Also to add to the video game section of this post, I'm not the best gamer, not by a long shot. I'm like...noob level on everything. So I watch my lovely wife, Aya, play a lot of different games and she'll get me into them. Even if I don't play them myself.

On a side note, music is a large part of my mental health regimen. If I'm overstimulated, the ear buds are popped in and I'm lost to a playlist for a while. just finished reading another bkdk masterpiece so i wanted to compile a list of my favourite bkdk fics! all of these authors are incredible!!

a promise (2k words) - katsuki and izuku get a chance to talk before the final war. every time i read this and see that it has hardly any hits or kudos i get offended because this is one of the most beautiful representations of katsuki and izuku’s characters. i love this, so much. it could be drawn out and considered canon and i wouldn’t be able to tell that horikoshi didn’t write it.

i’ve found hope in a heart attack (92k words) katsuki has a cancerous brain tumor and deals with it in the most katsuki way possible. THIS ONE HURTS, FOLKS. but man it’s just. it feels canon to me like this just feels like a “katsuki gets cancer arc” of mha. it’s written so beautifully and man. it hurts. a lot.

and now a section dedicated to my favourite author sapphicpandabear who writes pure amazingness every time even though they’re constantly writing. i admire them so much!!

So. I just listened to MAG 200, finally finishing the fever dream that is The Magnus Archives, and all I have to say is: Holy shit. Just. Good lord.

Look, I knew it was going to be sad. I've been on Pinterest. But Jesus. I was not prepared. Now I'm shaking and will certainly be curling in the fetal position later, sobbing and screaming into the void. I mean, I'm happy for Basira, Melanie & Georgie of course, as well as our beloved Admiral, but God. Jon and Martin, I love you, you deserved so much better, I see why all your fanfics are fix it. But even just thinking about everyone we have lost, all the characters I got emotionally attached to. Sasha. Tim. Daisy. Michael Shelley. Even thinking about all the avatars (I'm a sucker for a villian, what can I say?) makes my lungs spasm with love and want. I shall miss them all for eternity.

And so ends possibly the greatest experience I've ever had with a fandom, at least until I recover enough to start tmagp. Everything about tma is just pure amazingness. Everything. It's funny how much you can grow to love random people just by hearing them voice act a character and laugh in bloopers. I love them so much, the whole cast. The two blooper episodes brought me more joy than I think I have ever experienced with a piece of media, trumping even the mighty Good Omens, which is saying something (To be fair though, Not with that thong on! and Oh god, I'm knackered, I've been doing all this labelling! would make anyone crack up, although perhaps not continue hysterically giggling for over fifty minutes... They still pop into my head sometimes and I'll just randomly snort in really inappropriate situations because I'm gonna buy some 'ead and shoulders, 'cause I found one on the road this mornin'! and Gertrude's been on the sauce, need I say more? The way that Scott, no matter how much he likes Kira, and no matter how engrossed and distracted he is by the bardo research, drops everything the second he realizes that Stiles is in distress.

The way he immediately gets up and runs to him with all of the urgency in the world, ready to catch him if he falls, and determined to get him out of there as quickly as he can.

The way he is so clearly worried and almost near panic himself because his best friend is struggling and he doesn't know how to fix it...until he does.

The way he schools his own emotions, collects himself, and keeps his voice so calm and so steady and forces Stiles to look at him and focus on him and COUNT WITH HIM.

The way Stiles turns to look at Scott, pure panic and pure fear and so out of focus and lost, but forces himself to do what Scott's asking, because it's SCOTT.

The way Scott says "five" with that little smile when he realizes it's working and Stiles is listening and he's gonna be able to get him through this and out of it.

The way Stiles' breaths keep hitching because he's so scared they'll get to ten and there will be one more, but he keeps going because Scott is asking him to and Scott is staying calm and Scott doesn't seem the least bit concerned.

The way Scott says "ten" so softly, yet so forcefully, repeating it so that Stiles can finally establish that there are ONLY TEN, and that he's OKAY, and that this ISN'T A DREAM, and that Scott is RIGHT THERE, in the flesh, HAVING HIS BACK.

The way Stiles just freezes, and his breathing evens out, and he finally looks, REALLY LOOKS, at Scott and processes that he's okay.

