The King's Men - Chapter Seventeen (19)

Day: Friday, April 26th / 27th* Time: 6:48 PM EST

Four security guards escort the Foxes from the bus to the stadium while another six stand guard along the short route. It is a little excessive, perhaps, but Edgar Allan's board isn't taking any chances. Cameras flash as the Foxes go by, and it is only a matter of time before someone realizes Kevin's ink has changed. An incredulous shout gets all attention on Kevin's face, and suddenly ten guards seem entirely insufficient. There is a chorus of boos on all sides as the news sweeps through the crowd, but breaking through that vicious disapproval are a few scattered shouts of "Queen!" Kevin endures all of it with a haughty expression locked in place.

Review: So many similarities to The Hunger Games and Red Queen. [Note: reading Red Queen next month and that review will include a list]. The story was very much a "Hurry up and wait" for me. The exciting parts were thrilling and the rest was filler. Some parts felt like they could have [should have] been more relevant and described.

Examples: Kitt going to Loot. The whole Adena scene in the end. Callous as it is, it happened so fast, I didn't really care. Really any part with Kai and his father could have been given more depth.

But instead of diving more into those, we got more and more flirting filler. And did Kitt not notice or not care about the tension between Kai and Paedyn? Did I misread his feelings because it seemed like he was into her as well? The trials themselves were pretty original butni do wish they had been more of the story instead of being maybe one chapter each. Same with the rebellion. We know it's happening, obviously, but the meetings were super short and there weren't many at all. Paedyn trusted these people so quickly because what? They knew her father? Even after she learns Callum can read minds? She was so smart about everything else. But the one time she needs to think about the fact that she is betraying not just her future king, but also her friend, who genuinely seems to care about her opinions and can create change, she jumps head first.

But her command has brough with it very real concerns, as well- the Wardstones lay shattered in Kenabres, the source of Lilith’s massive power remains mysterious, and devils lounge boldly in the Commander’s council chamber.

The risk had seemed worthwhile, once, but now? Now Galfrey has received word that her soldiers, once proud Crusaders, are lining up to sell their souls to Hell at Lilith’s encouragement. Now Lilith has placed herself in a seat of power where she can harvest the loyalty- or at least the fear- of Galfrey’s own citizens.

But it is Galfrey who is Queen. And she will not allow this to go on a moment longer.

Lilith does not attack, in the end. She does manage to retain her title; given her success as a leader and her apparent cooperation, Galfrey has no reason to refuse her that. It will hardly matter, anyway, not when she is a plane away.

But before Lilith departs to the Abyss, she turns back to meet Galfrey’s eyes.

“You’ve made a mistake today, my Queen.”

She disappears through the portal without another word, but the chill in Galfrey’s bones lingers long after she has gone.

i don't want to give it away bc my favorite scene is THE pivotal scene of the fic 🤭 but i shall just say that i love DRAMA and i love being EVIL. so. 😈 stay tuned!!

i am now realizing that i have not like. stated anywhere what my actual au for this fic is 😭 but i'm just about to write a scene where will goes to war and i am sooo excited for all the s1/canon callbacks i'm about to write 👀
