Hi, you’ve mentioned trying to navigate the overlap between leather culture and tzinut and I’m interested in hearing more about leather and Judaism if you’re comfortable sharing 😊

yeah! in judaism leather is indicative of luxury and comfort—this is why we don't wear it on yom kippur (also prohibited is sex, so to me this feels like a pretty big arrow pointing to leathersex bc leather and sex are linked by being in this list of things we refrain from on yom kippur). more than that, though, some of the holiest things we have in judaism are leather! kosher klafs (scrolls) are a type of leather (tanned hide and all that) which includes the torah, what's in the mezuzah, and the scrolls in tefilin! and speaking of tefilin—black leather straps we bind ourselves with! more than that, traditionally the way to keep the leather moisturized and nice is to lay tefilin regularly and allow the oils from your skin to hydrate the leather. there's also ritualized leather care if it's damaged, you have like black dye and you say a little bracha before you use it to repair your tefilin

judaism imbues leather items with a sense of holiness, set-apart-ness that is similar to the more spiritual side of the leather community. leather spirituality often views leather as a material that it's important for helping us reach an altered state of mind, another 'self' if you want to put it that way. leathers have their own lives and they are treated with immense respect and reverence. for example, touching someone else's gear without permission is a HUGE no-no, it's a sign of disrespect to an extremely high degree. (this is why bootblacks are such an important and fascinating social role within the leather community; often they are the only person who will touch and handle a person's leather gear other than the leather's owner themself. to give your vest or harness or boots or whatever to a bootblack and walk away is such a huge action of trust, and as such bootblacks generally have a highly respected role in the community (i'd imagine kinda like book binders in communities who love really old books). see again the ritualized leather care with tefilin!)

in terms of tznius and leather, a lot of my studies (highly recommended the book reclaiming dignity, it's a really good collection of writings on what tznius actually means and how to teach it in a way that doesn't traumatize and disrespect women and girls (warning theres like two just random homophobic paragraphs in there??? but overall i still recommend)) discuss tznius as "fittingness" or "appropriateness" of what you're wearing for the situation you're in (when talking in terms of clothing at all). so it's tzanua to be naked in the shower bc that's what's appropriate for that moment. this is something i've been chewing on and batting around my brain in relation to what i wear when i go to pet moshes or leather bars. there is a certain aesthetic that comes with these spaces—only wearing a harness or an open leather vest and allowing your chest and stomach hair to be shown is a very common and appropriate thing to wear, for example. using the definition of tznius posed above, one may even call it tzanua!

ouu she would def secretly love the exhilaration & thrill of being watched by a creepy stalker, but i don’t think it ever really crosses her mind that she might be being watched (she always wants to believe the best in people, that everyone else is as well-intentioned & kindhearted as she is) + that’s part of the reason why peter feels so protective over his clueless butterfly<3

peter was also wayyy more secretive & less intentional in the beginning, but as he gets more comfortable with what he’s doing + once he becomes more familiar with what you would / wouldn’t notice i can def see him webbing things for butterfly to find in her room (maybe her lip gloss she thought she’d lost or a small lil bunch of flowers) or webbing a little message for her (like the msg he left on the bridge in tasm2 🤭) just so she knows someone is watching out for her<3

he likes to leave little clues all around for her but it’s a gradual escalation of him spiraling further into his obsession for sure🙂‍↕️!!!

HI AID!! Your post about Sylvie’s full name had me thinking… Zhongli knew Sylvie when they were going by Sylvatica, right? does Zhongli ever call her Sylvatica now, in the present day?

he did, but honestly they kinda nuked that early on. it only took a few months of going by that for them to kinda feel soured towards the name, since they didn't like how it sounded after someone called them sylvie as a nickname--they ended up taking that on instead

and they let him know early on to call them that instead

the only time he'd use it is to (playfully) jab at them, just like how they'd call him rex lapis, since otherwise they rlly don't like it used in any serious scenario. he only ever uses sylvie or foras for them (the latter only in more intimate situations of knowing their real, old name)

oh oh, funny you mention vacation, because as of lately I have been thinking about going abroad on vacation with kazutora and specifically, in greece.

it isn't as random as you might think as I have been in greece with university on a trip and I do tresure the trip a whole lot; see this man being forced to hike up the acropolis while I blabber about history ad shit and he's all like 'yeah yeah'.

BUT, you know what is there that'd make it worth it: cats.

they are very common near monuments or all around so I'd be blabbering while kazutora is befriending all the stray cats and trying to convince me to put one in the bag to bring back with us.

but aside this, I think that we'd also enjoy the beach a whole lot (see me reapplying every three hours sunscreen on kazutora because he looks like the type that burns relatively easily and he's all annoyed till he gets kisses and I lightly tease him with an extra massage).

we enjoy the beach till sundawn and then you know that sweet sweet sensation of tiredness that hits you when you stayed at the beach? that's us literally staying inside of the hotel, maybe not even leaving for dinner just basking in comfort and ease as we cuddle and maybe watch something and plan the following day, just squeezing each other and giggling.

