Kidnapping

In December 2023, a Florida court sentenced ex-Hialeah Police Officer Rafael Otano to over 60 months in prison and 5 years of probation after he was found guilty of kidnapping a homeless.

Otano was one of two Hialeah Police Department officers who were accused of beating up a homeless man and then trying to cover up their actions. He had been a member of the force for three years before he was terminated from the job.

Otano and Lorenzo Orfila — a 23-year-old officer and five-year member of Hialeah Police — were arrested after they allegedly responded to a nuisance call on Dec. 17, 2022, about a man said to be harassing businesses and patrons at a Hialeah shopping plaza.

That man — identified as Jose Ortega Gutierrez, 51 — was taken into custody and instead of being transported to county jail, prosecutors said Otano and Orfila took him to a dump site before beating him up and abandoning him.

An off-duty police detective just happened to cross paths in the detective's north Hialeah neighborhood with Gutierrez several hours after the incident and called the police.

"He had a cut or laceration on top of his head," said the detective, testifying with a condition that he not be publicly identified. "His face looked swollen and bruised. His clothes looked torn and he appeared intoxicated."

There's so many so I'm making a silly bulleted list. Most of these are from the renaissance period though, and some of them may have more to do with the artist rather than the art itself!

Michelangelo has so few artworks out there because he, like da Vinci, frequently gave up on paintings and sculptures if it wasn't meeting his standards!

Rafaele looked up to Michelangelo, so much so that he added an insert of Michelangelo into the School of Athens.

Also in the School of Athens, Socrates is said to be an insert of Leonardo da Vinci! And it's the only reason why we think we know what da Vinci looked like!!!

One of my professors simply telling me that Rafaele was "Bi as hell" and "there is no conceivable way possible that Leonardo and Michelangelo were not (separately) gay."

ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI'S CASE. Trigger warning for SA and torture if you look into her court case but it is one of the most well-documented cases from the 1600s and its absolutely heartbreaking.

Michelangelo's David was sculpted from a cracked piece of marble that several other sculptors gave up on using because they felt it was imperfect.

Michelangelo hated painting but agreed to paint the Sistine Chapel because the pope wanted him specifically to do it.

Filippo Brunelleschi gave up on sculpting and metal work because he lost a metal-working contest in Florence to Lorenzo Ghiberti and didn't get to sculpt the doors to the Duomo di Firenze. But then he went on to design the dome at the top of the Duomo with zero known architectural experience and even had Ghiberti on his construction and design team.

Brunelleschi also designed and created the first ever double-axel gears/pulley system using Oxen and a reversible gear shifting system!!!

Michelangelo's The Last Judgement was heavily inspired by Dante Alighieri's La Divina Comedia. In fact, most of his work was inspired by Alighieri.

Caravaggio sent a self portrait of himself as Goliath getting slain by David to the Papal court in hopes of receiving a pardon, and he DID get the pardon but he was already dead.

At some point people in Italy post-Renaissance viewed nude art as "porn" and it was ordered that ever nude painting and sculpture be covered up somehow- this is where the whole "cover it with a leaf" motif came from! Michelangelo's Last Judgement is a huuuuge victim of this.

This is everything I can think of off the top of my head but I absolutely love and adore art history! Please keep asking me about it!!!
