"An international research team has found almost a million potential sources of antibiotics in the natural world.
Research published in the journal Cell by a team including Queensland University of Technology (QUT) computational biologist Associate Professor Luis Pedro Coelho has used machine learning to identify 863,498 promising antimicrobial peptides -- small molecules that can kill or inhibit the growth of infectious microbes.
The findings of the study come with a renewed global focus on combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as humanity contends with the growing number of superbugs resistant to current drugs.
"There is an urgent need for new methods for antibiotic discovery," Professor Coelho, a researcher at the QUT Centre for Microbiome Research, said. The centre studies the structure and function of microbial communities from around the globe.
"It is one of the top public health threats, killing 1.27 million people each year." ...
"Using artificial intelligence to understand and harness the power of the global microbiome will hopefully drive innovative research for better public health outcomes," he said.
The team verified the machine predictions by testing 100 laboratory-made peptides against clinically significant pathogens. They found 79 disrupted bacterial membranes and 63 specifically targeted antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
"Moreover, some peptides helped to eliminate infections in mice; two in particular reduced bacteria by up to four orders of magnitude," Professor Coelho said.
In a preclinical model, tested on infected mice, treatment with these peptides produced results similar to the effects of polymyxin B -- a commercially available antibiotic which is used to treat meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis and urinary tract infections.
More than 60,000 metagenomes (a collection of genomes within a specific environment), which together contained the genetic makeup of over one million organisms, were analysed to get these results. They came from sources across the globe including marine and soil environments, and human and animal guts.
The resulting AMPSphere -- a comprehensive database comprising these novel peptides -- has been published as a publicly available, open-access resource for new antibiotic discovery.

Assignment 3 Playtesting
This week we bought together all aspects of the game into one project for playtesting!!!
Overall, playtesters enjoyed the prototype, especially for its visuals and music. The most common pieces for improvement were for the map entities to be solod to disallow the player from simply walking through buildings, and sudden drops in the player's health (a bug so notorious among the team we began referring to it as ""The Phantom")
Playtesters generally felt like the objective arrows were spawning too quickly, not giving them enough time to explore the map and find items for themselves.
In conclusion, the playtests provided valuable insight into what the players want from the game and reminded the team that we may not be our target player and that for a play centric approach to game design we need to be open to feedback and criticism to further improve.

Asteroids Development Post
As I focused most of my attention on other prototypes I didn't get to develeop this project as far as I intended and only implemented basic mechanics such as score, enemy death, and damage.
I first created the basic scoring system and the objective that the player had to project the research station in the middle. Enemies and debri's spawn from the outside that all head toward the centre in which the player must destory otherwise the research station would break and the player would lose.
Issues:
No health mechanic
Needs more interesting gameplay
Needs more enemies
Upgrades and powerups
All of these issues should be addressed and implemented before the playtest of this prototype.
For this week I read chapter 5 of Fullerton's game design workshop to help me think about the processes of behaviours of objects to get an understanding of the impact they have to a game. "The more potential behaviours as object has, the less predictable its actions within the system." After doing my readings I started brainstorming ideas for different potential enemy behaviours that can make my game feel more unique and unpredictable.

Week 8: Outlaw Racer Development Progress
Development Progress of Outlaw Racer
This week, I focused on the development of the arcade racing game "Outlaw Racer." Below is a summary of the key progress and challenges encountered at this stage.

