️. I bought my copy from @kindredstorieshtx and for all the latest books you should pay them a visit. Can’t make it in person? SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT Ohh baby. This is the one. I posted about this book back in December and the time is now(Tuesday) that everyone can enjoy Rootless! My 💭; This is a debut?? Ok, I’m officially wowed, Ms.Krystle Appiah. You have brought a grown man to tears with that unexpected ending. The denouement was such a surprise, mainly because it was so skillfully tucked away into a beautiful story of family, home, motherhood, honesty, and the importance of being rooted in every sense of that word. I can’t believe this is a debut. The protagonist, Efe, is so richly fleshed out, that you feel every emotion right along with her, as if she is real. If you don’t feel this, check your empathy muscles and see that they haven’t atrophied. This work is beautifully constructed and even though we know from the publisher summary that Efe and Sam will be husband and wife, that knowledge doesn’t disturb the story of them coming together, that is due to the great pacing and placing of various scenarios, all highly realistic and relatable. After Sam and Efe have their first child, Efe suffers from postpartum depression, Ms.Krystle Appiah handles this so adroitly that it’s not even named nor forcefully thrust upon readers. After her recovery from postpartum, Efe and Sam work hard to rebuild their relationship and one can imagine after that experience how difficult that could be. Ms. Appiah could have taken the readers down the heavy drama road but thankfully she didn’t and kept us on the real and engaging journey. By this point in the novel the reader will know they are in the capable hands of a writer flirting with greatness. Those plotting decisions result in a top notch debut. READ THIS! I’m guaranteeing right now, this will unquestionably be one of your best reads of ‘23! It’s that damn good! Thanks to Netgalley and Ballantine Books for an ARC. #ownvoicesreviews #rootless #ballantinebooks #krystlezaraappiah #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #bookblogger #blackbibliophile #blackbooksmatter #bookstagram #bookreviewer #readmorebooks #readology2023 #noonedoesitbetter (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpaHt8DL_DI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! If you want to bring some levity to your reading selections, then you won’t find a better book to fill that taste. What Happened To Ruthy Ramirez will provide the joy and cheer you didn’t know you needed on your plate. A wise man once told me; “just because you make light of a situation doesn’t mean you take that situation lightly.” My 💭; The book title is more statement than question. But after reading the book, the statement becomes question. What indeed happened to Ruthy Ramirez? The answer is not really in these pages, not in the literal sense. It’s more of who is Ruthy Ramirez? And we find out who she is through her two sisters and her mother, Dolores. I’m not sure if Claire Jimenez was aiming for a comedic novel, but that is what she produced. The dialogue and interaction between sisters and mother is funny and lighthearted with a sense of realism. This is a hilarious read although the title would lead you to believe this is a very serious undertaking. And don’t get me wrong, the disappearance of a 13 year-old is consequential, but the novel doesn’t deep dive into the missing Ruthy, we get the effects of missing Ruthy on those she left behind. And those details are told with no shortage of straightforward hilarity that will give you laugh out loud moments. You almost forget that Ruthy is missing, until a reality show, called “Catfight” enters the story and the sisters think they are onto something. And, the feel of the novel takes a heavier turn but the hilarity is still intact. So, that’s a win for readers and a win for debut author Claire Jimenez. Thanks to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for an advanced DRC. The book will drop on March 7, 2023 #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #whathappenedtoruthyramirez #clairejimenez #grandcentralpublishing #readmorebooks #readology2023 #sundayspotlight2023 #blackbibliophile #latinawriters #latinawomenauthors #bookblogger #bookstagram #bookreviewer #readingismylife #books4usbyus #eclecticbookchoices #booksaremylife (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CokL0BALOgx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s Sunday! So you know it’s the SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! First before we look at the book shining under the light, let’s acknowledge the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. He dedicated his life to the uplift of Black people. Please be not confused by various people and groups trying to twist his words and legacy. He was a Black freedom fighter! So salute to the King! Now to the SPOTLIGHT! Hip-hop fans will delight in this comprehensive look at Hip-hop from the beginning to present day. My 💭: A walk down memory lane. Johnathan Abrams takes us all the way back to the birth of hip-hop. And it was a reminder for me, if some great times and lots of fun. As he went through the growing years, mentioning crews and songs, memories came flooding back to me. This is a definitive chronicle of the building of what we know now as hip-hop culture. Johnathan Abrams seemingly spoke with everyone who was someone bringing this book alive. Hearing from some of hip-hop’s luminaries as they don the 20-20 lens of hindsight fills in some of the mysterious holes. You know, those rumors you heard about rapper X, but never could quite confirm. Some of those underground stories are brought to surface here. Thanks to the Crown publishing group and Netgalley for an advanced digital copy. #thecomeup #crownbooks #johnathanabrams #netgalley #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #blackbibliophile #readmorebooks #blackbooksmatter #bookstagram #bookblogger #bookreviewer #sundayspotlight2023 #readology2023 (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CncG_5QrCgS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Let’s go, SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT 2023! We had a great 2022 and now we’re ready to share book thoughts throughout 2023. Always helping readers make decisions about what books to spend time with. And this one qualifies as worthy of your time. My 💭; Impressive. This is adult novel-ing at its finest. Just very well written wrapped in realistic dialogue and adult situations. The story is an enjoyable one with a well paced road trip that is between Frankie and her older Aunt, who she doesn’t really know a lot about, but will find out a great deal about her Mom’s sister on their extended if unintended road trip. Some interesting Los Angeles history surrounding the opening of the first Black hotel in LA and the story moves back and forth between late 1920s LA and ‘68 Chicago. Denny S. Bryce does an an excellent job of building the back stories of Daisy and Frankie. The dilemmas they face are realistic and working through these conflicts puts the reader front and center in an engaging story. Thanks to Edelweiss and Kensington for a DRC. Happy New Year! 2023 is here! SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT is here! As we embark on the new year, you will see many lists, ‘ most anticipated reads’, ‘best books’ ‘must have’ and so on and so forth. So today’s spotlight highlights six books that should be on ANY list. I’ve read four of them and I’m desperately trying to get ahold of the other two. So take a look, jot them down, remember the release dates and read them and then tell someone to tell someone. #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #bookblogger #bookreviewer #readmorebooks #blackbooksmatter #readology2023 #sundayspotlight2023 #makereadinglitagain #thehouseofeve #rootless #youneverknow #manwhowouldbeking #lonewomen #crookmanifesto #readinginhouston https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm35RxtAjFt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Yes, yes . I know it’s the day they call Christmas. So to all who partake, enjoy. It’s also Sunday, which means it is THE SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!!! And for the last Sunday of the year, I give you Andre’s Aces. The fabulous five! These are the best five books I read in 2022! They all deserve your attention. So pull back the red curtain(swipe left) to reveal the Five Aces!! Didn’t Nobody Give a Shit What Happened to Carlotta 🏆All the conventions of writing fiction are kicked to the curb and it’s done so lustrously. Dr. No 🏆 Percival Everett is the best person currently writing fiction, period. Mother Country 🏆 A book that will stir all the emotions as you consider the weight of ethics and morality. Yonder 🏆 A story of the stolen and the thieves amplifying love and tenderness. South To America 🏆 Ms. Imani Perry is the best person writing non-fiction in these times. The Queen! This book proves it, as she easily shifts through genres, as she takes the readers on a journey South! So, that’s all folks, and if you want to read my thoughts on these great books, you’ll have to scroll through my feed and click on the covers. P.S. As an addendum, the best bookstore in the Southwest, USA is hands down @kindredstorieshtx. They have the best mix of inventory, customer service, appearance, and customer engagement. Terri Hamm is bringing a professionalism to book retailing, that is often lacking in many of our establishments! If you are in Houston, TX go check them out. If not you can order online. They are very deserving of your support. #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #kindredstories #imaniperry #jabariasim #percivaleverett #jacindatownsend #jameshanaham #blackbooksmatter #goodblackreads #sundayspotlight #blackbibliophile #readologist #readmorebooks #bestbooksof2022 (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cml6w8eLMS5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A beautiful Sunday Boookstagramers and I have a question for all the long time readers. Do you remember Connie Briscoe? Big Girls Don’t Cry and Sisters & Lovers, her first two novels made a big splash commercially and critically. Well Ms. Briscoe has returned and she steps into the SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT with You Never Know. I ✍🏾 Connie Briscoe is back. I’m thrilled to see Connie Briscoe back. When she first hit the scene she was heralded as a writer-to-watch. She came out the blocks strong with two successful novels. She took a snooze for a few years, dropped a couple more books, but lost her initial momentum. Oh, but now, now she is back with a propulsive edge-of-the-seat thriller/suspense novel that is vey well paced. It’s an easy engaging read with protagonist Alexis being an easy character to root for. Read the blurb for the plot(it represents the book well). This novel will no doubt return Connie Briscoe to her original place of prominence in the book world. And I for one am glad to see it, welcome back Connie Briscoe! Thanks to Amistad Press and Edelweiss for an advanced reading copy. Book will drop into stores March 14, 2023, get ready. Grand rising grammers. It’s the first Sunday in December, so the year is rapidly coming to a close, and that means I will soon be posting my FABULOUS FIVE of 2022. I call them Andre’s Aces. I’ve settled on four and I’m torn on the fifth. Anyhoo, as always, stay tuned to this account. *************************** Let’s get on to SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! And, listen. Hear me good on this one. Plan your preorders now. This book drops in March and you don’t want to miss it! What did I think you ask?