SLAP A HAM RECORDS INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS DODGE MAY 1997
Slap a Ham Records was an independent label from San Francisco owned and operated by Chris Dodge, bassist of the band Spazz as well as others.[1] The label is generally seen as a highly influential entity within the hardcore punk scene in California during the 1980s and 1990s, for the label issued releases by groups such as Crossed Out, Man Is the Bastard, Capitalist Casualties, among others.[2] It is also considered to have played an important role in the development of powerviolence, a dissonant style of hardcore that is similar to grindcore and thrashcore.[3] The label also issued early releases by well-known groups such as the Melvins and Eyehategod. The label lasted for about 13 years, officially shutting down in 2002. According to Dodge, this was due because of the September 11 attacks; "After the attacks, everyone stopped spending money" and as a result, Slap a Ham faced stagnate commerce, causing Dodge to go into debt.[2]

Isn't it funny how the whole concept of the punk rock movement was to escape stereotypes and labels and to promote the inclusivity of all people and the lovely things that make them different?
Yet, in the process... they labeled themselves, afflicted themselves with one of the most crippling stereotypes and became one of the most non inclusive and gatekeeping groups of all time. Most punk rockers spend more time debating what the definition of "punk" is, and kicking those out of the scene who don't fit their own personal definition, than they do actually chasing their own ideals.
And it's sad. I love the punk rock movement in concept... but the reality is very different.
In my studies and observations, I feel that punk was never about fighting for one specific thing. Punk was about radical individuality and accepting yourself the way you are. It was about fighting the system. It was about bonding together over music and fashion and culture so tightly that they could never break us apart. Yes, punk is a political movement, but it's not just about ONE political belief. It wasn't about what you believed but rather HOW you believed it.
The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were both right wing bands. The Clash was left wing. There's videos of punks from the eighties, the OGs, talking about being conservative and fighting for right wing politics. And in actuality, the whole idea was built on Anarchy anyway, not this dividing, ostracizing, black and white mindset that modern day American politics uses to turn us against each other and make us weak.
Are you fighting for what you believe in? Are you out there being bold and raising hell and never compromising or selling out? Fighting for the greater good of humanity, whatever that is to you? That's punk rock to me. Unfortunately, the new generation of punk rockers doesn't see things that way. Which is alright with me, I suppose. The title isn't worth enough to me to argue with my brothers and sisters over it. I'm just here to rock out and throw up the finger at the Man.
I never wanted the labels anyway.
In summary, punk's not dead. Just confused.

Some of yall are stretching punk to places it never said it was. It isn't a ideology or a lifestyle or a attitude. "Punk ideology" is just anarchism. You don't need a red Mohawk and boots to do diy shit or hate tradition and power. Punk didn't rise from there bed one day a out of no we're to say "... no gods... no masters, hey that would make for a great ideology" it is something that punks just adhere too, if even. Plane and simple (and from some one who loves Punk)
Punk is just a visual, fashion, and music aesthetic
That's it. That's all punk is. You can be a anarchist with out having to force the symbol "punk" on to all your stuff.
Also the music comes first so no wearing a vest with a mcr patch isn't punk agin *fashion AND music no or*

one thing about alt stuff is that the barrier to entry to being "goth" is truely so fucking low and yet people constantly limbo under the bar instead of stepping over it and wonder why they get called posers. like we're not asking you to move mountains here we're just asking you to find even one band under the umbrella that you like and to engage with the community a little bit. The fashion has truely so much overlap between goth punk and emo so very few people will care which one you call yourself based on your look and you just have to find a band you like. Dashboard Confessional screams a bit too much for your taste and Dead Kennedys is too loud? Guess what you're in luck the goths listen to something a little softer and weirder they call it dark wave or ethereal wave depending on the phases of the moon. Try out Clan of Xymox or Switchblade Symphony. Like truly the alt music scene is so fucking diverse there's gotta be something in here that you like. If not and you truly are a pop girlie then don't call yourself punk it's very easy.

blue twenty-six: Constantina
Gentle, warm improvised post-rock from Brazil.
During a phase when Blue Tapes was releasing a lot of really cool music from bands - think Poland's abstract post-punkers Trupa Trupa, Shane Parish's Library of Babel, or the minimalist prog crunch of Quasiviri - Constantina were a particular highlight.
Recommended for fans of Tortoise, Salvatore and that sacred interplay you only get from a perfectly psychically aligned rock group swinging and surging as one.
Bands! They're great. Stay tuned as we have more band-music coming soon!
In the meantime, why not grab a copy of blue twenty-six? Unusually for this BT era, we still have physical copies of this left . Buy it, it's flipping great.
Take me to Bandcamp