Achievements
Control Mechanism:
Implemented the function of vehicle control using arrow keys. Players can now smoothly drive the vehicle with the arrow keys.
The health system is operational, showing dynamic changes in the health bar without revealing specific values, adding to the game's tension.
Integration of Obstacles and Challenges:
Set up traffic cones and oil slicks as obstacles. Colliding with traffic cones slows down the vehicle and pushes it back, while driving over oil slicks causes the vehicle to spin, increasing the game's difficulty and fun.
Visual and Audio Enhancements:
Added sound effects and visual feedback for collecting coins and medical kits, enhancing player interaction. The instant feedback mechanism makes the game more enjoyable and satisfying.
Challenges
Vehicle Rotation Issue:
Encountered an issue with incorrect vehicle rotation angles when replacing tutorial assets.
Solution: Resolved the issue by limiting the angle deviation, ensuring the vehicle rotates correctly.
Damage Calculation Issue:
Found that consecutive collisions within a short time only deducted health once, instead of multiple times.
Solution: Realized the issue was due to misunderstanding the "damage cooldown" setting, initially thinking it was for setting health deduction for each collision. Adjusted the settings, and now the damage value is calculated correctly.
Temporary Improvements
During development, I referred to the importance of goal setting in game design discussed by Tracy Fullerton on page 68 of "Game Design Workshop," and the key factors designers need to consider when testing and tuning game systems on page 159. Reflecting on the challenge section of the elevator pitch, I felt the challenges were insufficient, so I made some improvements. According to Tracy Fullerton, "Goals provide direction and purpose for players. They define what players are trying to achieve within the rules of the game. Ideally, goals should be challenging yet achievable for players," and "When the system is internally complete and fair to all players, the designer must test if the game is fun and challenging." Therefore, I made the following improvements:
Collision Penalty Mechanism: If players collide with NPC vehicles, not only will they lose health, but they will also lose 1 point.
Increased Coin Rewards: The points for picking up a coin have been increased from 1 to 3.
The reason for these improvements is to prevent players from avoiding challenges in pursuit of high scores. Previously, I tried a conservative strategy in the game, avoiding risky coins to ensure survival time, but this made the game less challenging. After the improvements, since collisions result in a small point deduction while picking up coins offers higher rewards, players are driven to take risks for high rewards within limited health. This aligns with Fullerton's discussion on how goals affect the tone of the game because the core of this game is to get the highest score possible in a tense and exciting atmosphere.
Next Steps
With all core functions in place, the next step is to conduct game testing. I plan to invite some players for testing and provide feedback on game mechanics, difficulty balance, and overall experience. This feedback is crucial for identifying remaining issues and further improving the game. Reference:

your original game should be functional, internally complete, and balanced. - Fullerton (ch10, pg342)
Chapter 10 was especially useful to help me move forward with the experienced I gained from my platformer. I want to improve my prototypes to a level where I can get the most out of the playtesting experience. I want to be able to use all the four basic steps of game design (foundation, structure, formal details and refinement) for my first playtest of my asteroids game. Therefore I plan to start by focusing on making the core gameplay functional and engaging before adding enough structure to build out the rules and procedures. As I struggled with my time limit last time, I want to ensure all of my components are purposeful so I may refine my game to the best possible.
Week 6 - Asteroids Development 1 Progress
Modifying What I Had
By then end of the week 4 tutorial, I had a basic asteroids set up with a player character moving in the direction of the mouse that could shoot with left click. Asteroids were also spawning in various sizes and I had lives. When an asteroid of any size collides with the player they lose 1 health point. I immediately changed the player's movement as I wanted this game to be local PVP, to turning with 'a' and 'd' with thrust being applied with 'w' . I also added player 2 with the same movement using the arrow keys. To create the low gravity effect I wanted, I used the physics 2.0 behaviour on the players using the tutorial here: https://wiki.gdevelop.io/gdevelop5/tutorials/asteroids/ship_and_movement_controls/#moving-forward
I also used the tutorial to change the 'Game Over' screen to a Player 1 and Player 2 wins screen each that would be displayed when either player lost all of their lives.

