Rough Pages by Lev AC Rosen

This is the third terrific book featuring detective Evander “Andy” Mills, a gay PI in 1950s San Francisco. Andy is drawn into the world of queer pulp fiction, books that were legal to print but illegal to send through the US mail. A pair of local gay bookstore owners were doing just that—shipping books to a network of readers desperate for a glimpse of others like them—and now they've disappeared. Their entire client list, including Andy’s boyfriend Gene, is at risk unless Andy can find the missing booksellers, or at least their address book, before the government or the Mafia does.

Rosen’s historical research continues to shine, shedding light on a fascinating variety of queer people and how they lived their lives. A number of characters return from previous books as relationships evolve and deepen. Andy himself continues to grow, dodging his former police colleagues while trying to figure out his role as a gay PI.

Like the other Evander Mills books, Rough Pages is shot through with a kind of bittersweet optimism. Rosen chillingly conveys the perpetual cloud of fear and danger that queer people lived under, but he balances it with the joy of community and of being your true self among people who understand you. Though some of it feels depressingly familiar, it’s inspiring to know that people fought through it then and will do so again.

There is something about proudly proclaiming a show "tumblrista catnip" that makes me emotional.

Something about how for years tumblrinas were ridiculed by show creators.

Something about Supernatural having a meta episode set at a convention with all the weirdo fans that made the main characters uncomfortable. Something something about Becky and the message that fangirls are gross and obsessive.

Something about Sherlock and the way fans were portrayed as crazy obsessive nutjobs for trying to figure out how he faked his death.

Something about creators mocking fandoms, dismissing them as freaks. Something about queer people not being welcome to engage in their creations because "why do you have to make everything gay?"

Something about the malicious culture of queerbaiting throughout the 2000s/2010s, followed by Bury Your Gays tropes across the media landscape because hell, you should be grateful we even gave you queer characters to begin with - and everyone dies in our show! You ain't special!

Something about Destiel questions being banned from conventions...

And then...

Something instead about Good Omens, and letting the story adapt naturally, embracing the fanbase and leaning into the fanservice.

Something about Our Flag Means Death, and the genuine outpouring of love and affection between cast, crew, and fandom that culminated in an explosion of fanworks that were never once mocked or deemed gross or wrong.

Something about Sandman, and staunchly digging in their heels on the queerness of it all, refusing to give in to the homophobes and instead avidly mocking THEM on social media rather than us.

Something about the writers hearing about fandoms favourite ships and excitedly stating that YES! We DID lean into that because it happened naturally and made sense.

Something about a firefighter coming out as bisexual after 7 seasons...

So yeah, something about a new high quality show made FOR US. By creators that love US. Respect US, and WANT our love.

Something about US FINALLY being a target audience for the best shows being made on TV now.

Tumblrista catnip. Creators saying "we made this for you. You are important. Your voices have been heard."

It just... all got a bit overwhelming for a moment there.

No Context Reasons You Should Watch Dead Boy Detectives

Hi queer fans of queer stuff! How are we feeling with today's TV industry? How about really bloody angry?

Look, the recent cancelation of Dead Boy Detectives is obviously personal for its fandom, but it's also one more nail in the coffin and I think we have to start doing something about it together.

I went through this with Sense8. With Our Flag Means Death. With smaller but also amazing shows like The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself. Not to mention when it's not cancelled yet but it's boycotted with seasons cut in half or zero marketing. *I am tired*.

If you are too, I ask you to join the campaign. This is specifically about increasing views and attention, not because Netflix is necessarily going to change their minds (we know that's unlikely), but because we want to prove that we exist as a group.

So even if you don't feel like actually watching right now, we ask you to give it a stream if you have a Netflix account, with headphones connected or low volume. If you don't have a Netflix account, and honestly good for you, you can help by boosting us in social media.

I do recommend Dead Boy Detectives for real, it's REALLY good, but this is more about joining forces. They want numbers, so we give them numbers in the most petty way: after they cancelled so that other networks will get interested. At the very least, the crew and creators might get some royalties and they deserve it after busting their asses for years to give us this season.

TL;DR: stream dead boy detectives as a community to shove it in their faces

The way the actors' and showrunner's faces fell and froze when the interviewer called Edwin and Charles a gay/straight friendship continues to bolster my trust.

But also, that was just an accurate bisexual experience.

I'm very grateful to George Rextrew for stating multiple times in interviews that gay characters are quickly over-sexualized, and he keeps bringing the focus back to the tender romance, youthful crush, and deep friendship between men. He's really trying to help expand the narrative of male relationships in how he presents Edwin on stage and in the press.

Jayden Revri and Steve Yockey have echoed and supported this spirit. I point to George here just because he receives the brunt of the gay rep questions right now.

Also, as ever, much love to Neil Gaiman for showcasing gay and trans characters across his many works because, as he said, he has gay and trans friends that he wasn't seeing represented in media of the time.

Honestly one of the things I like about Edwin’s character development and accepting he likes guys is that everyone else is so normal about it. He’s the only one going But. That’s Not Allowed? And Niko the others are like sure it is! They take Monty liking him as something normal and obvious. Being surrounded by people who take that kind of thing as a given is such a nice (and bizarre) feeling when you’re not used to it

And of course when he tells Charles and there’s no recoil no betrayal just “ok I can’t say I feel the same way but you ARE my best friend and I’m not going anywhere.” The confession didn’t make anything weird. They have as much time as they want to figure this out. I love them so much