The way he collapses, so tired, and still so worried, but breathing and alive and HERE.

The way that Scott stares at him in concerned relief, knowing that they've gotten through the worst of it, but that Stiles is clearly still upset.

The way Scott crouches down next to him, but gives him his space, and stays calm and collected and confident and determined, no matter how worried he still is.

The way Stiles, even out of the panic attack, feels like it's all over, and feels like they'll never be able to help anyone or fix anything.

The way Scott, in not so many words, tells him that they'll figure it out, because they have each other, and that's all that matters.

IT'S SO FREAKING PERFECT!!!

You know, that near-suicide scene...

It's amazing, and it's beautiful, and it's so well done, and so well acted, and so emotional and heartfelt, and it's one of the best scenes in the whole show.

But I'm gonna be honest. I don't know if ANYTHING can beat this panic attack scene for me.

Because it's just SO PERFECT.

The acting is AMAZING. The way Dylan acts out the panic attack, the way Tyler acts out the inevitable worry that comes with being the helper in that situation, but also the love and kindness that can make or break that situation.

The realism is so on point. As much as I love the Stydia panic attack scene, in most real-life panic attacks, kissing the person probably would just make it worse, not better. But THIS situation...this is EXACTLY how a real-life panic attack would go down, and exactly how a loved one could help bring you out of it.

More than anything, it's a BEAUTIFUL, yet slightly more subtle, representation of Scott and Stiles' friendship and just how much they mean to each other.

AND I LOVE IT SO FREAKING MUCH!!!

I have class in 45 minutes, which means there's no way I make it through this episode right now, because you KNOW I'm about to keep going back and re-watching that scene over and over again, but it's just SO PERFECT!!!

I LOVE SCOTT AND STILES SO MUCH I SWEAR TO GOD!!!!

For the eighth time since Lance has started the movie, Keith makes him pause it to ask dumb questions.

"Ugh, Keith, stop questioning it, it's Disney logic! There are no rules."

Keith raises a brow but quiets down.

When Lance had found out that Pidge has multiple movies downloaded onto the laptop she somehow managed to bring into space, he immediately scoured it for any animated movies.

As Keith's boyfriend, (he can't help but shimmy with joy whenever he realizes that) it's Lance's duty to educate him on the amazingness of DreamWorks, Pixar, Disney, and whatever other studios there are out there.

Lance totally catches Keith eying Flynn Rider when they watch Tangled.

For some reason, Keith easily accepts the idea of magic hair and whatnot, but he can't seem to grasp the idea of talking animals.

The look of scandalized befuddlement (love that word) that crosses the red paladin's face whenever any animal utters so much of a word sends Lance into hysterics.

And when they start singing, he literally lunges over to hide behind Lance with a look of pure terror on his face. Lance can't help but sing along and Keith gaze switches back and forth from him to the computer.

"Aw come on, I thought you would love this! Look, there's snails!"

Keith doesn't even notice Lance patronizing him as his whispers out in a hollow voice, "I ate snails when I was younger. I think they're gonna murder me for my sins against snailkind. They're freaky! They're not bugs, but they're not anything else either."

Keith is staring up at Lance with wide eyes, still cowering against the back of the couch and using Lance as a barrier between himself and the computer.

"You can watch horror, but you're terrified of a show made for children?"

They end up watching Tangled for the 27th time instead and bundle up in a huge fluffy blanket. Keith stays close to Lance's side as if he's scared that killer snails will start sliming out of the vents. When Lance says that out loud, Keith clings impossibly closer and watches the walls around them warily.

Now whenever Lance is absolutely determined to win an argument, he start singing Under the Sea at the top of his lungs.

Leo is an eccentric Captain that seems to love nothing more than himself. His quick thinking and elaborate strategies make him fearsome as nobody can predict his movements or plans. His cursed weapon is able to teleport his own ship anywhere. As well as open portals to transport others out of his way. His constant gloating and inflated ego are usually his downfall. Leo often gets many who meet him to either fall for him or want to kill him with no in between. His love of treasure and trinkets is purely for flaunting his own amazingness, and to woo men and women alike. He wants to gain more territory of the sea, notably his twins territory just to spite him. Though Leo seems to hide something thats precious to him on his ship, far out of his brothers sight. There may be more to this ego driven Captain than what you see at a first glance.