Creating New Mechanics
To make the Kirby suction effect I had to get a bit creative. I started by creating new sprites which are hitboxes attached to the Players to detect if an asteroid is in their range. When the asteroids collide with this hitbox, if the players holds 's' if they're Player 1 or the down arrow if they are Player 2, the asteroid will be pulled towards them and become a bullet that they can shoot. To shoot the bullets Player 1 presses 'e' and Player 2 presses 'm'. Like the tutorial, the bullet can destroy asteroids but they can also deal 1 damage to the enemy player. Using this suction mechanic I also added food that floats around with the asteroids that the player can suck up using the mechanic from before. Each piece of food heals 1 health point. However, to ensure that the player could not exceed the maximum amount of lives they started with, I used min values instead of simply adding to my lives variable.

Platformer Progress & Playtests!
So I made lots of updates to my platformer, Bladequest, to add the melee combat system I wanted as well as some enemies to attack and kill. I am proud to say that after following the advanced melee combat tuturial (Wishforge Games, 2020), every other mechanic I added was done without following a tuturial.
GAME FEATURES & PROGRESS
The combat system I implemented had a 'combo' system in it, where pressing the attack button again after an attack would cause a different animation to be played for the next attack. This happens 3 times, but will reset back to the first animation if too much time passes, or the third animation is completed. While currently there is no mechanical difference in these attacks (except for hitbox positions), this system would easily allow for changes to specifc attack variables - such as damage, or more advanced hitboxes - in the future. The other main feature of the attack is a 'hitstun' mechanic, a feature which will interupt an enemies attack when they are hit. This was one of the more challenging things to implement, since the enemies would frequently stop functioning if the sequencing or conditions of the code weren't correct.
The other main feature implemented was the skeleton enemies for the game. These were coded to take damage if the player hit them 3 times with an attack, and to die and disapear after there death animation finished. The skeleton enemies also are able to turn to face the player when approached, and attack the player if they get in range. The attack currently can't hit or damage the player, because only the animation is coded in, but the hit system will be identical to the players system. The affirmentioned hitstun is also applied to these enemies, so that their attack animation can be interupted if the player hits them.

PLAYTESTS & FEEDBACK
So with a prototype completed, I could get people to playtest the game and give feedback on its current mechanics. This is a crucial part of the playcentric design process, and the earlier playtests can be done, the easier it is to change and update elements of your game (Fullerton, 2018). Here is the feedback I got from people on my game:
Pros:
The hitstun mechanic was impressive and made the game feel better
the attack combo was cool
Good choice of sprites for player and enemies
Cons:
Attacking while mid-air stopped all horizontal movement, which felt jarring for players
Lack of features such as player health and damage, levels, challenge, win/lose states
And some feedback of things to add was for a different attack to play if the player attacked while mid-air.
I was glad players enjoyed the mechanics that were featured in the game, and the way attacking works while mid-air is definitely something I would change in the future, ideally with the addition of specific arial attacks as suggested. Also more features and content to make the game actually feel like a game are features I would add next, but my time working on this project is finished. I might revisit it in the future, but for now I need to move on to making a different style of game; a top-down shoot-em-up. Expect a post-mortem on the platformer project soon.

 Assignment 3 Playtesting
Since Dylan has never played or heard about our game, he doesn't know how to do it. Zerend has to explain the controls and mechanics to him. Dylan tried everything to see if there were any bugs in the game. I found out that cards can keep pulling out of the deck. Also, the boss won't be able to die when its health hits zero.
Chris is playtesting; he mentions that he doesn't know how the cards work, decreasing the sword energy, and adding extra benefits if players are not doing anything. Maybe reduce the cost of the attack cards. He suggested a transaction; he would like to see more animation for the player going to another level or fighting the monster. He also doesn't need to focus on combat anymore.
After playtesting, we were discussing how to improve the game. For example, assigning how many cards should be in the player's hand. After reading the game book. according to Tracy Fullerton.(2018). "The structure you define for your team and the working environment you create will determine their ability to succeed." I like his said, everyone have their advantages and disadvantages. We separate our work and help each other when we got problem.

