Actually it's crazy how 'not racist' Australians are seen considering a: how our country was formed and b: we invented the phrase 'boat people' for refugees. And put them on an island. To do slave labour 🤨

Apparently, if you like anime, you're not supposed to have opinions/feelings about things that affect your own life, or so I hear. Are anime viewers not people?
I love melting into fantasy when I need to, but sometimes, lesser privileged people can not escape the reality made by those who are, created for them, by typecasting every single person as the same person and punishing us, no matter how many episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen we consume. People are allowed to feel things. Likewise, some people are forced to as their country is a war zone ran as a right wing politicians playground.

If you want a window into just how dire politics are right now in the UK:
There are two primary candidates for the election coming up on the 4th. The first is the transparently-corrupt leader of a corrupt regime that has spent the last 14 years siphoning money out of the country into their own accounts and feeding into racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and more or less any form of bigotry to encourage people to vote for them out of sheer terror and/or hatred.
The other is a guy so sharply at odds with the entire history and function of his party that there are increasingly-credible conspiracy theories that he's actually a plant by the first guy to sabotage their opposition.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot since the debate is the fact that we are no longer having to choose a lesser of two evils. We now have a strong, vibrant, empathetic, and intelligent choice who will do her absolute best for us. The only way to have a president who you agree with 100% is to become president yourself. Her plan for the economy has been shown by economic experts to be far better for us than Trump’s economy. This was fact checked to be true. She is the candidate proven to support LGBTQ rights all her life. She is the candidate proven to support racial equality, she’s been fighting for it since she was a child. She is the candidate who grew up as a regular person. She is the candidate who cares about both Palestinians and Israelites (the citizens, not the corrupt government). She is the candidate who will push for a ceasefire. Let’s remember that she isn’t president right now. She doesn’t have any power unless there’s a tie to break in the Senate.
I truly believe that if we don’t see a real positive change in this country under Harris it will be because of Congress and Supreme Court pushback. And that is the worst case scenario with a Harris presidency. Nothing changes. What’s the worst case if Trump wins? A project 2025 dystopia. Best case? Increased racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, police brutality etc. The president serves as a role model beyond just their political power. If the commander in chief in a country says it’s okay to hate a certain group of people, the country is going to lay into that.

all of hozier's songs are about love, but i'm not entirely sure if it's the kind of love everyone seems to think it is. i think his love shines out in that he cares for the world and the people in it so much that it can only inspire anger and mourning at how things like capitalism, greed, colonialism, war, homophobia, and racism damage and corrupt them. it's almost like as he points out these deep systemic issues, he has to then turn to the light and praise the things that are good and beautiful as to not let the flame burn out. i think a lot of people may only know him for the high adulations of love presented in many of his ballads, and those are still wonderous, sure, but what interests me far more is his enduring love for the downtrodden and the marginalized, and how he uses language to try and lift them away from the things that oppress them.

Ok so now ive watched all the episodes of batman caped crusader
here are my thoughts (HUGE SPOILERS)
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
they said evil lesbian rights :D
Harley Quinn is straight up insane just off the bat she's her own unique brand of clown crazy without the even a whiff of the joker and im here for it
Ohmygod two-face's scars are disgusting its actually hard to look at that's a trigger warning yall huge Trypophobia warning (fear/reversion to holes in skin. NO BLOOD THO)
Actually the show is very bloodless but its still VERY violent they somehow managed to include a LOT of brutality without any gore, be aware of this.
The show is mostly about mundane corrupt gotham but also there are real ghosts and vampires giving it a just the right dose of comic book urban fantasy
Speaking of fantasy the racial and queer diversity for what is vaguely the 1950s america is a big fantasy but im also here for it. racism what? homophobia who? (basically there are a lot of POC, men and women, in positions of power and this is never questioned or brought up or pointed out. Also queer people can just go out for dates and engage in PDA without any issues).
batman regularly beats up cops :D
Anyways this show is not mindblowing, it's straightforward (except for the gays). The character designs are top notch, but the storytelling isnt revolutionary. what it IS is decent fresh batman stories. The fantasy 1950s is great because the lack of high tech means the power-levels of the villains and heroes feels very tangible and less unconscionable (sorry superman youre my favorite but its hard to comprehend the scale of destruction and power)
Nothing that is making me sit back and go "wow that was the best thing i experienced in my life" and more "that was really nice, it was exactly what I wanted. classic batman stories set in a fantasy version of a bygone era and new takes on the classic villains that feel well thought out"

again so sorry im still on gladiator 2 but i cant stop thinking abt it (derogatory). it shows exactly the type of surface level "progress" we made in the last 2 decades. literally gladiator but "woke" as conservatives think of it bc that racial diversity n inclusion of lgbt characters is entirely surface level n covers up existing racism, eurocebtrism n homophobia.
they try to show rome as a brutal imperialist force spanning 3 continents for exactly 10 minutes, and then forget about it. no more discussion of imperialism and its consequences on both colonized ppl n colonizers. the message is 'rome is an empire built upon the blood of enslaved n colonized ppl. it could b good tho. it could b a REPUBLIC built upon the blood of enslaved n colonized ppl #progress'.
they were characters who were explicitly mentioned to enjoy n seek out gay sex, but these characters were either not shown or the villains. the brothers were rly effeminate as well to show how theyre morally corrupt, as one does when they try to present men as decadent, corrupt and morally reprehensible.
not to mention the whitewashing of the brothers. he tried to push as many poc into the plot as he could but whitewashed the two emperors that were arab irl. insane. all the main characters of color in the movie, esp the ones played by black actors, were either currently or formerly enslaved. he tried to be as "inclusive" as he could, but failed to imagine a past in europe where the emperor is arab and black ppl r anything but enslaved? even tho that past did exist? what kind of progress is that?