Leo like his brothers has been cursed into a turtle form after taking weapons from the tomb of long dead famous Pirate Draxum the Deadly. Leo likes his new look but misses his hair sometimes.

Forgive me for hijacking my JF fanblog for this, an overly long rapture about Dorothy L Sayers's fabulous Gaudy Night

Or don't, I don't care. But either way, I'll be back to the regularly scheduled programming eventually, not that it was ever very regularly scheduled.

Anyhow-

I love Gaudy Night. One of my favorite books. It's not perfect, but it's brilliant, and that's better. Brilliance is rarely perfect because it requires creativity and an element of risk. Gaudy Night takes risks that don't all work, but when they do they are sublime.

I think the book is purposely messy and layered in ways where you can assume you know what Sayers was trying to say but can also get totally different things out of it. Purposeful in a choose-your-own-adventure way. You can read it as being purely feminist and ignoring class, or you can read it as being about women who are purely feminist and ignore class (to their detriment and ultimately peril). You can read it as Harriet falling in love with Peter or you can read it as Harriet discovering she was always a little bit in love with him. You can read it as being about women who prioritize integrity or you can read it as being about women who have grown comfortable and cloistered from real world responsibilities. And, of course, you can read it as women being cloistered from real life responsibilities or you can read it as female academics being held to a standard of responsibility that would never be expected of male ones. So many things to explore!

Also, it happens to speak to a lot of things I'm going through right now, though more in specific motifs than in the central conflict per se. (In my case, without being too personal, it's mostly the theme of ruminating endlessly over a choice that, once I've decided, will have felt inevitable.) So that kind of feeling of sitting in Harriet's headspace- and what a clearly defined headspace it is!- is pretty wonderful if jarring.

And so much amazingness- the punt? The chessmen?! Placetne domina?!? Yes, even the dog collar, because the way it's used is just kind of perfect. (And my mandatoryish JF reference here- as in my previous (re)blog, I really wonder if the idea for the dog collar in Here's What We Do came from this book. The conceptual resemblance is pretty uncanny.)

And human feelings!! Like, I came away from this book being genuinely unsure if I'd like either Harriet or Peter if I knew them in real life. Harriet is really judgmental in a way that I've never particularly liked in people, and Peter is smug in a way that would get my goat pretty quickly. But they're messy and in this book Harriet in particular feels real (and Peter feels real through her eyes) and messy real people are the most fun to read about. And "intellectual" romances are the best because the people in them think so much and get so mushy. They're really a perfect pair for this sort of thing and are loveable and compelling on their own terms.

(I also think, incidentally, that Busman's Honeymoon is a wonderful book, if somewhat ridiculous in the mystery and village-folk bits, and really underrated as an exploration of the challenge that Miss De Vine gives Harriet as to what happens when two intellects, and independent forces, marry. Where does one give way, and where does one stand firm? And what does it mean once someone has made a decision and feels at peace with it, and once someone has been pursuing something for so long and finally has it? How do they rebalance the relationship now that it is Harriet who, in many ways, has the emotional upper hand? And the ending is a LOT in a really great way.)

Though... I'll take a sec to rant about the miniseries version of Gaudy Night, with the full acknowledgement that I'm far from the first to do so. No chessmen? No dog collar? No Reggie Pomfret? No proposal letter? No St George? The creator sitting down and apparently saying "hmmm, people are OBVIOUSLY fans of Gaudy Night because of the intricate mechanisms of the poison pen mystery"? The way in which Peter is so pushy and off-putting at the beginning, and is the one who brings up the idea of academic women being repressed? The gratuitously edited dialogue? The way that the proposal at the end is portrayed as inevitable rather than the leap of faith that Peter helps Harriet to make? The fact that Peter NEVER APOLOGIZES?! Not even Harriet Walter and Edward Petherbridge save it, and that says a lot, because they're really good in it, even if I always thought that Petherbridge was just SLIGHTLY off as Wimsey (over-mannered and not particularly dynamic, though with great subtle physical comedy)- but Harriet Walter was always spot on and I'm kind of in love with her in this role, or possibly want to be her, I'm never sure (though I'd never pull off the hairstyle).