Game 2 dev post 2
One of the core inspiration for this game is horde survival games such as COD zombies and vampire survivor plus others like them. In these sorts of games, the objective is to survive as long as possible against an infinite horde of zombies or monsters. The difference between these games and the standard asteroid shoot-em-ups is the behaviors' of enemies in regards to the player.

In asteroids, there is no enemy behavior and all asteroid movements are in a random direction with no deviation once set on the specific path. In a horde based game, there is differences in regards to the how enemies may behave in regards to the player which mostly mean the enemies tracking the player movement and following after them.
In my game, I wish to have multiple different types of enemies, each with differing behavior patterns,
for example One:
an enemy could have standard asteroid behavior and split into smaller chunks once hit,
one type of enemy could chase after the player
one type could send some small bullets in the proximity of the player
I will only add the first two enemy types as this is still a rough prototype that I am working on at the moment.
Something that needs to be addressed about the game is the balancing of the game mechanics. A point that Fullerton goes into around chapter 10 is the balancing of the variables within a game in order to provide a fair experience so that the player isn't cheated. Afterall, what fun is there in playing an unfair game. In the prototype and possibly in the main game, there will be few ways in to adjust the balancing. Currently the ways that I can adjust for game balance is:
enemy spawn speed
player and enemy movement speed
fire rate and speed of movement for the bullets
Though these seem minor at first, together they can impact the balance of the game in a major way. Currently they will be set to what can only be described as an average setting for all. but this still allows me to tweak these variables at any time to get a better feel of the game.

Have you heard of the mushroom being used to boost the immune system and fight cancer? The research, coming from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), focuses on a compound known as polysaccharopeptide (PSP), which is found in the turkey tail mushroom. For the study, two groups of mice were used, one of which was fed PSP for 20 weeks. What Dr. ling found was that mice fed the PSP over the 20 weeks did not develop any prostate tumors, whereas the group of mice not fed PSP did develop tumors.
Dr Ling, from the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre-Queensland and Institute for Biomedical Health & Innovation at QUT had this to say:
“The findings are quite significant. What we wanted to demonstrate was whether that compound could stop the development of prostate tumours in the first place. In the past, other inhibitors tested in research trials have been shown to be up to 70 per cent effective, but we’re seeing 100 per cent of this tumour prevented from developing with PSP. Importantly, we did not see any side effects from the treatment.” 
While Lings research shows the potential for polysaccharopeptide to completely inhibit prostate tumor formation, he does note that his research doesn’t suggest that simply eating the mushrooms would have the same benefit.
Pungent ginger compound puts immune cells on heightened alert

Ginger has a reputation for stimulating the immune system. New results from the Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich now support this thesis. In laboratory tests, small amounts of a pungent ginger constituent put white blood cells on heightened alert. The study also shows that this process involves a type of receptor that plays a role in the perception of painful heat stimuli and the sensation of spiciness in food.
Even though ginger consumption has increased, the question arises as to whether normal consumption levels are sufficient to achieve health effects. And if so, which compounds and molecular mechanisms play a role in this.
As the study shows, significant amounts of pungent ginger compounds enter the blood about 30 to 60 minutes after consuming one liter of ginger tea. By far the highest levels were achieved by [6]-gingerol, with plasma concentrations of approximately 7 to 17 micrograms per liter.
The pungent compound is known to exert its "taste" effect via the so-called TRPV1 receptor, an ion channel located on the surface of nerve cells that responds to painful heat stimuli as well as to pungent compounds from chili and ginger. Since some studies suggest that white blood cells also possess this receptor, the research team tested whether [6]-gingerol influences the activity of these immune cells.
Further laboratory experiments by the research group also showed that even a very low concentration of almost 15 micrograms of [6]-gingerol per liter is sufficient to put the cells on heightened alert.
Thus, compared to control cells, the stimulated cells reacted about 30 percent more strongly to a peptide that simulates a bacterial infection. Addition of a TRPV1 receptor-specific inhibitor reversed the effect induced by [6]-gingerol.
"Thus, at least in experiments, very low [6]-gingerol concentrations are sufficient to affect the activity of immune cells via the TRPV1 receptor. In blood, these concentrations could theoretically be achieved by consuming about one liter of ginger tea," says Gaby Andersen.
Time of day may determine the amount of fat burned by exercise