Lamarr's greatest strength has always been her talent for anything showbiz — her love is in the performance arts, making ample use of her voice and theatrical attitude. Aya's talent is in the science. She had always wanted to be a mycologist, and has discovered and created many different species. After the end of her last relationship, it's no wonder she's out of practice.

Contrary to popular belief, Bibi doesn't really like to talk about talent. Anything she's good at has been hard-won with work, effort and fighting spirit. Having that said, she's a jack of all trades, and hates putting effort towards something she knows she's not immediately good at. What she does best lies in thievery and piracy, conning others through her charms and well-crafted scams.

Mari has similar talents to Lamarr, but has doubled down on the theatrics. As an ex-pop star, she knows how to charm the masses, sing her way into their hearts, and break them. She wouldn't dare to manipulate people the way Lamarr or Bibi would though, even throughout and after her fall from grace.

Alexis is the worst of them all — while full of talent and potential, he knows nothing better than the scents and sounds of cold-blooded murder. She looks for violence first and foremost, and will stop at nothing to acquire her next meal.

Jesse doesn't like talking about what he's good at — all he wants is to do honest work, and to do right by his friends and family. Like with all other sirens, he is a talented singer, but like few others he also plays an instrument: the acoustic guitar. He will often sit on the farm and serenade the unicorns when he knows for sure that there will be no unwanted visitors as a result.

Milana/Zevran: Zev knows Mila loves the pet names he gives her even if she acts like she doesn't 🙄 lmao. 'My Dear Warden', 'lovely', 'beautiful', 'My Sunshine' and 'My love' in his Antivan tongue, etc etc. She does outwardly warm up to his antics over time. She even starts warming up to calling him her love, too, as she grows more comfortable in expressing herself. He doesn't live it down when he first read those words from their correspondence when they were apart though. 😋

Beau/Fenris: Beau is quick and forward with her affection so tbh she loves calling Fenris pet names even if he may not be as expressive back. Nor does she mind if he doesn't. 'Grumps' when she feels exceptionally playful and 'darling' is the more common one.

She did have nicknames for Merrill and Anders, too, during her little situationships with them. 'Sweets' for Merrill and Varric's nickname 'blondie' also stuck for her teehee.

Juleic/Dorian: These two are very affectionate with their pet names!! Biggest saps out of the group of my DA ships!!! Amatus!! Beloved!! My love! Handsome! etc etc! They make me SICKKKKK 🫶

Armas/Lucanis: I know Armas is def keen to pet names just a matter of what... I'm not sure yet :3c and it will have to wait and see for the game to come out as I explore their dynamic!

midnight alley is an AMAZING setting; it feels lived in and like. an actual city. there are people being friends and people being supported and it does remind me of The City That Never Sleeps. it's wonderful.

also i like to scroll through comments while watching episodes too and seeing all the theories on Jane Colson– my favorite personally is that it's a young Jancy (Jan. What’s your motivation for helping people? Is it to make people like you? Is it because you just enjoy it? Is it because you need to fix everything? Is it because you think it’s your moral obligation? Stuff like that. It doesn’t actually have to be one of the ones I listed of course. Those are just some examples. It can also be multiple if you feel like it.

At first it was just because I went along with Sonic. With him taking me around and teaching me about justice and stuff, of course, I picked up some of his morals and goals. I also felt the need to pay him back for... taking care of me. Helping him with hero stuff was one of them.

But also, you get a lot of gratitude from those you save! It makes me feel so warm and fuzzy when they display their thanks!

I guess... it's also... to reassure myself. That I'm proving everyone back at my village wrong. That I won't cause destruction. I'll help- and I'll subvert all of their expectations. I know I shouldn't dwell at that any longer... but some part of me still does.

but yeah what i see from tarts favored jobs fighting style, warrior and samurai (and formerly reaper), is that deliberateness. with warriors heavy axe swings and samurais iaijutsu, you gotta commit to those big swings. and to the opponents your next move is perfectly visible, but so what if you hit big and hard enough that their defenses dont matter lol. while for reaper i think it was tart doing the scythe swings while the voidsent did all the magic stuff. which is why she gave it up when the voidsent went home. but the part where you get possessed by your voidsent and become a shadow monster is very like tart bc its so showy

bc thats the other thing with tart lmao, its all about showing off! being the most dangerous looking guy on the field so that she gets attacked by everyone else! because 1) being in a fight rules, being the guy everyones trying to beat up rules harder, 2) pain is great stimulation, 3) attention whore. most important reason tbh. i think if you could have tart as a trust npc her battle lines will be "eyes on me!/look here!" and itll be loud and annoying like YEAH IM LOOKIN GODDAMN SHUT UP ALREADY. but i still want her to annoy me >:3