Though I will say, re the Peter never apologizing bit: the other two miniseries ARE genuinely good, I think- Strong Poison diverges from the book but in interesting ways except for the ending, which I'll get to in a minute, and Have His Carcase is basically as good an adaptation as anyone could have expected and the pacing edits generally work- but I think the whole miniseries run has one uniting flaw, which is that rather than follow Sayers's lead and have the trilogy deconstruct the idea that Peter is trying to wear Harriet down into proposing, the show seems to almost purposely perpetuate it. It's by far the most explicit in the Gaudy Night adaptation, but in Strong Poison, the awful flip of the ending in which it's Peter running after Harriet sets this up as the guy chasing the girl, and the very over the top attempts at compliments and physical affection in Have His Carcase are very irritating, even as the show does a phenomenal job with the argument scene. Gaudy Night only makes it worse, of course, with that cringeworthy scene at the dance and the complete lack of any depth to their relationship beyond what seems like perpetual nudging on his part, culminating in a basically sterile proposal scene that really does feel like he finally managed to wear her down. (I did read that Petherbridge and Walter rewrote it to be better, and I don't doubt that it was much worse originally, but it still is not great.)

Finally, a few random fancasting notes:

I've never really thought overmuch about modern day fancasting, but I feel like Tom Goodman-Hill would be very good as Wimsey. No opinion on who'd play Harriet.

I've also had this feeling that I'd have LOVED to see a British-accented David Hyde Pierce in the role of Wimsey back in the day (of course he's too old now). Would he be pretty similar to Petherbridge? Maybe. But I think that he'd bring something really interesting to the part that I'd have loved to see. Or maybe I just unreasonably love Niles Crane, also a possibility.

I think that if any new version of the LPW books comes out, Harriet Walter should play the Dowager Duchess. She would be absolutely wonderful.

Hi there, hello. I just wanna do a giant music ramble, cos I haven’t done that yet and I have absolutely no idea how. Music is my life, my entire goddamn life. Here are my top ten bands/artists

these artists (and many more) got me through the toughest times in my life. A lot of people say this and they express being understood, and I felt that to some degree. I was sad, autistic, and lonely and it was bad through my early teenage years. But there was something else about music, aside from relatability that really struck me. And that was the pure beauty of all music. Every single piece of music from Beethoven to the beastie boys is so stunning and not enough people talk about it. I became a hopeless slave to my love of music, I was infatuated with music theory, with learning every instrument I could get my shaky hands on.

this is all thanks to an alt-rock Australian band from the 90’s named Silverchair. If you’re a middle aged dad from NSW, you know them. If you’re literally anyone else, you probably don’t. But I fell deeply in love with their music. I’ve never felt love as strongly for a single person as I have for silverchair’s music. In fact, I don’t even know if any of the love I’ve ever felt even counts in comparison. Let me rant about them for a paragraph

silverchair was formed in Newcastle NSW in 1994 by a group of literal goddamn 14 year olds. They won a competition with the radio station Triple J and as a reward got to record an EP titled Tomorrow. Instant success. The following year, the band at age 15, released their debut album frogstomp. The album is quite grungey, though bares minimal resemblance to Nirvana (who they were constantly compared to) instead their influences lied in 70’s punk. The album contains heavy drop d guitar riffs, impressive vocals and all round amazingness from a bunch of teens. They brought out four more albums. Freak Show, an album released in 1997 with lyrics surrounding the idea of being a ‘freak’ which is how the band felt after being cast away on tour. 1999s Neon Ballroom, a heartbreaking album written in the lead singer/guitarists bedroom, in complete isolation after having a mental health breakdown. Diorama, 2002, my personal favourite, featuring epic orchestral pieces, vivid lyrics and vocals so beautiful they sweep one off their feet. And lastly 2007s Young Modern, a turn into pop rock while retaining the orchestral properties of their previous album. Silverchair do not have a bad song. They are all beautiful.

all this to say, I will be doing an in depth analysis on my interpretation of every song by every band in that top ten list, starting with silverchair. I would love to maybe introduce some people to some genuinely great bands in the process, so if you’ve read this far, pans you don’t mind, give this post a reblog to share the passion with other music lovers.