Physical activity at the right time of the day seems able to increase fat metabolism, at least in mice. A new study from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark shows that mice that did exercise in an early active phase, which corresponds to morning exercise in humans, increased their metabolism more than mice that did exercise at a time when they usually rest. The results are published in the journal PNAS.
Physical activity at different times of the day can affect the body in different ways since the biological processes depend on the circadian rhythms of the cells. To ascertain how the time of day at which exercise is done affects the burning of fat, researchers at Karolinska Institutet and the University of Copenhagen studied the adipose tissue of mice after a session of high-intensity exercise performed at two points of the daily cycle, an early active phase and early rest phase (corresponding to a late morning and late evening session, respectively, in humans). The researchers studied various markers for fat metabolism and analyzed which genes were active in adipose tissue after exercise.
The researchers found that physical activity at an early active phase increased the expression of genes involved in the breakdown of adipose tissue, thermogenesis (heat production) and mitochondria in the adipose tissue, indicating a higher metabolic rate. These effects were observed only in mice that exercised in the early active phase and were independent of food intake.
"Our results suggest that late morning exercise could be more effective than late evening exercise in terms of boosting the metabolism and the burning of fat, and if this is the case, they could prove of value to people who are overweight," says Professor Juleen R. Zierath from the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery and the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet.

Outlaw Racer - Design Concept and Knowledge Application
In the game design of "Outlaw Racer," I incorporated the importance of Challenge, Rewards, and Multiplayer mentioned in the Week 7 lecture and referenced the discussions in Chapters 4 and 5 of Fullerton's "Game Design Workshop."
Firstly, the challenge levels in the game design are divided into three tiers:
Micro-level Challenges: Players need to avoid traffic cones and oil spills on busy streets. These challenges test the player's reaction speed and precise control abilities. Meso-level Challenges: Players must avoid traffic of varying speeds while collecting coins to achieve higher scores. Macro-level Challenges: Players need to maintain sufficient health throughout the game to ensure they can continue playing after collisions.
This multi-tiered challenge design not only adds depth and fun to the game but also provides players with a sense of accomplishment on different levels.
In the dynamic system design of the game, I introduced constantly changing traffic conditions and randomly appearing obstacles, making each gaming experience unique and unpredictable. This design not only increases the replay value of the game but also stimulates the player's ongoing interest.
Additionally, I plan to implement various reward mechanisms to motivate players:
Honor Rewards: By displaying historical high scores, players are encouraged to continually challenge themselves and strive for higher scores. Sustenance Rewards: Players can increase their health by collecting medical kits, helping them progress further in the game. Artistic Rewards: The game features different streets and environments, allowing players to unlock new scenes and resources.
This multi-tiered reward system, combined with instant feedback (such as sound effects and visual effects), greatly enhances player interactivity, satisfaction, and user retention. Reference:

A gigantic fleet of floating rocks, spewed up from an underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean, floated across the waves for thousands of miles. Eventually, it made it all the way to Australia, then started on a new project: revitalising the world’s largest (and very threatened) coral reef system.
This unlikely chain of events may sound somewhat incredible, but it’s an entirely true story – one that has played out dramatically over the last year, while highlighting the surprising, largely unseen ways in which Earth’s natural environmental systems intersect with one another.
Stranger still, it’s not the first time this has happened. An eruption in 2001 from the same submarine seamount – a nameless volcano, simply dubbed Volcano F or 0403-091, located near the Vavaʻu islands in Tonga – produced a similar rocky flotilla, which also voyaged on the currents to Australia over the space of a year.
When this phenomenon occurs, it creates what’s called a pumice raft – a floating platform composed of countless chunks of buoyant and highly porous volcanic rock.

