SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! If you want to bring some levity to your reading selections, then you won’t find a better book to fill that taste. What Happened To Ruthy Ramirez will provide the joy and cheer you didn’t know you needed on your plate. A wise man once told me; “just because you make light of a situation doesn’t mean you take that situation lightly.” My 💭; The book title is more statement than question. But after reading the book, the statement becomes question. What indeed happened to Ruthy Ramirez? The answer is not really in these pages, not in the literal sense. It’s more of who is Ruthy Ramirez? And we find out who she is through her two sisters and her mother, Dolores. I’m not sure if Claire Jimenez was aiming for a comedic novel, but that is what she produced. The dialogue and interaction between sisters and mother is funny and lighthearted with a sense of realism. This is a hilarious read although the title would lead you to believe this is a very serious undertaking. And don’t get me wrong, the disappearance of a 13 year-old is consequential, but the novel doesn’t deep dive into the missing Ruthy, we get the effects of missing Ruthy on those she left behind. And those details are told with no shortage of straightforward hilarity that will give you laugh out loud moments. You almost forget that Ruthy is missing, until a reality show, called “Catfight” enters the story and the sisters think they are onto something. And, the feel of the novel takes a heavier turn but the hilarity is still intact. So, that’s a win for readers and a win for debut author Claire Jimenez. Thanks to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for an advanced DRC. The book will drop on March 7, 2023 #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #whathappenedtoruthyramirez #clairejimenez #grandcentralpublishing #readmorebooks #readology2023 #sundayspotlight2023 #blackbibliophile #latinawriters #latinawomenauthors #bookblogger #bookstagram #bookreviewer #readingismylife #books4usbyus #eclecticbookchoices #booksaremylife (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CokL0BALOgx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The last SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT of 2021! It has been a great year of reading for me and I offer you one of the very best in the final SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! My thoughts on the 1619 Project✍🏿 Ida B. Wells once said, ‘the way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.’ And the light of truth would serve as a great subtitle to the 1619 project. Nikole Hannah-Jones has created a project that exposes the oft-suppressed legacy of slavery. To believe that slavery has no effect on today's circumstances that plague African-Americans is simply asinine. And so here comes the historical record brilliantly organized, thoughtfully and thoroughly explained in most areas of people's activity. Law, politics, religion, music, healthcare, and even traffic. This is a book that executes and excoriates all the excuses. Because, as Biggie said, “if you don’t know, now you know.” You can no longer dwell in willful ignorance after reading this work. It’s not a rewriting of history, as some misguided and mean spirited critics have claimed. It is a corrective to the myth, that great and benevolent white men carved out a country from nothingness. That they did this alone and without contributions from Indigenous and enslaved populations is unquestionably myth. So, when we tell our own story, we do so with an authenticity that brings great clarity and fills in the cracks and crevices of what was/is hidden in the annals of history. And Nikole Hannah-Jones has crafted a project that tells in scintillant prose the journey of the enslaved. What would America be without the contributions of the enslaved? The recondite nature of some stories, both trauma and triumph, clearly gives flavor and favor to the idea that the present echoes the past. How can one intelligently continue to deny that? “This is our national truth: America would not be America without the wealth from Black labor, without Black striving, Black ingenuity, Black resistance. So much of the music, the food, the language, the art, the scientific advances, the athletic renown, the fashion, the guarantees of civil rights, the oratory and intellectual inspiration that we export to the world………. Great giveaway taking place on my IG account. Head over there and get in the game. https://www.instagram.com/books4usbyus/ REVIEW ✍🏿A timely and helpful children's book. Tessie has a habit of continuously talking and is a poor listener. Thankfully the adults around her have patience and with the help of her teacher and counselor teach Tessie some lessons on how to cultivate good listening skills. What is great about this children's book for 2nd grade level ages 5-9 are the tips at the end for educators and adults. The author stresses the importance of modeling good listening skills and rejecting the impulse to just quiet a talkative child. In the book we see the teacher having the patience to help Tessie not just attempt to silence her. An impressive example is presented in these pages of how to channel energy of an expressive child. This should be required reading for EVERY child education teacher.Children like Tessie too often get labeled and tracked as disruptive and not worthy of a teacher's time and effort. I will certainly recommend to all I know and I'm sure if you read it you too will do the same.
