i'm sure people have said it before but i'll never stop being confused about the existence of "night shifts" on starships. like. it's space. there's no day or night. there's no reason why night shifts would have less happening than day shifts. if you're travelling in space, you're gonna run into shit no matter what time it is. it makes no sense to arbitrarily designate half of the day as more important than the other half. if anything it would make the most sense for the Captain and XO to be on opposite schedules so there would always be a senior officer on duty and maximize efficiency. (or idk have some system of multiple first officers each in charge of one shift.) and to have all the staff evenly split between shifts.

and what if there's an alien species on a completely different circadian rhythm? i guess the closest we see is Phlox who is canonically just awake working all the time except for when he hibernates but what about someone who sleeps two hours and is awake for 4 hours. how do you accommodate that sleep schedule? what about species who hibernate for years? what if two ships need to rendezvous but one is a Bajoran ship operating on 26 hour time and one is an Earth ship operating on 24 hour time? did the Federation decide 24 hour time is universal and is based in San Francisco? if so then that's pretty shitty to other planets or people who live on the opposite side of Earth. is everyone just living with a lifetime case of jet lag like how people on the western side of timezones have worse sleep than those on the east?

ik this is an incredibly lame observation, but it feels very apparent that the design of elendel was based on ebenezer howard’s idea of an urban utopia - the garden city

it mimics the structure of a garden city by having the very concentric and intentional canals and streets that divide the city into different sectors. it has the main roads that follow the grand avenue structure, even if the smaller streets divert entirely from the grid structure that howard posited for the entire city. and with the field and government buildings in central city, it mimics the intent to have green space and “public” buildings as the centroid. and where the garden city wanted to have a grand canal bisecting the city, instead it’s the irongate river. but the other canals do follow the geometric pattern suggested by howard, even to the extent of these canals connecting the rest of the elendel basin to elendel itself.
