write often. a lot of people say to write something every day, but i can understand if a busy schedule and/or lack of motivation gets in the way of that. but! writing is a skill, and that skill needs to be warmed up sometimes!! if it's been a while since you've written anything, then practice by just writing some snippets of dialogue, descriptions of locations, quick little scenes to get back into the groove of it. it really helps to kick your writing brain back into gear!

read often. what is it you want to write? if you're on my blog, fanfiction is a pretty good bet, so read it too! read with the mindset of a writer, sometimes its helpful to step back and think about why you're enjoying/not enjoying what you are reading. do you like the way they write vivid descriptions? do you like how natural their dialogue sounds? absorbing different writing styles is key when establishing your own writing style! you don't have to copy others, but taking inspiration from other works and putting your own spin on it is what transformative works are all about!

always, always re-read your work. read the dialogue out loud to make sure it sounds natural. take a step back to map out the scene in your head so it doesn't feel awkward. make sure there aren't any spelling or grammar mistakes that slipped past your first draft. you might not notice when you're in the middle of writing, but your readers will.

don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! have a unique idea unlike anything you've written before? try! even if it doesn't turn out how you hoped, you still wrote it! isn't that cool? you'll never be able to improve if you stick to what is safe, so try new things.

to be a good writer you have to be a terrible writer first. this was something i had to learn. nobody starts out an amazing wordsmith, that is something that takes skill and dedication. you will write terribly written things in the beginning. you might look back on your old work and cringe, but don't let that stop you. just keep going. keep writing. keep improving.