Each one of these small rocks attracts marine organisms, including algae, barnacles, corals, and more. These tiny travellers end up hitching a ride across the ocean, and they can help seed and replenish endangered coral systems at their ultimate destination: for many, the Great Barrier Reef.
“Each piece of pumice has its own little community that has been transported across the world’s oceans – and we have had trillions of pieces of this pumice floating out there following the eruption,” says geologist Scott Bryan from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.
“Each piece of pumice is a home, and a vehicle for an organism, and it’s just tremendous. The sheer numbers of individuals and this diversity of species is being transported thousands of kilometres in only a matter of months is really quite phenomenal.”
Bryan knows a thing or two about these pumice migrations. He’s been studying the volcanic rafts for 20 years, investigating the 2001 eruption, its 2019 successor (which started washing up on Australian shores in April), and other underwater eruptions as well.
His most recent study, published last month, examined the 2012 eruption of the Havre Seamount, also in the South Pacific – estimated to be the largest underwater volcano eruption ever recorded, broadly equivalent to the most powerful volcanic eruption on land in the 20th century.
That event produced a gigantic raft of pumice rock that ended up dispersing over an area twice the size of New Zealand – in addition to littering the seafloor with giant chunks of pumice the size of vans.

“We don’t understand why some pumice sinks during the eruption at the location and others can float for many months and years on the world’s oceans,” Bryan says, but further analysis could fill in the gaps.
“This will help us understand the mechanisms and dynamics of these explosive eruptions and understand better why these eruptions produce potentially hazardous pumice rafts.”
Potentially hazardous is right. Last year’s eruption from Volcano F produced some stunning video of what it looks like to sail into these gargantuan rafts, which resemble giant oil slicks, only made of up undulating rocks that seem to go on forever.
These surreal, floating formations aren’t inherently dangerous by themselves, but they could have the potential to damage boats, and can smother coastlines in some circumstances, as another video from this year attests.
For now, though, researchers are hopeful Volcano F’s latest delivery will do some good for the Great Barrier Reef off Australia’s coastline, which is besieged by coral bleaching as the world’s oceans heat up due to climate change.
While the organisms carried on the flotilla of rock can help replenish reef ecosystems, scientists are eager to emphasise they are not a silver bullet.

“Pumice rafts alone won’t help mitigate directly the effects of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef,” Bryan says.
“This is about a boost of new recruits, of new corals and other reef-building organisms, that happens every five years or so. It’s almost like a vitamin shot for the Great Barrier Reef.”
And possibly much further afield too. The 2019 pumice raft – which a year ago measured approximately 20,000 football fields in size – can now be found all the way along the Australian east coast from Townsville in Queensland’s north to northern New South Wales: spreading out over more than 1,300 kilometres of coastline.
It’s a massive dispersion, stemming from a single event far beyond the horizon, and one which serves to remind us of the links between what perhaps only seem like disparate marine ecosystems.
“This shows that the Great Barrier Reef has connections to coral reefs that are thousands of kilometres further east,” Bryan says.
“In terms of the health of the Great Barrier Reef, it’s also important that these distant reefs are taken care of.”

As for Volcano F, it’s been raising its profile in recent years, and in more ways than one. The ongoing eruptions aren’t just attracting attention from scientists – they’re also changing and building up the underwater landscape around the volcano.
Bryan was part of an expedition team that surveyed the site this year, collecting samples and observing what the volcano looks like underneath the waves.
“It’s a volcano that’s getting close to breaching the surface and will become an island in years to come,” Bryan says.
We’ve seen what that can look like in other parts of the world, and it makes for a pretty amazing spectacle: instead of gigantic volcanic rafts, entire pop-up islands emerge out of the ocean.
Volcano F was already a great story, but it looks like the next chapter may be even more incredible.