I feel like, if Democrats want to win in places that AREN'T deep blue, if they want swing states and rural areas, they NEED to shut up about social issues. Don't talk about abortion or birth control or women's rights. Don't talk about police brutality and racism and immigration, legal or not. Don't talk about transphobia or homophobia. They should talk SOLELY about economic policy and solid legislation and sneak in protections for marginalized groups once elected.
Imma be real with you chief, since you came to my inbox and you presumably want my opinion: that is an absolutely terrible idea. Here's why:
First and most importantly, this is confusing "Democrats/progressives need to learn how to explain their policies in terms that are acceptable to the American mushy middle" with "they shouldn't talk about those policies at all." It's not that we can't pursue left-wing economic or social policies, it's that we should stop f'n calling them "socialist," which does nothing and causes a lot of harm among the people who instantly tune out or turn hostile the instant they hear that word and are unreachable afterward. If we CAN put them in terms that the American public likes, i.e. freedom, justice, opportunity, we should do that.
So... black people don't exist in America? LGBTQ people don't exist in America? Immigrants/racial minorities don't exist in America? Women (HALF THE ENTIRE POPULATION) don't exist in America? Especially when those are all core constituencies of the Democratic Party and vote for it precisely because it has openly expressed support for their issues and protection for their basic personal rights and civil liberties, especially as the right wing gets ever more reactionary, fascist, and crazy? You really think we should just throw up our hands and totally cede the public debate on these issues to the fascists, and act like any pushback or critique is the aberrant position??? Really???
Likewise, we're not gonna go for the "absolutely everyone in a red state/area is an unrepentant bigot who can only be mobilized if we discreetly tuck away our social liberalism." We're gonna talk about gerrymandering. We're going to talk about voter repression laws. We're gonna talk about how Ken Paxton, the Texas AG so wildly, insanely corrupt that he finally managed to get impeached by fellow Texas Republicans, boasted that if he didn't stop Texas counties from mailing out ballots to all registered voters, Biden would have won Texas. We're not going to act like there are Sensible Americans in Deep Blue Areas and everyone else is f'n David Duke of the KKK who needs to be appeased in hopes we can meekly trick them into supporting us. We're just not.
We're not gonna act like abortion or LGBTQ rights are shameful, unpopular, or minoritized views that have to be hidden or treated as secondary, especially when we're pummeling the Republicans, even and especially in deep red areas, precisely because of those things. Ordinary people in Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and all the other usual suspects are coming out to protest against drag bans and bathroom laws, not "superior" blue-area liberals. Republicans are backtracking on the abortion issue as fast as they can because it is so incredibly politically toxic and is costing them local/state/other competitive elections like crazy. 60% of the country supports abortion rights and 70%+ supports LGBTQ rights. The fascists are a minority and that is why they are so loud and so terrible: because they're shit-scared and they see the demographics coming to end them. We are not, again, acting like they're the majority or it's too shameful to speak about anything related to anything that's not the economy, especially since:
It won't work anyway! If people were actually, genuinely motivated by appeals to improved economic circumstances, they would already vote for Democrats! But they don't, because white supremacy and white grievance is too important for them! Even if the Democrats did try to rebrand themselves as solely focused on economic issues (which, for all the reasons stated above, would be insane), the people who don't vote for them now still wouldn't vote for them then! They will still vote for the Republicans, because a) they've been fed for decades on the myth of REPUBLICANS ARE BETTER FOR THE ECONOMY and b) they know that Republicans will punish non-white people, while Democrats won't. If they did try to "sneak in" protections for marginalized groups even once, and since that's, again, what they've built their entire party on, that would be it. It's the racism. It is always the racism.
Basically, this is the exact kind of mega-reductive "the only war is the class war"/"economic oppression is the only oppression" analysis that is so popular among Online Leftists and attempts to just erase racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, xenophobia, and all the other complex reasons why people vote, experience oppression, want the government to represent their interests, affiliate with a political party, or prioritize their particular identity/civic participation, because it's inconvenient for something something the purity of their Marxist theory. Besides, this is not even to mention that the Democrats' existing supporters would abandon them in droves, which would gut any remote increase in the number of voters that they could even (wildly unrealistically) hope to gain for doing it. You might as well be the f'n No Labels party, which is trying this exact kind of BS in hopes of peeling off just enough of the ideologically wavering Biden voters to hand the election to Trump. So. Yeah. No.

caped crusader's take on race largely confused me and i was also kinda confused by how homosexuality is seen in the universe. it felt very half-assed.
I agree! It's frustrating seeing superhero fandom brush away legitimate criticism with how gay couples are depicted in CC (notice how the person QRT-ing OP's tweet made up a whole new sentence to be mad at)- by saying "oh you just want to see marginalized characters suffer! This is superhero media, it's escapism!" (many of the QRTs to that person's post say this).
CC explicitly shows classicism and sexism (with like a pinch of racism) existing in their universe, but suddenly homophobia just magically doesn't exist and it's okay for two women of color to smooch in public? Systemic bigotry is connected. If sexism exists, then surely a sapphic couple would be a little worried about how they're perceived in this world.
It's more than fair to criticize CC's selective nature in depicting what kind of bigotry exists in their world. Classicism is discussed but they don't talk about how that intersects with race (by whitewashing Firebug), Hollywood beauty privilege exists but not how that intersects with race AND gender (ignoring Miss Francis as a WOC in tinsel town), police corruption and brutality is a thing but we're not going to talk about how the police violently target and oppress queer and people of color (especially Black people)- in fact! We'll just make the cops queer women of color. What a diversity win. At what point is this just erasure?