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I ✍🏾. Just extremely well executed. Drop of history due to her diligent research and a tough look at young women who are seemingly out of options. Is there a way to provide a safety net for these children. After reading The House of Eve, your imagination will awaken and possibilities will abound. Sadeqa Johnson makes the story of Eleanor and Ruby come alive with pitch perfect pacing and effortless prose. It’s a beautifully rendered novel that is extremely easy to fall into and find a rhythm. I don’t want to get into plot points and spoil it for potential readers, just know that as Eleanor and Ruby’s stories unfold in alternating chapters you can feel their lives will intersect and when Ruby is on her way to DC from Philadelphia, the only mystery is how these two women will cross into each other. The way Sadeqa Johnson builds this story and constructs the bridge from Ruby to Eleanor is simply extraordinary. Sadeqa exhibits all the tools of an accomplished novelist and deserves to be mentioned among the best writing today. I urge all who are reading this to mark their calendar for March 7, 2023 and get this book. Thanks to Simon & Schuster and Edelweiss an advanced reading copy. #thehouseofeve #sadequajohnson #simonandschuster #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #bookblogger #bookreviewer #sundayspotlight #readologist #whodoesitbetter? #blackbibliophile #blackbooksmatter #readmorebooks (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clv-qTGLD6n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! Just returned yesterday from Cancun (a much needed vacation) and had a good week of reading. As I catch up on my reviews they will all be here in THE SPOTLIGHT! But today the light is on Someday, Maybe. In keeping with my core principle of honesty, I must say, this was a tough read for me. Emotionally. Mentally. Spiritually. Was difficult to find any joy, well the writing contained some beautiful sentences and paragraphs but the content, whoa. I wrote ✍🏾 Overwhelming. To say this is a grief filled novel is the ultimate understatement. The ability of this author to immerse the reader in grief over 350 pages is astonishing. I mean, whew. It just never stopped. It was unrelenting, to the point that you feel like you are experiencing grief along with the character. As a trigger warning, anyone who has dealt with the suicide of a loved one may want to steer clear. The four stars are for the beautiful paragraphs that offer temporary respite from the trauma that inherits page after page after page. At some point, I was begging for the end, the only relief coming when I knew I was near the finish line. A tough read. #ownvoicesreviews #bookstagram #pushingbooksainteasy #bookpusher #somedaymaybe #blackbooksmatter #blackbookstagram #bookreview #blackbibliophile #onyinwabineli #readmorebooks #readingismylife #booksaremylife #bookblogger #goodblackreads #makereadinglitagain #sundayspotlight #readreadread (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjfktaFrf6V/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s that time again. The Sunday Spotlight is here. And our forever First Lady is shining brightly. I know I’m late reading this but here are my thoughts 👉🏿 Very well done. I kept jumping over this book for the last 3 years. I finally picked it up and I’m so glad I got to this. Michelle gives a fine accounting of her life and paints the picture of an anyone girl that given the right help and the right reach anything is possible. So she stresses that she is nothing special, and I think that message is appropriate. It’s important that she presents it in this manner less people think that she is some kind of unicorn. She pushes back against the idea that you must be something special to succeed if you are a Black girl from the Southside of Chicago. The fact of the matter is Michelle’s success is available to anyone who receives the kind of support Michelle received along with some solid parenting and love from them and extended family. I’m so impressed that she made sure that idea of potential success showed up on the page. She also never lost sight of her privilege as she moved into the White House and became the nations First Lady. So the writing is very candid and there are some fun details that she shares, of course how she and Barack met is a heartwarming story and mostly she presents him as a genuine and sincere individual who is caring and loving. She shares what life was like inside the bubble, and the difficulty of trying to raise daughters in a normal way as possible, still keeping an awareness of how privileged she was to have security, butlers, maids, cooks, assistants all at her disposal. She doesn’t downplay the bubble life at all. All this forthrightness makes for a comfortable and enjoyable read. Good stuff! #ownvoicesreviews #becoming #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #bookstagram #bookreview #goodblackreads #readmorebooks #books #michelleobama #goodreads #crownbooks #readalot (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUSl6nZL0XN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Wednesday email notification. Shout out to Doubleday books and Edelweiss for gifting this ebook!! It sounds like a winner. Will jump into this weekend. Of course Colson has been on a serious role of late so I’m eagerly anticipating this story. Let’s go! From the Publisher: "Ray Carney was only slightly bent when it came to being crooked . . ." To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Cash is tight, especially with all those installment-plan sofas, so if his cousin Freddie occasionally drops off the odd ring or necklace, Ray doesn't ask where it comes from. He knows a discreet jeweler downtown who doesn't ask questions, either. Thus begins the internal tussle between Ray the striver and Ray the crook. As Ray navigates this double life, he begins to see who actually pulls the strings in Harlem. Can Ray avoid getting killed, save his cousin, and grab his share of the big score, all while maintaining his reputation as the go-to source for all your quality home furniture needs? Harlem Shuffle's ingenious story plays out in a beautifully recreated New York City of the early 1960s. It's a family saga masquerading as a crime novel, a hilarious morality play, a social novel about race and power, and ultimately a love letter to Harlem. But mostly, it's a joy to read, another dazzling novel from the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning Colson Whitehead. #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #doubledaybooks #harlemshuffle #readmorebooks #bibliophile #ownvoicesreviews #goodblackreads #colsonwhitehead #bookreview #bookreviews #bookstagrammer #readingislife (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNaSxYarQCV/?igshid=18kbj3iuc8lj1
