read often. what is it you want to write? if you're on my blog, fanfiction is a pretty good bet, so read it too! read with the mindset of a writer, sometimes its helpful to step back and think about why you're enjoying/not enjoying what you are reading. do you like the way they write vivid descriptions? do you like how natural their dialogue sounds? absorbing different writing styles is key when establishing your own writing style! you don't have to copy others, but taking inspiration from other works and putting your own spin on it is what transformative works are all about!

always, always re-read your work. read the dialogue out loud to make sure it sounds natural. take a step back to map out the scene in your head so it doesn't feel awkward. make sure there aren't any spelling or grammar mistakes that slipped past your first draft. you might not notice when you're in the middle of writing, but your readers will.

don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! have a unique idea unlike anything you've written before? try! even if it doesn't turn out how you hoped, you still wrote it! isn't that cool? you'll never be able to improve if you stick to what is safe, so try new things.

I made Fiend and Airhead as almost polar opposites, and this goes back into their backstories.

When I say that Airhead knows of love, I mean that since a young age he was showered with it by his mother. He's a beautiful boy, it's only natural he gets attention, right? And he should be grateful, shouldn't he? He should always be someone who makes people feel happy, and sometimes that means getting hurt first.

This culminated into who Airhead is now. He's willing to bear the burden of being "loved" because that's what's right. This is also why he tends to take on the role of the protector for others. But, the moments where he doesn't have to protect others, the moments where he encouraged to indulge in himself for once are really indicators that you're unlocking a more intimate and deeper relationship with him. That's not to say he doesn't like doing things for others! He loves to, but just once in a while being taken care of is nice. I can go on and on, but I'll stop here, this is already long.

Then there's Fiend. Take Airhead's backstory and turn it around. He was born in a very tumultuous and isolated household, unwanted and scorned for being his mother's child. Despite his parents' awful treatment of him, he still loved them and craved nothing short of their approval. And they knew. They knew he'd do anything for a lackluster "good job" or a half-hearted headpat, so they made sure to take advantage of this fact to keep him obedient and working.

Their eventual abandonment—in which they promised to do something together of his choosing for once—really opened his eyes and made him see that his parents, and by proxy those who should be closest to him, don't care for him. This and the experiences at the orphanage built him into a fiercely independent, bitter person who uses his brash personality to avoid making close connections with others out of fear of becoming too attached and used like before. He's much more calculating and cynical compared to Airhead, and most of his relationships stem from the benefits he can reap with his status around school.

That's why, as an LI, he'd be very hard to romance because he's really closed off. He'll have a hard time believing anything you do for him is genuine, and he'll be suspicious if you don't ask for anything in exchange. He's far more comfortable with sexual or fwb relationships, but there's an emptiness inside knowing that, for him at least, he likely may never be able to find someone where he can love, be it platonically or romantically. He's surrounded by people, but yet so alone. If you treat him kindly, care for him as an actual person, and stick with him despite being (as he believes) a shitty person, he will cry.
