George Harding:
-UK-based artist
-focusing on his mental health struggles and recovery.
-“celebrating and transcending these difficulties and differences through creativity”.
-showing off his flaws, depicting vulnerability and struggle through his artworks.
-creating art is like therapy for him, bringing his thoughts and emotions on canvas which can result in chaoticism, high contrasting colours and abstract portraiture.
Examplar of his works:
Smiling, shining and neurons firing (say yes).
- dives into the depths of the human mind, showcasing the immense power of creativity, and embracing inspiration that brings so much joy and completely shifts our perspective.

For my health by Alana Heaton, 2023
Sculptural work was created from empty medication wrappers and a container. The words “for my health” were written in black marker to symbolise a medication container. With the wrappers leaking out of the container, the artwork asks the audience how much is too much?? I feel exposed and vulnerable to the public as people can see what I take on a daily basis.

Susan Aldworth:
-background in psychology and the human mind.
-likes to explore the connection between the brain and our sense of self through her practice.
-Her artworks are held in prestigious collections like the V&A and the British Museum.
-collaborating with organisations like the Parkinson's Society Brain Bank.
Example of her art:
-Passing Thoughts.
- 15 prints of brain tissue matter
-unaltered photographs are described as “authentic, strange and beautiful pictures of a human brain”
Notes:
Some psychologists and medical health professionals believe that mental health issues are caused by a lack of hormones going to the brain and the brain developing differently from other people when they were younger. Someone with ADHD or something like depression might have a different-looking brain pattern to someone without those issues, and that is what Aldworth wanted to show off through Passing thoughts. Showing off the brain impacts on a person's psychology.

Dear Alana by Alana Heaton, 2023
Mixed media installation consisting of bday cards, a scrunched up quote on paper, and a projection of the time based media artwork “grief” (by Alana Heaton)
It is interactive.
It is a self reflection of grief and lossing people you love. I just relatively lost my grandad and want to reflect on this and what people have said to me at that time.

Giselle Stanborough:
-Australian-based intermedia artist
-exploring the idea of social activities by large corporations and how we interact with social media and dating apps
Examplar of one of her works:
-Lozein: Find the Lover that You Deserve (1.4), a time-based media piece.
-“a Ted Talks style tragedy addressing the hubris of a humanity that expects technology to resolve the discomfort of our existential loneliness, something that may itself be the fundamental defining characteristic of the human condition: the failed promises of language to provide meaningful access to another consciousness” (MCA).
Notes:
Society relies heavily on technology and digital software to survive. We are constantly addicted to social media and our phones, which make us antonymous to communicating properly in person. This causes our mental well-being to decline and sets high standards for human interaction.

Self ashamed by Alana Heaton, 2023
A mixed-media piece about my own personal struggles with body dysmorphia. It is an abstract self-portrait of me surrounded by critical and negative words I say in my mind daily. It like I'm standing in a mirror saying these words to myself. “Fuck I'm ugly”, “whale”, and “I'm fat” is a few of the negative things I have said.
I got picked on by family members and classmates about the way I look. When I met someone that cared for me and finds me attractive I asked the question “why do you love me” (like painted on the canvas).

-time-based media artwork that consists of a mix of self-portraits and videos of me talking about my grief.
-Grief is “the natural emotional response to the loss of someone close” -healthdirect
-I wanted to express how I felt when someone I loved left me forever and the feeling of an empty hole in my heart.
-monochrome tone helps to capture this certain time in my life as it shows my sadness
-Black and white are also found in vintage film cameras; these film cameras are traditionally a symbolist icon of a memory.
-it’s like a therapy session. Talking about my feelings and what is going on.

On prescription by Alaan Heaton, 2023
Apart of a series of 3 photographs
Shows off pain killers, and prescribed medicine. Drawing the line between what should be taken and not. Looking like it’s went over that line to try to feel relaxed and numb. This can be serious and even deadly.

-What if you list out your true thoughts and feelings that are going through your head daily?
-Showing off what it’s like in an anxiety-driven mind, overthinking everything.
-all the thoughts in my head in an eight-and-a-half-minute video like a diary entry or a blog.
- I wanted to type it out and show it off in a screen recording.
-It is quiet but loud at the same time as I’m physically not speaking but the typography mostly has capital letters which can be perceived as screaming.

No entry by Alana Heaton, 2023
When having mental health issues like anxiety and depression you feel like not talking to anyone, not asking help and just hiding your feeling down in the back of your mind. You say “you’re fine” but really you’re not. You just say that to make everyone else happy. You try to people please and help everyone else apart from yourself. Your thought is to help everyone else before yourself and that’s what’s happen when you have mental health issues.
No entry is a comment on that, locking those feelings deep down so no one see them and your true self.
